Victory! Hospital Stops Hurting Cats in Training Exercises

Back in June, PETA contacted hospital administrators and urged them to replace the cruel use of cats for intubation training. We wanted them to start using the more effective, humane humanlike simulators that are endorsed by the PALS course's sponsor organization and that are used at nearly every PALS facility in the country. Heartland resisted. But after two months, a USDA complaint from PETA, a letter, a phone call from one of the original developers of the PALS course, and thousands of e-mails from caring PETA supporters, Heartland administrators have had a change of heart.
Switching to manikins is purrfect—cats are spared, and nurses, EMTs, and other emergency caregivers get more accurate and effective training.
What's the holdup, St. Louis Children's Hospital?

I live not ten minutes away from the children's hospital. had no idea they were using cats for training. they will be facing many of my angry homemade flyers!

the name of the blog sounds like "pedophiles".

Bravo, Peta!!
Posted by: Pamela Ernest | September 21, 2009 05:29 PM
This barbaric practice still exists!
Posted by: Moira | September 21, 2009 05:50 PM
Outstanding! I had no idea using cats was the standard practice. Thanks for all the good work :).
Posted by: sasha | September 21, 2009 06:33 PM
what kind of conscious responsible caring medical people does it bring?
My trust in hospital is gone at once!

Plaudits for PETA. The animal abuse reported in these blogs is heartbreaking. The human race is indisputably the most monstrous species that has ever massacred the earth and her creatures.

Cool story, bro.

Seriously?!? the pedophiles err... peta files... please change the blog title. That is terrible. Alternatively, well played internets geniuses.
Posted by: Blech | September 21, 2009 08:31 PM
Yeah, for future reference: Say the name of your blog out loud a few times before putting it up. That is a really unfortunate name.
Posted by: Molly | September 21, 2009 08:35 PM
You DO realize that the name of your web-site looks like: PEDOPHILES right?
Explain to me how this helps the movement? *Hides in shame

The Pedophiles has even made it to failblog. That takes skill.

Please change your blog name to something other than what sounds audibly like "The Pedophiles" :p

ok so to start i am a medic in the military. and i can say yes i have trained on live animals before and i have also trained on many 3/4 million dollar manikins as well. and with saying that yes those manikins are great. but there has been no better training then the training i got using... live tissue. there is just no comparison. specially in my line of work where, while deployed i will literally have someones life in my hands and i want the best possible training there is. ok but don't get me wrong, its very hard training to do at that still. i mean it is a living animal and all.
honestly i think with this case, yes its unfortunate that have to use cats to train on. but think of it this way, if your child was in the hospital and needed to intubated( or so crudely put in the article, jamming a hard plastic tube its windpipe), wouldnt you want someone who has had the absolute best training possible? i know i would.
so in the end i say this is no victory. maybe for the cats it is, but for all the children who will suffer from the consequences of having lesser trained techs, this is definite loss.

HAHA!! The peta files? seriously?
It's funny because it sounds like pedophiles.
You guys Win.

Posted by: Yarmal | September 21, 2009 10:32 PM
Um, I hope others may have said something but the name of your blog is really close to "The pedophiles" in sound.
Say it out loud.
Not making fun just bringing it to your attention.
Posted by: D | September 21, 2009 11:07 PM
Why does your blog name sound like pedophile (PETAfile)?
Posted by: madfoot | September 21, 2009 11:25 PM
Wonderful news! Thank you for stepping up! I just can't believe as human beings what we do to animals. They are not ours for use and exploitation.

"the name of the blog sounds like "pedophiles"."
Yes, to somebody who can't pronounce the letter "t", I imagine it does.

Congratulations to PETA! I have always had cats and they constantly give unconditional love. I think those who shove plastic tubes down the poor cats' throats should have tubes of a much larger size shoved down THEIR throats.

haha you do know your blog is called the PETAFILE = PEDOPHILE right???

Posted by: Noone | September 22, 2009 08:06 AM
an acquaintance of mine is helping to teach some lab class at his university. he mentioned that they had to put some cats to sleep for testing or whatever. he said he didn't want to. but yet he did it anyway. ok? i don't get it. but i think it's kind of pathetic and sad. not to mention but i think he's a vegetarian.

Can you imagine that supposedly educated people would insist on using an outdated, inferior form of health education? This is why Missouri has the reputation it does of being the Backwards state!
But it sounds like someone there actually used their brain, and brought a part of Missouri out of the Dark Ages.
Meanwhile Missouri is the capital of America for allowing puppy mills, dog fighters, weirdos who breed moneys and apes for pets, and other degenerates that worked their way into the legislature.
Time for a BIG change Missouri!

Great news! But there are LOTS of other medical training programs still using animals to train on.

Talk about jumping on the bandwagon..one person says sommat stupid then they all do. it just goes to show your mentality cause ive been on peta for a while now and never once thought that way about the name of the blog, i think you really need to get a job or life or sommat instead of making a joke out of something thats not funny.

Ok, am I missing something or is it the same erm.. "person" (Not the first word that came to mind, believe me) who keeps completely avoiding the main (and incredibly serious) issue by making childish jibes about the name of the blog?
Aside from the fact that making light of something as horrific as paedophilia is disgusting, does he/she or they not have the intelligence to actually comment on the blog topic?
As for the following..
"do you really not have ANYTHING better to do then this? im a full time student and work full time i can think of a billion things id rather do then waste time on stupid fliers."
I'd agree with you (as a fellow full-time student) if this were a trivial subject but it's far from. This is about lives, not just of the animals but of the people that continue to suffer as a result of scientists relying way too heavily on animal experiments. Or are you one of those people who prefers to remain in the dark? Ignorance is bliss after all.
Posted by: Bluebell | September 22, 2009 02:01 PM
To the site owner:
Why are you approving for posting moronic comments from people who seem obsessed with pedophilia and can't speak properly? I don't like censorship, and I don't mind appropriate profanity, or an intelligent opposing viewpoint, but these nothing-to-say mental midgets are just wasting space.

who are the people that keep saying that peta files sounds like "pedophiles" Middle Schoolers?
Posted by: jess | September 22, 2009 05:15 PM
I'll pretend to be a PETA person.
"OMG! You r sooo stupid for saying that PETA Files sounds like pedophiles! THERE ISN'T EVEN A "D" IN PETA!"
Seriously. Laugh it out. It's funny. Don't deflect. All of my co-workers found it funny. Maybe there will be a poll for a new blog name now.
Oh yes, good job with the cats as well.

THANK YOU PETA for helping these poor little kitties! Victory for them is better late than never. Bless you PETA for not giving up.
I LOVE CATS!

FUNNY? what exactly is funny about pedaphiles? whether the name sounds like it or not why does the phrase 'pedaphiles' make people laugh? to me its sick disgusting and not in the least bit funny. someone wrote somewhere in the previous blog 'you pedaphiles keep up the good work' or something like that, children and babies who get abused by these freaks is in no way a laughing or take the piss kind of matter is it? if this blog sounds like it there is no need to make a laughing matter out of it.
Posted by: emma | September 23, 2009 01:11 PM
I agree with Emma.
I'm not so sure about the land kitties however.
I watched a show on the animal planet about the worlds deadliest cats. They went through the top ten and highlighted some of the cats that you would expect to be on there, like the lion, tiger, bobcat, cougar, etc. However, I was shocked to learn that the common house cat is the most deadly cat on the planet. I can't remember the exact amout of birds and mice house cats kill a year, but the number was astonishing. I believe it was in the billions worldwide.
The part that I found to be most interesting is the fact that common house cats will kill even when they are not hungry. Just for sport or pleasure. Whatever you want to call it. They kill and leave without eating the dead animal.
I am curious what are some of your thoughts on this phenomenom. Land kitties are natural born killers.
Posted by: Kurt K | September 23, 2009 04:41 PM
Yeah i agree kurt lol never thought ov it that way. My cat brings home at least 3 mice a week sometimes dead sometimes alive but after i force her to let go they die soon after with shock, also quite a few birds have been left in the garden by her. They are natural born hunters no matter if they're hungry or not, i feed my cat 3 times a day so theres no excuse. But my male cat would freak if he came in contact with a mouse. So yeah you're right in that aspect, but they dont deserve to be treated any differently because they dont realise its wrong (shame but true).

Perhaps PETA should inform the children of St. Louis Children's Hospital of what they're doing. What are they going to say, if children revolt against their cruelty?
Posted by: Jackie | September 24, 2009 08:25 AM
this is great.
Posted by: haley | September 24, 2009 08:51 PM
Not that this will help, but just FYI I suspect the blog title is, in part, PETA poking fun at itself. You see, a common insult to animal acties is to call us PETAphiles (I personally prefer think petards is funnier, but hey....), and PETA seems to be pretty good at the whole tongue in cheek/don't take themselves too seriously thing.
Indeed Kurt, when it comes to domesticated cats the part of her brain that tells her to eat is separate from the part that tells her to hunt, and most if not all will kill small wildlife and not quickly either. The numbers are staggering, and allowing your cat to hunt and kill at leisure is, in the case of many, many millions of protected victims each year, often a violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty. That doesn't mean that cats are bad or inherently cruel animals, but it is one of the myriad reasons it is not right to keep cats outside--besides the dangers to the cat (cars, cruel people and unknown animals, feline immunodeficiency virus, leukemia, FIP, I could go on ad nauseum but I won't) it is simply not fair to your local wildlife to allow cats outdoors. Allowing a cat outdoors is also highly disrespectful to neighbors (I had a redneck woman next door tell me her kitties were wild animals--idiots) whose yards they might use as a litterbox, or whose own animals they might stress, so in my opinion it's just plain not right. I know their are many animal people who think their cats deserve the right to roam outside, and if that's the case it must be done responsibly (i.e. supervised on a leash, with a cat fence in they can't climb out of, etc.), since the rights of you and your animal end when they begin to infringe on another human's or animal's rights, or at least that's my two cents.

ok so i just read your post jakie "Perhaps PETA should inform the children of St. Louis Children's Hospital of what they're doing. What are they going to say, if children revolt against their cruelty?"
and are you a fucking idiot? did you even read the article? or hell even the title of it maybe? becuase if you did, you would see that it obviously says they are stopping the use of cats for training...
GOD i hate stupid people
Posted by: Nick | September 28, 2009 12:47 AM
Nick you may have to eat your own words here, If you read the article properly then you would have read that it is heartland regional medical centre has agreed to stop this but st louis childrens hospital has yet to follow suit, so i think before you call someone stupid maybe you should read whats been writen properly.
Posted by: emma | September 29, 2009 04:42 AM
WTG, PETA!!! good job ... terrible to use them for practicing. why not use those hard core criminals, pedophiles, psychos for those trainings instead of using those innocent defenseless animals.

Dear PETA,
THANK YOU ALL, for what your amazing TEAM does to make the
WORLD A BETTER AND HAPPIER PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO LIVE IN because animal well being is not forgotten. WITHOUT YOUR DEVOTION AND DEDICATION people like me could NOT believe life is as precious
and vauluable.
Sincerely and humanely yours,

Thanks for being some what of a radical animal rights group. Sometimes it is the only way to make point. Many other organizations just don't push there agenda hard enough.

Thank you PETA for putting pressure on Heartland Regional Medical Center and getting them to stop a barbaric, unnecessary and horribly inhumane practice! It is not - I repeat not necessary to train on live beings to receive good medical training- that is a myth. To anyone that thinks differently you are sadly mistaken. Or you just buy into the same rubbish as generations past. Kudos to PETA again. Keep up the good work.
