PETA's investigation footage from a filthy Pennsylvania dairy facility that supplies Land O'Lakes continues to receive massive press coverage. All the coverage has prompted the Fortune 250 company to issue an official statement—one that only serves to highlight the profit-driven callousness and lack of concern for animals within the corporation and the dairy industry as a whole.

Jeanne Forbis, the director of communications at Land O'Lakes, said, "[W]hen state-certified inspectors do inspections at dairy farms they are inspecting for milk and equipment sanitation practices, not animal treatment."

Is that supposed to be the "excuse" for why the Land O'Lakes inspector didn't bother to note that cows were living in filth, without bedding or a clean, dry place for shelter? Or that lameness and mastitis were rampant? How about the fact that there were cows who were so debilitated and thin that they looked like skeletons with skin draped over them?

Frankly, the inspector didn't do very well on inspecting for sanitation either. Take a look at the video—animals are virtually swimming in a soup of urine and fecal matter. All Forbis's comment does is raise some serious doubts about the quality of the sanitation inspections that led to the approval of this facility.

Various agencies are now looking into PETA's allegations of abuse, as well as sanitation and food safety violations, against the dairy facility's owners. Abuse of animals in the dairy industry is nothing new, so please consider dropping cholesterol and cruelty-filled dairy products from your diet.

Land O'Lakes is hell on earth for docile bovines. Callous and cruel profiteers that should be vehemently prosecuted for their virulent misdeeds and atrocities against sentient beings.

Perhaps it is a testament to this world's darkness when, in general, we've forgotten the merriment of the animals, and mankind, frolicking in the light. It definately is a sad world when we can't hear the labored sighs of our animal friends. I will work harder to become vegan.

Stop this cruelty NOW! Land O'Lakes is going to get a call from me.

Posted by: Florence | September 30, 2009 11:07 PM

Why would Land-O'Lakes care about the cows' treatment? They just need the cheapest milk, and that's exactly what this factory provides. Ethical treatment to them is a privilage, not a priority in any way, shape or form.

Land-o-lakes - I threw out all of my crap butter and will never, ever buy your products again!!!!! The treatment of all animals had better change and soon... Humans do not own this damn world.

Posted by: carla | October 1, 2009 10:26 AM

I will not buy any products from Land o Lakes or their parent comapnies. I also sent this video to my friends and until we hear news that these places have cleaned up their acts I'll buy butter that acts as butter. How hard is it to see what atrocious living conditions these creatures endure, I am positive the money makers do not live like this. Some Judges that sentence landlords to live in their slum properties for a term to see how it is to live like that, should sentence these heartless people to the same treatment. Let them live a week in those conditions, no baths, feces on the ground dirty water. You get what I mean Might make em change their attitudes maybe not

Land O' Lakes better start inspecting animal treatment and conditions or Land O' Lakes may find itself going bankrupt or in the same position Jack In The Box was in a few years ago. Perhaps they need to be reminded of the devastation that contaminated product can cause.

corporate office phone number 800-328-4155. They got a little call from me today.

Posted by: Tasha | October 1, 2009 03:02 PM

Sadly, this behavior is the norm for the dairy & meat industies. Until people GO VEGAN and stop supporting animal torture and death this will continue to go on. People need to not only boycott Land O'Lakes, but ALL dairy. There are vegan alternatives for dairy!

How stupid can they be? No inspections?

They should insist on cameras because so many of these facilities break the law.

These farmers made fools out of Land O Lakes.

Posted by: Thomas | October 1, 2009 03:26 PM

I think the answer is to not buy dairy of any sort from anywhere. As long as these companies exist to make money off the animals, cruelty and miserable lives for these innocent animals will exist. It is the consumers that are creating the demand.

Totally inhumane and abusive! The corporate office phone number for Land O'Lakes is 1-800-328-9680. You can also write to the CEO:

land o lakes brung tears to my eyes because of their barbaric treatment of cows, now they will never get one dollar from me again until they change their ways.

Posted by: neil sanghavi | October 2, 2009 02:15 AM

Typical of greedy companies not caring for the welfare of the animals they make sooo much money from. Disgusting.

Posted by: Gayle Hyde | October 2, 2009 02:44 AM

I can't believe such thing is ocurring??? Are you kidding me? I will not buy Land O Turture products again!!! I will call both numbers and give them more than just a piece of my mind!!! What a disgrace!

And as for that inspector??? Does he still have a job??? I would love to know his or her name and have it exposed all over to let others know that this idiot does not know the definition of sanitation, abuse, negligence, should I even go on???

Posted by: Myrna | October 2, 2009 02:49 AM

I really have to praise PETA for finding caring people with such strong stomachs and control of their tempers to be able to spend all that time documenting all that horror. I know I could not do that, I’d be to sick and angry to stand in front of all that suffering. Applause to those who have brought such horrors to everyone’s attention, hopefully they will understand that ignorance is not bliss. I have asked all my family and friends who are not even Veg or Vegan to please stop purchasing products from this company.

Posted by: Jillianne | October 2, 2009 08:01 AM

I'll start looking at the labels and Land O' Lakes can dry up. NO MORE OF THEIR PRODUCTS!

Posted by: Steve N Lunsford | October 2, 2009 09:08 AM

this is the most stupid thing I've heard in my life? how can they use this excuse to treat cows like that? aren't you shame of yourselves? the best way to combat this is don't buy any Land o Lakes products!

Posted by: Artur | October 2, 2009 10:00 AM

I went to their website and emailed them. SOOO much faster. I got a standard response back... " We don't own our farms".. " We have the strictest sanitation Standard".. " We are very concerned with animal mistreatment".. blah blah blah. In other words they are just waiting for this to blow over and they're trying to minimize the effect on their bottom line. So I'm going to do the same and help my bottom line by not spending my money on their products.

I reported a farm for this exact problem - it has a land o lakes sign out front and the farm itself is gorgeous from the outside - the OUTSIDE! It is appalling what is on the inside! But, it looks as though peta didn't turn thier heads when I reported them - thanks peta - I couldn't sleep at nites cause of what I knew - now it's in the open!
