Earlier today, intrepid firefighters risked their lives to rescue a dog who was trapped in the cold, treacherous waters of the Los Angeles River for two hours. A helicopter lowered one of the firefighters, who waded through the strong current, scooped up the dog, and carried him safely back to the helicopter, maintaining his composure even as he suffered repeated dog bites! For this stunning act of bravery, we're giving the Los Angeles Fire Department our Compassionate Action Award. Check out the astonishing live footage here:

If the dog does not have a guardian, I hope someone adopts him so he and his rescuers did not go through all that only to have to euthanize the poor dog.

I have a feeling someone threw the dog over the bridge, that's why he was so terrified of humans. Anyway, THANK YOU firefighters, you deserve lots of blessings after saving an innocent life.

Even though the terrified Pooch tried to take his arm and hand off, this brave man held on and ultimately saved the dog's life. I salute him for his humanity and bravery.

I am very happy for he poor thing :)

But what ticks me off is the thought that if that was a squirrel in that situation no one would care about the squirell, but when its a dog they do. It irritates me how people take certain animals over others :/

Posted by: Amanda | January 24, 2010 03:43 PM

It irritates me also, is it the familiarity, the size?
Interesting is: give an animal a name and it gets a friend (remember the goat)

Just amazing!

Great rewards awaiting those fire fighters.

It's times like these that remind me that the human race hasn't gone to pot. If more people were like this, the world would be a better place.

Real men don't hurt animals....this guy is a hero.

There's not enough words to describe how proud and happy I was when I saw this incredible rescue. I was born and raised in L.A. and we have the best fire dept. right here. Hope his hand wounds heal quickly and the dog gets a wonderful home for life.
