Why not list five or ten? In honor of World Breastfeeding Week, we're doing everything in pairs. So, come take a walk down Mammary Lane as we revisit some of our most titillating pro–breast milk moments from the past couple of years:

If it was good enough for Jesus

  1. "If It Was Good Enough for Jesus" billboard. Mother's milk is the best thing for every baby. 'Nuff said.

  2. While we're on the subject of being Religulous, WWBMD (What would Bill Maher do) if we asked him to do a funny ad for our "Dump Dairy" campaign? Here's the answer.

  3. Ben and Jerry's breast milk ice cream. We wrote to this ice cream icon asking it to ditch the dairy products and use breast milk instead. While our dream of having flavors called "Breast Milk Brittle" and "Baby Mama Milk Shake" never came to fruition, we did manage to get people thinking about how bad cow's milk is for their health.

  4. "Milk Gone Wild" video. It was banned from the Super Bowl, but it lives on years later in the viral world of YouTube. This sassy spoof shows how udderly gross and wrong it is to exploit underage heifers.

About the Ben and Jerry's thing. I never was able to understand how some people thought it would be "gross" to drink breastmilk. To me, drinking the milk of an entirely different species is worse.

LOL! This is one of your funniest posts in a long time. Milk is so gross. I will never understand how people think that drinking the milk of another animal is normal!!

Soymik is cool and not cruel and hence it rules. On a related post the woman holding the drowned rabbits is an evil, maniacal and wretched reprobate.

Cow's Milk:

1. Tastes wretched. My mother forced it down my throat when I was a kid and I could not stand it unless it was so cold it was almost frozen. As soon as I became an independent adult I stopped drinking it.

2. Gives me an allergic reaction. My lips and throat itch and I immediately become congested when I consume milk, ice cream or cheese.

Soy Milk:

1. Tastes great, especially the chocolate flavor. I use it mostly on cereal and I use the vanilla flavor to mix in mashed potatoes.

2. Does not give me an allergic reaction of any kind.

"If It Was Good Enough for Jesus"?

If Mary was a virgin, she wouldn't be able to give milk!

Posted by: Chris Bantli | August 5, 2009 01:47 PM

I tried to get used to soy milk but just never could stand the taste. Since I don't do dairy I experimented with all he various non dairy drinks. Almond, Hazelnut, Hemp, etc until I came upon whole grain rice milk. This works for me just fine. Also I found for baking that fruit juice makes an nice replacement. Mango juice pancakes...now your talking.

Some things should remain sacred and that includes the Blessed Mother and Jesus. I am a vegan PETA member but that doesn't mean I agree with everything PETA does or says.

Actually, Chris, Mary gave birth, therefore, she was lactating. In fact, women who have never given birth can breastfeed. Plenty of women who adopt are able to nurse their babies. You should do a little research on the subject... or at least talk to someone who has actually given birth (I'm assuming you have not).

PETA has dreams of ice cream flavors like "Breast Milk Brittle" and "Baby Mama Milk Shake?" That is uh...(creepy)...nice. Either way, I'm lactose intolerant. So milk is no issue for me. But having Jesus in an ad against milk seems...(sacrilegious)...a bit much.

While cow's milk is not necessary for adults, I do feel compelled to mention that anything other than breast milk or formula is NOT enough nutrition for babies under 1 year, and soy or other rice or nut milks are NOT ok for babies and toddlers over 1 year. Babies need either breastmilk, formula, or over age 1 COWS MILK. A baby died of starvation recently after it's stupid parents fed it soy milk- umm, if you're vegan why not breastfeed?? Just to clarify. Thanks

While cow milk is not acceptable, there has to be a middle ground. What's so wrong with rice, soy, almond, and even hemp milks? I'll admit, not all can have it- soy milk makes my throat close up- but seriously, there can't be enough milk to supply the world from human mothers, for it is extremely painful to harvest it- AND YES I KNOW IT'S WORSE TO HARVEST IT FROM COWS- so why not just not eat any animal-based products including human-based products?

Soy milk is disgusting. Over consuming soy slows down your thyroid.

How can a vegan or vegetarian mother breastfeed - her milk would not be of high quality nutritionally - particularly as lacking in healthful animal fats.

Posted by: Sue | August 6, 2009 04:08 AM

I would have loved to have brest fed my kids but they where all premature and my youngest had reflux so bad that he could not stomach breast milk....I agree breast is best...just wish there where some better none dairy formulars fo people who CAN'T rather than WON'T breast feed :(

brilliant!

Love the Milk Gone Wild video, how is that banned from Superbowl yet Porn stars can have ads? Is goat milk safe for humans? I agree about soy vs anyone with thyroid conditions and on medication. Many green foods like cabbage are bad for those with this condition also.

Sue,

I find soy milk delicious, and I certainly agree that mothers' breast milk is absolutely the best for an infant.

You asked, "How can a vegan or vegetarian mother breastfeed - her milk would not be of high quality nutritionally."

Answer: "It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes."

I do have a few questions for you:

1) What constitutes the over-consumption of soy?

2) What's healthful about animal fats?

Posted by: Mike Quinoa | August 6, 2009 08:33 PM

Vegetarians can breastfeed. So can vegans. In fact, MEN can breastfeed, and if you think I am kidding, try youtube, :-o at least I think that's where I'd seen it.

Posted by: Toni | August 6, 2009 11:39 PM

Well, I think driking cow's milk is a bad, nasty, dirty, habit. But really think about it would you drink milk from a (human) strangers breast? You would not even know what kind of illnesses or diseases they may have. I think soybean milk and/or rice milk will do fine for me.

Rev. Chong,
Soybean bean and/or rice "milk", is not really milk now is it.

Posted by: Kurt K | August 7, 2009 12:10 PM

Kurt,

According to Merriam-Webster it could be:

2 : a liquid resembling milk in appearance: as a : the latex of a plant b : the juice of a coconut composed of liquid endosperm c : the contents of an unripe kernel of grain

Posted by: Mike Quinoa | August 7, 2009 01:20 PM

Ok. While I can see how you do not want the mass milking factories for cows, it is actually unethical to not milk a cow. There utters swell and it makes them very uncomfortable.
