When I was 16 years old, I was invited to a picnic. When I arrived, I was shocked to realize that I'd actually been invited to a pig roast—big difference. The sight of a whole charred pig turning on a spit with an apple stuck in his mouth was all I needed to convince myself that I'd never eat pork, i.e. pig, again.
The pig was already dead, and I knew nothing about his journey from his mother's womb to the fire pit. I didn't need to—after all, I called myself an "animal lover," so it was a simple, logical decision. If I wouldn't eat my dog, I wasn't going to eat a pig.
Despite the overwhelming evidence that pigs and other animals on factory farms routinely endure horrific abuses, millions of people continue to happily chow down on hot dogs and ham. Today, Fox News offers food for thought—the Web site is featuring exclusive undercover video footage taken by Mercy for Animals at Country View Family Farms, one of Pennsylvania's largest pork producers and a Hatfield Quality Meat supplier.
The video shows a slew of horrors, including workers as they hurl baby pigs and slam them into transport carts, pick piglets up by their ears and tails, cut off the animals' tails with pliers, and rip off their testicles with their bare hands without any painkillers. (The sound of screaming piglets in the video made my skin crawl.) Their squealing mothers are shown scrambling to escape workers who slam spiked mallets into the animals' sides. Many pigs bear sores from their constant confinement—one mother pig suffered an excruciating prolapsed rectum for at least 13 days before she was killed.
Folks, this video is tough to view (I had to pause it three times), but as caring people, we owe it to ourselves and the animals it shows to watch it and then pass it on to others—along with a link to GoVeg.com. You can share the video and the link via e-mail, via a link on your Facebook page, and via "tweets." Anyone you know who still needs convincing that animals suffer on factory farms won't question it after they've watched this footage.

This is the most disguting act and we all need to take a stand and refuse to purchase or eat factory farmed meat. Take a stand because we are the voice for these innocent animals....

The killing of any of our fellow creatures for food to placate our palates is anathema.
Posted by: Brien Comerford | November 16, 2009 05:19 PM
Go vegetarian and stop supporting this ruthless, hideous industry!
Posted by: Alex Macias | November 16, 2009 06:17 PM
What a horrible act...These people are being so cruel to these poor animals. What pleasure do they get by injuring pain to these animals? It's a sick thing and we all should really do something about it. Animals should never be treated like this is. It's an awful thing...

This Video was very hard to watch. Farm animals torture before being slaughter. I hate farm workers and their cruelty towards animals. I think more people need to watch this video and think twice before buying meat at their local grocery.

Today I watched the Fox News story and wept. Hopefully, the sights of the horrific, unbelievable torture that is inflicted upon these innocent creatures will convince a few more people to stop eating murdered animals.

So sad to see such horrible abuse of these defenseless animals, especially the mothers and their piglets. I've been vegan for almost 3 years now and will continue to urge family and friends to become more informed about the horrors of factory farmed animals.

How anyone could be mean to or hurt ANY animal, is beyond me.
Posted by: Chuck Piorkowski | November 16, 2009 08:55 PM
This is horrible.

The most disturbing thing about this video is that it didn't surprise me.
Posted by: Aneliese | November 16, 2009 09:29 PM
Oh my goodness.. this is horrible.. I'm so glad I no longer eat any meat or any animal products at all.. I hate how uncompassionate humans are to our follow animals. I can't believe I used to eat hot dogs and ham ugh it makes me sick to think about ugh.. People who still continue to eat pork as well as any animal products cannot say that they are an animal lover because true animal lovers don't eat animals. Factory farms needs to go out of business.. NOW!!

These videos break my heart but I watch them because I do owe it to these animals & because it reaffirms my decision to stay veg.

Finally! They are putting animal abuse on television without everyone yelling and screaming about those crazy "activists". Go Fox News!!

it is up to give a voice to the voiceless....it is our duty as a society to educate others about this and have them pass the word around about stopping this

How could a person do this, How much would you have to pay someone? It shows that some people have no respect for life

in the words of Mahatma Ghandi, “ The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

This is why I am vegatarian , I do not want these scenes on my conscience.
I appeal to anyone who has compassion in their hearts to go vegetarian now and help rid the world of this total barbaric cruelty.

So, what's gonna happen to these abusers??? I'm calling the farm directly and am raising the roof-no need for abuse-their lives suck as it is!! WTF is wrong with people???
Posted by: lori | November 17, 2009 08:21 AM
whats really so,so, sad is that no matter what, most people do not care enough to stop eating meat.

I cried, what can we do ,to stop this ,Iam going to look up these farms and call them up,the pigs suffering like that ,I need to get back to work on this, one person ,one animal saved at a time, make progress.Mercy for Animals watched all their videos.great group!

For everyone who is sickened by this video - don't just sit and wish it would all end but get out on the streets and educate people. Distribute leaflets, give out DVD's ect - PETA will be happy to provide all of this free of charge, go order and get out there and educate to liberate.

This video needs to be aired on ALL news channels. We must get the word out there and fast! This abuse is unacceptable and certaintly unnecessary and why it continues to go on is beyond me. We all must work together and get this video coverage on more news channels. We can do it! We have to do it, we need to help these animals. They shouldn't have to suffer like this. I can't even bare to think about the pain and misery they go through day in and day out. THIS MUST STOP!!
Posted by: Kathymarie | November 17, 2009 11:49 AM
After reading the entire article, I just got more pissed off. How about Butch Baker, the swine veterinarian, being so upset about the animal rights activists and how they are trying to hurt farmers. He didn't even mention how horrible the footage and abuse actually was. What an a**hole. Every single farm needs to have camera's installed so that an outside agency can review what's really going on. GO VEGAN!

I once went to an infant baptism where the poor roasted pig was in the center of the table.

Most disturbing video I have ever seen in my life. I was at work, when the news broke on Fox and I cried at my desk. How can humans be so mean...these pigs have a nervous system, they feel pain....i feel so helpless

I am not a vegan yet! actually i've tried a couple of times..however..after watching this f!# video...I promise....this time i `ll do my best..i'll freaking stop eating meat! poor piggies do not deserve to be treated this way just so we can eat their meat...that stinks!

The bastards who treat these poor animals this way should be shot.
Posted by: Robert | November 17, 2009 03:24 PM
I have not watched it but after reading all coments i feel sick to my stomach! I have just googled the farm and emailed them telling them excatly what i think! we cant let this go something has to be done to help these poor animals

I am vegetarian so obviously I don't eat meat. But for those who do (and wish to continue) have a choice. There are farmers out there who do not treat their animals in such a barbaric and viscious way. In the UK it is referred to as ethical farming and any meat products carry a logo to show that it has met the correct standards of animal welfare during the animal's life and slaughter. Campaign to create new government legislation that rules out and bans certain horrific practices. It took the UK a while, but we have some of the best "intensive" (as opposed to Free Range) farms in Europe. Like I say I choose not to eat meat but I have friends who do and they are concious about where their food comes from. Not everyone is going to stop eating meat and by demanding they turn vegetarian is not going to win the argument. But by showing them there is an alternative to factory farming is progress. In my opinion it is the the meat eating consumer who needs to be targeted in a positive way because if there isn't a demand for their product farmers are going to have to make changes for the better.

this is 100% terribly devastating!
Posted by: gabby | November 17, 2009 04:04 PM
I completely disagree with this video, i am a farmer and i NEVER heard of anything similar to this in my life, and i just happen to live in Pennsylvania. If that factory treated those pigs in that way, they would make NO money what so ever.
This video cant possibly be accurate.

I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO HIT THOSE MORONS WITH THOSE SPIKED MALLETS. IT MAKES ME SICK TO SEE THE WAY THESE POOR ANIMALS ARE TREATED.

I'm gonna throw up. Honestly, it is difficult to want to live in a world where this is possible. It scares me to think of the cruelty people are capable of. I hate myself for ever eating meat. I will stay vegan for life!!!

I went onto the PETA website today because I heard that there was going to be coverage on HLN yesterday about pig farm abuse. They said the video would be disturbing. I missed the coverage but knew if I watched it, I would not be able to sleep at night and it would haunt me during the day--forever. This is what happened to me when I saw the undercover work in China regarding the horrible abuse to dogs and cats. I had to switch channels. The fear in the cats' eyes and the trust of the dog before he was skinned alive left an impression on me. It's the first thing I think about when I go to bed at night. That is why I cannot watch this video. I love animals and am very disturbed about animal abuse. I had to switch channels when they were showing undercover footage of how the Japanese harpoon whales and they literally blow up. God bless the beasts and the children. Remember the song? It is so true. My dad raised hogs and was very kind to them. He didn't have a factory farm as they do now. Dad said not only are pigs extremely smart, they are the cleanest of animals when in the proper environment. The love mud puddles because they don't have sweat glands. They do it to keep cool. It always bothered me when I knew they were loaded onto trucks to go to the stockyards. Anyway, I wish I could watch the video, but it will upset me very much. All I can do is pray for these poor animals. The level of cruelty to animals in our society and in other countries is very upsetting. I hope this video is posted on YouTube.

This is sick. This should not be happening. These men think they are men by hurting defenseless animals. Are they that stupid to think that animals don't have feelings. I hope America 'pensylvania' shut down the factory and punish these murderes. Even if you eat meat the animals should never suffer like this. This is barbaric and unhuman. Sick idiots.
Posted by: Devi Bloem | November 17, 2009 06:52 PM
As someone who comes from the pork industry, i'll have you know that most pigs are not treated like in this video. In fact i know very many swine farmers who wouldn't even think of harming their pigs that way. you may think it is bad to be casturized and have their tail cut off as a piglet, but its just what happens. Have you ever seen a lamb with a long tail? most likely you havent. that's because the tail gets docked off. it is supposed to be that way. People have the option of keeping the tails on..but it's not a necessity. Just think if a human was born with a tail..which it has, doctors cut the tail off them too. This video shows some of the worst ethical things to be doing on a farm..but once you see this video you suddenly judge other farmers and think that we all do the same things to our animals. there are very few people who abuse there animals and actually get to sell their meat on the market. You can usually tell just by looking at the meat whether the animal has been beat or had alot of stress in its life because of the owner. I'm not saying that this video is wrong with the gas chambers and such. I don't know anyone who uses them. but when they talk about how we 'tear holes in the ears to put tags' and u see that it looks so painful...its not in fact it probably hurts less than YOU getting your ears pierced. They show that pig squealing because it is a stubborn pig...most of them are. But it really honestly does not hurt. and i actually would know. if u take the stress level of a pig before and after they get tagged...there is no difference unless you corner the pig and actually make it stressful for them. Also for the stamping that they do. they just swing the tattoo hammer so you can tell which pig is which. It is a short little prick and that's all the feel. The video shows how 'hard' they hit the pigs...but in actuality, they are just swinging it fast so it doesnt hurt. Otherwise they would have to press down hard on the stamper; that would hurt the pigs even more. It shows the metal spikes...well people get tattoos all the time and i bet the people who go out and get tattoos are in worse pain than these pigs. I just thought i would let you know what i thought of this video. most parts yes, are very graphic and spine chilling, but maybe you should show the public positive things that happen in the swine industry. you probably wont post this because i'm so fourth 'against' peta, but i wouldn't be if you actually did a little more research about all farms, not just the worst animal treating farms you can find.

i can't believe human beings can be so selfish and cold hearted. i can't support the meat industry anymore than i would support concentration camps. we as people must take a stand and speak out for those with no voice!!
Posted by: mari | November 17, 2009 09:40 PM
This is unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!! I only watched the first few seconds and decided I couldn't watch the whole thing! I'm already a vegetarian; here's just one more reason why!

i always want to share this with friends to raise their conscious...they refuse to view it and dont want to know...and continue to ridicule me for being vegan...oh well..i cant bury my head in the sand
Posted by: lance | November 17, 2009 10:36 PM
the pig vid was awful but the chicken vid when the just kill all the male birds by trowing them live in a blender.i mean can't they sell them or give them a way, they would be saving electricity by doing this to so you save a life and the environment. come on ppl this cant be right.

This is so disgusting. :( Thank god for the brave Mercy for Animals investigator and for Fox News for bringing this to the attention of millions of Americans. Maybe it's time they go vegetarian.

We can be as outraged as we want but until we start walking the walk (i.e.becoming a veg or vegan) or talking the talk we have acomplished nothing. We have changed nothing. I explained to people I work with who saw part of the video that this cruelty happens every day of every year to farm animals. It is only when they are caught on undercover video that the general public sees a glimpse of the inhumanity that these animals endure. The giant agribusinesses through out their standard" we do not condone this kind of conduct on our farms "All the time knowing full well that the public will forget about it the next day and go right on ordering their holiday ham.
Posted by: Deborah Aiello | November 18, 2009 08:27 AM
This is fury inducing. There's nothing good about any of it. The guys in the video are probably traumatized as much as the pigs. Think about it. They probably have nightmares about what they're doing. If they're getting off on it then they're screwed as human beings and will never experience the joys of humanity, which is tragic for them. It's just tragic all round. And I'm not sure that killing pigs - or any other farm animal - "humanly" says all that much about humans, either.
Posted by: Jason | November 18, 2009 09:16 AM
Cried. Hopeless. But know I can do my bit to make others aware and fight for humane treatment of animals.

i didnt watch the video because im too scared to..that is sick and that farm needs to be shut down for avbusing animals like that. what can we do to help make this happen? does anyone know?

Most of the clips in this video are nasty. I have never seen (and I have been on a farm many, many times) the rectum coming out (the sow should have been shot the first day), and then moving with it bobbing up and down is just nasty and unethical. The gestation crates are very small and narrow. The farrow crates seem proper size. Sows crates shouldn't much bigger than the sow, or she will get hurt or stuck! The piglets dying is just natural (they either get crushed by the sow, get infected, or just die), but gassing them seems somewhat cruel, as opposed to just let them die. Castrating the piglets with painkillers seem unnecessary, because I have seen many piglets be just fine a second later once their down receiving the shot and castration. Slapping the sows with the spike is odd and unnuasual (they should have used store-bought animal markers!). These acts overall do seem very unethical and unreal.

I posted a comment on PETA a few days ago. That night I went onto their website--Country View Valley Farms--to get an idea of their operation. (I was not able to watch the video because it is too upsetting for me.) I sent them a comment, and it was long. They are not fooling me one iota. I grew up on a farm in the 40s and 50s. There is nothing they can tell me about pigs and how they should be handled and cared for. My father raised hogs and was kind and caring. There is a statement on their website about how they handled the abuse situation and what they are doing to prevent it from happening again. Has anyone seen the size of those barns? They would hold thousands of sows and piglets. Please view a video that I posted on YouTube today called, "All About Pigs." There is something all of us can do to help change animal abuse. If PETA and other organizations like PETA did not exist, look how much we wouldn't know. I know some of you are like me. You don't want to watch the videos or even hear about it because it is so painful. So we can be the ones to write letters and spread the word on the Internet for the whole world to see. Although it feels overwhelming for me at times, I do feel a responsibility to do something. Like I said in my video, God gave man dominion over animals, but that does not give anyone the right to abuse animals. Personally, and you have to be an animal lover to even understand this, I put animals on the same level as humans. No one is going to change my mind on this topic even though many have disagreed with me. The point is: it's my life, and I love animals. That's the bottom line. They may be missing free will but they possess other qualities even mightier than our own. I appreciate PETA and other similar groups so much because I know I, as one person, cannot make a significant impact. However, together we can make a difference. People who love animals have much in common. Compassion is so important in this life. Some of us are fighters and some of us go about it is a more subtle manner. Either way, it's a good thing. I just thank God for animal lovers and those who are willing to make a difference.

I am not an emotional person, however, I can't watch these videos because I will def. ruin my mascara. I'm already a vegetarian. I know that if I wasn't and I saw these videos, I would become one right away. No matter how much I enjoyed meat. I actually have a conscience. It's really sad that not many people do.
Posted by: Vee | November 21, 2009 10:06 PM
I made the decision not to watch the video only because I have seen a video before put out by PETA on skinning of animals while they were still alive. This was enough! I'll never forget that. All of the animal abuse around the world needs to stop. You know if these animals could talk like you and I it probably would not be happening. We as humans are the voice of these innocent victims of curcumstances. Officials need to go to these farms and put these people under arrest for animal cruelty. They do it elsewhere. There should be no exceptions. Law Enforcement in this state take a stand. Shut them down so not another pig or any other type of animal has to suffer at the hands of another human (that in this case I'm ashamed to say I'm apart of) OMG Do something please!!! I've been reading on PETA's material for years on investigations and all the things that are revealed on abuse. It seems like it just keeps getting worse. Are we really helping? Drastic measures need to be taken by the people. They (PETA)can't do it alone!
Posted by: Debbie Kallenborn | November 23, 2009 03:04 AM
Ok. There is some ethical farms, but I think the point is that despite the fact that animals aren't tortured in a way like this video shows, they are killed in any way. There is no reason for killing animals now a days, because humans (researchers) discovered that we have many food options besides eating meat. So the only reason for people to eat meat is because of its taste. This kind of selfish present in human beings are unjustifiable. Animals have the right to live without human interference.

Just the fact that a pig has to spend all her life in an iron maidenis so wrong not to mention urinate and defecate in the same spot often times while nursing her babies, IS standard in the factory farm business.
When I was in high school my friends and I went to the Peanut Festival in Dothan, Al. There, they had an 'agricultural exhibit' and in the middle of that exhibit was a momma pig laying in an iron maiden and on the other sides of the thick iron bars the baby pigs were trying to nurse. Obviously, the mother pig was in extreme confinement. Because she was unable to move she wasd forced to urinate while nursi ng her piglets. There were so many people around and very noisy. People around her laughed when they saw her pee...I felt so sorry for that pig. That was the first time I ever saw farm animals in that condition and still haunts me to this day.
No, I no longer eat eggs, meat or drink milk knowing what I know.

This is awful but the cruelty continues. Humans, just one of many species, should be ashamed of ourselves for the suffering caused. The people who do this do it because they can. At least treat them with dignity and respect. It might also be useful for major supermarkets to have proper labeling on their products so we can all see how the meat we are buying has been raised and treated. This sadly is not the case as I found out when I asked a member of staff to provide information. There were no leaflets available either.
