When our friends at PETA Germany found out that Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus was scheduled to tour throughout Germany this November, they immediately got to work brainstorming ways to get the tour stopped. Since many Germans aren't familiar with the U.S.-based circus, PETA Germany staffers began educating people about Ringling's abysmal track record of beating and abusing animals in order to force them to perform tricks that to them are confusing and unnatural.

Victory! Ringling's German Tour Canceled

Appalled by the idea that Ringling beats, chains, and cages elephants, tigers, horses, and many other animals, thousands of people contacted the managers of every arena where Ringling was scheduled to perform and expressed their concerns. And, guess what?

Ringling has confirmed that it will no longer be performing at all in Germany!

Want to get involved with putting an end to cruelty under the big top here in the U.S.? Use our automated form to urge the USDA and Secretary of Agriculture Thomas J. Vilsack to seize the elephants whom Ringling hauls around the country in filthy boxcars and forces to perform under the constant threat of punishment. The actions of caring people like you will make a difference for these elephants.

Way to go! Now let's do the same in the USA! I protested in Manchester NH and will do the same in Boston MA. Animals do not belong in circuses or zoos. Let them live in the wild where they belong. Many of these animals are bred for profit, not preservation. Help protect them!

I'm glad my parents never took me to a circus.

Now it's time for some questions I have!

Are those Asian elephants? From the angle, the ears seem too small to be African elephants. I don't know much about elephant anatomy or genetics, but are they supposed to have those white splotches primarily on their faces, truncks and ears? When I watched those videos in the section on this topic, I didn't know if those were natural or not (by the way, that video about the baby elephants made even more against circuses than I already am). How can they get away with this anyway? If you treat a dog like that, you get jail time, but what about the elephants, tigers and the like?

Well done, Germany! Nice to see a nation that is willing to stand up against animal cruely.

Excellent! Way to go Germany!
It saved so much pain for the animals. But how people can so easily set aside morals and ethics for economical gain is revolting. As if it wasn't bad enough keeping them locked up in tight spaces, but physically beating them! Why can't people understand that using animals for entertainment is wrong. Did prehistoric animals lock each other up and use them for entertainment? No! So why should we?

Fantastic news!! At long last someone has listened.... Now all we need is America to wake the hell up to the fact that animals DO NOT BELONG IN CIRCUSES. The footage on the Ringling Bros website makes me sick, the way these gorgeous, majestic animals are made to perform these rediculous tricks day after day, nite after nite.. is just pathetic..
When will they do the right thing and just have their circus animal-free? Hopefully soon..
Long live Peta and good for you Germany.. you rock!!

Good work PETA Germany! Now if our own country would follow Germany's lead! I feel discussed with our country in the way that we have highlighted what we consider to be inhumane in other countries and we still allow for barbaric treatment of our animals! I love what you are doing PETA in striving to make humane treatment universal! As it should be.

The whole world needs to wake up and realise that circuses are cruel and unnatural to animals

Way to go PETA Germany !! Now lets do the same with the USA!! This world is a mean and horrible place-God just cries when he looks down here-what a shame and I have a feeling there will be MANY, MANY people in HEll-where they belong!!

Posted by: Cindy Flynn | October 30, 2009 11:24 AM

These people that abuse these wonderful animals, do they not have any shame? I just cannot understand what type of people can do such horrid acts of abuse upon these animals. It is just so sickening, I'd love to beat them

This is amazing!!! Way to go Germany. Come on Americans, we can have the same compassion for the animal kingdom.

Posted by: Karen | November 1, 2009 02:21 PM

This is absolutely incredible. To have an ENTIRE country stand against such cruelty is completely inspiring. And imagine if Ringling WERE to perform there.. all the animals would go through hell having to travel all the way to Germany. This article just made my night.. AND tomorrow ;)

Exellent work! Thank you PETA Germany... every circus with animals should disapear from the face of the earth and the those worthless animal trainers with them. End animal suffering for human amusement!
