Ricky Gervais Golden Globes.jpg

I can't wait to watch Ricky Gervais host the upcoming Golden Globes. As if his singing, dancing, and self-deprecating humor weren't reasons enough to adore him, add the following from his list "25 Things You Don't Know About Me" from this week's Us Magazine:

  1. I am a keen campaigner for animal rights through PETA.
  2. I want all bullfighters to be gored to death.

The comic really holds nothing back. No doubt Sunday night's show will be full of surprises. Will you be watching?

Matadors are sadistic, murderous predators !

Agreed with Ricky on his 6 and 7!

What is brave about finishing off a half dead bull anyway?? Matadors are vain egotistical cowards!

Posted by: Julia | January 16, 2010 04:48 AM

As if there wasn't already enough to love about my favourite comedian. He's an animal rights activist too. Ricky is the best!

Posted by: Gen | January 16, 2010 06:46 AM

Ricky, you are the best. We love you for this.

Posted by: Pia | January 16, 2010 10:38 AM

I hope his comment about matadors being gored to death was meant as a case of British humor. No one in their right mind should EVER wish for the death of someone, even if they disagree with their views.

Posted by: Jade | January 16, 2010 12:15 PM

Ricky you're a shining example to all. Bless you!

Good for Ricky! It's great to see some celebrities using their fame for good!

I share your wish for bullfighters, Ricky!

Posted by: george | January 16, 2010 07:18 PM

BRAVO Ricky! I couldn't have said it better!

Posted by: susan | January 16, 2010 08:01 PM

This is a problem that animal rights groups often have. Once you denigrate human life, it's harder to get people to listen to pleas for animals. If you think you have the moral right to wish for the death of a human based on them doing something you don't like, people will be less likely to believe you are on the moral high road. You just sound violent and full of hate, which is at odds with turning around to speak of compassion.

Posted by: Abby | January 16, 2010 09:32 PM

Didn't like him, now I love him!!

Posted by: Asia | January 16, 2010 09:43 PM

Love Ricky in the UK version of The Office. I always root for the bulls too!

Posted by: Brandon | January 16, 2010 09:53 PM

Awesome!

The people who are so concerned about matadors must not have clue about what matadors actually do.

Either that or they could care less about the torture they inflict.

Posted by: Brad | January 17, 2010 02:39 PM

I also hope that bull fighters get gored by the bulls it would give them a taste of their own medicine. What's wrong with that?

Posted by: Maureen | January 17, 2010 06:45 PM

Abby you are obviously not an animal lover so why don't you go to another site.Human beings think that they are superior to animals and I for one am sick of it! Is it morally right to inflict such pain and torment on a bull by a so called human being? For the love of "sport"? I think not and I rest my case!

Posted by: susan | January 17, 2010 06:59 PM

Comedian George Carlin came up with this profound statement on the Running of the Bulls:

"I cheer when a bull at Pamplona sinks one of his horns deep into the lower intestines of some drunken European macho swine. And my cheers grow louder when a victim is a young American macho-jock tourist asshole. Especially if the bull is able to swing that second horn around and catch the guy right in the nuts."

Posted by: Mike Quinoa | January 17, 2010 11:46 PM

He was great on the Golden Globes last night. But, what was with Mickey Rourke and his crocodile/alligator lapel?? Did anyone notice that too? I hope it was "faux". He loves animals so much, I would think he would know better and be aware of the cruelty in that industry.

Posted by: Mona | January 18, 2010 12:11 PM

Susan, I never said anything about humans being superior or animals not mattering. What I said was that people are less likely to listen to pleas on behalf of animals when those pleas come from someone who has also said that humans they don't like should be killed. I don't like a lot of people and disagree with what they do, but that doesn't mean I wish their deaths, which means that when I talk about having compassion, I'm not being hypocritical.

You want to protect bulls from harm by wishing for the deaths of the matadors...but how is that different from pro-life advocates wanting to protect unborn babies by killing abortion providers? You don't win the argument in favor of one type of compassion by showing a gleeful lack of compassion in another direction. Rest that case.

Even more reasons to Love Ricky!! We wish you even more success Ricky!!

Posted by: Robert Scott | January 18, 2010 01:21 PM

dear sirs, yes I fully agree that the matadors are terrible people. I feel very very very upset when I see those bulls being teribly tortured before they are killed. how would the matadors feel like that, being tortured before they are killed. something MUST be done, ifonly I had the means to stop it I certainly would try my level best. what can be done to stop this brutal killing. something has to be done, will this go on forever so many animals are mistreated abused, killed for pleasure and money, why as human beings do we let this happen. please tell me what you think with kindregards best wishes Jennifer Barnes

Posted by: jennifer | January 18, 2010 01:59 PM

dear sir, I agree with all comments bullfighting is brutal and it must hopefully be stopped soon. the matadors are wicked to kill such a lovely animal and before that they torture them, how would they like it. any suggestions of how we can stop this. thanks I hope it canbe stopped in future. thanks

Posted by: Jennifer | January 18, 2010 02:03 PM

I always root for the bull to gore the matador. Any time I see a human messing with/tormenting any animal I root for the animal. Thank god that snake finally got rid of that stupid Crocodile Hunter from down under. Humans need to leave animals alone and get what they deserve if they get killed or maimed because they won't leave animals alone as they should. Power to all animals! Ever heard of Karma?!?!? The Karma Police are always observing, and will be there, even in the end, to judge your animal abuse. Love your comedy and reality Ricky!

Posted by: Christine | January 18, 2010 02:05 PM

"Thank god that snake finally got rid of that stupid Crocodile Hunter from down under."
It was a stingray.

"Humans need to leave animals alone and get what they deserve if they get killed or maimed because they won't leave animals alone as they should."
Killer bees will empty the whole hive if someone so much as gets near their hive. You think that humans who get stung to death by the things "deserve it"?

Posted by: MH | January 18, 2010 04:25 PM

MH, don't go near the hive. I for one would love to get stung to death so I can get the F*** off this horrid planet of greed and animal torture. I'm stick of it. Sorry I didn't research the stingray over the snake. Animals rule, people suck! Have a great day!

Posted by: Christine | January 18, 2010 05:51 PM

So, if I don't wish for a manador to injured by a bull, that means I don't care about animals? I absolutely hate bull fighting, but I would never wish for someone to be maimed.

Posted by: Katey | January 18, 2010 06:13 PM

"What is brave about finishing off a half dead bull anyway?? Matadors are vain egotistical cowards!"

Totally agree!

Posted by: Carressa | January 18, 2010 06:18 PM

Abby, can you read? Where did I mention that you said that man was superior? I was stating MY belief. And if I wanted to discuss pro life I would find a website about that issue. Go preach somewhere else.

Posted by: susan | January 18, 2010 08:44 PM

Unfortunatly it is very difficult to end this king of behaviour if not impossible.
My country, Portugal, just like Spain has the traditions of Matadores and traditions are very hard to erradicate for they are deep-seated in our latin culture

Matadors are just as bad as women who wear fur or hunters w/out Ba.....ls. They are all the same to me.

Posted by: carla | January 20, 2010 02:35 PM

Part of me feels that anyone who tortures and kills an animal deserves the same thing to happen to them and yet, what I long for more than more violence and bloodshed is for people to simply USE their minds and brains and step into the light. For someone to try and defend bull-fighting, cock-fighting, horse-tripping, etc., etc. on the grounds that it is part of a culture, just leaves me very empty inside.

The main mission of human beings on this planet should be to evolve as a species and learn to live peacefully and prosperously with everyone and all living beings.

How long will it take for that to happen? Is the human species doomed? I truly feel we are--we don't want to be all that we can be. We like wallowing around in the neanderthal muck and mire. We really don't like to stretch, grow, and evolve. We like being slumdog scumbags. We do!

Posted by: Susan T | January 20, 2010 07:16 PM

Susan T,
I think you are selling human kind a bit short, don't you think?
In 1903 the Wright brothers made the first powered flight. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet.
40 years later we have jet powered planes capable of flying over 500mph and hundreds of miles.
Less than thirty years later we put men on the moon.
In 1903 we flew 120 feet, in 1969 three men travel 239,000 miles to the moon and then came back safely.
Now we have our sights set on Mars and we are probably going back to the moon within the next 10 years.
I would say we are a bit past the neanderthal muck and mire. Wouldn't you?

Posted by: Kurt K | January 21, 2010 10:23 AM

Kurt,
While you are staring up into the sky, the Great Humanisation of Earth continues. Twenty football pitch sized chunks of rainforest disappear each minute; with mass extinction and global pollution accelerating all the time. Humanity is like some vile cancerous disease, strangling the planet, wiping out or enslaving every other species, blinded by a souless pursuit of monetary wealth, and insatiable conceit for its own brilliance. No, I take no pride in calling myself a human.

Posted by: Paul S | February 8, 2010 12:31 PM

It has been the premise that if tourists didn't support this barbaric show it would die a natural death. Ensure anyone who goes to Spain for a holiday is aware of the cruelty involved. Not just the bulls the horses wear long curtains to hide their wounds and have their voice boxes removed so their screams cannot be heard. One of the disgraces of the western world should be ended.

Posted by: poppy | February 8, 2010 01:02 PM

Fortunately Ricky and Joaquin Phoenix are compassionate about animals being mistreated how wonderful they make time for this in their busy lives, unlike many selfish stars,I too wish all matadors to be gored to death for the disgusting cruelty to already injured bulls.

Posted by: norma oswalt | February 8, 2010 03:17 PM

The point is this - HUMANS can fend & talk for themselves but animals can't & are sometimes defenseless as to what happens to them so animal lovers & defenders have to be their voice.

Posted by: June | February 8, 2010 03:29 PM

Yes Ricky gervais was being a bit flip and humorous in wishing people dead, but he, like others, me included, who care about animals being tortured and killed, do often feel that people who are killed whilst hunting or tormenting animals brought it on themselves and getting back what they give out.
Behind is comment is the real and serious concern about the utmost cruelty the bulls in the ring, along with other spanish traditions inflicted on them, suffer. How Spain being in europe and an eec member get away with it is beyond me. Although many countries, the uk included, do hunt and harm animals, much illegally, the brutality of the legal organised tradion sport pleasure in spain would be intollerable in the uk and other european countries.
l now read they also kill thousands of greyhounds cruelly each season end when their hare coursing is over, also legal l guess.
Spains cruelty is more akin to legal cruelty in asia china particularly where human and animal rights are attrocious. l hope all decent spanish people will oppose actively, and people who care will think of going somewhere else for their hols, and let the spanish tourist board no why.
After all that, well done Ricky Gervais, love ya.

Well done for speaking out against animal cruelty Ricky! You certainly get my vote.

Posted by: Wallaby | February 9, 2010 09:32 AM

Thank you Ricky for supporting PETA and for speaking out alongside other celebrities. I love your honesty and bravery, and I hope that your high profile support is taken seriously by the world's policy-makers. It warms my heart a little in this killing pool of sadness but I am ashamed to be a member of the human race as "we" are surely killing Mother Earth one animal at a time, including ourselves!

Posted by: Marie Gilman | February 9, 2010 10:13 AM

Paul S,
Its too bad that you have such little faith in mankind.

Posted by: Kurt K | February 9, 2010 12:39 PM

Brilliant - just what I've always though. Good for you Ricky.

Posted by: Carole Robins | February 9, 2010 04:51 PM

I am a Mexican, and although bullfighting is certainly hideous and a matter of shame for us Latinos, I also think that people who have a heart for animals should not let themselves be driven by hatred. Despite the fact that the vast majority of Mexicans (and Spaniards for that matter)rejects bullfighting, there is little one can do about it at the moment, since bullfighting is endorsed and actively supported by powerful Mexican TV networks and, of course, the Catholic Church, always taking sides against enlightment. Even President Calderón and the former dean of Mexico's largest public university (a Neanderthal called J.R. de la Fuente) regularly attend bullfights and consider bullfighting to be not only a sport but 'culture' and even art, too!! Moreover, Mexico City's bullring, the world's largest, is about the be declared (by the Mex. Congress) a national historical monument... Can you believe it?? And as matadors are concerned, I agree that they should be seen as embodying what is worst in humankind: cruelty, stupidity, arrogance. ¡Vivan los toros! ¡Muera la tauromaquia!

Posted by: Diego de la Barquera | February 10, 2010 06:45 AM

Good for Ricky, he certainly does speak up for the animals, however, it's just a pity he's still not gone vegetarian (better still) vegan, yet. Come on Ricky!!

Posted by: Mandi | February 12, 2010 12:06 PM

to Jade jan 16th Matadors are hardly human ,they are sick cowards, do you really know what happens to the bull and how much he suffers at the hands of these so called "humans" as you put it.live by the sword, die by the sword.

Posted by: D | February 27, 2010 08:39 AM

Well said Ricky.
Anyone who wants to hurt any animal is sick.
To Lyn on he 9th Feb - hare coursing is illegal here in the UK.
