Back in May, we told you that a bill was under consideration in Bolivia to ban all animals from circuses—and that bill was recently made law! With the passage of law number 4040 by Bolivian President Evo Morales, the day has finally arrived when "It is forbidden to use wild and/or domestic animals in circuses throughout the country." As far as we know, Bolivia is the first country in the world to enact such a landmark measure for animals abused in circuses.

Bolivia is no stranger to looking out for animals. The country already set a precedent when it banned its military from mutilating dogs and other animals during training exercises. And with the passage of this new law, elephants, lions, tigers, horses, dogs, and all other animals who are forced to live in shackles or cages—and are routinely beaten into submission in order to perform unnatural circus "tricks"—will no longer be subjected to these cruelties in Bolivia.

And as if that weren't enough, PETA is now working closely with the Bolivian government on the country's first national animal protection framework law. If the measure is adopted, it would make Bolivia a global leader in animal welfare.

With the way things are moving, it seems that animals in Bolivia are on a fast track to having all the simple inalienable rights they deserve.

On behalf of animals in Bolivia, muchas gracias to President Morales, Member of Congress Ximena Flores, and concerned citizen Ana Serrano Revollo for all their hard work in making this law prohibiting animal circuses a reality!

I am all for banning all animals from circuses but if that happens, what will become of the animals? Are there enough sanctuaries to take them all in? Will the circuses sell the animals to hunting ranches? I am just worrying about the animals. I dont want them in circuses or any other type of animal "entertainment" but what will happen to them?

This is great news but in all due respect the group responsible for this remarkable achievement are Animal Defenders International www.ad-international.org based in London.

Fantastic, Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in Latin America but it certainly tops everybody else in compassion!

If Bolivia can pass a law banning animals being used in the circus, then what is wrong with the US? We need to follow suit and stop exploiting animals.

Whoever is responsible...it's fantastic news and the fact that this type of practice hasn't been adopted worldwide is completely unacceptable!!

Way to go Bolivia - this is such wonderful news. I hope and pray that this is the beginning of the end of all circuses around the world. Let's keep working for this - OK. God bless Bolivia for doing what's best for the animals and not in favor of the greedy humans.

I'm new to PETA and really like this set-up. My 8 year old son's first girl friend was a Vegan, and now he's interested in it. While I'm not happy about his interest to date already, the young girl (his best friend) was really great in teaching him and I about the abuses of animals. I used to know many trainers in the race horse and PREMARIN (pregnant mare urine) farms industry, 2 major abuses of horses. We need to work to stop the slaughter of foals as bi-products and racing of horses till they are injured. I've seen some really bad horses at the auctions (Sisseton, SD) and the slaughterhouse sales are a nightmare. We need too look into this further.

HOORAY! I hope that America does this soon, I am SO OVER the idiots that go to Circus gigs and tell their kids " they love being in the circus, and they love their trainers and they are treated well" grrrrr.
