The agency that oversees the largest animal testing program of all time has just announced new guidelines that mean that the number of animals who could fall victim to toxicity testing during the course of the program has dropped—by 4.5 million!

This news from the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) comes in response to a detailed letter PETA initiated in cooperation with other animal protection groups. That letter was written after we learned from a chemical manufacturer that under the E.U.'s new Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical Substances (REACH) Regulation, a number of duplicative tests were going to be conducted.

PETA, along with PETA Europe, the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments, Eurogroup for Animals, HSI Europe, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, voiced concerns about the likelihood that companies would conduct duplicative animal tests for some types of toxicity when registering their chemicals under REACH. The letter explained how the redundant testing could be avoided.

ECHA was quick to issue a news release and a factsheet instructing chemical companies not to conduct initial toxicity screenings if they are planning to conduct more comprehensive tests during the later stages of REACH. Based on ECHA's own figures, 6,000 chemicals may fall under the relevant information requirements, and because up to 735 animals may be used for the initial toxicity screening for each chemical tested, ECHA's response has the potential to save the lives of 4.5 million animals.

There's still much work to be done, as REACH will still cause massive animal suffering. But you can bet your (vegan) boots that our next step will be to do everything possible to make sure that companies follow ECHA's new guidelines so that as many animals as possible will be spared.

Humans have no right to exploit or harm any innocent animal. We are not God. Animals are our fellow creatures.

Posted by: Brien Comerford | September 17, 2009 08:05 PM

This is fantastic news. Thanks to Peta and the other organisations involved millions of animals will be spared the horrific experiments conducted in laboratories.

Posted by: Bluebell | September 17, 2009 08:10 PM

Even more now that Annie Le is dead. I'm sorry, but she made hundreds if not thousands of rats suffer.

While the media is talking about how she's a victim, PETA should be focusing on her victims. As well as the other animals suffering at the Yale hospital.

I can't believe I'm the only one who when they heard she tested on animals, thought of the animals that were saved before how tragic her death was.

Also how about the concept that the person who allegedly murdered her, worked for years in a facility where they torture animals. We all know that animal abuse soon leads to human abuse or murder.

Now if we can help stop animal's being used at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

OMG!
This is fantastic news.
Obviously all industries that exploit animals are terrible, but in my option Vivisection is the worst of them all.
Thank you PETA for saving millions of aniamls from a life time of fear, pain and loneliness.

Posted by: therese | September 23, 2009 05:27 AM

Wow...

I knew it was only a matter of time before someone would bring Annie Le into an animal rights discussion.

Portraying a heartless and pointless murder as a positive thing is truly disgusting. Anyone that feels this way is far sicker than scientists who at least have the betterment of humanity in mind.

Ironic that the point is made that the murderer's working in a lab where animals were abused contributed to the mindset that allowed him to kill, when in your zealousness, you've actually attempted to justify it.

Sad....

Posted by: Kalama Halamezad | September 23, 2009 05:31 AM

4.5 Million! Jeez! Although animal testing is incredibly wrong and disturbing , this is a milestone! This is only the beginning to what could be the end of toxicity testing!

Posted by: Hannah Holt | September 23, 2009 07:34 AM

wow wat a loser yall are to be using poor little animals. when you can make a fake dummy and us it for the test have you ever thought of that maybe not!! so i hope you will read some of the stuff people put on her because they care about animals!!

Posted by: Mrs. Booth | September 23, 2009 08:56 AM

i'm totally against the use of animals for running tests. We are animals as well...the human species. I believe that if you won't use one race of animals they you shouldnt use any others. ITS NOT RIGHT! Animals have the right, its hard enough for them to survive in the wilderness, let alone them having to try and survive the massive tortures scientists and researchers put them through every day.

Posted by: Courtney | September 23, 2009 11:44 AM

@Jori Rodriguez- It's not 1 rat, it's billions, and it's not just their deaths that are the problem but also the IMMENSE physical and emotional agony they go through their entire miserable lives. Not to mention the fact that nearly all animal experiements are useless and outdated. The data from most experiments even states this in the results- that since humans and rodents are so different biologically, the results from the tests can't be applied to humans. Therefore, they do not actually "save" any human lives like you think.

Posted by: Rachel | September 23, 2009 01:27 PM

Jackie, your demonizing of individuals is misguided. Annie Le had a job, and now someone else will perform that job. Fight the organization and the industry. Don't cheer some woman's death as if it's great news for animals.

Posted by: pomomarx | September 23, 2009 03:47 PM

Sorry, previous post was direct @Mrs. Booth, not Hannah

Posted by: Kalama Halamezad | September 23, 2009 04:47 PM

so there are still got people in this world care about animals instead of themselves.
Thanks to PETA, you've done a great job, bless ya.

Animals need our respect and love, so they are independed on us. Not to abuse and torture them!

Posted by: h. driessen | October 1, 2009 04:16 PM

Such great news. Have tears in my eyes.

Posted by: Ruchi gupta | October 1, 2009 04:59 PM

I UNDERSTAND THAT WE NEED TO FIND THE CURE OF A LOT OF DESEASES ETC, BUT ANIMALS ARE NOT THE BEST OPTION BECAUSE THEIR BODYS' FUCTION IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO OURS SO SCIENTIS ARE ONLY MAKING THOSE ANIMALS SUFFER AND WASTING MONEY THEY SHOULD FIND ANOTHER WAY TO EXPERIMENT!

Posted by: lisett | October 1, 2009 04:59 PM

DON'T EXPERIMENT WITH ANIMAL! THEY HAVE ANOTHER METHABOLISM ANOTHER DNA, WE ARE JUST MAKING THEM SUFFER STOP THAT PLEASE! WE DONATE MONEY TO FIND THE CURE SO STOP WASTING TIME WITH ANIMALS AND FREE THEM!

Posted by: Lisett | October 1, 2009 05:09 PM

Finally! It's high time someone shows compassion for animals, no matter how small they are. They and we were all created by the same Intelligence. Let's hope that more "well educated" people will follow in these steps and show compassion

Posted by: Denise | October 1, 2009 05:17 PM

That is such great news! These animals do not deserve to be a part of any testing. What right do people have over them, they can't speak for themselves. I love mice and rats, they are very friendly and lovely

Posted by: marie p | October 1, 2009 05:36 PM

That's great!!!!

Every form of live is god created, or if you prefer, is part of life's organique function it has every right, for justice and respect. We have no right over any form of life, its about time for our consciousness to realise that we are the keeper of nature and its inhabitants,
We should start acting as grown up and not spoilled brates.
Spoilling and destroying every thing that come crossing our path.We are responsible for all our actions and an action of violence is an act with no excuses, today one has to be a real fool not to be aware and informed in the fact, that the immune system or the genetic function of any animal has nothing to do with the human function in any way. One would have thought it to be common sense, but how ever today its a scientific fact

Posted by: Hess | October 1, 2009 06:32 PM

I am ecstatic over such significant progress! Thank you to PETA, PCRM and any and all organizations working so perseveringly on ending so much inhumane suffering of animals of all species. And
yes, to the earlier comment,
I also pray for an end to the
China fur market as well as the horrific dog and cat meat trade in Korea. In the meantime, bless all who have worked so hard!

Posted by: Patricia Masuda | October 1, 2009 06:45 PM

Congratulations to everyone who loves and supports PETA's cause. We have no right to cause pain and suffering to innocent defenseless animals. I am so happy to hear this news. Thank you PETA, you are god's finest gift to the world.

Posted by: Pam | October 1, 2009 07:42 PM

Annie Le, the murdered victim, I also thought of all
the little animals that she
did experiments on. Why does
no one mention this. I am
sorry she was murdered but remember all the animals that
died at her hand. Yale needs
to be accountable for all their animal testing! PETA needs to address this, and bring them out in the open. I notice how the Police and the newsmedia, has kept it so quiet. Well, We KNOW!!!what
was going on there. What do
u think she was carrying into
the lab, under a blanket of watchful camera eyes?????

This is so wonderful!!! No matter how small each life is precious!
Can we get some attention on the young children hunting and killing alligators and being featured on CNN as some kind of hero???
The lastest one is 5 years old. UNBELIEVABLE!!! I am so disgusted.

I'm absolutely horified at all the pain animal labs have to endure in the name of science. For heavens sake! I'm a pet rat / mice lover and I absolutely ADORE these amazing animals. They are the most lovable pets you can ever imagine to have. Thanks PETA for saving these wonderful critters so much pain!

Posted by: Rina van Coller | October 2, 2009 01:34 AM

Kudos to PETA. The use of animals in medical reserch is outdated and unrealiable! How many drugs that were tested on rats and supposably found "Safe" ended up being harmful, if not deadly, to humans?!?

Posted by: Merry Elliott | October 2, 2009 03:44 AM

Why not use murderers and child abusers to experiment on rather than innocent animals? Always seemed an obvious choice to me! At least they would be contributing to society rather than costing tax payers millions!

Posted by: Georgina Doran | October 2, 2009 04:02 AM

u s e CRIMINALS IN OUR JAILS.
USRE CRIMINALS, THE CHILD ABUSERS, MURDERS, RAPIST, THIEVES IN YOUR LABS. THEY HAVE GIVEN UP THEIR RIGHTS ONCE THEY'VE VIOLATED OUR LAWS. ALL THEY GET IS A SPANKING! MAYBE, JUST MAYBE THEY WILL THINK BEFORE ACTING OUT A VIOLENT ACT. SO MUCH OF OUR TAX DOLLARS $$ IS SPENT ON KEEPING CRIMINALS WARM, CLEAN, SAFE, WELL FEED, ENTERTAINED, ETC. WHATS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE??? WAKE UP TAX PAYING CITIZENS, USE THE SO CALLED CRIMINALS AND NOT OUR LOVING ANIMALS.
ANIMALS ARE GODS CREATURES THAT HAVE DONE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG BUT GIVE US LOVE. YOU CAN'T EVEN TURN ON THE T.V. WITHOUT SEEING ANIMALS ENTERTAINING, LOVING AND PUTTING SMILES ON OUR FACES. WE USE ANIMALS AS SERVE TO THE BLIND, DEAF ETC. MICE IN WALT DISNEY. KEEP SMILING.
SO I REPEAT USE THE CRIMINALS IN OUR JAILS, THEN THEY'LL THINK TWICE BEFORE COMMITING THE CRIME. WHO KNOWS THESE CRIMINALS MAY ATTACKING YOUR CHILDREN AND LOVED ONES SO LETS STOP THE ACT NOW AND NOT BABYING THE OFFENDERS BY PROTECTING THEM AND FLUFFING UP THEIR FEATHER PILLOWS. WAKE UP EVERYONE! WHO'S LAUGHING AT WHO!

First- WAY TO GO PETA!!!!! Thank God for you!!! There is NO REASON for animal testing to be done in this day-in-age!!!!!!

And, second, to the ignorant person who made a comment above called "Alexis": WE DO NOT NEED ANIMAL TESTING!!! DUH!! THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO TEST PRODUCTS THAN ON POOR INNOCENT ANIMALS!! THEY DO NOT HAVE A VOICE- HUMANS DO. GET A CLUE ALEXIS!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Mercedes | October 2, 2009 06:48 PM

Im against animal testing. They should use people on death row in prison instead.

dearest kelly archer, you make as much sense as the animal researchers (no lie can live forver!) saying there people cured polio, fact is. "work on prevention of polio was LONG DELAYED by an erroneous conception of the nature of the human disease based on MISLEADING experimental models of the disease in monkeys" albert sabin, m.d., during a 1984 house subcommittee. (also visit) mrmcmed.org ps, "animal studies are done for LEGAL REASONS and not for scientific reasons. the predictive value of such studies for man is MEANINGLESS" 1964 james gallagher, medical director of lederle laboratories (uk).
