Drowned rabbits

This photo was taken in the back room of a Petland store in Akron, Ohio, and posted on Facebook by Elizabeth Carlisle, who can be seen grinning as she holds two dead, soaking-wet rabbits by the scruff of the neck—rabbits she just drowned while on Petland's time clock. On Carlisle's Facebook page, she confirmed a friend's guess that she had drowned these two rabbits and wrote, "[T]he manager took the pic for me. [S]he reminded me that there were people outside as [I] was swearing at them to just hurry up and die but then she was so kind as to take this picture."

These horrific deaths followed what was apparently an equally horrifying life for these rabbits. Other comments Carlisle posted made it clear that the rabbits were drowned after sustaining agonizing injuries when they were allowed to "attack and eat each other." The rabbits suffered from "deep wounds all over," "an eye missing," what Petland staff "suspected was a broken jaw," and paralysis from the waist down—injuries that would not have occurred had these animals been provided with proper care and supervision.

Undercover investigations have revealed time and time again that companies that breed and sell animals are concerned about profits, not animals' well-being. We are urging Petland to think long and hard about what this incident makes clear: The company has no business selling any animals.

To prevent future incidents like this one, please, never buy from pet stores and urge Petland at the very least to stop selling rabbits.

Click here to take action against Petland.

Posted by: Mary Ellen Skinner | August 4, 2009 05:05 PM

This story is so disturbing. That woman and her manager should be charged. How could anyone be so cruel to defenseless animals?

Posted by: Courtney | August 4, 2009 05:05 PM

I cannot believe someone would do something like that nad SMILE for a photo. What sick, twisted person.
Petland needs to shape up now, and that chick needs to be fired and get charged with animal cruelty.

This is DEPLORABLE!

PETLAND needs to not sell animals anymore !!!

Posted by: raphaella | August 4, 2009 05:12 PM

How could you let this happen? A manager you employ encouraged this and documented it for fun.

Wow.

this is disgusting.

Posted by: danieljack | August 4, 2009 05:13 PM

This is so f*** up! I love rabbits, they are such aweet, loving and gentle animals! Seriously, how can you just take the life of such a wonderful animal! It's like drowning a baby...

Posted by: Briana | August 4, 2009 05:14 PM

This is horrific and criminal charges of animal cruelty should be brought against this person and the manager.

Posted by: Laura | August 4, 2009 05:15 PM

what a scumbag.

Posted by: jamie | August 4, 2009 05:19 PM

This is appalling. Those rabbits died a horrible death and now your making light of it. Shame on you. You should be arrested for animal cruelty. I will NEVER shop at Petland again and I will tell EVERYONE i know to do the same.

Posted by: sandi | August 4, 2009 05:19 PM

Disgusting. I will encourage all friends and family not to shop at Petland.

Posted by: Melody Paris | August 4, 2009 05:19 PM

She's gonig to pay for this right?

Posted by: Elena | August 4, 2009 05:20 PM

I think that both Elizabeth Carlisle and the manager that took the photo should be fired and arrested on animal cruelty charges. Even if they are not convicted, maybe having an arrest record would prevent them from being hired at any other business that deals with animals. Maybe if the police investigate Petland further, they might find more employees that practice the same cruelty.

Posted by: Christina Tracy | August 4, 2009 05:21 PM

absolutely disgusting. this women (if you want to call her that) should be ashamed of herself.

Posted by: Katelyn | August 4, 2009 05:22 PM

I hope that Akron is conducting an animal cruelty investigation on this store and also the woman who was responsible for doing this. Petland states that they have a vet that comes in weekly to care for animals. Why couldn't the vet put the animals down if Petland didn't want them. This also qualifies in the same sector as dog fighting if the employees let the animals fight to the death. I can't believe someone this demented is allowed to work with the animals that the store states "all employees love." What Bullshit! She needs jail time and the store needs to be shut down!!!

Posted by: Cloudette Heichel | August 4, 2009 05:23 PM

Where I live we have a special place for people like her...it's called JAIL

Posted by: Mary Ann Martorana | August 4, 2009 05:24 PM

Posted by: Chantelle | August 4, 2009 05:25 PM

What will happen to this Elizabeth Carlisle? Any cruelty charges pending?

Posted by: Gabrielle | August 4, 2009 05:26 PM

Who is this person? I can't believe she can even do this, worst, be happy about.
My god!

That is one horrible woman.

You are one sick girl Elizabeth Carlisle. But let me tell you something, Karma is a bitch!

Posted by: Arzu Laypan | August 4, 2009 05:29 PM

I called Pat Land, they said she was terminated. Bad Karma like this, evil karma comes back to haunt people. Im so sad....

Posted by: Shari merkle | August 4, 2009 05:29 PM

This is so sick. She should be banned from ever owning or working with living creatures. I do not shop at Petland and it seems I will not be going there anytime soon.
Who is the manager?
I live in Akron, OH

Posted by: Rachel | August 4, 2009 05:31 PM

Will this crazy individual who was caught on camera grinning after killing innocent animals (clearly shows she's not mentally healthy) be arrested for this crime? Murder and animal cruelty are both criminal.I want charges brought against her. The store chain should also be involved since she was on their property and on the clock.

Posted by: Jennifer Larkins | August 4, 2009 05:32 PM

Dear Elizabeth Carlisle and Petland repreesentatives-

I am a Neo-pagan living in Europe and am absolutly revolted. Where I am from the selling of animals is seen as the last legal form of slavary. Take the hint. Go to hell

Posted by: candace | August 4, 2009 05:34 PM

I would like to request that follow up info be posted about measures that are being taken to prosecute the two employees here, as well as the steps being taken to heavily fine and possibly shut this company down altogther. What are the options here? Where does the law apply here, what can realistically be done and to what extent? Education is the key to fighting and shutting down these miserable places that care only about their financial gain at the expense of the sweet "pets" they pretend to care about.

Posted by: Erika Rodgers | August 4, 2009 05:37 PM

someone should take you to court like Micheal Vick, your commiting animal curlity, your staff have posted proof all over the web!! you should be ashaimed of your selfs!!

Posted by: la shanda Esposito | August 4, 2009 05:37 PM

Posted by: Ashley Forrest | August 4, 2009 05:37 PM

This is so disgusting and upsetting... How could someone actually do such a thing and then have no remorse at all and have a photo taken smiling. May she rot in hell.

This poor excuse for a human being and her manager need to be arrested. Our Gov't needs more serious penalties to be given to monsters like this. Not a slap on the hand. This makes me sick. I would be highly concerned of any other animals that are in her care or that of Petland's

Posted by: karla Dutt | August 4, 2009 05:48 PM

I workedf at PETLAND in calgary Canada an i saw animal abuse, the people who abused the poor parrots, puppies etc were not even fired,it was the most horrible experienced i had in my life.

Posted by: mj | August 4, 2009 05:50 PM

Wow!! All Petlands should be shut down! To allow this sort of sick and twisted thing to happen to these animals is just disgusting! You should never be allowed to sell any animals ever! I hope the woman and the manager in this photo spend the rest of their sick lives in jail. I will never, ever shop for anything at Petland or any other pet store for that matter. You are all just in it for profit and have not one ounce of care for these animals. You buy dogs from puppy mills. All pet stores should be shut down.

Posted by: Daniella Shaw | August 4, 2009 05:51 PM

I am sickened and saddened by this senseless act. I hope that the manager and this employee are charged for their crime and made to seek counseling, which they obviously both need.

Posted by: Barbara M | August 4, 2009 05:54 PM

Elizabeth Carlisle is a clearly psychotic. As a psychologist, I would urge the authorities to press charges against her and/or place her in an a psychiatric ward for evaluation of psychosis or sociopathy.

Second, I have reported Petland to the Humane Society, animal control, and even the police. They have sickly, emaciated animals that are walking with limps. Clearly, they are abused and neglected. It is a sick organization and they have connections with animal control and government organizations. They are corrupt and we need reform at the federal level, just like Obama promised before he became President.

Posted by: NS | August 4, 2009 05:57 PM

This is absolutly disguisting and cruel. This poor excuse for a human being deserves to be thrown in jail

Posted by: Cheryl | August 4, 2009 05:58 PM

Posted by: Rene | August 4, 2009 06:04 PM

Well once again humans never stop amazing me how cruel we are. Elizabeth Carlisle you made the biggest mistake by posting this pic. You are going to be the most hated person for a long time. You disgust me more than words can say. I wish you a long miserable life for doing this.

An ugly women...inside & out !!!

Posted by: susan morris | August 4, 2009 06:07 PM

She´s mentally disturbed: all psico serial killers begin with animals. She shouldn't be allowed to have children. This is not only an animal matter - we are looking at a MONSTER.The store must be closed and the owner charged for animal abuse-he couldn't turn a store into a slaughter, could he? Maybe, one day, they`ll taste their own remedy...

Posted by: Hope | August 4, 2009 06:08 PM

Sick, how anyone could stand there and smile is beyond me? There's a special place reserved in hell for people who torture the innocent. Hope you burn Elizabeth...

Posted by: M Mac | August 4, 2009 06:13 PM

this is so shocking...that someone can kill another living being and have such a smile on their face is frightening.

Posted by: rachel | August 4, 2009 06:13 PM

I just spoke on the telephone with the manager of this Petland. She advised me that the employee has been fired and that the Akron Humane Society has investigated. I've left a message with the Humane Society to speak to the investigating agent. I don't know what happens in all Petland stores, but I sure as hell think this person is due a hell of a lot more than being fired. She belongs in jail! Don't forget the specific while you are out rampaging against the general! PETA - you should be spending as much time making sure this person goes to JAIL as you are sending out alerts re US Petland stores. JMO

Posted by: Charlie2002 | August 4, 2009 06:13 PM

That was just rude!

Posted by: Jasmine | August 4, 2009 06:14 PM

People who do these awful things to animals are sick and dangerous. This woman and her manager need to not work near animals or children! They need to be in jail!

Posted by: jen House | August 4, 2009 06:19 PM

This store should be charged. THis girl should be fired and charged... I will be so upset if nothing happends to her and nothing becomes of this!

Posted by: Jamie Nohejl | August 4, 2009 06:22 PM

I can stand this kind of situations, and with all due respect, I think that stupid b**ch should get fired and banned, people like her shouldn't have jobs related with animals, any kind of jobs in fact, she should be in jail, and the manager aswell, he/she is as sick as the worthless piece of meat who's holding and smiling at the porr dead rabbits.

Two little rabbits, my herat is with you know...

Posted by: Daniela | August 4, 2009 06:22 PM

I got a black rabbit from this same petland. My mom took it back the next day.. Then the next week they had 3 new rabbits and no other one..Now I know

Posted by: Erin | August 4, 2009 06:24 PM

This is such a tragedy! And how sick is this demented bitch! GrRrrrrr she better watch herself...now that we know what she looks like! Animals have no chance especially when there are so many fkd up people in this world! You fkn mother pucker!!!

Posted by: Enza | August 4, 2009 06:24 PM

Someone should report this picture to the appropriate governmental agency for animal cruelty. People need to be held accountable for their actions in hopes to prevent any future occurances!

Posted by: ec | August 4, 2009 06:25 PM

I don't know what our world is coming to?
No one seems to care for living creatures anymore.

If she could do this to poor innocent rabbits,I would hope to God,she has no children,

My guess is that there will be no charges of cruelty, laid against this beast of a woman & her manager.

Posted by: peggy | August 4, 2009 06:27 PM

Absolutely Disgusting!

Posted by: beth | August 4, 2009 06:30 PM

I wish I knew where the pair of cruel b**ches lived. Petland should be prosecuted and the smiling sicko and photographer receive the worst.

Posted by: kate | August 4, 2009 06:30 PM

this is so horrible

Posted by: Kim | August 4, 2009 06:30 PM

Here's a future child abuser or murderer!!! She's smiling like she just slain a dragon... Poor lil bunnies... :((

Posted by: Joey L | August 4, 2009 06:33 PM

ummm....this does seem awful. But is anyone questioning these facts? It seems quite unlikely to me that the rabbits were "allowed to attack and eat each other". Rabbits aren't cannibalistic....and they aren't even meat eaters....something in this story is off.

Posted by: samantha Niclas | August 4, 2009 06:35 PM

Why is everyone saying "someone should call the authorities," "someone should do this and that, etc"... why can't YOU be the one who acts!!??

WE should ALL be calling the Animal Protection services in Akron, Ohio in an attempt to get this bitch what she deserves!

Ohio SPCA:

Ohio SPCA
P.O. BOX 546
GROVE CITY, OHIO 43123
*(740) 420-2984*

My message to the SPCA:
"I am appalled to receive news of Elizabeth Carlisle, a former Petland employee from Akron, Ohio, drowning domestic rabbits (who had been previously subjected to abuse) while on store hours. The grim photos of her holding two dead, wet rabbits by the scruffs of their necks while smiling have been made public for all to see. Currently there is a petition in circulation which is attempting to persuade Petland to cease the ‘sales’ of all rabbits, and while I wholeheartedly agree on the matter I believe harsher measures should be taken against Elizabeth Carlisle as well as her manager who encouraged the act, as well as took the photos afterwards. This issue enraged me as I have been keeping up to date on the many animal-cruelty deeds which routinely occur in US pet-stores. I being a Canadian citizen feel helpless on the matter, and sincerely hope that you, the authorities, will serve due justice."

Posted by: Ryan | August 4, 2009 06:36 PM

This is truly revolting. This woman is a sick twisted individual; as well as the manager she works for. BOTH these individuals need to be charged with animal cruelty and have charges brought against them. I agree that they should also face criminal charges; along with Petland. I certainly will not be an advocate of this or any other pet store which sells animals. It is a shame that animals have to endure the torment and torture that they do at the hands of humans who are supposed to have brains enough to know that they depend on our charity for their survival. People like this make my stomach lurch!

Posted by: Nielle Pacilli | August 4, 2009 06:39 PM

THIS WOMAN SHOULD HAVE EXPERIMENTS DONE TO HER BRAIN TO FIND OUT WHAT THE F#C*K IS WRONG WITH HER THEN DROWNED HER. I CANT BELIVE THIS SH8T ACTUALLY OCCURS!!!

Posted by: John DeGennaro | August 4, 2009 06:43 PM

I don't know what is more disturbing: that this miserable human being believes that killing an injured animal is something to gloat about (and that she and her manager are the only ones who would not be horrified), or that there isn't really anything bad enough the law can do to address this as animals are essentially considered property (legally, there is no such thing as "murdering" an animal). Cruelty to animals on this level merits a far worse punishment than what is currently available, but while this is the (unfortunate) case, spreading the word about incidents like this and making sure this disgusting woman will be taunted, pointed at and hopefully spit on wherever she goes can at least ensure that someone else might think twice before torturing an animal and boasting about it online. Perhaps enough negative publicity about this can be generated so that she and her manager will be fired and will never get hired again anywhere near to where this happened. Until the law recognizes the severity of acts such as this one, and creates a punishment sufficient to address and deter further cruelty to animals, we must collectively react in such a way that enables us to accomplish what the law currently fails to do.

Posted by: Blaire | August 4, 2009 06:43 PM

Honestly, I was so shocked that I had to re-read this soul-wrenching article. I cannot believe that this (for lack of a truly descriptive word) pathetic excuse for a human being could do something so sickening and smile and have it all caught on tape and then broadcast for the entire world to see!!!

What kind of people own Petland? Are they really humans? Do they have no minimum qualifications for their employees.

Rabbits are the sweetest, most benign creatures on the planet. To actually hold them underwater while they struggle violently for breath takes a dangerously sick individual.

If she is not arrrested for egregious animal cruelty, then we truly have lost our sense of what is morally and ethically acceptable.

Somehow I find it quite plausible to picture this sickening monster holding her own baby after she drowned it because it "cried too much."

Words are failing me.

Posted by: Susan T | August 4, 2009 06:43 PM

What an idiot!
To play devil's advocate, however, perhaps she isn't very bright and maybe she is easily manipulated into doing stupid things...take her hair for example...

Posted by: Hillary | August 4, 2009 06:44 PM

I can tell you I am completly disgusted, horrified and utterly dishearted about this article, I WILL NEVER EVER SHOP OR PROMOTE THIS STORE!!! These ignorant sadistic individuals should be brought before a Judge and jury to have the highest form of punishment handed to them. I can also tell you after five minutes with me the female would NOT be smiling.. I would...

Posted by: Brittany | August 4, 2009 06:50 PM

well as my mom always says treat others how you want to be treated. i think animals are included in this statement. so really this girl should drown with her stupid satistic smile :)

Posted by: cat | August 4, 2009 06:52 PM

Not surprised. I used to work for Dr. Steven Hicks who is the veterinarian for the Akron Petland and he is an EXTREMELY abusive person, to pets and animals both. This is disturbing on many levels and something needs to be done to stop this. If you know friends or family that thake their pets to Dr. Steven Hicks, PLEASE pass this information on to them!!

EMAIL This article and LINK and INFO TO the AKRON, OH POLICE DEPARTMENT (Police@ci.akron.oh.us) and insist that Elizabeth Carlisle be arrested for felony animal abuse.

State that she is 26 years old and this took place at the Petland at 2000 Brittain Road, # 71, Akron, OH 44310 (330) 633-5677

This is the Ohio law against animal cruelty:
§ 959.13 Cruelty to animals.

(A) No person shall:

(1) Torture an animal, deprive one of necessary sustenance, unnecessarily or cruelly beat, needlessly mutilate or kill, or impound or confine an animal without supplying it during such confinement with a sufficient quantity of good wholesome food and water;

Shouldn't this apply this this situation? Shouldn't she be in jail??

Posted by: jose | August 4, 2009 06:58 PM

This "girl, monster, moron, or whatever she is, should be in jail. She is a very disturbed person. Petland must also assume full responsibility for these inhumane actions. Carslile, you are a disgrace!

Posted by: David Rosenbaum | August 4, 2009 06:58 PM

WOW. Google - petland ohio - & you'll find a TON of complaints about them over the past 9 YEARS!! This place needs to be shut down! Obviously, given their history, this wasn't an isolated incident. This company truely doesn't care for any animals. Petland needs to be charged with animal cruelty to the fullest & all their stores need to be SHUT DOWN!! WHY hasn't this happened yet???????

Posted by: april benney | August 4, 2009 06:59 PM

What a twisted person. No one gets to call the shots on whether another living creature gets to die or not. She deserves to spend the rest of her days caged up enduring 'animal' testing so she can experience the agony many rabbits, like Petland ones, expect and endure throughout their entire lives. Elizabeth you are a disgusting & cruel individual.

Posted by: Breanna Carey | August 4, 2009 07:00 PM

These places need to be shut down for good.I have heard horror stories from these stores all over the country. Animal cruelty is punishable by law. I hope that girl gets the full penalty of it.

Posted by: laura | August 4, 2009 07:00 PM

I live about 45 minutes away from akron ohio, I'm not surprised seeing someone from akron doing this. There are so many low lives that live there. I'm sure there are good ones but this is so typical of the people I have encountered from that city. I will never shop at petland, these actions and pictures and them being proud of it is just plain sick. Is something being done about this? At least the manager and the girl in the picture? How can she be proud of this...gross.

Posted by: Carrie | August 4, 2009 07:03 PM

WTF is wrong with people?? She needs some mental help seriously it doesn't matter if it's only a rabbit they are alive too just like us how about I drown that stupid biotch and see how much she likes it!!!!!

Posted by: Mandi | August 4, 2009 07:07 PM

If someone is grinning from ear to ear afer watching something struggle in fear for it's life and not having any control over it's self, is just unbelievably barbaric, unethical, and inhumaine. When are people going to realize non-human life needs to be treated and respected as human life. If this woman is not prosecuted then I would start questioning the judicial systems ethics....

This is crazy...WTF was this "lady" thinking???

Posted by: Jenny | August 4, 2009 07:09 PM

Wtf is wrong with people, honestly. Have you no heart? how can you sit there and be happy about first letting animals torture, injure and EAT each other, and then continue by drowning these cute and fluffy bunnies. That is sick and pathetic, how could you ever take the life of something else and not feel bad about it? HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT!?!??

First she didn't need to drown them, that's way to slow. If they are that bad the neck can be broken and it's alot faster. Taking them to the vet to be put down would be my choice. But for cheap people like this anything would have been better then holding them under the water. Second the fact that the manager took a photo and the employee is smiling just makes me sick and sad that people are so cruel.

Posted by: Abby | August 4, 2009 07:12 PM

Those women need to be institutionalized. They clearly are psychopaths and have no morals whatsoever. They better get in some kind of trouble. Even though a lot of people will try to say, "Oh well, it's just an animal, not a human..." Animal have a beating heart, lungs, and emotions just like us. And most serial killers start out with animals, so something does need to be done with those sick freaks.

Posted by: Betsy Bottelberghe | August 4, 2009 07:13 PM

Seriously?? What kind of monster would smile at this?? What a total jerk.

Posted by: fidela | August 4, 2009 07:15 PM

I was horrified when I saw this picture. I am a bunny owner and it makes me so sad they had such a poor quality of life, and these two disturbed people took such delight in killing them. If they were sick they should have had medical treatment and been humanly put down. I am absolutely disgusted that Petland could allow such heartless people to work around such vulnerable animals. I hope their actions will not go unpunished.

Posted by: Tiffany | August 4, 2009 07:15 PM

I can't believe people would have the nerve to smile about something like that. That does bother me. I bought a dog there a while ago and she almost died. she was all jacked up on steriods just to make her look okay to be sold for way too much. How sad.

Posted by: Stephanie | August 4, 2009 07:16 PM

What an evil person! Who in their right minds can do that and smile about it? Looks like a future serial killer to me! STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY!!!!

Posted by: Steph | August 4, 2009 07:19 PM

Of course there's a cruelty case, wouldn't be surprise to see this on CNN shortly. What are the penalties to the statute above? I can look it up later. Stupid, stupid, stupid, to say the least.

Posted by: Robert Howe | August 4, 2009 07:20 PM

OH MY GOD! I really hope that this woman and her manager are arrested! What a psycho!

Posted by: amber | August 4, 2009 07:20 PM

Yeah, nice grin on your face. You won't be grinning when Karma comes back at you ELIZABETH.

Posted by: heathaho | August 4, 2009 07:21 PM

Good luck trying to get a REAL job in the future, Elizabeth. My company and every other company out there does internet searches on ALL job candidates. Not only did you kill those poor rabbits, you also pretty much killed your future. Karma is a serious b**ch, isn't it?

Posted by: Kelley | August 4, 2009 07:24 PM

This young woman has a very good chance of becoming a serial killer of humans. WHEN are doctors and authorities going to see this behavior as it is early on before more animals AND eventually humans are killed?

Posted by: Debbie Pope | August 4, 2009 07:24 PM

I live about 10 minutes from a Petland in Maple Heights, Ohio. I never go into pet stores because profiting from the sale of pets is disgusting. We don't sell humans. The adoption?sale of pets should be regulated like the adoption of people. Then. the people who really want a pet will continue the adoption process and those that do not will abandon the idea.

I hope PETA organizes a simultaneous protest day outside of all of the Petlands. I will definitely be there.

Posted by: Sarah V | August 4, 2009 07:31 PM

OMG! What a perverted, horrible, ugly, sicko. she probably beats children too. She should really consider therepy....or church. She obviously needs serious help.

ugly a** girl holding two animals much more prettier than herself. I hope she reads these & sees how much she is hated.

Posted by: Jamie | August 4, 2009 07:42 PM

The store phone number is (330) 633-5677 and the mall police number is 330-815-7171 and the mall management number is 330-633-7100 Lets get this women and her manager out of the store, arrested and the store shut down. This is insane.

Posted by: Cindy | August 4, 2009 07:43 PM

I have not and will NEVER purchase from Petland.

What is being done about this?!??!

Posted by: JulieAnn | August 4, 2009 07:43 PM

I am horrified by this story, but it seems that instead of telling a national chain not to sell pets, perhaps they should be required to close this location, make a public apology, and allow a third party probe into their other stores to see that animals are being treated respectfully. I completely agree that it's wrong to breed and sell animals, but instead of making an unreasonable request that makes us look excessive, we should make reasonable demands that might actually be met.

Posted by: Cindy Childress | August 4, 2009 07:45 PM

I wish everybody that did this the very same.... REVOLTING "human" beings.....

Posted by: Cecilia | August 4, 2009 07:47 PM

I can't look at this. Plz PETA do everything you can to try to get this girl arrested. Thank GOD FOR PETA! I LOVE YOU GUYS!

Posted by: Karen | August 4, 2009 08:00 PM

WOW!Absolutely deplorible! This "lady"&I use this term loosely, smiling like a demented freak out of a horror flick, should be charged to the fullest extent of the law&unfortunately, that won't be enough for me&most of us!Wonder how her parents kiss that wicked, evil face everyday!

Posted by: Cynthia Johnson | August 4, 2009 08:00 PM

GREAT NEWS! The Akjron Humane Society responded to me 'phone message, and the agent said this girl IS being prosecuted. She will be appearing in Court. Someone posted the OH anti-cruelty statute. Does that show penalties, too? PROBLEM: Many States treat animal abuse as a simple misdemeanor. I believe only a few will treat it as a felony. NEXT STEP: Need to make sure we know when Elizabeth Carlisle's court date is. I will find that out and post it.

Posted by: Charlie2002 | August 4, 2009 08:02 PM

How can you live with yourself when being so cruel to any animals let alone to something so innocent as rabbits. I only hope GOd blesses me the chance to run into you someday!!

Posted by: Scott | August 4, 2009 08:05 PM

I feel sick. I hurt for those poor babies. :,(

Posted by: Lisa Paredes | August 4, 2009 08:08 PM

I am in total and complete shock. I am a house rabbit Mom and when I saw this story on Facebook I can honestly say I was sick to my stomach. Why is there no information about charging this psychologically disturbed girl and her store manager with abuse? What is wrong with people? All I can say is KARMA is a B**CH little Petland Girl.

Posted by: Jennifer | August 4, 2009 08:11 PM

Posted by: Alexa | August 4, 2009 08:14 PM

this is horrible.. i will never understand how a person can hurt an innocent animal.. and the fact that she was swearing at them telling them to hurry up and die.. this girl must be sick in the head.. when someone has the desire to kill animals or living things.. its a mental illness..this is disturbing and heartbreaking and makes me sick.

Posted by: emily | August 4, 2009 08:20 PM

People aren't psychotic for doing this, or do they need to be locked up. Maybe blame should fall back on the higher ups in the business. Could it be that the owners are too cheap to have the animals properly euthanized? So the employees that feel bad for the animals try to find a quicker alternative so the animals don't have to suffer?

Posted by: NA | August 4, 2009 08:21 PM

May the guilt eat HER alive

Posted by: judy | August 4, 2009 08:24 PM

This is not a woman!! I hope to god this thing does not have children..

Posted by: Peta Newsome | August 4, 2009 08:24 PM

This is absolutely deplorable. I more than hope that this girl and the company is charged and that part of her sentencing is years of therapy!! Just plain sick.

We had a girl like this in Ontario. She worked for a Vet's office and thought it funny to send the docked tails of dogs, and the cat claws in letters that she would mail to her friends. A few years later she and her husband was charged for murder of several high school girls....this story reminded me of her. Just sick sick sick.

Posted by: Vanessa Hurst | August 4, 2009 08:28 PM

I hope they fired that b**ch and the manager. WTF is wrong with people?

Posted by: Sara | August 4, 2009 08:28 PM

I sincerely hope she gets what she deserves, its just a shame that euthanasing people like this is illegal.

Posted by: Darren | August 4, 2009 08:29 PM

This is a terrible siutation. Petland has obviously encourage their employees to do such horrific acts on animals.

This girl has psychological issues. It's quite obvious...more importantly "Petland" has a bad reputation; as they do not care about their animals and how they are treated in their care. Everyone should boycott this evil petstore. I'm sure there are other so called petstores that have not been investigated for cruelty against animals. These people who killed these bunnies should be charged for a crime!...DISGUSTING PEOPLE...

Posted by: Katie | August 4, 2009 08:32 PM

its about time for a law against people having pets other than dogs and cats. people should have to qualify to have dogs and cats as well. so many animals are tortured. i have rescued so many from lizards, fish, a tarantula from people who neglected them. i watch a lizard have a seizure bc i got to him too late. its sickening what goes on out there...how can we change this?

Posted by: Tara Dolinski | August 4, 2009 08:42 PM

Posted by: dominique | August 4, 2009 08:51 PM

I don´t know....I don´t know what the hell is doing that b**ch on an animal shelter.Sorry for my bad language but it makes me really mad and angry watching these people who are supposted that they take care of animals but instead they make them fight and eat each other and at the end when the poor little fellows have suffered enough, they killed them.THIS HAS TO STOP!

Posted by: Nathalie Cabrera | August 4, 2009 08:51 PM

Hopefully, someone who knows her will take her out and give her what she deserves! If I could I would be the first in line! I know all of this is very strong but someone needs to stop this even if it means we have to get violent too!

That makes me physically sick. These ppl should be in jail. Anyone remember Micheal Vick( Football dude)?? Yeah he was involved with dog fighting but same thing cruelty to animals and he was in huge trouble for it so these women who drown rabbits and take pics of them for fun should too. Is anyone doing anything about it? Ppl talk about it but nobody does anything thats also the disturbing part. I hope for the sake of the poor animals at Petland that there is justice served. I'm a great believer in Karma and it comes around. Those employees will get whats coming.

Posted by: heather m smith-mello | August 4, 2009 11:02 PM

How can anybody be so unbeleivably sick. How is it even possible for somebody to do that? This is the type of person that turns into a serial killer...I'm serious.

Posted by: Kitcat490 | August 4, 2009 11:04 PM

Wow..this is absolutely disgusting. How can someone have the nerve to drown something and then smile about it. Charges should definitely be taken. I will never ever shop at petland again, and will tell all relatives and family about this incident and to encourge everyone I know to NOT shop there. This is sick. What sick human beings we have on this planet who enjoy the torture of helpless animals..ughh....may the bunnies who underwent this torture come back as something that will influence this girls life in a horrible way. Oh so I hope.

Posted by: Carly Fraser | August 4, 2009 11:15 PM

this is like cockfighting...it should be illegal to have rabbits fight each other!

Posted by: Lauren | August 4, 2009 11:30 PM

This girl needs to clearly explain these photos. If in fact she drowned these bunnies while employed with Petland or not, she is an accomplice and needs to be punished along with the company itself. Petland NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS TO THE PUBLIC ASAP since there are too many of us upset by this!!??

I will contact them as well to demand answers.

Posted by: Jill St.Marie | August 4, 2009 11:31 PM

This is making the Akron/Cleveland area 19 action news, but Fox and Channel 3 are not covering this story. I have send a copy of blog entry to all local papers in 50 mile radius. I just hope the photographer is identified soon.

Posted by: Rachel | August 4, 2009 11:33 PM

If Michael Vick is an example of what should happen to someone when they commit a crime against an animal--meaning, being tried before a court and then sent to jail, then Elizabeth Carlisle should face the same.

I would also think she needs some sort of mental evaluation, as she is clearly unstable.

So sad.

Posted by: Justin | August 4, 2009 11:34 PM

This is disgusting I hope some sort of charges are being brought on all involved.

Posted by: Chelsea George | August 4, 2009 11:43 PM

Posted by: Janice Giampaoli | August 4, 2009 11:46 PM

Their lives must be very sad and meaningless if they need to vent their frustrations by abusing innocent, beautiful and defenseless beings. I bet that's the only way they can feel powerful and in control.

Please make sure that these people never hurt an animal again!

I really hope to run into her one day...

Posted by: Judith Smith | August 5, 2009 12:01 AM

I think that this story is very disturbing and that action should be taken against this person, but not all Petlands are bad to their animals. I have worked at a Petland for quite some time and our store treats their animals very well. Obviously I cannot say this for EVERY store, but it is unfair to say that PETLAND or any other large pet store is cruel in general. This person is cruel, not necessarily the company.

Posted by: Grace | August 5, 2009 12:16 AM

Everything about this photo and article is disturbing. I hope this woman and whoever else involved in this horrific and inhumane crime has to pay the costs.

Posted by: Julie K. | August 5, 2009 12:20 AM

Please forward this to the girl's local newspaper and police department and get some animal cruelty charges filed!

Posted by: Luke Thomas | August 5, 2009 01:15 AM

What a sick person to do this! She should get charged with animal cruelty. Also along with her manager that apparently thought it was funny too. And what an idiot to go on facebook and post the pictures. Petland just needs to be shut down. Every animal there does not get the proper care. I do not support them what so ever.

Posted by: Katie Holmes | August 5, 2009 01:22 AM

There are no words to describe a person like this. May she personally come to know the pain and suffering she inflicted on these innocent creatures. It saddens me to know that where this bonehead would publisize her deplorable actions, there are hundres and thousands of others who do not. I hope there is a way to punish these people for there evil deeds. So sad we have to even acknowledge her actions.

Posted by: Lisa | August 5, 2009 01:23 AM

As bad as this is let the lawyers do their work and lets do something relevant, because millions of animals are killed in slaughterhouses every minute.

From Petland's website - what do you think?

"PETLAND OUTRAGED AT INCIDENT IN AKRON STORE

(CHILLICOTHE, OHIO – August 4) -- Petland, Inc. has been made aware of an isolated incident at the Petland store in Akron, Ohio as it relates to the mistreatment of rabbits and has immediately become involved in the investigation. The store, located in Chapel Hill Mall, is individually owned and operated by a local franchisee.

This information is horrifying and in no way reflects the values, policies and procedures demanded of Petland stores. Petland is saddened and outraged at this gross violation of Petland's animal care standards. It is Petland's understanding that the employee was instructed to contact the store's consulting veterinarian, and instead, defied the orders and store policy and acted on her own. She was immediately dismissed and the case is now being handled by local law enforcement. Petland, Inc. is conducting its own internal investigation.

This is an isolated incident that is horrific and inexcusable and will not be tolerated. Petland will take any and all action necessary as this does not, in any way, represent the culture and dedication to animal care of the thousands of caring Petland employees working across the country every day."

... it's a sick world we live in... and we have to stop cowards like this one by all means.

Posted by: Robin | August 5, 2009 05:10 AM

This is seriously disgusting and disturbing! I hope there will be prosecutions. The photo alone, if not taken out of context, is enough to warrant this. This type of action shows we as humans should not have the reigns to the world as we do, we are not responsible enough.

Posted by: Patrick Ryan | August 5, 2009 05:36 AM

yeap ...stupidity has no limits! So miserable and pathetic some samples of human kind!

Posted by: manos papadimitrakis | August 5, 2009 05:45 AM

I am utterly disgusted by this woman. How could anyone feel proud of taking the lives of two defenceless animals, especially in such a cruel way? It takes a very sick, twisted person to do such a thing and an even more sick and twisted person to smile and post the photo on the Internet. She deserves to be put in jail, fined and banned from working with or keeping animals for life, whilst Petland should be forced to end the sale of animals as pets. From what I've read this isn't the only case of abuse in their stores and it has to stop.

Posted by: Hayley | August 5, 2009 06:15 AM

Oh jeez.. I thought this was a joke when I first saw it! Why cant we find a way to cull all humans like this? rather than, say, elephants in Africa?!?

Posted by: Danielle Causer | August 5, 2009 06:22 AM

Does anyone think she committed this act without the manager approving it beforehand? Fire the manager.

I think Elizabeth is hot!

Why doesnt this so called girl???? if thats what she is make a comment probably no guts ....as they say weak as piss, has to do this to animals that cant even begin to fight back, like you and many others in this world rot in hell cause they are all gods creatures.... and you are the worse kind

When I first saw this, I literally had no words. This is disturbing not only because she is grinning like an idiot, but because it could be people that you know and love doing this to animals. Wow.

Posted by: junie Wadhawan | August 5, 2009 08:34 AM

This just makes me sick! I can't believe that she was allowed to work at a pet store when she has absolutely no compassion for animals! What is even worse is that her MANAGER took the picture and condoned her behavior!!! I am ashamed to be born, raised, and currently living an hour away from where this took place!

Posted by: Crystal | August 5, 2009 08:51 AM

This pet shop sounds horrible. it shld be shut down.. and i hope she has been sacked..and for any other animal hope like hell she doesnt get another job in a pet store...

I just called the Akron Humane Society and was told the situation is "being handled", I tried to reach the mall manager at 330-633-7100 and of course he wasn't at his desk. I did leave a message urging him to void Petlands lease. Yeah, right huh? The might dollar rules. Now onto the local papers.

Posted by: Cindy | August 5, 2009 09:34 AM

This is crazy and sick. I can only hope that photo will serve as evidence to make sure this woman is prosecuted to the full extent of the law. What is wrong with people??? Why on earth would you work in a pet store if you hate animals and want to see them suffer? I hope they do a full-scale investigation and shut this store down and prosecute everyone involved...none of those people should be allowed to work with or be near animals ever again!!!

Posted by: Jemmy Siefert | August 5, 2009 09:37 AM

PETA! Please update us on what will happen to this no-brainer and the manager. Hope they get charged big time. That f-ing idiot.

Posted by: Mari | August 5, 2009 09:53 AM

Although I find this picture and the actions deplorable, I believe that it is short sighted to assume that Petland condones this type of behavior and that because of this incident, people would suggest that Petland not be allowed to sell bunnies or any animals.
People are human, and unfortunately, there are alot of "bad eggs" out there. (Just some sick people that the rest of us have to deal with and deal with any consequences based on their actions). I'm sure that Petland will deal with whomever was involved in the situation and work with the authorities to press charges.

We purchased our puppy - Leo - from Petland several years ago, and have only had all good to say about our local Petland store and their employees in Powell, Ohio.

Posted by: Lisa | August 5, 2009 10:09 AM

If she does this to animals? Imagine what she'd do to small children. This is absurd!

Posted by: Tristane N'golet | August 5, 2009 10:15 AM

I think these stores need to be shut down or harder regulations need to be placed on these companies. These things should not be going on nor continue.

Posted by: Rebecca Winkelman | August 5, 2009 10:16 AM

There is deep darkness in the human soul. This is proof. What if we invert the roles, imagine a bunny holding two humans... then what?

Posted by: Veronica Ellison | August 5, 2009 11:46 AM

This is disgusting. Unfortunately, it is an every day type of event at many pet stores. What you don't see "behind the scenes" is often horrific cruelty, inhumane treatment, ignorant employees, poor housing conditions, etc. People need to STOP supporting pet stores that sell animals. PERIOD. There are plenty of rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, cats, dogs & other animals at shelters & rescues in every state. Often people think they are "saving" an animal from an otherwise unhealthy existence by buying one from a pet store, but they are only supporting the company and the animal will just be replaced by another. Until the public is properly educated & informed and they stop supporting these businesses, the torturous practices will continue.

Posted by: Laurie L | August 5, 2009 12:06 PM

this is digusting. as an animal lover and more specifically a rabbit lover i am deeply disturbed by this. there is obviously something wrong with this chick and her so-called manager. i hope what goes around comes around and that there is justice for those two rabbits

Posted by: Sasha Dean | August 5, 2009 12:14 PM

Posted by: Vernon Wolf | August 5, 2009 12:16 PM

I think Petland should be closed down for good. This is why so many animals are mistreated and the law has no remorse for this behaviour. Shame on us for letting this happen in this day and age.

Posted by: louise bordeleau | August 5, 2009 12:19 PM

Well, I've done some spot checking of the major TV networks and newspapers in and around Akron and so far, not one of them has picked up this shocking story. I guess cruelly drowning rabbits at a nationally recognized "pet store" is not newsworthy.

Please keep us informed of efforts to have these two "psychos" arrested and prosecuted for animal cruelty.

I echo the sentiments of many of the other posters--WTF????
If you have so little regard for animals why are you working with them? These two are in serious need of pyschiatric care.

This incident is why it is so important to create a national database of convicted animal abusers so employers could check it before hiring a potential employee.

I truly hope this spells the end of Petland. If we only knew what goes on behind the scenes. (sigh!!!)

Posted by: Susan T | August 5, 2009 12:19 PM

She is smiling? My jaw dropped when I saw this picture. I always think if someone can kill an innocent animal, watch it suffer as its drowning, what else can they do? I definatly wouldnt want this person, or anyone who allowed this to happen around my children. If I were working there and knew this was happening I would have called the cops and gone in the room to stop them. How can people stand by and allow this to happen? Sick people, Than post it like its something to be proud of? Sick people and I hope these people get charged for animal neglect and abuse.

Posted by: heather | August 5, 2009 12:23 PM

I just want to remind everyone that many Petland stores are franchises, and these types of things are store specific (many times). There are some extremely good Petland stores that take tremendously good care of their animals. I do not work for them, nor have I ever, but I know the owners/managers of one store in particular. This, or anything similar, would absolutely never happen at that particular location.

Posted by: Patrick | August 5, 2009 12:29 PM

HEY!! I wrote to Petland and this is what the sent me back:

PETLAND TERMINATES FRANCHISE AGREEMENT

(CHILLICOTHE, OHIO – August 5) – In response to a recent incident regarding the horrific mistreatment of rabbits at the Petland store in Akron, Ohio, Petland, Inc. has terminated the store owner’s franchise agreement. Effective immediately the store is closed and will not be reopened. The animals will be immediately removed from store located in the Chapel Hill Mall, which was individually owned and operated by a local franchisee.

Petland will in no way, shape or form tolerate any abuse of animals in its care. We are outraged of this gross violation of Petland’s animal care standards.

Petland policy demands that medical treatment and protocol is to be provided and determined by the store’s consulting veterinarian and not be undertaken by an employee. Petland policy also dictates that no animal be euthanized in ANY manner by any staff member.

Petland will take any and all action necessary as this does not, in any way, represent the culture and dedication to animals of the thousands of professional Petland employees who provide extraordinary care every day across the country.

Media inquiries should be directed to Petland’s corporate office, at (740) 775-2464.

I just read on Ohio.com that this Petland is being shut down and this poor excuse of a person is being charged. I hope this is true. Shouldn't the manager and perhaps the owner be charged as well? Glad to hear that the store is being closed but I wonder about the fate of the animals that are at the store now. I hope they are rescued!

Posted by: Emily | August 5, 2009 01:16 PM

Akron pet store closes amid accusations over the drowning of rabbits
By Jim Carney

POSTED: 12:08 p.m. EDT, Aug 05, 2009

Beacon Journal staff writer

The Petland store at Chapel Hill Mall in Akron has been closed after a former employee at the store was charged with two counts of animal cruelty.

Accusations of animal cruelty were raised after the employee allegedly posted a photograph of herself drowning two rabbits in the store's back room on Facebook — an Internet-based social network.

The store has been closed and will not reopen, according to a press release from the Chillicothe-based Petland.

Petland said the decision to close the store was made ''in response to a recent incident regarding the horrific mistreatment of rabbits.''

Tim Harland, senior humane officer for the Humane Society of Greater Akron, said Liz Carlisle, a former employee, has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals in Akron Municipal Court.

Harland said his agency was tipped of the July 28 incident by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

PETA has called on the owner of Petland chain, Ed Kunzelman, and its president Frank Difatta, to no longer sell rabbits at any of its stores nationwide.

Authorities say the Facebook photo showed a smiling Carlisle holding two dead rabbits. The photo was allegedly taken by a store manager.

''Petland will in no way, shape or form tolerate, any abuse of animals in its care,'' the company said in its statement. ''We are outraged of this gross violation of Petland's animal care standards.''

Petland said the animals at the Chapel Hill store will be removed. The store was owned and operated by a local franchisee. Petland did not release the name of the store's owner.

Akron police said they were not aware of the incident.

Petland said it will take ''any and all action necessary as this does not, in any way, represent the culture and dedication to animals of the thousands of professional Petland employees who provide extraordinary care every day across the country.''

PETA, in its statement, said Petland ''should follow the example of other national chains and immediately stop selling these small, vulnerable animals.''

Harland said this appears to have been isolated incident and Carlisle told investigators that it was her decision to drown the rabbits.

''She thought it was in the best interest of the rabbits,'' he said because they had suffered injuries inflicted upon themselves.

Carlisle, 20, of Ravenna, could not be reached for comment. She is scheduled to be in Akron Municipal Court on Aug. 17.

I got my pet rabbit at a Petland store in GA - I hadn't intended on buying a rabbit, but it was love at first sight for me and my bunny. He thankfully showed no outright signs of being injured or abused and was, for his entire life (he passed away a few months ago... :( I still miss him) the sweetest, nicest rabbit I could have asked for. It makes me sick to think about what might have happened to him if he had been in a store with people like that and it breaks my heart to think about what wonderful animals these rabbits could have been for somebody. Pet stores need to be held accountable for what they're doing to these poor animals who count on them for survival

Posted by: DoodleSpoon | August 5, 2009 01:27 PM

They get their animals from mills, where these poor creatures have already been tortured, and now they dont even get the CHANCE to experience a good home, because of this HORRIBLE HORRIBLE person. I live in the area, and i have had completely bad experiences witht the store before i joined peta, and now... UGH. I am sooo glad they are closed. I hope this woman and her manager get even CLOSE to what they deserve. ((which would be to suffer then be drown themseleves.)) Those poor poor animals.

oh my god, the whole world seems to be full of hatred for all gods creations, animal and human alike, but i will wish that no petland stores are ever allowed to be open again, and that goes with all my friends who hope and wish the same.

Sick b****h! I dont even understand why she was even working with animals if she has no care or respect for them! Does anyone know what is happening in terms of punishment for the girl??...especially since she sees fit to harm other living creatures! Has Petland had anything to say? I dont come from the U.S and dont know of Petland but I can not believe that these animals were so terribly neglected, or allowed to be under the care of this sadistic evil person. Upon seeing the photo I felt physically sick and teared up. A normal reaction for such cruetly. Elisabeth Carlilse looks like she is having fun- she must be brought to justice!

Pets and animals are not disposable. For this "woman" to be smiling after killing two rabbits..... you know what they say about those who kill animals.... it shows sadistic and possibly violent impulses. This woman and the manager (who is taking the picture) should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and undergo psychiatric treatment.. not a review or evaluation, but treatment for a very, Very, VERY long time. They should also be banned from life from working with animals, or having animals in their homes.

I found this article and photo horrifying. I cannot believe that the manager had the nerve to take the photo of this girl after she killed those rabbits. Not only should all Petland stores be closed down and stuck with heavy fines, but the law should also really go after the manager of this store along with the empoyee who killed these rabbits. I will never shop with this company and I urge everybody else not to. This place does not deserve business whatsoever.

She has no business working anywhere near animals of any kind. Petland/PETCO/Petsmart... they should not be allowed to sell rabbits or any animal for that matter. So very sad.

Posted by: TS | August 5, 2009 02:27 PM

Guess they haven't posted my first comment but I have been mulling this over in my mind for months, if not years.

With the advent of You-Tube, FAcebook and My-Space, I think it's time for a group, or individual, to create a website that shows pictures, provides legitimate links to these horrific stories, etc. and confirms those who have been convicted of animal cruelty.

IT's about time that animal killers/abusers are called out for what they truly are--sick, disturbed monsters who have no business existing in a civilized society. And, for those who object on the grounds of violating civil rights--to hell with you! These monsters gave up their civil rights when they decided to pursue a path of mindless barbarity.

It's too damn bad that "cap and trade" polices can't apply to scum of the earth. We could "euthanize" all these sickening drains on our precious oxygen and save the lives of innocent, loving creatures languishing and waiting to die in shelters.

DEATH TO ANIMAL ABUSERS!!!!

I can only hope this woman and her manager get jail time. But I would really like to hold their heads under water for a few seconds so they can see/understand the pain they inflicted.

I am not totally surprised that a petstore would do this. Petstores are businesses, their CEO's do not care about animals. Seriously, letting those poor bunnies go would have been more humane then killing them. There are so many other options. I like how Pet Co. and PetSmart accepts unwanted pets and finds them good homes. I think the new jingle for Petland should be

"Petland Discounts, Its the Worst Threat A Pet Can Get"

As both someone who rescues and owns rabbits, this broke my heart. To see that b-t-h smiling after committing MURDER and the conduct of the manager taking pictures, is absolutely disgusting. Both the manager and the employee need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and given the most harsh sentence possible. I hope upon hope that they are sent to prison and receive the same "humane" treatment that they gave these poor sweet bunnies and all the other animals who had the misfortune of being "cared for" by them.

Wow, im so ashamed I live in the same state as this rediculous excuse for a human being.

I can't even begin to discribe how I feel about this waste of precious life.

Posted by: Ashley | August 5, 2009 03:31 PM

What a sick evil bitch. She must receive felony charges for animal cruelty. Our lawmakers need to wake up and push tougher laws on these sociopaths! It's only a matter of time before she moves on to people. Let's hope that she never has a pet or a child... God only knows what she'll do when she loses her temper or becomes bored! She is also obviously a moron for posting a picture of her act of animal cruelty on the INTERNET! We can only hope that she'll get the help she needs -- in PRISON as well as a mental health facility!

Posted by: Katie | August 5, 2009 03:35 PM

She IS hot though... that has to count for something amirite?

Posted by: Tam | August 5, 2009 03:41 PM

I only hope that those rabbits are in a peaceful place now. You reap what you sow, Elizabeth.

Posted by: Caitlin | August 5, 2009 03:43 PM

I love my pet rabbit. She is the sweetest most adorable thing. Always happy to see me when I come home. Breaks my heart to read this.

Posted by: magaly | August 5, 2009 03:43 PM

This is clearly insane and wrong. People who works at a Pet Store should think of Pets as a companion, a live creature, a creature with minds and should love them. This employee cleary did something that defined that she is hateful, evil and cleary not aware that animals have senses human does. I feel this company should put in more stricter qualifications for employment as well as the need to know that these employees will treat, handle and respect these animals. PetLand, fix it or I am not buying anything from you!

Posted by: The Wang | August 5, 2009 03:49 PM

People like this should be locked up for life. It starts with animals then they go on to humans. I am appalled by this on so many levels.

Posted by: CattyGIrl | August 5, 2009 03:50 PM

I mean are you THAT sadistic tht u hve 2 torture dfenseless rabbits! U kno they say people who torture animals grow up to be serial killers?? Well I thnk she and her manager shuld b prosectued or sumthn. So cruel. She shuldnt hve wrked there in the 1st place. I mean ahe looks dmented 2 me, so did they not do a background check!!!

Posted by: Taylor133 | August 5, 2009 03:51 PM

I don't get it...who could do this to a innocent animal? Why is she not getting charged with something?:(

Posted by: Emily | August 5, 2009 03:57 PM

This is a sick and disturbed individual. Poor rabbits! They are smart and affectionate and very loving. Mine is now 12 years old!

Posted by: Linda Gauthier | August 5, 2009 04:04 PM

MarciB--

Honestly, if you have any doubt that these rabbits are DEAD, please, for heavens' sake don't consider becoming a coroner. Better you pursue a career in defending sadists, murders and animal abusers.

How friggin' much proof do you need? Perhaps if you ask, they'll send you one of the dead bunnies!

Uh, she's laughing. She posted it for public viewing and flippantly commented while being photographed that she hoped the rabbits would hurry up and die because people were watching!!!

HELLOOOOOOOO????

Go protest on another forum. You obviously aren't interested in stopping animal cruelty.

Posted by: Susan T | August 5, 2009 04:13 PM

Wow. This is very sad. Poor rabbits. Couldn't they have used euthenasia? Like, drowning is a horrible way to die. I hope she's proud of herself for killing INNOCENT RABBITS!

Posted by: Abby | August 5, 2009 04:28 PM

I have no words to express this. How can you smile for a photo holding two rabbits that you just held under water till they died?

How can someone do this?

Posted by: Martin | August 5, 2009 04:31 PM

You Elizabeth, are a poor example of what is human. I am embarrassed by your existence. You are sick, your manager is sick. Petland stores all over should be shut down. You have no respect for life.

Posted by: Nicole | August 5, 2009 04:32 PM

If I hadn't read this report in "The Consumerist" and then clicked on the link to the picture of Elizabeth Carlisle, I wouldn't have gotten so upset. The post by "NS" is absolutely correct in stating that Elizabeth Carlisle is clearly psychotic. I also agree to urge the authorities to press charges against her and/or place her in an a psychiatric ward for evaluation of psychosis or sociopathy. This woman clearly does not have the emotional capacity to hold compassion for living, animate objects such as animals, as far as we can tell from the picture. She needs help. If she truly thinks that this is a funny situation, she is not fit for living freely within American society.

Elizabeth Carlisle is clearly a very sick individual.

Posted by: Scott | August 5, 2009 04:38 PM

People who commit acts of violence or cruelty towards animals should really be treated by the legal system as if they had committed those same acts against another human being. End of story.

Posted by: David O. | August 5, 2009 04:52 PM

How come this isn't all over the news, local and national? People who wouldn't normally care about animal welfare do tend to stop and speak out when they are made aware of this kind of story, since it is a chain store they probably visit themselves.

Posted by: Robin | August 5, 2009 05:01 PM

God will get her for this...not only does HE deplore injuries to others but also to innocent animals.

Posted by: Martha | August 5, 2009 05:01 PM

Perhaps she and her manager were trained at Abu Ghraib? Oh wait, those rabbits had fur.

One has to make light of this a little to make it bearable, how sad a pet shop would allow such horrific care of their charges (pets for sale).

I do hope that Petland suffers for their actions and inactions.

Posted by: sevenwhitehorses | August 5, 2009 05:04 PM

The idiots at Petland don't care about life, they only care about profit. People buy rabbits to feed to their snakes, to torture, to tire of and let go in the wild - this piece of crap and her supervisor are just beating people to the punch. Don't shop at PET stores and urge everyone you know to do the same!

Posted by: Shelly | August 5, 2009 05:07 PM

Words cannot describe these horrendous cold-blooded poor excuses for human beings! As a person who not only owns but also rescues rabbits, I am absolutely sickened by the horrendous acts of violence upon such sweet-loving bunnies. I hope upon hope that these worthless scumbags are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and sent to prison where, hopefully, they will be treated with the same "humane" treatment.

Media inquiries should be directed to Petland’s corporate office, at (740) 775-2464

Instead of firing this sick women and smacking her, the manager of this useless lady decided to take the photos instead. SICK!

Posted by: Mike | August 5, 2009 05:26 PM

Atrocious.
Some people are demented. How twisted.

Posted by: Arch | August 5, 2009 05:36 PM

Kudos to all the people that called the store, the police, the newspaper!

Petland is having a PR nightmare right now - but it's about their image (ie profits), not animal welfare. Unfortunately the frenzy over this will die down at some point.

What's really awful is that - from what I read - this is a misdemeanor and if caught a SECOND time, only then does it become a felony. If this girl is capable of what she did, she has probably done other things that were NOT publicized and she will probably be more careful in the future. That is truly chilling. The first offense should be a felony. A slap on the wrist is not going to "cure" sadism. She also should be prohibited from ever working with or owning animals. There should be a criminal record that warns potential employers.

Does anybody have an answer about the supervisor or manager involved? I have searched the news stories and there is no mention of any action taken against that person.

PETA needs to investigate the owners of the Akron franchise. They also have a store on Boardman, Ohio. You're definitely not hearing the entire story. I know a current and a former employee and their hands are tied by mgmt. as far as the vet care these animals receive. I agree the young lady made a serious error in judgment -- all around, but most of the people who work in the store love and care about the animals in their care.

There are MUCH better ways to handle a situation like that, like nurse them back to health, and send them off free to a good home! They should have been seperated at first sings of fighting. I can't believe that those rabbits had to suffer due to their incompetence. Both the girl in the picture and the mgr who took it should be fired, as I'm sure they will be, and charged with animal cruelty with the max penalties since they seemed so proud of themselves.

bunny basher has been fired and has charges filed, she has to appear the 17th this month in court, the manager and everyone else in this store is now out of a job, petland revoked the owners franchise and moved all the animals to other store locations...

Liz is going to court August 17th to be charged with 2 counts of animal cruelty. I'm facebook friends with her and have met her twice and was positively SHOCKED to see her photo of the drowned rabbits. I myself am a huge animal lover and am extremely distraught. I cannot believe she would do something this disgusting...things like this give me nightmares. I really hope she does get the max penalty. I thought she was a nice person....our mutual friend said that Liz was 'forced to do this'. She could have said no and quit on the spot! How can you put money over morals and innocent animals' suffering???

Congratulations on Petland for hiring a future Jeffery Dahmer...I have noticed an unusual number of serial killers come from Ohio, and here is a perfect example of one in the making....I also have read some of the former letters describing Akron, as a cesspool of human degenerates...there needs to be a formal investigation/study on this area to figure out why such psychopaths reside there...and I thought California was bad????

Let them know that their name is now involved in a very negative story about an appalling crime. Animal Cruelty is only a misdemeanor is Ohio, so please help this story get as much exposure as possible so these disgusting people get more than just a slap on the wrist!

From other comments it became clear that these two rabbits had suffered terribly as they had deep wounds from being allowed to fight each other, one had an eye missing and what staff thought was a broken jaw and paralysis from the waist down.

Now the Petland location in Akron has been closed due to public outcry over the treatment of the two animals. Petland Inc. has terminated the store owner's franchise agreement and the store will not reopen. Petland has said they will not allow animal abuse of any kind.

PETA wants sales of rabbits banned at all Petland stores.

Elizabeth Carlisle has been charged with animal cruelty and will appear in Akron Municipal Court on August 17th.

The Akron Humane Society released the following statement late Wednesday afternoon:

Many individuals are inquiring about the drowning of two bunny rabbits at the Chapel 1-Jill Mall Petland store,. The incident was reported to Senior Humane Officer Tim Harland by PETA on July 29. 2009, "Once we received the call, this was treated like any other investigation and I met with Gary Winslow the franchise owner to begin the investigation," said Harland., After a lengthy investigation which included 1-larland interviewing the accused, he determined that the incident did occur and she acted on her own. Today two counts of misderieanor animal cruelty charges were filed in Akron. Municipal Court,, These are M Class charges which make this an enhanccable crime which means if she is ever charged. with animal cruelty again it will turn into a felony..

"The Humane Society of Greater Akron investigates cruelty and abuse in Summit County 365 days a year.. However the use of a social networking website, as was used in this incident, is a bigger twist," said Harland.

Yeah, bigger twist in that they were caught...

Posted by: Juno | August 5, 2009 09:39 PM

This is disgusting! What is with the grin on her face? She and the manager should face charges and never work with animals again. Poor babies. What a horrible way to die :(

Posted by: Marleen | August 5, 2009 09:40 PM

You know what kills me is that if those had been two human babies she drowned, she would get the death penalty. I say she should get the death penalty no matter who she drowns. It's time to do away with this "human is god" thing. Those rabbits suffered just as much as a human baby would. Until the laws reflect the truth that all animals are equal, there will be monsters that will do these things to animals.
Killers should be killed, period.

Posted by: Missy | August 5, 2009 09:54 PM

So what if the animals were suffering and her decision to drown them was ultimately correct? This reactionary outrage is a little absurd; it's a snapshot in time, and does nothing to give us an idea of who this girl is. Regardless of her complicity in their previous disgusting treatment, this snap judgment from everyone regarding a picture is a little sickening.

Posted by: Corey | August 5, 2009 10:17 PM

Posted by: gabriela lemus | August 5, 2009 10:53 PM

this was definitely a sick exposure to what is in her mind.

Posted by: ROZIRED | August 5, 2009 11:21 PM

First of all- do NOT lump all people from Akron together. We are NOT all the same. Secondly, this Petland is not actually in Akron; it's in Cuyahoga Falls.

I was at Chapel Hill Mall today when a friend told me she heard this story on the news this morning. We walked to the other end of the mall to see the store, not believing something like that could really be true... and for anyone wondering, the store is closed. All visible cages are empty' the doors are gated and covered with black tarps so no one can see inside, and there is a handwritten sign that simply says "WE ARE CLOSED TODAY 6/5/09".

I have no idea what else transpired since the incident.

Posted by: Karen | August 5, 2009 11:30 PM

I am too stunned for words. What a heartless, demented b*tch. Just the fact that she feels she accomplished something by taking the lives of two innocent animals, it's truly sickening. Just the way she's smiling...it's just so, evil and frightening. All I know is that I wouldn't want to be her child. This terrible excuse for a person can rot in hell.

Posted by: anna | August 5, 2009 11:54 PM

All Petland stores should not be allowed to sell any animals!!
Don't buy while some die!!!
This is not the only Petland store that animal cruelty is happening at. They have been investigated, and protested many times and asked not to buy their dogs from puppy mills. Yet they still do! Why don't they listen? Because ignorant people are still buying them! Please stop buying them and they will quit selling them!
The other animals left at this store, which is now closed, will go to other Petland stores. To be abused there? You can read the story at Pets.Ohio.com. Akron Beacon journal.
This person is a pshyco! Jeffery Dahmer started out abusing animals! We have to have tougher animal cruelty laws!!!!

What time?
Is anyone organizing a protest? I would love to be there. I only live 1 hour away.
Why isn't the manager who took this photo being charged with animal cruelty? Or is she or he?
Can you (PETA) notify me of any protest at Petland stores and her trial. I will send letters to Akron officials and Petland HQ. To the person who posted them, Thanks for the emails and addresses!
Is there a petition online to sign for the conviction of this person?

Posted by: otton | August 6, 2009 12:45 AM

You know, I'm curious to know why 1. she's wearing scrubs and 2. the rabbits appear to be hairless?
To me it looks like rabbits used for dissection fresh out of preserving fluid. This is coming from someone who's dissected a cat in high school, so I know what an animal looks like after being preserved in formaldehyde.
This whole thing seems sketchy. The story may be real but I believe the photo was taken out of context.

Drowning is a horrible way to die! Plus you are actively doing something verrrrry viloent. What is wrong with this girl? She needs a psych exam. Why couldn't they responsibly care for the animals in the first place!!?, or keep them in a pet hospital to recover. They should have those resources as an option if this is their business. Even euthanizing them makes more sense than to have a human evilly do this!

Allowing these animals to suffer like this, surely prosecution should be brought to the owners of the company, not just the sick people they employ??

Posted by: Sj | August 6, 2009 06:47 AM

I am thankful that you are requesting that they no longer sell rabbits. These stores do not educate customers about the needs of rabbits, showing them along with hamsters and other small cage animals. Rabbits are unique in their needs. I hope you are successful in your endeavor!

Posted by: Diane | August 6, 2009 08:31 AM

I hope she rots in jail. Maybe then she won't be grinning. Why do animal abusers get a slap on the wrist? Jeffrey Damer started killing animals and then people. Why don't the courts see that?

Posted by: Cathy Jordan | August 6, 2009 08:35 AM

Clearly this woman has deep rooted psychological/mental problems to actually take pleasure in torturing and killing these precious animals! Then, to make matters worse, she flaunts it on Facebook! Obviously she has no conscience nor is she concerned about the ramifications of her sick actions. I hope that she repents before it's too late...also I'm a firm believer that we "reap what we sow." May justice be served in this situation and vindication for the senseless murder of these precious animals which are God's beautiful creation.

I live in Akron and alot of these pet shops get their animals from the Amish puppy mills. The Amish aren't too far from here. Petland is a piece of garbage in itself. Maybe she did them a favor because I do not doubt for a second the conditions were horrid in that store.

I can't adequately express my distress and revulsion. This woman and those who encouraged her are monsters and deserve a fate much worse than what the poor rabbits were subjected to.
I don't know how people so sick can live with themselves.

Posted by: Ros Lamb | August 6, 2009 10:38 AM

If conditions in this store are as horrid and deplorable as suspected they shouldn't be allowed to sell any animals. I think they should be closely monitored to determine whether or not neglect and abuse is common practice. From testimonials of previous employees and potential customers it unfortunately sounds like this is the case. The employees, and higher ups in the company need to be held accountable. No more innocent animals should have to suffer. As for Elizabeth Carlisle and her picture taking manager, they should have they're heads shoved under water so they themselves can suffer as their helpless victims did. In all seriousness, I truly hope whoever is in charge of sentencing these obviously mentally ill individuals not only throws the book at them but makes an example out of them as well. People need to know even if they are mentally unstable and/or morally corrupt this is NOT okay in the eyes of the law.

Posted by: BunnyLuv | August 6, 2009 11:40 AM

I just read about the two rabbits that were mistreated (understatement) and then drowned by the store employee while the manager took a picture of the smiling employee with the rabbits. This is one of the most horrifying, inhumane, and IMMATURE (to say the LEAST) acts made by ANY pet store and/or its employees. I think the ASPCA and PETA in the area should get involved in charges against these people involved as well as periodically checking the other stores in the chain since they seem to not have sufficient background checks on the employees before they are hired.

well i went to this store often and there were animals sick and in bad shape every time i would go. one of the magagers a black woman with glasses picked up a dog by the ear let one of the men who worked there cut a dogs toenails he did not know what he was doing because blood was everywhere he cussed the dog out and the dog was crying so bad and let this be known it dog was old so that proved to me that the people working here were so messed up and had no right working there i called on them many times its sad that this had to happen for it to be closed for good i hope they get whats coming to them

Posted by: cayden | August 6, 2009 03:24 PM

I hope she faces the same fate she gave those defenceless souls.

Posted by: Karan | August 6, 2009 03:37 PM

I am sure Petland fired them both. After it was brought to Corporates attention. Bad Press!

Posted by: Tiffany Atchley | August 6, 2009 03:42 PM

I myself worked at a Petland in KY back in the early 90's & I loooooove animals. I am in disbelief that this sicko even works for the company. I truly hope she & the Mgr will be repremanded immediately. They have no business working with animals, or even other humans for that matter. Never know..have a bad day and kill the next employee just for fun. : ( Very sad world we live in.

Posted by: no comment | August 6, 2009 03:44 PM

There are not enough words for me to express my true feelings about this sicko and the entire pet shop. Everyone, please scroll way back up to Helen's post. Please take the action she advises which will get results!!! Write letters. Do something so that they will not get away with such horrid inhumanity!

Posted by: Nancy | August 6, 2009 03:44 PM

This is one of the worst stories I have read (lately). This girl could have gotten a job somewhere that was more fitting for her - like in a morgue. Why work in a pet store when you dislike animals? I cannot believe that not only did she get frustrated at them for not dying quickly enough, but then smiled proudly for a photo afterwards. I hope karma brings her face-to-face with uncountable numbers of giant, rabid, starved bunnies.

Posted by: Kelly | August 6, 2009 03:47 PM

If she did this to an animal...it is scary to think what she would do to a child. She and the manager are very sick people and need to be kept away from animals, and small children. I hope they receive professional help soon.

Posted by: Sharon | August 6, 2009 03:49 PM

I lived in Ohio for two years, I moved because I couldn't stand it! I'm an educated person who has lived in major cities domestically and abroad. Ohio was the most ass-backwards state I've ever lived in. . .this image says it all. Most of the people in the Ohio city I lived in were anti-everything/everyone. Cruelty to animals was just one of the issues many of their people suffer from. They are primarily uneducated and ignorant in the ways of the world and environment. One word: Cleveland. I can only imagine what has happened to other animals in that Petland store. I can hardly wait until that woman chooses to reproduce, just what the world needs, more stupid people.

Posted by: Linda | August 6, 2009 03:50 PM

I have one thing to say to Ms Carlisle and her manager. Better be glad you're in Ohio and I'm not.

Posted by: Cheryl D | August 6, 2009 03:50 PM

this story is disturbing! I used to go to that petland and I gave my 2 guinea pigs to them, it's sick to think what might have been done to them :( I hope they send that bitch to jail for the rest of her life! The manager too..join the face book group Prosecute Elizabeth Carlisle to the Fullest Extent of the Law

Posted by: kk | August 6, 2009 03:53 PM

What's next for this "star" employee? Drowning disabled children? Sociopaths and psychopaths only escalate in their killing, she has just begun her journey as a monster, a killer. And Petland created her! They should all be prosecuted before any more innocent lives are lost.

Posted by: Carol | August 6, 2009 03:54 PM

Why don't people write letters to Elizabeth Carlisle via facebook? It's not merely Petland's fault but her's as well for agreeing to such an appalling act.

Posted by: Becky | August 6, 2009 03:55 PM

How sad, I do remember hearing Jeffrey Dahlmer, started with pets & such. This lady needs help big time. I'm proud to say we've never gotten a pet from a pet store. We've always rescued the neighborhood strays. there's enough pets to adopt from human societies. All pets deserve a great life.

Posted by: Courtney | August 6, 2009 03:57 PM

They should bring back hanging!!!

Posted by: Louise | August 6, 2009 03:58 PM

WHAT is WRONG with this psycho woman? She looks EVIL....look at her crazy eyes! Those poor bunnies! I would have given them a home! WTF is wrong with this messed up woman? Why the hell was she hired if she hates animals? She needs to be put away for this!!!!

Posted by: Tara | August 6, 2009 04:02 PM

SHE NEEDS TO BE CHARGED WITH 2 COUNTS OF ANIMAL CRUELTY BECAUSE THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED AND WITH HER BEING PROUD OF THIS HORRIBLE THING JUST SHOWS THAT SHE IS NOT SORRY. PROSECUTE THIS HORRIBLE B**CH! Rest in Peace little bunnies!

Posted by: Jeanell | August 6, 2009 04:03 PM

Looks like this chic was jealous of these rabbits' beautiful hair. The only consolation is that she didn't work in day care or with children. God knows what sort of barbaric behaviour she would have promoted. Stupid fool she and the manager - they know her name and what they've done. Hope Chapel Hill has good animal cruelty laws.

Posted by: meg | August 6, 2009 04:03 PM

I am SHOCKED and SICKENED by this woman and Petland!!! To SMILE after drowning innocent beings...what the HELL is WRONG with her??? Why is she working in a pet store if she doesn't care about animals???

Petland FIRE her NOW!!! And the manager, too, for being so heartless, so uncivilized, so cruel.

Posted by: Soliel | August 6, 2009 04:04 PM

This is so disturbing...on SO many levels. How damaged does a person have to be to do this...document this...smile about this? This girls career with animals or any other living thing for that matter needs to be OVER now. I know my days as a Petland shopper are over...period. No tolerance for the wicked.

Posted by: Laurie | August 6, 2009 04:05 PM

That is just unbelievably sick! You'd think that people who worked in pet stores would have a love of animals and want to ensure their well being... Not watch them suffer in cages and then pose for such a disgusting photo when the animals' unfortunate lives are inhumanely snuffed out. I hope neither of these a$$holes are ever allowed to have pets at home after such a cruel display.

Posted by: Mellowdee | August 6, 2009 04:05 PM

I hope they use her as a poster child for why Petlands all need to be shut down. They are in business solely for profit and care nothing about the animals! PROSECUTE HER TO THE FULL EXTENT OF THE LAW, AND PLEASE PEOPLE DO NOT BUY ANIMALS FROM PETLAND.

Posted by: Pamela Davis | August 6, 2009 04:07 PM

Urge them to stop selling bunnies? Are you kidding me? They need to be closed down!

Posted by: Chad B | August 6, 2009 04:08 PM

This girl has a public profile on facebook. I checked it out... she has kids!! What do you think she's teaching them? This piece of filth needs to be exposed to the fullest so she never works with animals again!! She's sick and I'm sickened with her and Petland.

Posted by: Lee | August 6, 2009 04:09 PM

I am nauseated and sickened by this photo. The smile is evil and like an SS Officer that just killed innocent children...this person will likely murder again..it just depends on the species. Animal or human....this is the haunting question. She is no better than Michael Vick..and what is the Manager here....like hires like. I think the whole place should be shut down. To think of these innocent creatures being forced to fight each other and then drowned is hauntingly like the Vick story. I am appalled.

Posted by: Kathryn Hamilton | August 6, 2009 04:11 PM

I want to know if her and her manager have been arrested for this..This makes me sick. I only hope that someone teaches her a good lesson by beating the sh.... out of her and posting her disgusting, ugly face. The poor mother of this sicko..

Posted by: PETMAD | August 6, 2009 04:11 PM

This can't be real...are you sure? If there is this photo documentation, why isn't she being prosecuted for animal cruelty? Hasn't she been arrested yet?

Posted by: Karen | August 6, 2009 04:13 PM

This is truly unbelievable to me. Fire this cruel girl, her supervisor and anyone else involved. Charge them with animal cruelty!! Sick and disgusting. Shame on you Elizabeth Carlisle!!!

Posted by: Emily | August 6, 2009 04:17 PM

How sick can you get!!!!
If this sicko woman has kids I really hope DHS is sent out soon and her kids are taken away who knows what she does to them.
The manager well he did not show his face to bad really!!!
He also needs to rot in HELL the both of them. This sick B**ch looks really happy with herself. These are Gods creatures. I hope they both pay dearly. I am sickened and so sad. Next it will be babies and kids. Petland you need to shutdown and soon.
Poor baby rabbits at least at peace now. You both will have to account to a higher up one day just remember that.

On behalf of all defenseless animals being abused all over the world, I demand that Elizabeth Carlisle be arrested and jailed to the maximum extend that the law provides for such offenses.

I also demand that she be mentally evaluated. We need to take people like this off the streets.

It is known that people who have the capability of such cruelty towards animals often escalate to other worse offenses towards humans as well.

Posted by: Griffin Page | August 6, 2009 04:30 PM

Well I won't be shopping at Petland anymore and will tell all my friends not to either. This is completely disgusting and both employees should be fired.

Posted by: Jen Taylor | August 6, 2009 04:31 PM

The sad thing is, this happens more often than not in pet stores. 90% of pet stores obtain their animals from mills. And of course, getting a job in a pet shop is the same as getting a job at Wendy's. Anyone can do it and this is the type of people that get hired. May she burn in hell

Posted by: Y.D. JORDAN | August 6, 2009 04:31 PM

Disgusting. Since many women are such babies themselves, it seems even worse when they are cruel to other creatures.

Hope this woman does not escape punishment for what she did.

Posted by: Marcia | August 6, 2009 04:32 PM

I don't see a link to take action, as my PETA e-mail suggested. I want to take action!

Elizabeth Carlisle is a murder and her manager aided and abetted in the murder. Petland promoted it. They all heave blood on their hands.

This is nothing new in pet stores. I happens every day. Never support pet stores that sell live animals, unless they are affiliated with a legitimate rescue group.

Posted by: Susie | August 6, 2009 04:32 PM

This is sick. The manager and the employee should be fired. Those poor animals did no harm to anyone, especially rabbits who cannot defend themselves. I will never shop at Petsmart again!!!!!!!!!!! The store should be fined....

Posted by: Tina | August 6, 2009 04:33 PM

I don't even have the words to describe the sickness I feel right now. She needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the law, and these stores should be shut down. Sickening! What is wrong with people?

Posted by: CC | August 6, 2009 04:35 PM

Wow takes a real big person to kill and abuse a defenseless animal. Way to go LOSER!!!

Posted by: Josie | August 6, 2009 04:35 PM

Whoa that's horrific. We need to remember though this is only the case for some petlands. The ones in canada are run by different people and have way higher standards then others. I have never had a problem with our petland. I hope no other animals have to go through what those animals did. But please remember this is not all petstores.

Posted by: alex | August 6, 2009 04:35 PM

I have never shopped at Petland, but this tells me that not only should they be shut down entirely, the manager should be brought up on charges for allowing this to take place, and the employee should face an extremely lengthy prison term that will not likely happen. It's quite unfortunate that we can't torture her.

Posted by: Jan | August 6, 2009 04:35 PM

I can not even believe this sick S.O.B. and then to say the manager was "kind" to take a pic?! I'd like to see a pic of the two of them behind bars for animal cruelty and then some. What can we do? Has she been prosecuted?

Posted by: Dana | August 6, 2009 04:41 PM

This story is appalling.....and as for those involved......what goes around, comes around.....

Posted by: lesley | August 6, 2009 04:42 PM

Elizabeth and her manager need high fines, jail time, and never be allowed to work with animals in their lifetime. Studies have shown serial killers start out harming and torturing animals. Look at this girls face? Her parents and family should be so ashamed? Cruel....Cruel...Cruel
Jail, fines, aren't enough

Posted by: Gail | August 6, 2009 04:42 PM

PETA needs to take action. Criminal charges need to be brought up against this person and Petland since the manager took the picture. She is a sick individual and what other animals is she torturing before killing them. When an animal attacks a human, we take action. Why is this ok?

Posted by: stacy | August 6, 2009 04:43 PM

that employee should experience what those rabbits experienced. i am completely disgusted.

Posted by: Michelle | August 6, 2009 04:44 PM

Glad to hear she was fired and should be had better be charged with animal cruelty. I can't get her grin out of my mind! May God have sweet revenge on her soul! I will absolutely NOT ever shop at any Petland stores! They obviously don't care who works for them! As a PETA member (Canada and US) and supporter of WWF, Noah's Lost Ark (OH) I am outraged that 'people'(!?) can do such atrocities to animals! These precious little creatures are so sweet. I'm sick with grief!

This line really got to me... "as [I] was swearing at them to just hurry up and die"

It has the hallmarks of a sociopath who has no capacity for empathy. Such a person should NOT be working at a place where they have to care for ANY living thing. It's obvious that they don't care about the quality of life of the animals at Petland.

Posted by: Erin | August 6, 2009 04:52 PM

Karma, the infallible law of cause and effect, will catch up with people like this and then we will not be able to help them become free of the torment they brought upon themselves by being so, so terribly cruel --
a pity the church does not teach that Karma is true, but first they have to have studied and learned in order to stop people like this ! gaby

Petland Corporation Headquarters, based out of Chillicothe, immediately terminated the franchise, located at the Chapel Hill Mall in Akron.

Carlisle has now been charged with two counts of harming a companion animal and is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 17.

All of the remaining animals at the Petland store will be moved to other Petland stores in the Cleveland/Akron area.

Petland also issued a statement (complete statement below), reading in part:

"Petland will in no way, shape or form tolerate any abuse of animals in its care. We are outraged of this gross violation of Petland's animal care standards."

-----COMPLETE STATEMENT FROM PETLAND:

"PETLAND TERMINATES FRANCHISE AGREEMENT

(CHILLICOTHE, OHIO – August 5) – In response to a recent incident regarding the horrific mistreatment of rabbits at the Petland store in Akron, Ohio, Petland, Inc. has terminated the store owner's franchise agreement. Effective immediately the store is closed and will not be reopened. The animals will be immediately removed from store located in the Chapel Hill Mall, which was individually owned and operated by a local franchisee.

Petland will in no way, shape or form tolerate any abuse of animals in its care. We are outraged of this gross violation of Petland's animal care standards.

The investigation is now in the hands is now in the hands of local law enforcement and charges have been filed against the employee.

Petland policy demands that medical treatment and protocol is to be provided and determined by the store's consulting veterinarian and not be undertaken by an employee. Petland policy also dictates that no animal be euthanized in ANY manner by any staff member.

Petland will take any and all action necessary as this does not, in any way, represent the culture and dedication to animals of the thousands of professional Petland employees who provide extraordinary care every day across the country.

Have a Great Day!

Lacey Clever

Program Specialist Petland Inc."

There is seriously something wrong with this B*(@# and her manager. It makes me very angry to see her stupid smile on this pic!!! They both have serious mental issues, anyone who can hurt a poor defenseless animal is not right in the head. I hope they are both charged for the crime they commited and fired!

I can't believe someone that works with animals would do such a thing. They were prob afraid to take them to a vet to have them humainly uthenized. At least give them that peace. But I am sure they didn't want people snooping around. But then why the heck would you post something like that. They should both be fired, charged with animal cruelty and thrown in jail. I just don't see how people can do this type of stuff to animals. Especially rabbits, they are so dog-gon cute.

Posted by: Stacy | August 6, 2009 05:04 PM

PETA, anything you do at this point that does not involve getting the psychopath
Elizabeth Carlisle's serious criminal actions against her and Petland, is a waste of time. She thinks this is a big joke, and you need to wipe the smile off
her grotesque face. It takes a seriously
disturbed person to kill innocent animals and laugh about it. How can we help you get the message to this
freak and Petland? Please tell us what we can do? Thank you!

Posted by: Laura Villasenor | August 6, 2009 05:06 PM

This is what people are ! Cruel and greedy - the things that people enjoy. Why fight terrorist and bad people when you can kill innocent animals to make yourself proud and give yourself meaning. This girl is obviously just taking up food and oxygen from the planet. I would like to see two smoking hot Playboy bunnies drowning her - words will not ever describe what this loser needs. It is Petland's responsibility to seek punishment for this...if the rabbits were injured, there are humaine ways to end their suffering. Absolutely unacceptable practice.

What kind of sick twisted bastard has such little regard for life?!? I hope these people get what they deserve...in jail.

Posted by: Tina Stirpe | August 6, 2009 05:18 PM

Someone needs to take that girl in for a psychological screening! What kind of person would do this!!

Posted by: Eryn | August 6, 2009 05:18 PM

I can't believe people can be so cold blooded. I hope she gets what she deserves. This kind of abuse on animals needs to stop! I don't know what makes some people think that they have the power to harm another living being!!?? Karma is a B**** and she will get what she deserves sooner or later.

Posted by: Ery. | August 6, 2009 05:19 PM

Action will be taken. This Karla-Holmolka-of-Petland was stupid enough to post. I think we ought to stick her head in a bucket and beg her to hurry up and die. I've got the water bucket. People like this are a cruel monstrosity. That whole chain needs to be busted. Thank god for PETA.

Posted by: Jayne Logan | August 6, 2009 05:23 PM

I would fight this girl right now in my professional dress. Fck her! Nasty classless idiot!!!!!! I'd like to get my hands on her sorry azz!!!

Posted by: bridget Richards | August 6, 2009 05:23 PM

She's...smiling? She's proud of her inhumanity? She's eager to expose her sick and demented ways to the rest of the world? This seriously makes me sick. This makes me want to simultaneously puke and cry for those poor, defenseless creatures. Humanity's fate is doomed with the existence of such cruel, heartless bastards.

Posted by: Joanna | August 6, 2009 05:23 PM

I called the Petland Corp Office yesterday, it's been posted on Care2, Facebook and I called PETA yesterday to tell them that this store has been disenfranchised and the girl has been charged with animal cruelty charges. Done.

Posted by: Jan Geren | August 6, 2009 05:23 PM

Petland should should be closed and that employee should be in jail killing innocent animals. Someone has to step in and arrest all the people involved!

Posted by: Linda | August 6, 2009 05:23 PM

This is a horrifying incident, I truly hope and believe that she will pay for this crime. It is a very sad world that we live in, when people take pleasure in causing other beings pain.

Posted by: Carol Silvestri | August 6, 2009 05:24 PM

This girl, who is a waste of human flesh should be charged w/cruelty to animals and should not be allowed to own or work w/animals ever again. This should also apply to all other employees who knew it was happening and did nothing.

There's a special place in hell for people like Elizabeth Carlisle. Does anyone know if she's been charged? At the VERY LEAST I hope Petland fired her! Carlisle and other animal abusers like her need to do actual jail time. A fine is nothing but a slap on the wrist.

Posted by: Susan Parran | August 6, 2009 05:25 PM

Two evil, disgusting, vile, so-called human beings. Please PETA, do something about this. People like these two do not deserve a place on this earth. They both belong in "HELL". Hopefully the two of them will be there soon. It's to bad that people like this cannot be turned over to the public. They would receive what they deserve. All of the Petland stores need to be shut down. This is not their first employee offense.

Posted by: Anne | August 6, 2009 05:26 PM

This is absolutely disgusting. If I ever see this chick in person, I will personally beat her face in. Why would you work with animals at a pet store if you dont like them. I also think her manager should be prosecuted for helping take pictures and make it a game!

Posted by: Ami | August 6, 2009 05:26 PM

I just read that Petland is "the only full-service pet store franchise listed among Entrepreneur's Franchise 500 top retail pet franchises." They are very proud of this and boast about it on their company website. By "top," they mean "one of the most profitable." Caring about animals or even customers has nothing to do with it.

Posted by: Carrie Florer | August 6, 2009 05:28 PM

WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU GET A JOB AT PETLAND IF YOUR JUST GOING TO MURDER THE ANIMALS! this girl is effing crazy and needs to be put in jail and go to hell

Posted by: Tiffany | August 6, 2009 05:31 PM

can she go to jail for this? can petland get in real trouble?? whats going to happen?

Posted by: michelle | August 6, 2009 05:32 PM

This employee and manager should be brought to justice NOW.

Posted by: Suzanne Hedges | August 6, 2009 05:33 PM

That is the saddest thing i have ever seen. How could anyone be so heartless as to hurt a poor innocent animal. If i see any living creature suffer i cry because I'm too sensitive. I just don't understand how a human being could be so cruel. I hope they get what they deserve.

Posted by: Jackie | August 6, 2009 05:33 PM

How can such a disgusting individual be in a position to be in charge of animals. I hope that she will be charged for her crime. Petland should be boycotted. This person is a murderer, there is no other word to describe her. I feel great sorrow for those poor creatures and I hope that this store will be investigated and all animals removed from it.

Posted by: Andrew Mulkani | August 6, 2009 05:35 PM

The rabbits also look thin, under fed. This needs to go national and should be fed to the mainstream news wires. Here in Los Angeles the PETA report on circus elephants was on all the news stations and got major play

Posted by: Vicki Andrew | August 6, 2009 05:35 PM

how vile. i dont see how she did that... how can she sleep at night?
so cruel.

Posted by: shannyn | August 6, 2009 05:36 PM

This is SO deeply disturbing on so many levels. There is a special place in hell for people like this. Why hasn't this store been CLOSED and these employees ARRESTED for animal neglect and cruelty???? The employees involved obviously need psychological help. Please, PETA, do everything you can to get this store chain SHUT DOWN and get these employees arrested, charged, and CONVICTED! The only consolation to this episode is that maybe it will put an end to it.

Posted by: Melinda Moros | August 6, 2009 05:37 PM

Posted by: camila | August 6, 2009 05:37 PM

Posted by: Heather | August 6, 2009 05:37 PM

I have a pet rabbit and the thought of someone taking him and drowning him just makes me sick. he means so much to me, and I feel so horrible that those rabbits at the pet store were killed in such a manner. no animal deserves that, even if they were in pain and injured. there are better less painful ways for these animals to be alleviated of pain.

Posted by: Aubrey | August 6, 2009 05:40 PM

Why is this b*tch working at a Pet Store??? That's how Jeffery Dahmer started out... killing small animals. We all know where this psycho is headed!

Posted by: Mark | August 6, 2009 05:41 PM

This is disgusting!!!! How evil must you be to smile for a picture like this!!! Who in heck would take the picture!!!??? Why would you let the rabbits fight in the first place! I hope this evil woman and her manager are charged for animal cruelty! This is unforgivable! I cried when I saw this! I can only think about the poor rabbits...I might tear up whenever I see my own bunnies....

Posted by: Kelsa Trujillo | August 6, 2009 05:42 PM

This and other stories that PETA seem to uncover are deplorable. I don’t understand that as a nation of educated people there seems to be no remorse/justice for such acts of violence against our furry friends. For example, all the “Michael Vicks” in this world that only get a slap on the hand and than continue to live their lives as if they did no wrong. Where is the justice and humanity? This lady at Petland will continue to live her life beyond her wrongful act, without prosecution and unfortunately the only ones hurt/killed by this are the furry ones. I do thank PETA for trying to provide some justice for the unethical treatment of animals. The best way to hurt stores like Petland is to not shop at their establishment and to spread the word.

Posted by: Andi Strom | August 6, 2009 05:42 PM

This is absolutely HORRIFIC!!! I hope this cruel sociopath will be very harshly punished as well as the shop owner of this store. They ashould serve prison and severe bootcamp !!

Posted by: Jacqueline Wartmann | August 6, 2009 05:42 PM

Funny how there is outrage when the army leaked photos of soldiers smiling near graves and dead bodies, yet people don't see this as the same atrocity. This animals are prisoners in pet stores, the least the workers can do is treat them and their death with some dignity! Ridiculous. and I highly doubt anything will come of her actions

Posted by: Reiko | August 6, 2009 05:42 PM

Who is this creep ? I could say worse than that. What is wrong with so much of the human race. I am ashamed sometimes to be part of it. Something is missing in the brain of such people.

Posted by: Pat Goldberg | August 6, 2009 05:43 PM

Oh my god I don't know whether to throw up or cry! This is so disgusting and the fact that this girl had absolutely no emotional response to taking a LIFE is absolutely horrifying. I LIVE in Ohio and am an absolute animal lover and it makes me want to take a visit and give these people a piece of my mind...or fist!
To post it on facebook is ESPECIALLY disgusting-I should hope everyone she was friends with either deleted her or told her off. This is disgusting, more than anything I've really seen before. Two helpless animals in such bad health; I knew pet stores had a bad rep but I never could've imagined that such cruel acts were ALLOWED to happen like this! Petland needs to bury its head in the sand after this one, I'm definitely for any petition regarding their closure or prevention from selling animals.
This makes me feel incredibly sick, this girl is obviously sadistic, if she can handle taking the lives of two innocent animals, then what the hell else do you think she could be capable of? And the manager who just TOOK A PICTURE? What the hell is wrong with you? There is no excuse for any of this!
Get them out of there and get your whole act together, petland.

Posted by: Sarah | August 6, 2009 05:43 PM

I think most of the comments are missing the point that the animals were half eaten before being drowned? I'm not justifying the drowning but I believe that the intention of Elizabeth and her manager were a mercy killing?

Posted by: Cliff Oliver | August 6, 2009 05:43 PM

This "person" needs to have the same thing she did to the defensless rabbits done to her. As one person has already stated, she should be glad she's there and I'm not.

Posted by: Dana | August 6, 2009 05:47 PM

Elizabeth Carlisle needs to be charged with felony animal cruelty and never be allowed to work with animals or own any of her own.
I do believe she is evil, anyone that can drown helpless animals in their care and grin from ear to ear has no conscience or empathy.
I surely hope she was fired after this happened!

Posted by: Amber | August 6, 2009 05:51 PM

Animals are so vulnerable in these situations because not everybody who applies for jobs working with animals actually cares about animals. Some of them just do it for the paycheck and couldn't care less about the animal's well being.

People like her are should be thrown out with the trash.

Posted by: SR | August 6, 2009 05:52 PM

This is disgusting. I raise rabbits and would never consider selling to a pet store. We have areas here in Ohio, where, after Easter, all the "cute" little bunnies are turned into the wild to fend for themselves. Even though we eat our rabbits, I would never kill them in such an inhumane fashion.

Posted by: Lisa | August 6, 2009 05:53 PM

Petland has had so many problem with all animals, they should no longer be allowed to have any animals. I assume this scumbag and the manager who took the picture and allowed this to happen are being prosecuted to the full extent of the law !!!

Posted by: Steve Hunter | August 6, 2009 05:53 PM

I don't get it, innocent people get murdered almost on a daily basis by psychos and serial killers, yet these same killers don't end up killing Monsters like Elizabeth Carlisle. Why? Petland should be shut down, Sadists like Carlisle should be incarcerated Permanently, and "managers" who allow this should also be brought to justice! Where is the law enforcement, where are the courts, and where is the accountability?

Posted by: Ida | August 6, 2009 05:56 PM

Yes some people are really sick in this world. What they do to animals they most likely do to kids/children etc. Maybe have to start doing eye for an eye type thing with these people. Like that idiot vick and his fighting dogs-WHAT MORONS. When those that run over animals also in their cars, i vow if i catch them to make them get in front of my car and give them the same oportunity to get out of the way, or will run over them same way. We have to start doing like they did in the old west with the horse thieves. Oh what Saint Francis of Assisi thinks when these things happen. Patron Saint of all animals. Yes they will have to give a reason why they did these things in the end. All creatures great and small we must respect their lives.

Posted by: Dave | August 6, 2009 05:58 PM

This is truly an incident of the devil acting on earth. she is one of the most disturbing, disgusting, most horrible "things" I have ever read about. She is not even worth calling a 'human' bc humans have feelings and I cannot fathom that this 'thing' would be allowed to be near animals, and much less the store manager allow and participate in the sadistic act. They will all get theirs in the end when they burn and rot in hell. I pray the animals can finally be at peace in heaven

Posted by: missy | August 6, 2009 05:58 PM

WHAT THE F**K?! why isn't this person in jail? clearly there is evidence of her f**ked up actions. i don't understand why you would work at a pet store and drown bunnies for fun.

Posted by: Sarah | August 6, 2009 05:59 PM

She is sick in the head. If a child kills an animal in suck nature they are considered mental case and hospitalized. She has committed a crime and she must pay up and do the time. She also needs to be fired along with anyone else who knew about everything that was going on. PETA go get her!!!!!!!

This kind of behavior is mental illness! The smile and eyes show it all. How a (supposed)human being can take pleasure in another animal's death is completely beyond me. I hope her dreams are tormented for the rest of her life. There needs to be a law protecting every single animal in every pet shop, home and farm so phychos like this can't be seen taking pleasure in the extermination of innocents. Does that pet store do any kind of investigating or interviewing before hiring? Is there some kind of trial period where the employees are watched and evaluated? If not, there needs to be!!!

Petland needs to be more careful who they hire as employees, yeah they make money....at the expense of this atroceous crime?? come on!!

Posted by: Jo | August 6, 2009 06:05 PM

She needs to be drowned! I hope Petland is planningto press charges. Is this being investigated by the police??

Posted by: Amy | August 6, 2009 06:05 PM

This is hard to hear about, but necessary to educate the public as to why we should avoid large, corporate chain stores that become wealthy from the sale of these animals.

Posted by: LJ | August 6, 2009 06:11 PM

This is so so disgusting, the people must be prosecuted. She is a danger not only to animals but to any child, or any person with-out defenses, that she comes into contact.

Posted by: richard | August 6, 2009 06:13 PM

I took the time to email Frank Difatta, President of Petland and describing how horrified I was of this event, and that the company needs to stop selling rabbits immediately. Although this particular franchise was terminated, I'm still concerned about the best practices of this company.

Posted by: Steve DeHaart | August 6, 2009 06:14 PM

Posted by: Sarah Saunders | August 6, 2009 06:15 PM

That girl and her manager should be charged and made an example of. How someone could do that, have zero conscious about it then post it on facebook boggles my mind and is clearly lacking in any human decency. As harsh as this sounds I really do think that the punishment for animal cruelty should fit the crime. Then and only then will cowards such as this realize the gravity of the situation, and send a much needed message to other people worldwide.

Posted by: PK | August 6, 2009 06:16 PM

We read about crazy men all the time but, sadly, we are now learning there are just as many cruel, sadistic women out there too. The grin on this woman's face is detestable and frightening...one of the scariest photographs I have ever seen of a man OR a woman.

Posted by: Hannah McCullough | August 6, 2009 06:16 PM

If everyone contacted all pet stores that sell live animals and tell them you will never shop there......also ask all your friends to do the same....maybe they will stop and defenseless creatures would not have to go through what those poor rabbits did......may that b**ch rot in hell.............

Posted by: Sandra Willis | August 6, 2009 06:16 PM

Posted by: Jennifer Singer | August 6, 2009 06:21 PM

I am a PETA member and appreciate their work. I am increasingly aggravated, however, at these types of horror stories which do not provide any links for action. Why have you not published the contact info for the store? the corporation? What followup has been done by PETA to ensure that the manager & employee are charged with animal cruelty? Showing this type of cruelty without indicating actions taken by PETA are annoying at best.

Posted by: Bonnie Towles | August 6, 2009 06:22 PM

What kind of people are you?
May you burn in hell, or worse, meet the same fate as the helpless creatures to whom you have caused so much suffreing. Shame, shame on you. I have shopped at Petland for my housefull of pets before, but will NEVER do so again. I would appeal to your moral conscience, but apparently Petland hasn't one.
I'll vote with my feet, instead, and put a dent in your bottom line, and be sure to share this horror with all of my contemporaries. ou are no better than the thugs at Abu Graib.

Posted by: bridget blair | August 6, 2009 06:28 PM

Taking pleasure in animal suffering is barbaric. How do "human" beings find not only joy, but obvious pride in their own ruthlessness, is inconceivable. Let's not forget animal torture is a strong indicator of future violent behavior towards people. Do we really want these monsters amongst us. My heart is so broken for these innocent creatures, yet thankful their life of pain will no longer continue. I'd like to wish the same fate on these employees, but that would make me one of them. I just hope there is some intervention before she proudly demonstrates her cruelty on other creatures, people included.

That girl is SICK to be so happy after drowning two innocent and helpless bunnies. She should be ashamed of herself! Frankly, that picture of her makes me sick to my stomach!

Posted by: Katherine Lopez | August 6, 2009 06:32 PM

THAT GIRL IS SICK. THIS IS A CRIME??? WE NEED TO BOYCOTT ALL PETLANDS FOR THIS. ALL THE STORES NEED TO LEARN A HARD MESSAGE THAT WERE NOT GOING TO STAND FOR THIS AT ALL. AND THIS IS ONLY ONE THING THAT WAS CAUGHT.

What a sick human being!!! To kill two bunny's and then be proud of the fact that she did. She should have to pay for her actions, this is sick, sick, sick!!!!!!!!!!! She shouldnt be allowed animals for the rest of her life!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Candice | August 6, 2009 06:35 PM

This made headlines in two of the local papers in the area that this happened in as I live in this area. I had already written an email petition for PETA when I first heard about this. As a result of all the letters, phone calls and petitions signed and forwarded to Petland's home base in Chillicothe, They have shut that store down and are removing the animals to other Petland stores. That ignorant, sick girl has a court date August 17 in Akron, Ohio but only on two misdemeanor charges. Even through I think it should be a felony. I agree that this person needs help and should never ever be allowed to work with animals or small children of any kind. She has to be a very sick person without feelings or caring I hate to think she even lives in the same area as I do. All Petland stores need shut down if for no other reason then that they buy those poor puppies from puppy mills,

Posted by: Doris Schoning | August 6, 2009 06:35 PM

Of course this girl is sick. And both of them have mental problems and should be seriously treated. A normal person would not be that glad for provoking animal's death or suffering.

Posted by: Suellen | August 6, 2009 06:35 PM

WOW!!! I hope this sadistic waste of a human realizes that THOUSANDS of animal lovers will know about this!!! I wouldn't want to be in her shoes!!! She'll deserve what she gets:)

Posted by: Rosalinde | August 6, 2009 06:36 PM

how horribly disturbing. this girl has to be sick, and the manager who took the photo is sick too. petland should be a bit more careful about who they hire, a mistake that just cost them a customer for life.

Posted by: jeanette | August 6, 2009 06:38 PM

Will there be any law changing in the near future for all of our animal welfare and protection in the USA and our neighboring countries in the near future? Are there any law adjusters who read this? Any United Nations or congress people who can step up and defend GOD's creature? If any ideas, please let me know.. Thank You and let's help our animal friends asap... These people need to be sentenced to life in prison!

Posted by: Gina G | August 6, 2009 06:38 PM

Horrible picture! There must be something really wrong with this girl's mind to hold bunnies like this.
I wish the companies like this never existed.

Posted by: Luda | August 6, 2009 06:39 PM

Yet one more cruelty to animals in the USA, we thankfully DO NOT have a branch of 'PETSTORE' in the UK, if we did, it would now certainly be CLOSED,as we have a lucky fighter for all pets called the RSPCA-ROYAL SOCIETY PREVENTION of CRUELTY to ANIMALS, I amm ashamed that any country's gevernment would allow this person (not a human) to work with animals, and a so called pet shop to be allowed to sell animals, thank GOD i.m not an american............

Posted by: Paul White | August 6, 2009 06:39 PM

I thought at first what a psycho but now this is making me get tears in my eye's due to the fact that there are so many people out there that don't understand a living thing is a living thing regardless of what it is. A furry cute bunny though, what a lady! Do you suppose she is reading these posts? Would someone like that really care? I feel sorry for her. We call that "white trash".

Posted by: sharon butler | August 6, 2009 06:39 PM

This will be the worst thing I will ever write, but I wish someone would go to her house and do to her all of the awful things that were done to these poor, innocent, loving bunnies.
Animals are the most abusedmembers of society. Damn her to hell.

Posted by: Suzanne Wright | August 6, 2009 06:40 PM

We should hire mercenary for this kind of people. I believe in "eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth". The world is mad, it needs some drastic changes.

Posted by: Sabrina | August 6, 2009 06:40 PM

I am relieved to see so many comments posted from kind people. This is the most deplorable case of animal cruelty I have seen since Michael Vick.
Jan Geren; sister, you did some strong work on this! Be proud of yourself. If each of us takes action when we see things like this, we can make it stop.

Posted by: Teri | August 6, 2009 06:41 PM

This is so sad. I can't believe someone would do something so cruel and sick and then brag about it! She deserves to have the same thing done to her!

Posted by: Stefanie | August 6, 2009 06:41 PM

Wow, what a sick person to do this. This disgusts me so much and I really hope all involved in this horrible act get what they deserve. Karma is a b*tch, as are these Petland employees, and they will get in trouble somehow for what they did!!

Posted by: Megan Power | August 6, 2009 06:42 PM

This girl is completely heartless. I just wish that there were harsher laws for animal abuse! Put her in the big house and throw away they key!!

Posted by: June | August 6, 2009 06:42 PM

Thank you PETA for showing us the inside story of some of these places. The bad Karma she has brought upon herself will never be enough. I hope she never has children of her own. God help our planet!

Posted by: Lisa | August 6, 2009 06:46 PM

This is truely horrible, the only upside to this is petland is once again EXPOSED and soon will be BANNED from selling livestock WORLDWIDE ! .. this will put a good wrench in the puppy mill sicko's out there as well to lose their main 'contractor's' for their 'products'.
I have nothing good to say about petland and refuse to shop there ever.
I am waiting to see in the news PETLAND BANNED FROM SELLING ANIMALS IN ALL BRANCHES WORLD WIDE, and all livestock to be sheltered until rehabilitated to good health and into good homes. They certainly deserve no less than that. Keep THAT visual in mind, and soon it'll be a good day! Lets work toward 11-11-09..marking a symbolic end of the battles for tormented animals in petland hell! AMEN!

So glad tht PETA r doing sumthing about this. xx

Posted by: Kate | August 6, 2009 06:48 PM

I'm from Australia, and cannot believe that two such twisted, uncaring, and cruel people can be employed by a so called pet shop!! More concerning is how they do and will treat their own children????? I would suggest they be mentally assessed for impaired functioning and hopefully prevented from working with children and animals ever again. It would be good if they could also be prevented from having children of their own, but guess the laws do not stretch that far. Sick, sick people who will reap the consequences of their disgusting behaviour.

News Article: AKRON, Ohio -- The franchise agreement has been terminated for an Akron Petland store because of "horrific mistreatment of rabbits."

Petland officials said effective immediately the Chapel Hill Mall store is closed and will not reopen.

The animals have been removed also.

Petland officials said that the store "in no way, shape or form tolerate any abuse of animals in its care. We are outraged of this gross violation of Petland's animal care standards."

The allegations surfaced because of a Facebook photo showing an employee who bragged about drowning two injured rabbits.

The employee, 20-year-old Liz Carlisle, of Ravenna, has been charged with two counts of cruelty to animals is to secheduled for arraignment on Aug. 17.

Senior Humane Officer Tim Harland of the Humane Society of Greater Akron said Carlisle told investigators it was her decision to drown the rabbits.

Chillicothe-based Petland calls the incident "horrific mistreatment" and says it prohibits employees from euthanizing any animal.

What a crazy, stupid, b**ch! I can't understand why anyone would do that to those poor, little bunnies. How utterly sad......

Posted by: Dawn B.Spivey | August 6, 2009 06:49 PM

I am disgusted beyond words to see something so evil. I am an animal lover and have 5 babies and I love them dearly (and spoil them). I just cannot fathom how anyone could do something so outrageous, so sickening as this. I'd like to know what her parents think about this or are they animal killers too? There are no words to even convey how I feel about this evil deed. The trouble is that animal abuse is just a misdemeanor and it should be a felony since they are defenseless animals put in the care of people. I am so distressed about this. This "person" is a nutcase.

Posted by: Peri Mcmillan | August 6, 2009 06:49 PM

I am so disturbed by this story, but yet-as more and more become so insensitive to the world and all it's creature it has become a serious issue with many states doing little to nothing for those who prey on our animal friends. Thank God in TX cruelty to animals has been giving stiff punishments for the injustice that they do to all God's creatures and even have started to file animal cruelty charges for those who leave their animals in hot cars or when ties outside with no access to water, food and shelter. All the people involved should be brought to justice and that store should be closed immediately.........

Posted by: Antoinette | August 6, 2009 06:49 PM

i seriously hope that people like her get punished for their crimes...

Posted by: ioanna | August 6, 2009 06:50 PM

I would suggest that the owner should sue her and her manager for damaging the reputation of his/her store to such an extent that it had to be closed. I would suggest it except that I doubt a person of this intelligence will never have too many nickels to rub together anyway.

Posted by: Jesse | August 6, 2009 06:50 PM

Please someone tell me that these people got what they deserved?

I am so appalled and upset I don't know where to begin. I will NEVER EVER shop at Petland again and I will make sure all my friends do the same. I plan to stop in and tell the manager what a disgusting place it is and that they've lost a customer for good. Do these low-lives here and in Ohio get to see these comments? And why aren't we writing letters through PETA to the store ownership?

Posted by: Susan Blankman | August 6, 2009 07:04 PM

This should be taken to a local authority and denounce these acts. The famous "Entrepeneur" should receive a copy of this video, as well as any other entity that deals with them. What is the use of us posting our protests, if the local organizations to defend these poor creatures don't present a formal accusation and companies that do business with Petland continue to do so in spite of this horror ? There are laws against these acts! Shame on Petland if they don't take public action on this and its employees who participate! I feel sorry for them, not being able to feel like a decent human being and having a heart that feels no remorse. I don't envy them!

Posted by: Cary Diaz | August 6, 2009 07:05 PM

That dumb B**ch with her ugly grin, nothing makes me more upset then this, it's just sick and I hope that nasty freak pays for what she did.

Posted by: Amanda Tempel | August 6, 2009 07:05 PM

The girl in the picture looks really young... and i can imagine that she thinks this is okay because she is doing what she's been ordered to do. Those that deal with torture or death on a daily basis often treat their victims as objects (just look at the thousands of folk employed in factory farming and the 'animal industry' for proof of that).
I'm sure she'll feel sick to the pit of her stomach when she actually realises that she has killed! - not that late remorse will help the mutilated and dead rabbits.
As for the manager and the company who orchestrated the death - i have nothing but loath, disgust and extreme sadness at the thought that they could deal in life and death with such flippant abandon.
I am constantly moved to despair at the acts of human cruelty brought about through neglect, lack of compassion, an ideology of species superiority, and plain outright capitalist greed.

Drowning an animal in appalling pain, with no hope of access to a vet, might, under extremely rare circumstances, be supportable. However, at the very least, one should learn how to break a neck cleanly if one considers that at any time in the future one would ever need to do this. Petland could easily have called immediately for a vet, who, given the description of the injuries, may have had their work cut out for them, but would at least have been able to save both rabbits - who were males, I'm assuming. If the injuries were irreversible, at least a vet, who would no doubt have arrived within minutes for such an emergency call (any of the twenty or so vets within my city would have) could have put them down humanely. Most mammals go into a similar form of traumatic shock after such injuries, they wouldn't have been aware of much had they been separated and made as comfortable as possible: much of the trauma medicine guidelines for humans apply to other mammalian animals. I fully agree with many of the posts here; jail time equivalent to the same injuries to humans is required. No-one is going to blame someone for having run something over when they had no way of avoiding it, whether it is human or another animal. I don't see why people see raising animals to the level of people in terms of treatment will be that problematic. It might at least do something for those seeking legal euthanasia!

Posted by: Dee King | August 6, 2009 07:06 PM

This is sick and pathetic. This store should immediately be shut down and this employee and her supervisor terminated immediately, this is disgraceful.

Posted by: susan | August 6, 2009 07:07 PM

So many others have said my thoughts and more. ALL of you PETA and animal supporters are correct with your thoughts on the actions this "beast" inflicted. I am a believer in karma and she WILL get hers along with the manager for making the action acceptable. It looks like the Petland corporate is doing what needs to be done. The store is shut down and the employees fired and facing crimanl charges.
And that leads me to another topic, animals in cages for sale. They are put on display for freaky people to poke their filthy hands into and even pick them up to hold. How traumatic it must be for those little lives to be handled and put right back into a cage!
Anyway just sorry to see such disrespectful action from those people. The cruelty just sickens me! I concur with the others!

Posted by: Angelia | August 6, 2009 07:07 PM

You are SICK! I have never shopped Petland nor would I.

This is sickening! It's EVIL! And the lowlife scumbag who committed this terrible act of cruelty is herself an EVIL and psychotically-sick (even demon-possessed) person with no heart or compassion in her at all! I can imagine how she would score as a trainer at Ringling - very badly (I can imagine)! She needs to be locked up in a solitary cell AND a straitjacket forever! (May I suggest: Guantanamo - with the keys to her cell thrown into the Carribbean!)

You know what I find disturbing? That there are around 300 comments here for rabbits. If only you cared as much as you do for rabbits when children died, when little girls are forced to be prostitutes. But no... That's not serious. Rabbits dying by an obviously disturbed and stupid girl is... I feel sorry for the rabbits, but I feel more sorry for the indifference of the world in front of real problems.

she should be charged with animal cruelty. Lord take care of these unhuman people. Lord close all petlands and I myself hope the worst for these devil people.....May God change your life and your minds....I cannot stand people who are cruel to animals. Just the other day I saw a dog in a hot car in front of a doctors office so I went in and ask out loud who's dog is in the hot heat? of course no one said nothing. So I called the sheriff and he came down and got the animal out and told me the owners will not do that again.

This person should be put in prison.

Posted by: Councillor David Potts (UK) | August 6, 2009 07:26 PM

This is psychopathic behavior. These people belong behind bars for the safety of animals, as well as society. I would not want anyone who takes this much sadistic pleasure in killing by torture living in my neighborhood, or anywhere near children.

Posted by: Tenaya Egbert | August 6, 2009 07:26 PM

If someone would do this to animals and think it's funny there is no doubt they could harm a human life (maybe her child one day) and not care either. Petland is a disgusting place and this isn't the first time they have been reported in a negative way. It's about time people wake up and stop shopping there!!!!!!

Posted by: Lisa | August 6, 2009 07:26 PM

This is disgusting. We need to email and call Petland and get this on youtube and the news. CNN wastes time on corporate jet sales as if it were important.

Posted by: Peter Mancini | August 6, 2009 07:26 PM

Unbelievable

As an owner of 7 bunnies, I am heart broken to see this picture. I tpically do not shop at Pet Land, but will never give them any business.
and will discourage my friends and family from going there. Rabbits depend on the kindness of others to survive, and each has its own personality.

Posted by: Nan | August 6, 2009 07:30 PM

Petland needs to be boycotted. This is one sick woman working for a corporate animal clearing house. Petco is no different. Close them all.

Posted by: Jeffrey Smith | August 6, 2009 07:31 PM

i hope there are criminal penalties imposed on Petland and this disgusting woman (a very loose term for a human such as Elizabeth Carlisle). What an evil, evil act. I hope the suffering she imposed on these poor little rabbits haunts her everday of her life and one day she is able to feel their pain and anguish (this is big ask as she is obviously devoid of feeling). Close down Petland and impose hefty fines on Elizabeth and Petland. Low disgusting
vile place that it is.i am sickened by this.

Posted by: angela | August 6, 2009 07:31 PM

This bitch is lucky she dosen't live in Oregon.
I know quite a few people who would love to take her disgusting sadistic ass out permanently!!!

Posted by: R. Wolfdreamer | August 6, 2009 07:32 PM

If this is how animals are treated!!!! What would she do to children??? This is todays generation lazy thoughtless, and no heart, for animals, humans or herself!
How sad, to think there are people out there that love and care for animals and would give anything to even be employed!

Posted by: J | August 6, 2009 07:32 PM

This is very sad but what can we expect when women kill their own unborn children. To this individual life is not sacred. Our world says a lot about how much we do not care. Look at the way people treat other people. For some of these people drowning a rabbit is just part of the job.

All life is precious. Not one life should be made light of.

Posted by: Lynn | August 6, 2009 07:32 PM

Thank you channel 3 for exposing this story! How shameful that this would happen. All pet dealer and those who claim to provide a humane exxperience for animals should be investigated! I called a survey to PetSmart about our local groomers and they responded immediately and got rid of them! I say good for PetSmart! Stay away from Petland. and I say voice your opinon when given the chance. This woman is sick and disturbed! I am disturbed!

Posted by: Margaret Lovick | August 6, 2009 07:38 PM

Posted by: alicia Hecht | August 6, 2009 07:40 PM

I love Peta, and I am so happy to see everyone following up proactively. I also sent emails to Petland and Akron Police. It feels good knowing there are many, many people in this world who care about animals.

Posted by: Lucia | August 6, 2009 07:42 PM

totally sick the store should be closed down

Posted by: jade | August 6, 2009 07:43 PM

I think This Elizabeth Carlisle should be put away for a long time, along with the manager and the key thrown away, and have this done to them so they understand better what this feels like and all the stress that goes with it. Second I think that ANY and ALL pet store that sells ANY animal should be regulated and heavy fines and jail time put on anyone that abuses ANY of the animals that they are in charge of caring for. This is sick, and down right cruel and I hope they both get what is really coming to them both!!!

Posted by: Donna Oglesby | August 6, 2009 07:43 PM

This truly breaks my heart! I just can't fathom how someone could do this. I am speechless because I think this is so mean and goes beyond cruelty. Let's hope karma finds her and repays her for this cruel crime! So very sad!!!

Posted by: Jason | August 6, 2009 07:44 PM

We should go to the store and boycot etc, and make sure they know as to why, however the head office of petland needs to fire both staff and make sure it goes on future employment files so they can never work again !!!

Posted by: Steve Walker | August 6, 2009 07:44 PM

This girl seems kind of messed up...if you don't like bunnies don't work at a pet store. Isn't this like something that a ten year old boy who grows up to be a serial killer would do?? lol seriously...

Posted by: Ashley | August 6, 2009 07:45 PM

Have just had it with the scum that abuse animals.
These losers should NOT be allowed to reproduce and this type of crime should be a FELONY!

Posted by: Robin | August 6, 2009 07:46 PM

I'm totally shocked. That is just wrong. I hope she suffers for this. Animal cruelty laws need to be changed so sick, sadistic people like her really pay for their actions. It's obvious she did this for her own personal amusement. This makes me so sad.

Posted by: Sarah | August 6, 2009 07:47 PM

This is absolutely wrong, and completely unacceptable! What is going to happen to the girl that did this? There should be no expections or way around her punishment for what she pulled! And the "manager" had the will and basically was ok with all of this and even took a picture? who are these people. Action needs to be taken.

Posted by: Brian Merchan | August 6, 2009 07:48 PM

Posted by: jasdlkfj | August 6, 2009 07:51 PM

I firmly believe that ANYONE who abuses, neglects, tortures or even does worse things to animals, should as punishment, have the same exact cruel act done to them. This way they will know how the poor animal felt. This also goes for this b*tch who does not even deserve the right to be called human and her manager. Her manager obviously saw nothing wrong with what the b*tch was doing or else she would stopped it.

Posted by: Lori Patton | August 6, 2009 07:51 PM

Not only is this sick, but the people who committed this crime are VERY sick and should be put away for the criminally insane.

Posted by: Susan Misa | August 6, 2009 07:52 PM

That stupid girl must be insane, what is wrong with her? And how is she working at Petland? Hurting defenseless animals makes that monster even more sick.

Posted by: Eylin | August 6, 2009 07:53 PM

Has she been charged? Has the store been called on this? Anyone know? If not, I will right away call the police in Akron, but some emails suggest it has been done

Posted by: barbara | August 6, 2009 07:53 PM

Ok this Elizabeth Carlisle obviously is a sicko but what about the store manager? Has she been fired for allowing this torture to go on?

Posted by: Jennifer Jackson | August 6, 2009 07:54 PM

Reading the article about the girl who worked in the Petland petstore made me so sick I wanted to throw up. Someone wrote that the girl in the picture had a sweet smile. I think she has the smile of a sadistic killer. Right now it's helpless little animals like those precious little rabbits who never stood a chance, but if something is not done about her or her manager and the petstore they work in, this sweet little girl will move up to bigger things. They both have to be taken off the streets before they have a chance to kill again.I think that the wrong animals are in cages.

Posted by: Gina Berdichevsky | August 6, 2009 07:54 PM

animals should not be sold anywhere, and this is the reason why. You know what goes around comes around, I think maybe you elisabeth need to stay away from water!!!! Close all petstore's that sell animals.

Posted by: susan ronzello | August 6, 2009 07:55 PM

This is absolutely appalling. What steps are being taken to prosecute this evil woman, her superiors and Petland?

Posted by: Tina | August 6, 2009 07:55 PM

This is one sick minded and cold hearted B****!!! Who needs to be dealt with or have some sort of consequences for what she has done. To think that her manager was the one who actually took this awful picture, they too should be held responsible in taking part of such a vicious act, or even for thinking it was amusing because that is far from what it is.

Posted by: Thelma DIaz | August 6, 2009 07:56 PM

Posted by: Catherine O Neill | August 6, 2009 07:56 PM

You should never be given that privlidge ever again in your little meaningless life!!! I hope you go to jail, and one day you will answer to it by the one above!! This place should be closed down!!!!!!!

Posted by: mairi | August 6, 2009 07:59 PM

Posted by: Catherine O Neill | August 6, 2009 08:01 PM

these bunnies should have not gone through this. if she can destroy these bunnies, what is she able to do to another person. not to mention a child. people who harm animals will also in time harm a person. if there was something wrong with them, they should of received medical attention.

Posted by: lml | August 6, 2009 08:01 PM

Please tell me something will be done about this. I can only hope, but probably only a slap on the wrist (if that) until she moves on to humans. It terrifies me that I live in a world with people like this!

Posted by: Monica Rizzo | August 6, 2009 08:02 PM

In what universe would this horrific behavior be funny? I am not a violent person, but I would like to have a little "time" with this sick b...h, one on one; let's see if she can hurt someone who can defend herself. I love my animals; they are all sweet and priceless, and I have an adorable bunny that is glad to see me come home, plays with toys, and loves yogurt drops. This piece of s..t is a waste of oxygen. How repulsive. She is why I prefer animals to most humans.

This little girl should be ashamed of herself... This is not a behaviour that fits a human being.... Rather primitive and criminal ...

Posted by: Marian Chaudri | August 6, 2009 08:03 PM

Well I think this PetLand should be shut down and the workers should ALL be convicted of animal cruelty! But as for all petLands not selling animals I dont agree with. I think that with no pet stores a lot of animals will be euthanized do to the breeders not being able to sell their babies. But they do need to lower their prices because they are so outrageous!

Posted by: Marian Chaudri | August 6, 2009 08:04 PM

there's nothing wrong with selling domesticated animals, but people need to realize that with that power there is present an ethical responsibility. This is both horrifying and apalling, and it because of people like this that we must give animals a voice by standing up for them and punishing people like this by the means we are given through the law. This saddens me and it sickens me that this girl was hired to take care of these pets before they found a home and instead tortured them for self-serving pleasure and unethically murdered them with the support of her boss. How dare these people be allowed to continue with these jobs?

Posted by: sunnie october | August 6, 2009 08:04 PM

Yes prosecute these people and the company. Better yet design posters and parade out the front of the stores displaying them. Companion animals are not a for profit industry. By the way rabbit breeders destroy thousands of baby rabbits chasing a particular colour or shape.

Posted by: Coral Giffin | August 6, 2009 08:04 PM

I can not understand how someone can do this to one of God's creatures. i can tell you this, i live in Akron, Ohio and this petland is shut down now.

Posted by: lisa | August 6, 2009 08:06 PM

Posted by: Aleah Hansen | August 6, 2009 08:10 PM

This is an example of what some people in society have shown as acceptable behavior. How can the torture and killing of an innocent animal be fun. I can only hope that some day she feels the same pain that she has caused. PETA please help.

Are these monsters going to jail or what? THEY HAVE TO BE CHARGED for it!

Posted by: Adriane | August 6, 2009 08:11 PM

First off People should get together in towns were petlands are across the country and protest them and not shop in them at all Untill they first fire theses 2 sick people then 2rd stop selling any kind of animals. And then and Only then maybe start shoping again in a petland. O and they need to bring charges against the two of them. This is a Horrible inhuman act and should not go unpunish!!!!!!!

Posted by: Ed | August 6, 2009 08:12 PM

I am not even surprised by what this sick sadistic person did to these bunnies. Look at the world we live in..people do this and worse on a daily basis and the government does not care one bit, they get a slap on the hand and off they go. This girl and her boss should go to jail for what they did..and petland should be fined and not allowed to sell animals anymore. No pet store should sell animals. Makes me wonder what kind of parents she had. My children, now grown, were taught to love and respect animals.

Posted by: Ana | August 6, 2009 08:18 PM

PetLand has a history of being neglectful with animals. Many times I have seen cockatiels and larger parrots in cages so small they can hardly turn around.

Please, everyone: Use your cell phone cameras and document this neglect and abuse. Post it wherever you can online and put these "sellers" out of business.

Oh gee lets torture an innocent animal cos we are the weak dumb morons of the human race!! Thanks Peta for trying to stop this shitty stuff! And to all the cruel morons out there that even get off on reading these comments... Go dig a very deep hole and jump in.... just for fun!! DUMB ARSES!

Isn't there laws against this kind of grotesque cruelty????Any kind of prosecution for this sick individual??? I am not going to even call her a human!!! if the case that she even gets a little 25.00 fine or a slap on the wrist, its because WE failed them, the helpless animals... because we din't SPEAK THE F*CK UP!!!!!!!!!!Remember its the MAJORITY!!!!!THEY HAVE NO VOICE PEOPLE. please help them all out. you know who to write to, to call, and to petition to!!!!!! can you imagine what this elizabitch carlisle would do to a innocent helpless child (god forbid she is or will ever become a mother) knowing what she has done to helpless innocent rabbits???? i truly believe this didn't even phase her. not with that smile on her face. this is sooooo sick.

This girl is a sick and heartless b**ch. I can hardly believe this happened. Unforgivable and evil! I always thought pet stores were filled with people that love animals. Now that I know different I am appalled and discusted beyond words. I think there needs to be a full investigation of all pet shops, and then strict sentences need to be imposed for those who commit such offenses!!

Posted by: Ted Ringgold | August 6, 2009 08:31 PM

We all need not shop ever again at Petland. This will say more than anything. Tell everyone you know to never darken there doors. Bad,evil and scary is what comes to my mind to say the least.

Posted by: PJE | August 6, 2009 08:32 PM

This is sick, evil, horrible and wrong. And it is what happens thousands of times every day in factory farms to unwanted baby chicks who are thrown into garbage cans alive. And to many other kinds of animals raised for human eating who are sick or badly injured. They aren't necessarily drowned, but killed in horrible and inhumane ways. ALL inhuman killing should stop! I think if all of you who are writing really knew how farm animals are treated, you would all stop eating their flesh! Visit veganoutreach.com

Posted by: Linda Busser | August 6, 2009 08:32 PM

Shut all of Petland stores ! Taking them to the court and get fine and jail time.

Posted by: Karen Lerman | August 6, 2009 08:33 PM

I just don't get it. We're living in 2009, people are intelligent enough to understand that abuse is wrong, don't they?! It pisses me off that the government in most parts of the world don't take animal cruelty, as I believe it's right to punish people who abuse and murder - and not just people who abuse and murder other humans, but who also abuse and murder animals.

Posted by: Kylie Pajaczek | August 6, 2009 08:33 PM

Im pretty new with Peta and all. But im seriously disguisted with this woman and this store. These person have to be charged and justices needs to be served. I cannot believe it. This justs motivates me to help any animal I can.

Posted by: Cheryl | August 6, 2009 08:34 PM

i hope all the outrage expressed will not be a substitute for action. find an akron area animal rights group, or start one if needed, and start protest demonstrations asap. you can use the photo as a very memorable protest sign.

PETA and other organizations will help you with material and advice for your project.

don't wait for someone else to do something. you are the one the animals need. start now.

I hope that one day, even if it's after we have died, that we will all be held accountable for every action we take during the one life we are given the chance to live. I am saddened by this story and the insanely cruel girl who thought it was "cool" to do such a thing.

Posted by: Angela Shomin | August 6, 2009 08:40 PM

she is totally sick to do such a thing.please terminate her petland. she should be jobless.

Posted by: kay | August 6, 2009 08:42 PM

how can she pose with these dead rabbits with a smile on her face she is a horrible person, she should be in jail
how would she like it if some one did her that way, would it be funny then?

Posted by: Debra Whinnery | August 6, 2009 08:43 PM

This lady must be sick or mental. I don't have words to explain how disgusting it is. But there is justice in this world and she will pay the price for her actions.

Posted by: Maristela Portella | August 6, 2009 08:44 PM

Don't FBI profilers point to wanton and torture leading to animal killings by children/adults as behavior leading to serial killings? This behavior is disgusting and I cannot believe these people are still employed!!

Posted by: Trish Hertsgaard | August 6, 2009 08:44 PM

if you think that is bad, try looking at china's fur farms

makes me sick, does anybody out there care ????

I love and respect the right to life of all human beings and animal beings as they are mostly harmless and innocent as the children!
Love animals

Posted by: Marjorie Crusellas | August 6, 2009 08:46 PM

Aside from being sickened by this particular act what is equally disturbing is the fact that severely emotionally disturbed individuals such as this young woman are able to work in this field. I think it highlights the need for improved screening of all employees in regards to their character profile. This may sound a little out there but these individuals seek to work with vulnerable populations be it animals, children or the elderly. The individual in the photo (along with her manager) would probably be considered sociopathic if required to complete a personality inventory and I've no doubt this this is not the first time they have been cruel to animals. They are truly sick people. As for Petland, well...petstores shouldn't really exist now should they?

Posted by: Stephanie | August 6, 2009 08:46 PM

This girl looks pretty possessed herself, who else would hire her besides Petland? Let's have her be the star of the dunk tank for awhile, she will never amount to much else in life. Maybe she can join Ringling Brothers...she would fit right in!

Posted by: Bette Ray | August 6, 2009 08:46 PM

Elizabeth Carlisle- you will find for yourself.....the cruelty and fu**ed-up death you created. I hope you have known mercy. What you have done is really, really awfull. And potentially evil.
Are you serious.....you murdered rabbits?
I hope at some point in your life, You suffer very much.

Boycott this store. THis woman is very disturbed and should be reported to the police. The evidence is there as well as witnesses. She needs to rot in hell.

Posted by: Jill | August 6, 2009 08:49 PM

How is this legal in this country?!!!! I'm crying and sick to my stomach right now. These people should be slapped with a huge fine, that the only way people like that suffer, if they have to pay money.

Posted by: Batsheva | August 6, 2009 08:49 PM

This is DISGUSTING! It's sad to see that people like this exist in our world - those who have no conscience and devalue a life in an instant. She should not get out of this scotch-free; there needs to be action taken!

Posted by: Courtney | August 6, 2009 08:50 PM

this place shouldn't call it petland but petabuse this is just wrong those poor bunnys suffering. That girl smily should be fired and fined a hefty amount for drowning those bunnies. the mananger should also be fired and there name should be placed in the paper for what they did

Posted by: susan | August 6, 2009 08:51 PM

This is a BIG problem with people today. There are people with no sense of right and wrong and no conscience,no compassion for anything or anyone. And she is PROUD of it. God help this nation who boasts in behavior like this. I hope that all who have commented abhor The killing of human babies through abortion just as much. This is a sad nation, far strayed from where we started.

I can't belive how people still traet animals so cruely. Imagine if you were in their shoes and how you would feel.Having to eat your own kind, suffering from wounds and gasping for air while your being killed underwater by a heartless person.Dying a painful slow death. It's not right. We really need to shut these guys down so no harm can come to other animals.

I am very saddened, by the cruelty, and the lack of respect the manager showed. She should be terminated for this. As for the the girl who actually thought this was OK to kill these innocent animals, she should be prosecuted.
How sad is this.

I will never recommend this store and will let everyone know about this cruel act.

This is now to the point that legal action needs to be taken against not only Petland, but the manager who took this photograph and employee Elizabeth Carlisle. PETA, I urge you to report this to the authorities in Akron, Ohio immediately. If I lived in Akron, I would not want these people ruining my town's image.

I'm not sure what additional proof you could possibly need to shut down Petland.

What gets into these peoples mind? How can someone be so cruel to helpless animals. They trust us to provide the love and shelter, not the abuse. People like this should be put in prison and do the crime like a murderer. Anyone who does stuff like this is mental. I hope this b**ch gets jail time.

Posted by: Michelle | August 6, 2009 09:18 PM

That woman is sick. She and the manager who took the picture should be in jail. Petland should be held responsible for hiring those criminals.

Posted by: Hector | August 6, 2009 09:20 PM

Ok people. I looked it up, and this particular branch has been shut down, all of the animals were relocated to different Petlands, and criminal charges have been filed against the employee in the photo. So, a little good news I guess.

Posted by: Kara | August 6, 2009 09:23 PM

Seriously? This ugly b**ch needs to get some help. This kind of treatment of animals is UNACCEPTABLE! This is how it starts. First animals, then humans beings. Did we not learn anything from Jeffrey Dahmer?

Posted by: Tammy Wygmans | August 6, 2009 09:23 PM

It seems to me that dying is the best thing left for those rabbits. Ofcourse it should have been done humanley by a veterinarian that actually gives a damn about animals. From what the article says about how they lived, I'm sure they welcomed death.
How sad what we humans do to this world is.

Posted by: Jason Hatch | August 6, 2009 09:23 PM

OMG~~ This is disgusting! Took a picture with dead animals with a happy smile!

Karma will turn to you, you...!!!

Posted by: Nocturne Prince | August 6, 2009 09:23 PM

I find it hard to fathom that a person could take joy in killing a living breathing being. Who are these people? If she and her manager so happily kill these animals, will they also happily kill a human being? There are studies that prove this to be true. They need to do something about the manager and the employee. How about cruelty to animals? How about Petland being drug through the courts if this is what they advocate. I will never go into another petland for my animal food again and I will pray for the persons who did this. After what they have done and the negative feedback that they have received, I can't imagine what they are feeling now. Anyone who cares about animals and humans needs to pray hard for the people that take part in such depravity so that they will have a change of heart.

Posted by: amanda | August 6, 2009 09:29 PM

OMG I cannot believe they hire people who do this to animals!! its beyond discusting, disturbing, and she should go to jail and get same sentence as if she murdered a person!!! its sick and they should do psychological background checks before they hire their staff. I just saw the pic for a flash because i couldnt beleive my eyes i couldnt look at it, it broke my heart to see that.... but i did see it and i dont understand why anyone would do this.... one day when her day will come she will BE ACCOUNTABLE for every single thing she's ever done to animals because Im certain that this is probably not the first time that she has done this kind of thing... jsut a hunch.... please please please lets stop this kind of abuse!!!!

Posted by: N. Senecal | August 6, 2009 09:30 PM

How do people feel about recycled fur? Fur bought at vintage stores? It should be wasted and burned and as a political statement, not worn?

Is it possible for a soy burger to be developed thats so exact to a ground beef burger, with oozing juices and all, to be mandated as a legal and permanent replacement to fast food "meat"- and then make cloned meat illegal. People go to get fast food for the taste or nutrition?

Posted by: MikeAlike | August 6, 2009 09:31 PM

I really wonder why people without any respect for the life of defenseless animals would work in a pet shop and I am even more worried about Petland's policies and criteria for hiring their staff. They should have a whole better idea of what kind of people are working for them and they should make sure immdiately that only qualifed and caring persons get hired!!! How could a pet shop have "peolpe", I mean animal- murderer like this work for them??!! This is really disturbing!

Posted by: Friederike | August 6, 2009 09:32 PM

Are we sure those rabbits are real? Something looks off.

Posted by: Maria | August 6, 2009 09:32 PM

This needs to hit the papers and news in the town that the Petland is located in. See how many patronize that store then.
It makes you want to wipe that stupid smile off of her face. Hopefully the police will be able to do and and real real soon. I have always heard that people that do this type of horrible acts, move on to humans later on down the road. Think if she doesn't have children, someday she may and what type of child would that be with a mother like that. Probably 10 times more evil.
Society needs to stand up against things lilke this. Just a termination for her and the manager doesn't cut it.
She is a sick sick sicko!!!! I would hate to be the mother of that sick girl.

Posted by: Paula | August 6, 2009 09:33 PM

This c**t needs to be charged immediately with harsh punishments. She makes me absolutely sick. People in general who do such horrid things make me sick. Enjoy hell lady, because that's where you're headed.

Posted by: Julia | August 6, 2009 09:38 PM

WTF is wrong with this picture?? WTF is wrong with this young girl?? WTF is wrong with the store manager?? Are the authorities going to do something?? I suggest they apprehend her & her stupid f**k of a manager before someone else gets a hold of either of them & does the same horrible thing to them both that they did to those innocent rabbits. Shame on them both & Petland for allowing this type of act to occur in their store. I will never frequent the Petland stores.

Posted by: Lisa | August 6, 2009 09:39 PM

I could not believe what I was seeing!!!! What a horrible person she is to do what she did!!!! I hope she will face charges for animal abuse!!!

Posted by: Joanne McKenna | August 6, 2009 09:39 PM

This is mortifying!! Not only that an employee at a pet store could do this but that the freakin manager whom I assume is in charge, took the pictures. I think the term is sociopath.

Posted by: Melissa D | August 6, 2009 09:39 PM

well, that's it....no matter how much I might see something advertised in a petland store that I might like for my cats, I will never step into any pet store that sells any kind of animal ever again. and I hope that "girl" is haunted by her actions for the rest of her life. I have 7 cats that came from shelters or picked up in a street, thrown out by some one and I love them with all my heart. they couldn't be more loved than any animal purposely bred and sold, which really should be outlawed altogether.

Posted by: Anna | August 6, 2009 09:48 PM

Posted by: Brenda | August 6, 2009 09:49 PM

Let the people try her, and the photographer, in the court of the local courtyard. Then justice will be served. Guaranteed.

Posted by: Deborah | August 6, 2009 09:50 PM

We need to pass this through our contact list. Urge everyone we know to boycott the store completely. Put them out of business for not screening their employees better and not watching them a little closer. They are only interested in the money. Personally: an eye for an eye.

Posted by: Ric Testani | August 6, 2009 09:50 PM

How damn horrible...I own 2 rescued bunnies that have been saved from horrible lives. It's a shame what this bitch did because those rabbits could of lived happily lives with the right person to love and care for. Most people don't realize that rabbits are actually wonderful loving companions...also very in-expensive to care for...well minus the vet bills if you keep them healthy.

If you're looking to "buy" a rabbit...please SAVE a rabbit from your local animal shelter/rescue near by...and yes sometimes animal control does have rabbits.

Posted by: Matt Foley | August 6, 2009 10:04 PM

Of all the disgusting, hideous, horrible, stupid, foolish, cruel acts in the world - this rises to the very top. The girl in the picture is a cruel, hideous person - all I can say is God will deal with her and the other's involved after the public and the law are through with them. God works just a bit diffrently; cruelty is never something Heaven is happy about, in fact, very much the opposite. Ya, let them pay dearly, they deserve it.
This act is by far one of the absolute worst I've heard about.
When does all this sickness stop anyway? I can't sleep at night because my heart breaks on a constant basis for all the little (medium and big) creatures that are so innocent and gentle and yet are hurt because of that very sweet quality.

Posted by: ssf | August 6, 2009 10:05 PM

May she rot in hell. Petland needs to screen its employees. This person reflects a desperate need to be validated. She probably received little or no attention from mommy and daddy. What else does she do for attention?

Posted by: Joe Adiletta | August 6, 2009 10:06 PM

That is so horrible, I used to work at a Petland and I have a pet rabbit that I got from the store. I don't understand how anyone could do something like that. She deserves what ever she gets for it and probably worse.

Posted by: Samantha | August 6, 2009 10:06 PM

SERIOUS CHARGES NEED TO BE PUT IN PLACE HERE against the store and the employee. This behavior CAN NOT BE TOLERATED AT ALL, EVER. I have two rabbits, and they are the best and most gentle pets... very loving, too. And litter box trained

this is just sick and f**ked up i cant believe the world has come to this. Why does stuff like this just fly, I mean just cause their animals doesnt mean its ok to kill them like that, or kill them at all.

Posted by: Dax | August 6, 2009 10:14 PM

She probably thinks she so ~cool~. She is pathetic and she and her manager should be charged and held responsible. They should be paraded down the streets as the abusers they are so everyone can give them a piece of their minds!

This would be enough to have Petland shut down in a better world. I hope in time these rabbits lives will serve to end Petlands evil rampage.

I am a clinical psychologist and I can tell you that this is a messed up person. People who abuse animals rarely stop there. Who is Petland hiring to take care of these creatures? I will never shop there even when I am running out of dog or cat food. I have to boycott a place like this.

This makes me absolutly sick!

The comments are understandable, and I'm sure cathartic to all who have posted and read them. But we're all preaching to our own choir. PETA, having emailed this provoking horror to me and, I guess, to all the others here, what are YOU, PETA, proposing to do about this. You must tell all our members what action PETA intends to take on this. Otherwise, this could be seen as just rousing the troops to contribute more to PETA. Don't get me wrong, I support and contribute to your work; before PETA came along, this kind of thing wasn't even considered something to be measured by any standards of morality; animals were just possessions, things to too many people.

Have you sent this train of comments to anyone, so that someone outside our own sphere of concern are aware of the emotional intensity being displayed here? A good start would be to send it to this clueless sociopath and her manager. Otherwise, all these folks are just wasting their time and emotion.

Please tell us the rest of the story - what is PETA doing about this, other than just putting it out there on your list-serve.

Oh, and one more thing, I think the technique of water-boarding has at last found an appropriate usefulness. Forget psychological analysis and fines. A little water-boarding might get this cretan's attention and give her something to remember.

What do you expect from a store like Petland. This store needs to be closed for good it has nothing only bad reports

Posted by: caroline pobanz | August 6, 2009 10:20 PM

This is a sick and twisted individual. She should have mandetory jail time and as a reminder of her act, have this picture posted in her cell as a constant reminder. She will get her punishment in due time be it by the legal system or a higher authority!!!

Posted by: Tammy Joyce | August 6, 2009 10:20 PM

how can anyone do that?!? i could NEVER think of hurting another living creatue and i dont understand how anyone else could. AND THERE BRAGGING!?! i hope they all burn in hell!

Posted by: Amanda | August 6, 2009 10:23 PM

how can she smile like that after killing those animals? this is sick and she is obviously a psychopath. Lets do something about it. In fact I will start my personal war against Petland

Posted by: edna | August 6, 2009 10:25 PM

how could you this cruel thing? would you like to get a taste of it?

Posted by: Mia | August 6, 2009 10:25 PM

Ditto to all the above! Sick, Sick, Sick.

Posted by: Marko Madrazo | August 6, 2009 10:25 PM

This woman is the epitamy of evil...you can bet she was a bully at school...she is in serious need of psych. help.... and should NEVER be allowed to have anything to do with animals again.

Whant sort of person takes pleasure in causing pain to helpless creatures? She is a sadist.

This f**king ugly looking whore will get what is coming to her in HELL! She deserves what she gives and karma will come through.

Posted by: Angela | August 6, 2009 10:30 PM

It is a shame in this century people still sell animals and breed animals for profit. I urge that these cruel practices must be banned from a civilized society.

Posted by: mah har | August 6, 2009 10:30 PM

We must not be silent when it comes to animal abuse/neglect!!! PLEASE CONFRONT ANIMAL CRUELTY!!!!!!!!!Ignoring it is condoning it!!!!!!

This is deplorable why has this hideous person not been taken into custody for psychiatric assessment, I also feel the person who took the photograph deserves the same treatment. The address of the retail outlet should be published and shamed, at the least boycotted then preferably closed down. Just appalling.

Posted by: Lynda | August 6, 2009 10:31 PM

I cannot understand the inhumane treatement of these innocent rabbits. At the least they should have been turned loose in the wild, were they belong in the first place. How can these people get away with this, is their no laws protecting the rights of these rabbits or any other inhumane treatment to other animals. Why are these people not in jail for a very long time??????? This is disgusting.

Urgh... the empty feeling inside of me is undescribable.
Animals have no voice and no choice in what you do to them. All they could think is "Why are you doing this to us?" while I'm sitting here wondering why I couldn't save them... they are silent victims.

Posted by: Annick | August 6, 2009 10:36 PM

This woman is not a woman, she is wearing a zip costume and underneath it all she is a sick, weak, self loathing, insecure shit that came out of a demon's ass. Harsh but this is seriously upsetting. How would she like it if someone with 10 times her power and size tried to drown her? She needs to go away for awhile in a psychiatric institution. And Petland... I have seen various sea creatures showing psychologically disturbing behaviours there. For example, what is a stingray doing in a tank??? The thing was going up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down experiencing mental stress... And sea horses? They are very very delicate creatures who will quickly die in a tank because people don't know how to care for them and shouldn't even attempt it, they belong in the wild. Humans can be so bloody selfish.

She who did this needs to remember that the Lord does come back and he does repay any and all aflictions on his children. I, myself will not wish bad on this person, but, the LORD will repay her in his own way for all the wrongs that she is commiting. What comes around goes around and we should all rememeber this, because it is soooo true! Keep this in mind when you deal with anyone..What ever you sow so shall you reap.... And may the Lord forgive you .. probably not her ... for all your sins.

Posted by: mary | August 6, 2009 10:37 PM

She better be charged with animal cruelty...what a freaking psychotic whore!

Posted by: Anna Wells | August 6, 2009 10:37 PM

The fact that this monster is now hated by thousand of people for her crimes is a good thought but I want her to realise and regret her crimes as well as her cruel manager who is as horrible as her but not known by everybody. I hope no other pets will suffer by the hand of those crazy employees. And I will never go to Petland nor any of my friends. RIP poor little rabbits.
