Death by Botox

Posted at 04:52 PM | | CommentsComments (20)

On Sunday, the U.K. newspaper The Sunday Times ran a great article about a recent undercover investigation conducted at a Hampshire laboratory that tests Dysport—a wrinkle-erasing drug similar to Botox—on mice. The investigation was conducted by our friends at the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection, and among the most disturbing findings of the investigation was the fact that technicians repeatedly broke the backs of mice while attempting to kill them with ball-point pens. Yes, you read that right. Staffers then used the same ball-point pens to fill out their victims' death records.

Laboratory workers were also videotaped botching injections and swearing at rabbits. One staffer calls a struggling rabbit "a little s**t" and "a disgrace."

As with Botox, both in the U.S. and the U.K., each batch of Dysport is tested on animals. More than 41,000 mice were killed in Dysport tests in a six-month period at just this one laboratory.

Horrors like these don't just take place across the pond either. In the U.S. alone, it is estimated that more than 100 million mice and rats are killed in experiments every year. And here in the U.S. these sensitive, intelligent animals are not protected by any federal laws, even though they are the animals who suffer most frequently at the hands of animal experimenters. Investigation after investigation shows that these highly social animals are handled like they are disposable laboratory equipment instead of living animals who deserve respect and kindness.

This absolutely breaks my heart. I find it hard to imagine people can actually do this as a job. Most of them probably go home to their beloved pet cat or dog after work and not think think twice about it.

It's disgusting what torture animals suffer so washed-up celebrities can think they still look "in their prime".

I read this article on the Times Online. The readers were appalled by the monstrosities inflicted on these innocent, sentient and sacred creatures.

What's actually almost AS ridicules are the comments on The Sunday Times article.

Animals are not disposable items like a plastic fork.

My Fav. Comment:

bindi karper wrote:
"science should never have to appologise for the amazing advantages it has given the world, people like this should never have to feel bad about what they do, EVER"

Yeah, but none of these amazing advantages have come from animal testing, Bindi.

Wish you could write a direct reply to Bindi; it doesn't have that feature.

Thanks, PETA.

Ugh this is just so horrible.. how can they treat mice like this..

"a little s**t" and "a disgrace." Surely the technician was looking in the mirror at the time. ;-)

If their so worried about wrinkles they can test the stupid products on their own face!!! Leave the animals alone.

I guess the staffers didn't read the part of the animal care manual saying that cervical dislocations are humane only when performed by skilled individuals, and should never be done otherwise.

But geez....why so many mice? Why the overcrowded quarters?...must be industry experiments...you don't see stuff like this commonly in academic research.

Torturing and killing these poor little victims for cosmetics is about as sick as it gets!

no woman is beautiful that has botox, they are so full of themselves, mice and rats have their stomachs explode in the testing of botox, any woman who has it has the face of cruelty, Jordan openly brags she tops up with botox every few months, these vain women are ugly and false. check out, Naturewatch Compassionate guide to shopping and remember if you shop at Bodyshop, profits go to l,oreal who test on animals

The press should graphically inform readers of articles featuring cosmetic improvements as to what tests have been done and are still being done, and on which animals, in order to bring the product to market.

I'll take the wrinkles, with thanks, for having had the opportunity to live life without cruelty.

they really do that? that's terrible!

David, while this particular batch of experiments seem to be both useless and unnecessary, your statement is a myth...please don't propagate it. Anyone who says that instantly loses their credibility with all people capable of checking on their own via Google, etc.

Everyone who uses Botox has something I call the Botox mask: a face that cannot express emotion because it does not move. It looks sad and ridiculous!!

This makes me sick, it's disgusting

I can't believe anyone could be so vile. look how cute and adorable that poor little mouse is. what did he ever do to you?

Posted by: Amy | November 6, 2009 01:34 PM

I feel everyone who uses botox and products tested on animals is a disgrace. Nothing will be done about it though until women wake up to this (it's mainly womens vanity that is the issue). I'm sure the vast majority wouldn't dream of using these products if they knew what went on. Unfortunately it's easier to just look away.
