That looks...disgusting. Both of 'em. I thought the first one was a crime scene.

Bullfighting is such a barbaric "sport". It's about weak and pathetic individuals terrorising and torturing animals purely for the thrill of it.

I have no sympathy for those idiotic people who are injured during bull runs or fights.

At least some of the more compassionate Spanish towns have banned bullfighting. Hopefully the rest will join them (in the 21st century).

It's better but it's not good, it is a waste. People have such stupid ways to entertain themselves.

Posted by: sanjuro | August 28, 2009 03:24 PM

Bullfighting belongs in the history books like witch hunts.

Posted by: Pamela Ernest | August 28, 2009 05:20 PM

People are starving and these idiots are hurling tomatoes at each other?

Sheesh! And doesn't Spain have law protecting animals from abuse? I can't imagine anybody treating their dogs or cats in the manner bulls are treated.

Although the Tomatina festival is a lot better that the Running of the Bulls, it's still wasting food that can easily go to starving children and homeless people.

Posted by: Andrea | August 28, 2009 06:51 PM

This is so stupid and serves NO purpose at all. How long is it going to take for people to see this and understand that it has to stop. Why are animal rights and cruelty laws not more strict.

Can anybody name one famous vegetarian from Spain. I doubt it ! In Europe, the British are the most animal friendly and vegetarian.

Posted by: Brien Comerford | August 28, 2009 08:49 PM

Absolutely ridiculous that this is still happening in this day and age.

Posted by: Trey Dupree | August 28, 2009 10:26 PM

@sanjuro
The festival is in honor of the town's patron saints St. Louis Bertrand.

So learn to research stuff on wikipedia before making yourself seem like an idiot dude.

these modern time barbarians are a shame for the whole history!

Posted by: Bharata | August 29, 2009 02:18 PM

Bullfighting belongs to the dark and sad history of our planet!! How can anyone call this a sport or otherwise entertaiment, I sincerly hope people will wake up to this shamefull practise and stop paying money to see it!!!

I ALWAYS root for the bull whether it is in the running of the "fools" or in a bullfight. I say "ole!" to the bulls to gore someone. The more the better!

@ Brien Comerford

Montserrat Caballé is a Spanish Opera Singer. She is vegetarian.

Posted by: Jen | August 30, 2009 09:49 PM

Bullfighting is cruel and barbaric - animals have rights - get out there and fight and educate to liberate.

Posted by: John Carmody | August 31, 2009 05:40 PM

Dear Jen:

For years I have been periodically researching Ms.Caball'e alleged vegetarianism. She is not and I wish she was because she's an amazing vocalist and hefty. I hope you're right but a few years ago I was e-mailed from one of her websites with the NO answer.

Spain is at least putting their passion for animal cruelty on public display. Here in the U.S. our children think a hamburger is just a fun meal with no harm to it and never know the pain and suffering it represents. Personally I'd like to see them slaughtering the cows right at the front door of where they are served.

Hey to all You saying the tomatoe party is a waste: get a sense of humor.

Posted by: Joanna | September 1, 2009 04:25 PM

Joanna, there are much better uses for THAT many tomatoes than sliding around in them, like feeding starving people in Africa.

Posted by: Johnny | September 1, 2009 11:02 PM

No HEART what so EVER!!
I do wonder though.. if it was human blood would they still be doing that??
DISGUSTING people.

Posted by: natalie | September 3, 2009 02:38 PM

Considering there would be enough wheat in the world to bring bread down to a hidiously cheap price if they didn't deliberately destroy the stuff when its in excessI say let the Spanish have their tomato festival.
