Oh, Pie! Canada's Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Gets Creamed

Gail Shea, Canada's minister of fisheries and oceans, was greeted with a face full of pie as she arrived at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters today. It seems that one activist had had enough of Ms. Shea's yammering in support of the seal slaughter and decided to fill the minister's pie hole with something a tad more palatable.
Since her election to the House of Commons in 2008, Ms. Shea's name has been synonymous with support for the seal slaughter. After the European Union made the humane decision to ban the sale of seal products, she responded by supporting the absurd proposal that the Canadian Olympic team wear seal skins as part of their official uniforms, saying, "I think it would be a good statement for the Canadian sealing industry and Canada's support of it."
The thing is, no matter how adamantly Shea claims that "[t]he Canadian seal hunt is guided by rigorous animal welfare principles," the majority of Canadians don't buy it—and they don't support the bashing in of baby seals' skulls.
So come on, Gail, wipe that soy whipped cream from your face and show the world that you're actually willing to taste listen to what your fellow citizens are dishing out saying.

Ha-Ha way to go PETA! This has truly made my day....to be honest i think she was well back at the end of the line when they were handing out good looks - she's horrific looking and looks like a man!

She deserved a pie to the face!
Any kind of "hunt" cannot be humane.
Posted by: Aneliese | January 25, 2010 01:06 PM
The woman is vile, she is ignorant & a murderer. Shes lucky it was only a pie.
Posted by: Autumn | January 25, 2010 01:13 PM
HAHA. Like I always say:
Everybody gets his or her just deserts ;-D. It is only a pity that I wasn't able to be there to laugh at her or to throw some pies, too. :-)
Posted by: Alisha | January 25, 2010 01:22 PM
Awesome video!!! Im glad she got a pie in her face! Heartless B1tch!
Posted by: Tiffany | January 25, 2010 01:36 PM
I am a Canadian who wants the seal hunt to STOP but i'm not sure stunts like this will help our cause.
Posted by: NT | January 25, 2010 01:46 PM
seriously, whats the recipe for your pie?
Posted by: Andrew | January 25, 2010 01:52 PM
best video ever.
Posted by: Amber | January 25, 2010 01:52 PM
She's lucky it was just a pie and not a club. What a sad, pathetic, ignorant woman.
Posted by: Katie | January 25, 2010 02:12 PM
I like this. Shame on this Minister. She should know better in her authoritative position.
Posted by: E | January 25, 2010 02:25 PM
Bravo to the brave and compassionate pie thrower!
Gail Shea, like a lot of pandering Canadian politicians lately, needs something to stifle the inanities spewing from her mouth.
Before the EU banned seal products an Environics poll found that 75% of Canadians were opposed to the federal government’s use of tax dollars to send delegations to Europe to promote Canada’s commercial seal hunt. I'm sure that holds true for her recent propagandizing junket to China as well.
The rescue a few years ago by the Canadian Coast Guard of the ice-bound sealers in their non-ice class wooden-hull longliners set back the Canadian taxpayers at least $3.4 million. A lot of Canadians are miffed at that one too.
Posted by: Mike Quinoa | January 25, 2010 02:40 PM
The funny thing is, this woman probably considers herself a victim and feels very sorry for herself. While i dont really condone acting out like this against someone you don't agree with - what we're talking about here is actually MURDER, the everyday, systematic murder of living beings and well - for anyone with a conscience, it requires drastic measures.
Posted by: Annette | January 25, 2010 02:48 PM
Use a lemon pie next time they sting the eyes more.
For pie in the sky thinking that the seal hunt is humane deserves a pie in the face.
Posted by: Robert | January 25, 2010 02:50 PM
She's lucky. I'm sure a pie to the face is far less painful than a hakapik to the head!
Posted by: Ms. Agape | January 25, 2010 03:02 PM
You're proud of this?
Posted by: Joe Joe | January 25, 2010 03:09 PM
haha nice! but i think she would deserve more...
Posted by: Nessa | January 25, 2010 03:11 PM
"Bravo to the brave and compassionate pie thrower!"
No, this isn't brave and compassionate, it's stupid and paints PETA in a bad light.
There is a good way to show how much you care about animals, but instead you choose to do something that makes people think "PETA acts like fools, therefore PETA doesn't know what they're talking about."
There is a way to protest and make your point without resorting to these tactics. The reason your group isn't seen as animal rights is because you stoop to these tactics.
If you want to succeed, start making a true difference for animals, not this stuff.

The public pressure grows, better realize it, Ms. Shea.
Ban the use of "seal products", get the fur out of your thoughts !!!

Gail Shea is a liar and a criminal.
She belongs in JAIL.
Posted by: John | January 25, 2010 04:15 PM
A lot of people rely on the seal hunt for income and it also keeps the numbers down so that the fisheries can remain viable. I don't agree with the manner in which the hunt is carried out, but it is necessary.
Posted by: RNC | January 25, 2010 04:17 PM
You people relly need to get ALL the facts. Until then, the USA and all these people supporting PETA will continue to have no problem with their own government supporting death squads in South America and other continents. USA supplied Iraq with chemical warfare in early 80's but when it seemed to be in their own interests they used it as an excuse to invade. The murder of chickens, pigs, cows etc. is FAR more inhumane than seals...they just are not as cute. Get real
Posted by: gerard Tobin | January 25, 2010 04:40 PM
I think that was funny. but she deserves more than just a pie in the face lol
Posted by: Jenna | January 25, 2010 04:55 PM
Stunts like this are the reason why peta has so much influence and is so widely listened to and followed. Most people like peta and do what peta says, because things like this persuade almost everyone.
Posted by: kelly | January 25, 2010 05:00 PM
Um...thanks for the heads-up about chickens, pigs, cows, etc. Obviously you haven't spent much time at PETA's web site. Why don't you put down the crack pipe and check it out? You'll see you're not saying anything we don't already know. Nice try.
Posted by: lulu | January 25, 2010 05:21 PM
RNC,
It wasn't the seals that wiped out the cod industry, it was human greed. Seals actually helped keep squids (who are voracious fish-eaters) in check. I don't eat fish since I only like my mercury in a thermometer.
"A lot of people rely on the seal hunt for income."
Hardly. Even in Newfoundland, where more than 90 percent of the sealers live, sealing income accounts for less than 1 percent of that province's gross domestic product and only 2 percent of the landed value of Newfoundland's fishery.
Posted by: Mike Quinoa | January 25, 2010 05:32 PM
As a Canadian I deplore the Harper government, but this is disgraceful behaviour regardless of the victim's politics or position. It is a personal assault pure and simple.
I don't understand why supposedly intelligent people think it helps their cause to humiliate individuals. It seems, however, that Ms Shea handled the assault with poise and dignity. Good for her.
As for her U.S.-based attacker, I suggest the Canadian government bring back the stocks for a few days so Canadians can give the attacker a "taste" of her own medicine before we throw her back across the border--preferably tarred and feathered...o.k., o.k., molassesed and feathered (we are Canadian, after all).
The basic point is that acting out your aggression, while it may make you feel good for a few moments, makes you look juvenile and immature, which defeats your cause.
Posted by: Nick Wright | January 25, 2010 05:37 PM
How can she be so ignorant! Seal slaughter isn't accepted any longer in the world! The Canadian industry maybe has difficulties to sell the furs and for that reason her disgracing proposal to use it in the uniforms, but that doesn't make it better! Got a pie, it was maybe obvious that something like "pie" happens after claiming to support seal slaughter. How can she still support it? Nobody wants your s**t bloody fur!
Posted by: Klara | January 25, 2010 05:53 PM
Ralph,
I still maintain the pie-thrower is brave and compassionate. She did what she did out of compassion. She also would be aware of the inevitable consequences of her actions—most likely detainment and possible jail time. To carry out her actions in spite of these personal risks in my view is a mark of bravery.
Lulu,
Nicely phrased comment. You took the words right out of my mouth, though I couldn't have said it as well.

So I came here to see if you guys had a blog on it...and you did...
It's soo funny....
You guys are getting your message out!!

Kelly wrote: Stunts like this are the reason why peta has so much influence and is so widely listened to and followed. Most people like peta and do what peta says, because things like this persuade almost everyone.
>>>>>>>>>>>>
No Kelly, this is why the general public sees PETA as a farce and a laughing stock. They follow to see what stupid stunt PETA does next, and I do mean PETA as the group, not what the acronym stands for.
I have rarely seen this group actually have successful protests, and for the most part, they tend to just shrug their shoulders and go "This is a stupid PETA prank, how does this help the animals?"
Posted by: jade | January 25, 2010 06:31 PM
How dare you assault someone like that and then brag about it? I don't agree with slaughtering of baby seals and am vegan myself, but I hope you realize that far more people would listen to your message if you stopped being so extreme and STOPPED BEING SO SEXIST IN YOUR BILLBOARDS AND PRINT ADS!!!!!! Two wrongs don't make a right.
Posted by: christina | January 25, 2010 06:41 PM
Is Canada a democracy?
Stop the seal hunt 75% of Canadians are opposed. A pie for Gail is a message to those in power. Listen to the people who put you in power!.
Posted by: PAUL MIDGHALL | January 25, 2010 06:54 PM
Amber says this lady is lucky she didn't get a club in the face. Presumably this is because she is complicit in the murder of seals?
Do the seals deserve a club in the face for the murder of several "sea kittens" per day?

I was having a bad day at work and this turned my day around. I cant stop watching it! Hahahahahaha!!!

I was so glad to see her get a pie in the face, but at the same time, watching that news clip really saddened me because I cannot believe that in Canada it's ok to hunt seals. This is so terrible and makes me so angry! It's sickening that there are people in the world who just don't have souls and have no respect for animals' lives.

The sad thing is that judging by the size of her she probably enjoyed the pie.
Posted by: susan | January 25, 2010 09:52 PM
Proud of her for doing this! While some may say its not good for the cause, it will cause more people to look into what is going on when they see this in the news - which will cause more people to get involved in stopping the massacre. And what is a little pie in the face? Big deal. It comes off with water. I think she got less than what she deserved, but enough to get the message across.

Posted by: Kim | January 26, 2010 08:13 AM
sorry ralph but i think this made the point exactly..shes lucky, maybe she would think differently if she felt a steel pike in her head instead of a pie in the face..the woman is living in the dark ages if she accepts the horrific slaughter of thousands of baby seals as humane and acceptable, sometimes you have to resort to such measures as pie throwing to get your point accross!!!!
Posted by: anne hoesch | January 26, 2010 08:21 AM
We can't wait to see someone from peta somewhere... A flipper pie is waiting!!!
Posted by: Jake | January 26, 2010 08:38 AM
If we want someone to FEEL, then we need to teach in a way that people can hear. What is Ms Shea attached to. What does she FEEL love for? Compare that love to the love of our creatures, and maybe then she will identify. That doesn't mean hurt what she loves, just compare and plant a seed.
Posted by: Sandra | January 26, 2010 09:21 AM
Jake, go back to the hole you crawled out of (NL I suppose). This is a board for animal lovers and you ain't one of them.

Bill Donaldson, this was hardly a vicious attack. Please! Vicious is what is being done to these baby seals. And for calling people "punks" you need to watch your choice of words.Get a life!
Posted by: susan | January 26, 2010 10:12 AM
Haha some government dude from Newfoundland wants this to be considered terrorism!? Our governements don't listen to the majority, they think about helping industry (what is that anyway a mindless machine?) and then when they recieve a mild sanction from civil society they try to pull the terrorism card to silence people who have the courage to stand up to them.
It's amazing what lengths people will go to to protect the slaughter of animals, instead of simply changing their minds and living in a healthier way.
Posted by: Robert | January 26, 2010 10:19 AM
@NT: Although I wouldn't have the guts to pie someone, I also know that conventional means rarely, if ever, get the world's attention. I applaud the activist for bringing attention to this issue. I'm involved in trying to close an abusive shelter that people have trying to close for over 30 years; we're finally getting close! But conventional means simply haven't worked...anyway, let's just hope this inhumane practice STOPS SOON!!!!! Peace, Vontra
Posted by: Vontra | January 26, 2010 10:26 AM
Are the pies you throw Vegan? Because a little part of me wants them to be (responsibly sourced) fish guts! :) Good Job PETA!
Posted by: Lauren Holt | January 26, 2010 11:47 AM
As Robert mentioned above, a Newfoundland Member of Parliament is trying to play the "You're a terrorist" card. It's very obvious the activist did not want to harm Ms. Shea—a tofu cream pie is not exactly a lethal weapon.
Emily the intrepid pie-pusher might receive some jail time (which I'm sure she's expecting and prepared for).
The sentence should be consistent with past Canadian political pieings though. In the past, out of four pieings, three of the pie-wielders received 30 days in jail, and one a conditional sentence.

I am Canadian but sad to say definitely not a so called 'Proud Canadian'. Today I am truly grateful for the actions of the young women who pied the despicable Gail Shea. Her and her ilk make me sick. I am afraid Canada is very quickly going to the dogs under this dreadful neo-con government that we have up here.

i love it! a pie in the face may just wake this demon lady up.
what i find ironic is that the few people who say the pie in the face was such a terrible assult are the same people who probably cheered on as they hung Saddam Hussein. if you aren't able to understand, perhaps you should imagine they are clubbing baby humans out there on the ice.
That creepy lady deserves far worse than a pie.

NT your right, I am from NL but I and many others here deplore the seal hunt. I wrote the NL gov more times than many people asking that the hunt be stopped. I'm just getting sick of idiots like Emily McCoy so much that I think its time to give back to these idiots. People like Emily McCoy are not helping the cause. Also, Newfoundland and Labrador is no hole. Your not going to get much help from a Province or Country if you keep tarring everyone with the same brush.
Posted by: Jake | January 26, 2010 05:29 PM
As a Canadian citizen, born and raised in Northern Ontario, I have to say that I abhore the practice of sealing. Good God it is cruel beyond belief. All this nonsense about sealing being necessary to support the livelihoods of a few people is just incredible b.s.-- there are so many other ways to make a living.
Kudos to Emily McCoy for putting herself in harm's way to speak out for those who cannot. Emily, you're my hero!

It's very obvious the activist did not want to harm Ms. Shea—a tofu cream pie is not exactly a lethal weapon. - Mike Quinoa.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Mike, some people are allergic to soy, and had the minister of fisheries been this case, Miss Emily would be in even more trouble than for just throwing a pie.
Meaning, if the woman was allergic to soy and had a reaction, the assault charges would go up and become more severe.
Care should always be taken in things like this - I'm not fond of the protesting tactics, but I don't want anyone harmed because of this.
Posted by: Ralph | January 26, 2010 05:40 PM
I must say that this is the reason that i have always loved Peta... a simple pie can get peaple talking. i am a Canadian and am embarrased that this MP speaks for me... i don't know anyone that thinks the kill of seals is right
Posted by: Richard | January 26, 2010 07:10 PM
"a tofu cream pie is not exactly a lethal weapon."
It could easily be. What if Ms. Shea had been allergic to soy?
Posted by: MH | January 26, 2010 09:47 PM
I read today that Shea is now more determined than ever to protect sealers after the pieing incident. Real mature there Shea!

Just need to say that I am 100% against the seal hunt slaughter, or the killing of
any animal.
I have two dog buddies and love them as much as I'd love any child.
I just can't support Peta who is proud of the pie thrower. People will often be hateful, unkind, wrong, etc. believing different than us; this isn't a perfect world, if it was Peta wouldn't be needed.
We need to act and react with honorable ways or we are no better than they are!
We can't force everyone to do right, look at the abortion issue. Some people hate murder of children as I do, but when one becomes a murder killing docters etc. we are then no better than they are.

Kim, to quote what you said...
"Such childish behaviour. I am proud to be a Canadian and you would think in this day and age that hungry children would be a far better thing to lobby for. You people are disgusting."
I think you are talking about animals activists if I am not mistaken. I just wanted to let you know that animal rights go hand in hand with hungry children (well, hunger in general!) because we feed the majority of our food to animals that are fed to humans for meat. Veggies and grains will feed more people than meat. For example, all of the grains that are fed to feed our meat could be used to feed many more people than the meat it goes to feed. Meat is not only inhumane, but a terrible waste of resources. So being active for animals is not only helping animals, but humans as well. And since when are animal activists not allowed to be ative for more than one cause?
Posted by: Bethany | January 27, 2010 11:38 AM

I would like, for just one moment, to place Ms. Shea in the body of one of those baby seals so she can truly feel the pain as they get beaten to death, dragged and slaughtered. The terror that they must feel. I can't even begin to understand how some can be so cruel.
Posted by: Anna | January 27, 2010 01:54 PM
I can't say that I'm a large follower of the animal rights movement but I support PETA's ability to show that it's important to stand up for what you believe in. Just make sure you're pies are aimed at everyone that currently holds a position in Canadian government, they are all corrupt.

Nice try to make seal products more attractive... "killing them with one blow" - do you know what? Pictures from wherever executions still take place come into my mind... one direct shot... you kill them and that's a fact you can't wipe away.
"in the long run" maybe there's a food shortage...till then we maybe find something better than killing them. Let them live, please !!!
And if PETA had not taken a pie this time, another animal supporter maybe the next days!

Your all sad sad people. can you not find anything better to do than come on here and cry over a pie, she deserved it and i hope it happens again. What harm did it actually do? josh, when you think of the immense cruelty that these places put defenceless animals through on a daily basis i dont blame bruce for saying it, But he's hardly gonna do it is he, no one is gonna do it, but it doesnt hurt to wish for it. When i think of animals especially primates being tortured and beaten in labs I wish they would blow up, doesnt mean im gonna go and blow it up.

His statement was just a broad generalization—a what-if. What are the chances that ALL the fast-food outlets, slaughterhouses, laboratories and the banks that fund them would explode tomorrow?
He's just venting. If people could read our thoughts, I'm sure we'd all be thrown in jail.

Sure, pie is maybe not the best argument to fight for something. But it's not the first time in history that someone honors a politician for thoughtless statements by offering her/him "a snack" and this time it was only a pie!
Sad that some now make a terroristic attack out of it and PETA's reputation
gets another patch - hope in the long run it's a golden one !!!
How can one turn ignorance into compassion?

i find it's HILARIOUS that PETA is label as 'terrorist-group'

It seems ridiculous to me that an organization that preaches ethical treatment would endorse or advocate such an action. Obviously PETA has a different agenda than preventing acts of cruelty and violence.

@ impartial spectator
i don't see how you can compare the two. that is, the unbelievably cruelty and sadistic violence of modern industrial factory farming with something as benign as getting pied, which is usually seen as a political protest.

Wow, I'm very surprised. I'm currently writing a speech about the seal hunt, but it seems my point of view is very different then most people's here. It's seems like I'm one of the few people that have read up on this. I'm all for animal rights, but this is a normal hunt. The baby seals are not touched and nor is clubs used.

I am Canadian and oppose the seal hunt for many reasons and it puts Canada in a terrible light internationally. I also am againt the present governement's stand on Kyoto. Pieing this woman may bring temporary satisfaction to those fed up with the ongoing seal hunt however won't do much in the long run. She feels victimized but sadly can't feel anything for the seals that are victimized.
