California Bans Tail-Docking of Cows

That sentence in the Central Valley Business Times says it all. California state proved it was full of animal-friendly folk when Prop. 2 passed last year, and now lawmakers in the state have just signed a law that will make the docking of cows' tails illegal starting this January!
During our recent undercover investigation on a Pennsylvania factory farm, our investigator witnessed tail-docking on a number of occasions. The tails of cows were removed by "banding"—which means that circulation to the tail was cut off using an elastic band, which caused the cows' tails to slowly lose blood flow and die. Once the tail is necrotic and lifeless, it is snapped off by a farm worker. Tails act as natural flyswatters for cows, who have no other way to chase off insects or stop them from biting. Once the cows on this farm had their tails removed, they still tried in vain to rid their bodies of flies, who were rampant in the manure-slicked barn.
Tail-docking is just one of the many horrendous abuses inflicted on animals on factory farms and is a practice that even the notoriously hypocritical AVMA opposes.
Cheers to the California legislature for taking this important step.

This is great news although I find it so shocking that in the 21st century we are still treating farm animals this way...Is it any wonder that the world is a mess? I say we are getting what we deserve for abusing and destroying animals and our planet.

THAT IS WRONG PEOPLE WOULDN'T LIKE IT IF SOME PERSON JUST CUT THEIR HAND OFF AND THEN FLIES START EATING U ALIVE AND U CANT SWAT THEM AWAY AND GET EATEN ALIVE.

Thank goodness. It's bad enough that these cows are beaten and maimed. They should atleast have the right to keep flies off their back from chewing into their skin. This should have been banned a long time ago, but I'm still thankful that there will be a change.

This is GREAT and a GOOD step toward stopping animal ABUSE!I'm glad that this is one less abuse to be legal.Abuse toward animals and unborne babies has gone so far out of line and just keeps getting worse,too many people justify this behavior or look the other way,because they feel defeated.ITS TIME TO WAKE UP PEOPLE,because its not going away,ITS GETTING WORSE!Thank God this GUY has put his foot down!!!!!!!!

People who really worry about these situations going on in the world need to concentrate on your own life. The people, like myself, who are farmers have our own way of making a profit (As does everyone) and we all make sure that we do the best we can to make the best profit possible. Hurting the animals we use for slaughter makes zero sense. We make sure they are healthy and fed properly, obviously. The meat served around the country is healthy and certified.

most farmers and ranchers take the best care they can of their animals - hurting them would be like nursery beating their children - they would not be in business long -- what about the Dobermans that get their tails and ears chopped?
