There's no need to wait until March 17—now's the time to dig out your funny green hat and celebrate.
That's because Ireland has just become the latest European country to ban fur farms! The ban will take effect in three years and will save thousands of animals from the horrors of fur factory farms.

On fur farms, animals who would roam hundreds of miles in the wild are crammed into wire cages only big enough for the animals to take a few steps in any direction. Hundreds of animals at a time may be kept inside sheds or subjected to stifling heat and numbing cold outdoors. While diseases and injuries are common, most animals on fur farms are denied even basic vet care.
Not surprisingly, the boredom and frustration of captivity drive many animals insane; they spin in circles endlessly, bash themselves against their cage bars, and sometimes gnaw their own tails off.
The ban means that the Emerald Isle will become even greener, too: There will be no more tons of waste produced by fur farms that can pollute waterways and release ammonia into the air.
Ireland's ban on fur farms is a true pot o' gold for animals. Meanwhile, U.S. legislators have yet to enact any federal protections for animals on fur farms—tell them it's time to take a cue from the Irish and put an end to fur-farm cruelty.

ARAN (Ireland's animal rights group) held an awareness and activism week in August. It must have got through to Minister Gormley. This is excellent for animal rights awareness in Ireland

While I am greatful for Ireland stepping up to plate on this, one has to wonder how legislation was passed in the first place!? Consumers? The need to feel fuzzy and warm? We don't need it just like we don't need meat or animals used in entertainment for profit for that matter. We always want what we can't have so when it becomes readily available (supply and demand) we take it to the extreme, we put morals and ethics aside so then that void gets filled up with GREED!! And that is what is destroying this earth, simply put... Greed.

It's to bad the law has to wait three years. That is a long time. The fur farms here in the US used to hide their locations but now they have web sites advertising their wears. I guess they are not as scared of activist opening up cages since congress passed bills that called anyone doing this are now terrorists.

Although I am happy to hear this I am still concerned about the time. Why three years? I mean it's better than no response at all but I still think that those three years can cause the loss of thousands of animals.In reply to James Johnson, who the hell do you think you are and what makes you think you have the right to see or treat innocent animals like trash. I just hope you feel one day the pain all these innocent creatures feel. If you can't feel compassion for an innocent animal like the one in this picture who can expect you to be compassionate about any other human being. So go f... yourself. Great work PETA, God bless you for all your hard work to save animals.

Great news, again it is so distressing that this will still continue for 3 years for the law to take effect...God bless all those innocent souls that will be lost in this time...
