Why has Cheers star Kirstie Alley packed on 83 pounds after her widely publicized diet as a spokesperson for Jenny Craig in 2007?
![]() |
She told People magazine, "A vegetarian would probably be eating vegetables. But to me being a vegetarian meant I'm going to eat enchiladas with no meat, and I'm going to eat lots of bread, lots of carbs."
Hey, Kirstie: put the slimy, butter-slicked fork down! Vegans are, on average, 10 to 20 pounds lighter than meat-eaters are, so we promise you'll see results!
If Nia Vardalos can drop 40 pounds by kicking cheese, Kirstie surely would slim down if she said, "Bye, bye, butter!" and gave vegan fare a shot. To help her in this endeavor, a copy of Skinny Bitch is on its way to her, courtesy of PETA.

I must admit that over the years I've become a hefty vegetarian. It's my fault but vegetarian food is so good I gorge on it. Flesh-foods are repulsive while beans, nuts, grains and tofu rule. Meatless Indian cuisine is very satiating too.

I have a real difficult time getting off cheese, I love it's taste. I'm off of meat, eggs and milk, but cheese is a tough one. I don't like the prices of soy cheese, either.
But, I'll eventually go that route, even if it just makes a single cow experience just a little bit less exploited.

According to John Tesh and all his infinite wisdom diets never work.
Its all about the small changes that are good for one's self.

Cause nothing promotes vegetarianism like making fun of fat WOMEN!
Not that I'd be very fond if you made fun of fat men either. However, it seems between this and your last "tee hee look at what Jessica Simpson and a whale have in common", that you are incredibly insensitive towards the constant sizeism that plagues women each and every day.
Did you sign the book, "From the people who will never stop making a joke of fat women like you, to get across that vegetarianism is a great idea! - PETA"

If I was a person who truly wanted to lose weight I would at least give a vegan diet a try. Some of my overweight friends have, and will, try just about anything (except a pure vegetarian diet), but to no avail.
While you can be an overweight vegan, the odds are that you will be slimmer.
Obesity in all age groups is reaching epic proportions in North America. Go vegan for a month and see what happens.

My real obsession is mayonnaise. Everything else (meat, butter, cheese, eggs etc.) I can do without.

To Meg Schramm- you can get Veganaise at whole foods. It's not bad and tastes like the real thing.
I thought about buying Skinny Bitch but read some reviews that upset people. I am not vegan and do not wish to be vegan. I read great reviews and a bunch of reviews that tuerned people off and pissed them off. It sounded like the author attacked meat eaters and basically threw discgusting (although real) examples in their face about meat products. I am just going off reviews I read.
I do not wish to ever become vegan, so I would never purchase this book. I don't think it is necessary to make people feel bad for being vegetarian NOT vegan or for eating meat. You don't win people over by being mean.

BRANDE veganaise tastes MUCH better than the "real thing".It is alot different in taste and ingredients, too many veg. people make the mistake of refering to flesh and dairy foods as the "real thing' as if veg. foods are to be looked at as purely substitutes. Hi fat and cholesterol should never be referred to as 'the real thing'.

Isn't veganism supposed to be about compassion? I have type 2 diabetes and I've been a vegetarian for many years. Sometimes your body will rebel after you've been on too many diets . You lose the weight but then it comes back. To me veganism is just an easy way to really help animals; but it's not a weight issue. I like Kirstie and I think maybe she was just being honest. To me obesity is a personal problem- it's between a person and their doctor. The earth isn't going to crumble under more weight. Many people make assumptions too, "oh, she eats too much or he doesn't exercise enough. " As much as I think PETA is a terrific organization, I don't think making fun of celebrities' butts will help anybody.

"vegetarian food is so good I gorge on it"
Are you sure its satiating? You aren't over compensating for lack of satisfaction by any chance.

While a diet rich in fruits and veggies is good for you, the best diet is one that includes some meat/fish/egg products. There are elements in those you cannot get in supplements or in vegetables. Sorry, but that's the facts.
You also - believe it or not, can gain weight being just a vegetarian. The only way you can be that supposed "10 to 20 pounds lighter" than meat eaters is if you just eat the fruits and veggies without the dressings.
How do I know? - I am an omnivore and have kept my weight off after losing 50 pounds by moderation. I'm a healthy weight for my height. I lost too MUCH weight being a strict vegan (BTW, not by choice), and realized that in order to stay healthy I had to include some meat/animal by-products in my diet.
Seriously - if you want people to listen to you, you need to actually look at the whole picture.

40 lbs by cutting out cheese? how much cheese was she eating? vegans can be unhealthy too, especially if you rely on junk frozen meat substitutes for your nutrition. I think that a correct balanced vegan diet is the best way to stay healthy and trim, no animal products needed

When I first starting going veg, my priority was animal welfare not vanity. I ate lots of pasta with lots of oil. Funny I can't think of the name of it(oil) now. Now I use earth balance soy butter. The point I am trying to make is the arguments of meateaters like Christy are so very lame. She is going to eat lots of bread and carbs, I got news for you Christy, you can't get much fatter. How about thinking about something apart from yourself, all three hundred pounds of you. If I were president, I would detaine people for eating that much. I feel guity when I drink to much. Who am I to consume that much grain?
This culture of selfish indulgence on the flesh of animals is appalling and an abomination.
How about the MEAT YOUR MEAT DIET.
Ohhhhh no, I can't watch that I'm toooooooooooo sensitive.
How can you eat something that you can't watch die.
Ever think about that Christy, perhaps you should have you head examined.

first of all everything she's claimed shoving down her throat is NOT VEGETARIAN!
sighs.. it's a processed food diet she is eating and again how many times do folks have to get that pounded into their heads that processed foods are inflammatory foods and they're not good for you no matter how much you slice it.
stop eating crap!
