Michigan Bans Battery Cages and Crates

Yesterday was a momentous day for animals living on farms in Michigan, where Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed a bill into law that phases out veal crates, battery cages, and gestation crates on farms across the state!

Michigan farmers have been given three years to phase out veal crates and 10 years to get rid of gestation crates and battery cages. This means that farmers will no longer be allowed to immobilize calves in crates that are so small that the animals can barely take a step in any direction. Pregnant pigs will no longer be forced to live in their own excrement in a space too small to turn around in, and hens will get a chance to stretch their wings.
The news comes just a day after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill making it illegal to dock cows' tails in California, where gestation crates, veal crates, and battery cages were banned last year. Now that Michigan has become the seventh state to ban gestation crates, the fifth to ban veal crates, and the second to ban battery cages, we're hoping that laws improving conditions for animals on factory farms will continue to take the nation by storm.
Of course, the best way to prevent animal suffering is to adopt a vegan diet, stat.

Wow!!! This is FAN-tastic news!!! Thanks Gov. Granholm and many thanks to Gov. Schwarzenegger for sticking up for the animals!! Once factory farming comes a thing of the past, then there will be peace.

Happy to see MI making this step, but yes, less consumption of meat would be better for everyone.

Please please please if you live in these states email your state senators and representatives to thank them for voting on this action (if they did) and to ask them why if they did not! From michigan.gov it's fairly easy to find your congresspeople and contact them. Please do! Let them hear our voices of thanks!

This is GREAT!!!Its time someone knows the difference between RIGHT and WRONG and HAS COMPASSION in this cruel world.Its time we teach each other that cruelty is dead wrong and not acceptable anymore!I was worried we would all have hardened hearts like china,ect and easily accept all cruelty as a way to survive day to day.I agree we need to boycott meat,untill the matters are resolved,at least cut back.We eat way......too much and waste too much at the dinner table and those that don't are way to heavy for their own good.Cruelty is finally having limits,Ya!

Great news! But yes, why does it take so long? This is something that needed to be done long ago.The time to get this done should not have to be more than 1 year.

How can people justify this as a momentous achievement when such world-wide impoverishment still plagues the human race in forms of cruelty, inequity and starvation. All the bleeding hearts in this forum need to wake up, re-prioritize their value set and acknowledge truer and more grave injustices in today's society.

yer insensible remarks make precious little sense, taken as a whole.
it is unlogical and downright silly to criticize people for following their hearts and doing the right thing. vegans are not responsible for the maladies and injstices that you describe, cruelty, iniquity and starvation. your politically and culturally repressive "both eyes wide shut" boojwah DUMBYist comments are disgraceful and serve no useful purpose.
the pantheon of complaints that you describe here does not tell the whole story, nor does it make any sense, no of course not... but it does hint at the massive amounts of corruption and injustices done by governments and their peoples on the planet today.
and the only people that truly need to reprioritize their values are greedy, foul-mouthed, uncompassionate critical conformist drones like yerself.
