The rugged vocalist has always been an enigma in reference to animal rights. I know that Anthony Kiedis is a vegetarian but I'm not certain if he is for moral and/or animal welfare reasons.

lol, awesome picture. Never heard of this guy before... just from this action, I'll check out his work.

Of course he is. He hates them. Even before he became vegetarian and then vegan. And he was last years sexiest vegetarian :D

I do find it funny that PETA thinks that you only go vegan if you support animal rights. Sorry, but not always the case - other things can come into play, such as a restricted diet to it. Even then, they may become pescarians or ovo/lactate vegans.
That said, I appreciate Kiedis' right to free speech. It's hard to stand up for your beliefs if you are a celebrity because of potential backlash to your career.

This guy is a legend in the UK, When they come to play tickets are sold out, and knowing he cares for animals welfare makes him an even cooler guy. Keep up the good work.

For those of you who don't know, Anthony Kiedis is the lead singer for the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, a socal band that has been popular all over the world for over 25 years. Do the songs "under the bridge" or "scar tissue" ring a bell? If not, please listen to a few songs on itunes. This man is a legend.

Or he could be making an approving hiphop gesture signalling his fondness for them

Now thats just silly buddy!!! Red Hot Chilli Peppers is one of the greatest punk/funk bands to march this face of this earth. Anyone who says they have not heard of them just dont know the names of the songs they sing. Trust me, everyone has heard his music unless you live with meerkats in africa!!! LOL!!!!
Anyways, McDonalds sucks....

I love Anthony Kiedis. I grew up listening to RHCP. He's been a vegetarian for awhile, his girlfreind turned him onto it and he's kept it.Yay!

I don't know, we'd have to ask him.
Rock stars and other celebreties are known to pander to the anti-Big Bad Evil Corporation Withoutny Ethics crowd. It was most likely a spontaneous gesture to that effect. If Mr. Kiedis had any serious systematic efforts going against them, we would've probably heard of it by now.

Ummm... Mel... actually, you're not vegan if you eat ANY kind of animal product, not even honey. I think a bit more research on your part would be a good thing...

He is the lead guy of red hot chilli peppers he has a book out called scar tissue great guy!
Posted by: daniel | June 24, 2009 06:26 AM
Um... Tammy, I'm not stupid and do know the definitions.
Honey is actually pollen that bees collect and process for food. It's vegan (or at least more vegan than milk or eggs are), and no bees are killed when you take honey from the honeycombs. (I have seen honey be removed from a beehive so I do know what I'm talking about).
Also - a fact - most people I know of who claim to be vegans are actually one of the two I mentioned. I rarely actually read of an actual vegetarian.
Plus, unless you're really strict, you cannot be a true vegetarian. You eat fries at McDonald's? - you eat meat because they use a beef based oil. Same with a lot of eating places - either you eat out real expensive or you're exposed to a non-vegan product. Several sauces even at fancy places require the use of eggs or other animal by-products.

I'M LOVING IT. AWESOME GESTURE ANTHONY!
Posted by: CINDY | June 24, 2009 08:12 PM
Sorry Mel, but you obviously DONT know the definitions at all. Vegans do not eat animal products for several reasons... not purely so animals are not killed. It's also because of animal exploitation, hence vegans not eating honey. I know... I've done my research. I am a vegan.

I don't know what potential backlash Anthony would suffer if he was just plain out saying he doesn't care for McDonald's...I'm sure he's comfortable in his position in music since RHCP has so many fans...and it's only McDonald's...seriously...not a big deal and I'm sure he doesn't care what anyone thinks. Vitesh's comment made me laugh. Dunno if it was a joke or not but it was funny to me. =)

I didn't read all the comments but has anyone just flat out asked him?
I think he's AR / VEG / Green

Mel, it's obvious that you have your terms mixed up since you are using "vegan" and "vegetarian" interchangeably, as shown in your sentence "Also - a fact - most people I know of who claim to be vegans are actually one of the two I mentioned. I rarely actually read of an actual vegetarian."
i don't believe that anybody claiming to be a vegan would eat any sort of animal-based or animal-exploiting product, as Tammy was trying to politely point out to you. And just because you've "seen honey be removed from a beehive", it does not make you an expert on veganism. If you are truly interested, there are many informative and wonderful websites you can check out, the PETA site being one of them.
