Jessica Simpson: Please Adopt Your New Furry Friend from a Shelter

Well, Jessica's thinking about opening her heart and home to a new pooch and word on the street is that she "wants a rescue dog."
We're thrilled to hear that she's thinking about rescuing a dog instead of buying one from a breeder. Today, we wrote to the star to urge her adopt her new friend from an animal shelter, pointing out that millions of dogs are euthanized at shelters every year simply because there aren’t enough homes for all of them. Even if she has her heart set on a particular breed, there are many purebreds at open-admission animal shelters and certainly many who are in the care of breed-specific rescue groups.
We hope, hope, hope that Jessica Simpson will join the long list of caring celebrities, including Charlize Theron, Katherine Heigl, Kyra Sedgwick, Audrina Patridge, and Alicia Silverstone, who have saved a life (or two or three) by adopting homeless animals.

I hope she adopts a rescue versus supporting gross breeders or puppy mills. C'mon Jessica....you can do it! I hope... :)

It would be great if she adopted a dog, but I was watching QVC last night and jessica Simson was on selling her Shoes and Purses made of leather.

adopting from a shelter is fine (I took in both of my dogs before they went to the shelter from people I knew that didn't want them) if you don't have children. But now that I have a child, I want to know the lineage of any other dog I bring into my home when the ones I have now pass on. YOu can't do that with shelter dogs so you have no way of knowing if they may have aggessive tendencies due to poor breeding practices such as inbreeding.

All 4 of our animals are from the shelter. My daughter took a pic of one of them & entered it in the fair and won best in show. The local paper did a story about them and got some great publicity for them. We are fortunate to be able to have a good relationship with the ladies at the shelter. They work with these animals everyday and I know they will tell me if they dont think the dog I'm looking at will do well with my small children.

Tom, you're an idiot. There's absolutely NO guarantee that a dog from a breeder will have a good temperament. AKC papers only mean that both parents came from the same breed--nothing more, nothing less. "Reputable" breeders are most concerned with a dog who looks good in a show ring, not who has a good temperament. (And disreputable breeders care only about making money.)
I had two dogs from a top breeder who shows at Westminster and they were both so aggressive they had to be muzzled when I took them out for a walk.
By contrast, dogs from shelters and rescue groups are often tested for temperament before being put up for adoption and if a dog has been fostered, the foster family will have a good idea of how the animal behaves with kids, other animals, etc. If you go to Petfinder.com, you'll see that they mark all of the animals with symbols indicating as much. I found my current dog on Petfinder and he was exactly as advertised. Actually, I take that back--he's better!
