Tel Aviv has become the first city in Israel to prohibit horse-drawn carriages, thanks largely to years of tireless campaigning by Concern for Helping Animals in Israel (CHAI) and its sister organization, Hakol Chai. Their efforts included organizing international letter-writing campaigns, educational presentations in schools, a benefit concert, and a rousing demonstration outside City Hall.
Because CHAI and Hakol Chai were determined to make a difference, exhausted, sick, and injured horses and donkeys will no longer be beaten and whipped by metal and junk peddlers who force them to pull huge, heavy carriages in dangerous, busy traffic in Tel Aviv.

This success story has inspired me to try to score a similar victory for exhausted, abused horses closer to home, so I've added, "Write to New York City councilmembers—again—re horse-drawn carriages," to the top of my to-do list. Won't you do the same?

Israel is by far the most humane and civilzed country in the Middle East. They have animal sanctuaries and savory meatless eateries. Many prominent Rabbis are vegetarian. Avi Kuzi is a renowned vegan and animal rescuer who saves cats, dogs and other creatures from life and death situations. I read about him in the Jerusalem Post.

It about time! These poor horses shouldn't be on hard surfaces like concrete all the time. Fingers crossed that the rest of the world recognises this!

NYC, HELLO!! are you watching. NYC progressive? Not when it comes to other species. NYC administration has been very hostile to other species. This is why some politicians were voted out and a lot of them barely won their reelection. the people don't want horse drawn carriages in NYC. IT is cruel and unsafe. Do the right thing and ban this cruel industry now

ofGreat news!! But in India this practise still continues in some part the country. And people are so brutal towards these animals. They just whip a cane or beat the animals. Thats sad. But nice that this city has moved ahead and stooped this torture.

that is just so STUPID!!!!! u shouldn't treat horses or any other animals that way. if your going 2 have a horse pull a carriage then you have to treat it right. also u shouldn't beat a horse with a whip so hard either. so i say " if your going to have animals them TREAT THEM RIGHT"

I AM VERY GLAD TEL AVIV HAS BANNED HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGES. IT'S A SHAME THAT THE TOP OFFICIALS IN ISRAEL DO NOT FEEL THAT SLAUGHTERING THE PALASTINES WOULD BE MORE IMPORTANT. I AM NOT MAKING A JOKE. I TRIED ALL SUMMER IN THIS LITTLE TOWN I LIVE IN TO BAN THESE NEW YORK CARRIAGE HORSES TO CEASE AND DESIST. I WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN FOR THE RIGHTS OF ALL OF GOD'S CREATIONS.
