Kyra Sedgwick

Doggone it, I knew there was a reason why I love Kyra Sedgwick. Oh, sure, she's an outspoken dog rescuer and an amazing actor, and she's married to hunky Sexiest Vegetarian Alive contender Kevin Bacon. But what really sent her into the hero stratosphere was this letter she sent to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg today asking him to improve the living conditions for the elephants who are being forced to perform by Ringling in Coney Island this summer and requesting that he forbid Ringling from ever returning to Coney Island.

She's not asking for much, just little creature comforts like not being chained up for hours on end and not being whipped in the face or jabbed by bullhooks. Doesn't seem like a lot to ask, does it? Read Kyra's letter for yourself and see if you agree.

well done kyra i hope it does some good but maybe next step write to government to urge them to remove the elephants and tigers from ringling altogether thats the only sure way this cruelty will end.

aaahhhhh!!!

The power of celebrity.

Everyone knows Kyra Sedgwick and her husband Kevin Bacon are a high profile couple of New York City, so this letter should be taken to heart and the suggestions implemented immediately. I certainly hope so.

Who could resist the charms of such a darling and kind-hearted lady?

Mayor Bloomburg; the ball is in your court.

Thank you, Kyra for taking the steps to help these poor creatures. Have you ever considered using that great celebrity of yours and going to Congress? Please think about it. Us peons cannot do what you can. We appreciate what you have done!

Yay Kyra!! Thank you sooo much for speaking up for our animals that we're supposed to care for! Those elephants deserve a much better life! God bless you, Cindy

Thank you so much for taking action on helping these poor animals. I know there are many other celebrities who also speak out to help animals, but I wish even more would follow your lead and do all that they can to help out. Again, many thanks and God bless you.

OMG! What a beautiful and kind actor! Recently the Closer had that touching episode where her character Brenda has to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to Kitty, her cat who was suffering from kidney failure, and now Kyra's raising awareness about the suffering of elephants in circuses?!

The Closer has had some great animal-friendly stories! From the vegetarian M.E, to the episode about that juvenile psychopath who tortured animals, but was murdered before he could go on to kill people, I look forward to watching every Monday with my cat purring on my lap!! I'm so happy to read about Kyra's real-world compassion! Thank you for speaking up for elephants!

I love your show Closer & the part you play Now I have so much respect for you Way To Go Kyra (Brenda)

Keep fighting Ringling Kyra !
Circus's are cruel !!!

Posted by: Amy S | August 6, 2009 08:09 PM

Thank you Michael Bloomberg, Kevin Bacon, and Kyra Sedgwick...
Do you know how to hurt Ringling Bros. the best way anyone knows how? Do NOT support them by going to the circus they run, or to Coney Island until the use of animals is done. It has already be proven that the circus is very popular as well without animals. We all love animals, but not to the suffering extent they have to go through. When animal lovers find out the truth, they will stop going to these outrageous shows that have "behind the scene abuse for elephants, bears, and lions." It's a horrible life for all of these creatures. They are NOT happy there.

Posted by: Radelle | August 6, 2009 08:14 PM

Beautiful! In the end, that's what having a "voice" is all about. I love the specific requests for the animals well being , as opposed to general "complaints" about the conditions. Thank you from animal lovers/rights believers everywhere. xo

thak you i wish every one was like you and iam right behind you i have not gone to a circus in years because of what i have heard and i am a vivid dog rescuer have been for 20 years.

Thank you for that..those babies deserve a break..I love elephants!!

Posted by: kerri corrigan | August 6, 2009 09:59 PM

Thank you Kyra for being envolved with PETA and writing your strong and thoughtful letter to the Mayor of Coney Island on behalf of these elephants who need our help. I hope that all of Ringlings animals are taken from them. Perhaps in time, the U.S. will outlaw circus performances from using animals at all as several other countries have already done.Thank you again Kyra. Audrey Pattison, Escondido, CA

WTG KYRA, I love yah for making a stand against cruelty to the elephants. I was horrified while watching that tape that was aired on Cnn/Nancy Grace show/ But Nancy Grace was not there that night they aired it, she had a fill in, but I could not stop balling my eyes out it really made me so sick to my stomache that no one could put a voice in for the sweet loving elephants, I have 4 children and back in the 1986 all the way to 1995, after the bitrh of the of all my kids, Ringling Brother"s semt me free tickets with my my babies names typed in to the tickets to be able to go to the fair every year for their birthdays, I have never taken my kids to the circus because I know how bad they treat these loving animals, and I hope everyone out there that seen that tape will take a stand and I want the ringling Brother"s circus put out of bussiness, sorry no second chances here for them they have been cruel to the animals since the time I was a child and I swore when I had kids I would never take them to any circus acts or fairs that have animals in them,to this day my kids would go on zoo trips with the class when they were young and I had only taken my kids 2 times to the zoo because I could not stand to see animals that should be free in the wild behind bars, glass windows, and so on. Please Kyra another sad posting about 2 empolyees posted a picture on facebook about drowning 2 rabbits at a petland shop store in Ohio, one girl drowned the rabbits and was laughing while the manager of the store took the picture and they posted it on facebook! I am still crying about the horriffic picture and my 13 year old daughter just posted it to all her pals to tell them to make a stand against cruelty to all living animals! Please Kyra we have to make a voice to all the defenceless animals that cannot speak! I love your show Kyra and I still think you should be on the cover of People"s magazine most Beautiful woman. Thanks Kyra I hope you really get to reading this I am so very upset about the elephants and it is still instilled in my brain and God I wish I could just forget about it but I cannot! The dead rabbits is even sicker I am extemely sick to my stomache as this was sent to me my Peta, which I love! God Bless to you and your family and thanks for making a stand it is alot nicer than what I owuld like to have done with the Ringling Brother"s Circus. Ps. I still have the engraved tickts from Ringling brother"s Company in 4 of the baby books I started from the day they were born and Geesh I for sure am going to get rid of them I want nothing to do with people that beat and hurt animals to keep them in line! Please maybe we should turn the bullhooks on the employees of the Ringling Brother"s to see how it feels on thier body! I am so appalled by thier actions on the animals! Thanks for listening and lets raise our Voices a little louder! Love Laura Sapp Ps Kyra is it possible to do a show about this on your program? Mabye incorporate the actions against a traveling carnival show, to maybe get the message across. We blame the elephants that run wild during the carnivals to get away and I have seen them shoot the elephants till they are dead and now I know why these poor animals run away while they can seeing that they are shackled most of the lifetime they are in these circus acts, and beaten all the time! Thanks for letting me vent Kyra and Thank you for reading and listening to this!God Bless Laura

Go Kyra! You're such an inspiriation to all! Hopefully Mayor Bloomberg will do as she asks!

Posted by: Matt Greenwood [TypeKey Profile Page] | August 7, 2009 10:17 AM

Thank you Kyra!
Perhaps one day others will finally open their eyes to the fact that Elephants are intelligent self-aware creatures! Any species whom can grieve for and visit the bones of their deceased cannot be a non-intelligent species, plus the fact that they can remember the location of a specific water hole decades later should give evidence to their incredible minds!

you rock Kyra!! i love the elephants too!! it helps when celebrities use their influence with any thing like this!! thanks Kyra!

Thank you Kyra :)
I have not stopped thinking about this story since I first came across it. I feel so sad for them and wish there was something more I could do...EVERY DAY. I have been happy and somewhat relieved to see the response it has been getting. I can only hope that one day... all of "Ringling's" animals will be released from their suffering one day very soon!... and taken to sanctuaries...to be in the hands of people who truly care about animals. Thanks again.
Signed,
Kristy

It is about time that these very intelligent and social creatures are treated with the dignity and not here to be used by humans. We should give them space to live and leave them to live their lives which are just as important as ours. Thanks to people like Kyra who are high profile it will raise the awareness.

Im glad that someone is taking a stand. Its better than nothing & overall I am filled with joy to see so many compassionate people about this issue. However this is not enough. These animals are suffering. We should send letters to the gov. & shows and be heard this is not right and we should let others now what is going on ! I definitely am doing everything I can in my behalf !!

Posted by: roxi | August 9, 2009 10:35 PM

Thank you for speaking out for the animals. We love you, Kyra!

Posted by: roxanen | August 11, 2009 08:03 AM

Kyra is awesome!!!!

Posted by: Laura | August 11, 2009 04:18 PM

I have posted the PETA article on my facebook page and hope that others will do the same. It is wonderful when a celebrity is involved because it really grabs some attention. But all of you who have commented on Kyra Sedgwick's letter to the Mayor of NY, Michael Bloomberg, do your part too. Boycott places that sell the tickets, like Pizza Hut, and let them know why. Make your voice known also. Let's all do what we can & not just give out kudos to those who care enough to do their part. And, thanks, Kyra.

Posted by: Dawn | August 11, 2009 11:31 PM

Thank you Kyra!!! Keep it up.

Posted by: Michelle | August 12, 2009 09:29 PM

I never watched the show "Closers" before, but I will now, just to show support for Ms. Sedgwick. I appreciate her efforts.

Thank you kyra you make a hell of a diffrence thank you

Posted by: yeniffer ramos | August 13, 2009 04:00 AM

What was so awesome about this letter is that she was so well-informed about this issue.

Beautiful, brilliant, and compassion for animals - it's no wonder everyone loves her.

Thank you Kyra, for speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves and using your celebrity so eloquently.

Posted by: jenn | August 13, 2009 04:28 PM

Thank you Kyra,

Can you please have some of your celeb friends do the same so we can put heat on the Mayor? I trust he'll do the right thing, but it never hurts to send in more letters. Everyone reading....that means you too!

Thank you Kyra. I am shocked with all the things I've read about Ringling Brothers in the past days. No one has the right to treat animals the way they do. Thank you for making a difference. You are awesome !!! What else can we do to stop this cruelty???

Posted by: Angie | August 16, 2009 06:39 PM

Way to go Kyra & anyone else who stands for circus cruelty.
I have in the past toured with Ringling Bros. B & B. The mighty King Tusk tour & Farewell to Gunther. I had always thought Gunther was treating his animals "fairly" as business standards go. I have not witnessed personally any beatings of elephants or the horses. He didn't whip the tigers either. But when he was replaced in the ring, (I wasn't touring), the tigers did appear lethargic or drugged up.
Believe me when I say this though, the circus business doesn't treat any living thing with dignity. Workers aren't paid a respectable wage, nor given good quarters, just like the animals. The spectator pays high prices for a constant interupted show of hustle of vendors throughout the performance.
All in all, Kennith Feld Productions Combined Shows gives the consumer, worker's, and animals a very high dis reguard for life. Definately one producer who needs boycotting and further reports filed.
