Human Skin Used to Make Maps, Boots, and Flags

Wherever American artist Andrew Krasnow displays his maps, cowboy boots, and American flags, controversy is hot on his heels.
![]() |
Why all the fuss, guys? Using human skin donated to medical science to make a nice pair of boots is a use of flesh that we should all throw our weight behind!
While the photos of his work (which he says is intended to question American ethics and values) might make you a wee bit queasy, Krasnow's creations are far more humane and understandable than leather jackets, snakeskin belts and baby-alligator–skin purses (their small heads included). Those turn my stomach because—unlike the folks who donate their bodies to science—cows, snakes, alligators, and other animals did not sign up to have their skins ripped from their bodies.
Krasnow's next show has been commissioned by the U.K. Human Tissue Authority. Hopefully, the protesters howling outside the show will stop to consider the skins used for their own belts and bags.

Wow, this guys' crazy!! I hope people that view this can "feel" the connection. It once was a living tissue BUT then so were the animals' skins!! Both are equally gross!!
Posted by: Carla | May 28, 2009 03:09 PM
The major point is humans volunarily donate their skins and bodies in contrast to animals who are involunarily brutalized, lacerated and killed for their skins, fur, pelts and flesh.

Better them than innocent animals who have no say in having their skin ripped of by sicko humans.

Amazing - which this would catch on in China!

Amazing - wish this would catch on in China!

This is nothing short of being sadistic. I thought we were civilized and most of all human, but it seems we are lacking in both categories. Using both animal flesh as well as human flesh is equally devilish in my opinion.

Cool ,more power to him!
Posted by: Christine Hill | May 28, 2009 03:55 PM
How dare he use skin donated for medical research! How did he get his hands on the human skin.
I don't wear leather etc, nor have I for 27 or more years but I think this is a sign of the times in the worst way imaginable. It says nothing about brutality to animals but everything about human brutality to humans.
This show is completely degenerate and should be against the law.
How does PETA find this newsworthy in a good way? I said PETA had gone over the top recently and again this proves you have lost your minds if you endorse this type of barbary.
Posted by: withgoddess | May 28, 2009 04:00 PM
This chap has been reading my mind! ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT - if it is good enough for Dooney & Burke, etc. to skin beautiful animals for handbags, shoes, etc., then surely, it is timely that humans started donating their skin, fur, paws for ashtrays. Oh, and by the way, we have rapists, murderers and animal abusers (Michael Vicks) - use them for medical experimentation and I would be content. Now, about food - humans also taste like Chicken....KFC...the other, other White Meat.
Posted by: Susan Duffy | May 28, 2009 04:05 PM
I want to be turned into a pair of boot when I die.
I think the hard part would be finding someone to work with human skin.
And yes animal leather and fur is cruel. Its just I saw this show where back in the day someone was skinned into a leather wallet because back in the day if you committed such a crime you were turned into a wallet.
Frankly as sick as it sounds I wouldn't mind have a human leather wallet or a human leather anything. Its just hard to come by human leather for obvious reasons. xD

This is just as disgusting as using animal skin for similar purposes. How do two wrongs make a right? And, using skin from bodies donated to medical science is unethical unless the donors gave their persmission (which I doubt). I am a PETA supporter but I think you are off base on this one.
Posted by: Sharon | May 28, 2009 04:20 PM
This is ridiculous! If a person is donating his or her body for SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, that's what it's for. NOT FOR SOMEONE TO MAKE INTO "ART." Yes, using leather is not right but this is totally unethical. It's showing disrespect to those who have shown total generosity by donating their bodies to science! Disgraceful!
Posted by: JoAnne Kropf | May 28, 2009 04:20 PM
An art exhibition that truly offers food for thought.
Posted by: Gail | May 28, 2009 04:51 PM
its interesting but doesn't show any point about animals. Have you ever seen the BodyWorlds exhibit? its skinless human bodies displayed...its fascinating. I just don't think anyone would connect this to animals. The human obviously was not cruelly killed for his/her skin..just my opinion!
Oh wait...I just realized that wasn't the point. WOW I should maybe READ CAREFULLY before I comment! lol
Posted by: jenna | May 28, 2009 05:16 PM
For all you people who obviously know nothing about medical science, their are certain times when skin cannot be used.
Therefor, it is given to artistic geniuses such as these.
I think it is wonderful.
Posted by: Robert Johanansen | May 28, 2009 05:34 PM
I think this is truly wonderful. I would gladly purchase these products. Also,I wouldn't have a problem if I met my demise that I could be used in place of something so innocent.
Posted by: jennifer morgan | May 28, 2009 05:37 PM
Does this mean it could be open season on humans in the near future?
Posted by: J Bradshaw | May 28, 2009 06:05 PM
Very thought provoking--it should make people who are not aware of this issue consider where their shoes and handbags really came from. This isn't any more disgusting than killing cows and other animals and turning them into clothing.

Congratulations from Argentina!
go vegan / hazte vegano!!!!!!
Posted by: mariela | May 28, 2009 06:36 PM
Using human skin for anything is along the lines of satanic. In the Holocaust they used human skin for lamp shades, etc... serial killers have used it for their own advantage as well. If you're against using animal skin why would you be for using human skin no matter if it is donated or not. Not only is it creepy but it is along the lines of insane to even think this is alright.
Posted by: Denise | May 28, 2009 06:48 PM
Wow thats amazing, human population is on increase. morover humans are heartless anywas, so why care..
BTW where can i buy these products?????

You know just as a funny fact in the frontier age there would be not PETA because back then you had to kill to live. Sure you could farm in the spring and summer months but in the winter you had to hunt. kill. survive.
Sadly it seems some humans have lost there way there once was a respect for humans a animals. We knew we had to survive them and we respected their deaths knowing we had to eat to live. Now that we have alternatives to eating we seem to think that we can stop eatting animals. This may be true for some but not for all. Peta back in the say use to just stand for animals being treated bad, now they have lost their path and are now fighting everyone. So sad seeing something i had high hopes for fall into the depths of confusion.

Posted by: Jamie | May 28, 2009 09:47 PM
people need to chill. you know how many bodies get donated to medical research?? they do not use all the skin they get, there's only so much you can do with it. In all likelihood he was just using the leftovers. But good work on overreacting and missing the point, that was awesome
Posted by: Mari Rogers | May 29, 2009 01:24 AM
Ohhhh.. When cruel humans skin animals alive to make bags, coat, or shoes cruely, humans buy it without any complain but when we use humans skin people start making noise.. What a shame to these kind of humans.. Hahahah.. I hope god will skin these people alive when they die in hell so they will know how it feels..

Krasnow - looks like Russian
name. Well perhaps his ancestors eat human flesh?
Posted by: Joan | May 29, 2009 07:50 AM
this is disgusting. it is wrong for both humans and animals alike. skin from both humans and animals should NOT be worn
Posted by: lindsey | May 29, 2009 08:12 AM
Good idea as long as it is seen in context to cruelty done to animals
Posted by: Jana | May 29, 2009 09:12 AM
This is nothing new. The Nazis used to make decorative items from the skin of their victims. Tattooed lampshades and book covers were very popular items in Germany in the 1930's. The wife of the commandant of Buchenwald was convicted of crimes against humanity when her human skin collection was used as evidence against her.
Posted by: Rev. Meg Schramm | May 29, 2009 10:55 AM
This is disgusting. When will you learn that civil discussion such as what y'all are doing in DC is much more effective than over the top tactics like this. No one wants to see fashion accessories reminiscent of Auschwitz. (And I can see the wheels turning, There is a huge difference between the Holocaust and using animal skins) and to compare the 2, as peta supporters have done in the past is insulting to Jews and inappropriate.

I have donated my body to the British anatomy center (they can't take the body if I die at Christmas or Easter!)
I'd love to have my skin used for boots or handbags and the money raised to go to promote empathy for all living things on our planet, sentient or insentient
Posted by: vieta shroff oliver | May 29, 2009 11:27 AM
Too bad people aren't this repulsed and horrified by their own leather and suede purses, wallets, sofas, jackets and shoes. Instead, having something made from a dead animal is some sort of status symbol (it's "genuine" leather!). Who's the real sick ones here?
Posted by: andi | May 29, 2009 11:30 AM
GOSH!!!!!!!! THAT IT SO UNFAIR!!! People can only donate their skin IF THEY CHOOSE TO but when it's the animals' turn, they're NOT ALLOWED TO CHOOSE, THEY DIDN'T SAY THEY WANT TO DIE FOR FASHION PURPOSES!!!!!!!! SO UNFAIR!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Jennifer | May 29, 2009 11:34 AM
Two points:
1. Supporting the use of human tissue - even donated by the person to science - is not right. Those people donated it to the use of science, not art or wearables.
There is another exhibit with the use of skeletons and muscles and such that are displayed as art. The outcry is just as bad as this idea. These people wanted to further medicine, not be used for art.
PETA, supporting this harms another part of your wishes - when cadavers are used for stuff like this, that means an animal will end up being used for lab testing in its place. The items culled from human bodies - including skin, can be used to help others through testing and skin grafts. And even if not used for grafts, the tissue can be used to test treatments for things such as melanoma or other skin cancers/diseases.
2. Applauding this is tantamount to what happened in the Holocaust. German soldiers had lampshades and other items made of the skin of murdered Jews and non-Ayrans. Those people died in the same cruel and unusual way that you decry people using animals for.
I understand that you want people to not kill animals at all, but at the same time, some cases at least they're using all the animal - i.e. leather and suede and both from animals that are used for food.
I personally agree with furs and hides of animals that are not used for other means - you shouldn't kill an animal unless you're going to use all of it, but what you're wanting people to support - ironically - has a past that is similar to what you decry. To me, your thinking this a great idea is tantamount to the same thing as in the past - it's still murder of an innocent for a fashion item (even if human was - and hopefully remains - in the past).
Posted by: mel | May 29, 2009 12:51 PM
I am very happy that Mr. Krasnow did this. It shows how disgusting it truly is to disrespect any living thing. And for those who say it is wrong, remember one thing, the skin of the people used is from dead bodies, the skin from innocent, helpless animals can come from living animals causing them great suffering, that is wrong! All living beings should be respected and treated accordingly. It is never okay to cause pain and suffering to a living, helpless being. Never...
Posted by: Yvonne Poleto | May 29, 2009 01:11 PM
What does it matter if the person donated their body to science? This is disgusting.
If someone donated their PETS body to science (for example, as a humane way for veterinarians to dissect as part of their education), and THAT animal ended up as leather, PETA would be throwing a fit.
If one of my family members donated their body to science and ended up as this sick art, I would be hunting down the "artist".
I agree that both are disgusting, I agree that the people upset over this should take a look at what they themselves are wearing. If you had simply pointed out the irony, I would be 100% behind you. But to condone this? THIS is why people think PETA are a bunch of nuts.
Posted by: Care | May 29, 2009 01:32 PM
I dont think any other animal uses the flesh of their own kind to do anything.
But you find this admirable? whats next, you are gonna advocate eating human flesh? eew. you guys are losing focus.
Posted by: taylor | May 29, 2009 01:50 PM
The thing about leather jackets which I do own or leater shoes which I also own is that the animal is already dead and its skin has already been made into a shoe so wouldn't it be a waste not to wear leather?
Posted by: H | May 29, 2009 03:57 PM
Joe, I agree. The moment I read this and noticed that PETA thinks this is a good idea the moment I realized that they have lost their minds at times. Seriously PETA, with how sincere this is, you are losing what credibility you have.
I don't understand why PETA thinks this is something "We should throw our weight against?" It's truly barbaric, and something the Nazis did. And - sorry PETA but true - those people were treated as inhumanely as the animals you support. Some were skinned alive, burned, tortured, etc.
These people gave their bodies to science, and if all is not used, the remains should be cremated and the ashes strewn so they can help the environment again (i.e. the ashes to ashes/circle of life).
My part - I do not support any process where an animal is killed just for their skins. That said, other items such as leather and suede I do because I know that more than just the skin is used. I wish sometimes you'd reason a little more and realize that as you'll probably never get the world to go vegan, you should try to get companies to only use animals where all the parts of the animal are used. This means, instead of protesting leather and suede (from cows and pigs), protest the use of ermine, fox, mink, seal (well... you're doing this), bear, and a few others.

Hm, some commenters must be specisists. I don't see a difference between animal skins and human skins used for anything.
Posted by: Aneliese | May 29, 2009 04:19 PM
Everyone is missing the point here. Human skin, no matter how you twist it is disgusting. Wearing animals may not be your thing, I know it's not mine, but wearing people is almost worse, who cares if the person is dead already, it's immoral and it is something a serial killer would do.
Posted by: Anthony | May 29, 2009 05:47 PM
I agree that if a body is donated for science then that is what should be done with it. People use cadaver skin for burn patients. I think this is a lot more important than a map or purse
Posted by: patti | May 29, 2009 06:36 PM
Maybe instead of this guy using human skin donated for medical research to make useless creation, a pair of doctors could have used that skin for...hmmm...medical research?
Too many people out there waste useful materials, it's no wonder we depend so much on animals.
Posted by: Meghan | May 29, 2009 06:37 PM
I am so tired of hearing people say it's insulting to compare animal cruelty to the Holocaust. I am jewish and I totally see the connection. I think it's brilliant on PETA's part to promote this. If you have ever seen how animals are transported, abused on factory farms and in the slaughterhouses and on fur farms etc. I think anyone would agree. At least humans have the capacity to try to escape, animals have NO voice whatsoever. So why is it insulting? Are we as humans better than animals, this is the mindset we are trying to overcome, that animals should have rights just as humans. They are sentient, feeling beings.
I hope what this artist is doing will make people think twice about wearing an animal skin. So ROCK ON PETA!
Posted by: Lisa | May 29, 2009 07:47 PM
This is wonderful idea! all leather should be made from human skin! why oh why are they wasting all those human corpses by burying them in coffins when they could be eating the dead meat and using the skin for leather?
it should be a law that all humans that want to eat meat and use leather must donate their dead bodies to be used for meat and leather.
I also think dead human bodies would make great dog & cat food, as well as raw hide chewies.
This would put an end to the killing of any animals and the meateaters could still have their meat and leather.
Posted by: Missy | May 29, 2009 09:46 PM
WOW! This will get people thinking!
Posted by: Shari | May 29, 2009 10:21 PM
Aneliese, there's the ick factor and memories of the Holocaust. Plus, even though these people are already dead, humans are not killed for food or their hides, whereas animals are.
If nothing else, call it a social mentality, but we don't live in the Victorian days anymore where it was normal for a family to make a mourning wreath out of their deceased loved one's hair.
I guess why this bothers me is that there is no respect for the dead - any being - with comments such as the one in the main blog. Every time I eat meat or an animal by-product, I give thanks for the animal and the nutrients it provides myself and others. I also will only wear leather or suede because I know the animal was used in many ways and not just for the skin or musk glands. To me, if an animal's going to be killed for something, I'd rather it be an animal that has several uses (food, clothing, glue). To me anyway, even though PETA supports a vegetarian lifestyle, it's a more humane choice to kill a few animals and use all of it than slaughter however many innocent animals to make one fur coat - and the rest of the animal is just tossed away.
In the case with this human skin art, I feel almost as if the cadaver was stripped of their skin and the body parts thrown away like you get with minks, ermines, foxes, etc. To me, it's just as cruel as those who kill animals for their hides - even if the person bequeathed their body to science (but also, science is NOT art, which is what this is used for).
And, some of that skin used for the art could've been used in testing or skin grafts or something that benefits life. Taking it away to use for art leaves a hole in lab testing that could be filled with the skin of a lab rat or other animal, who could suffer from pain of testing.

There's no difference between animals and humans in this!!!
Posted by: Erika | May 30, 2009 12:18 AM
By any stretch of any decent person's imagination, this is sick, disgusting and irreverent of a life lived. If you think this is "cool" then you are truly COLD. Have a heart & sensibility. If PETA wishes to remain a symbol for protecting life and respecting all creatures, then PETA should also respect humans. This smacks of "Silence of the Lambs" - it sickens me to think that any decent person would think this is ok in any way. I suppose it takes all kinds to make up this world - Freaks included. I am vegetarian and a medical professional and do not view anyone as "less than" for their views or beliefs but this definitely crosses the line. Will he use a shrivelled up human liver next as art or some other body part. What is this guy thinking and why would ANYONE do this if not just for the negative attention. What next? Is it okay to see torture as art? Sick is sick - no matter how you look at it. Call this man a good psychiatrist and lock him up. And for all of you who think this is a good idea - take a look at your kids & see if you'd want their skin turned into art... ( so Mr. Krasnow - you just got more of what you wanted - did it make YOUR skin tingle???Get some help!!)

I'm really tempted to joke about this, like saying "Ed Gein would give this thumbs up!" but, well I already did.Heh.
Posted by: Jackie | May 30, 2009 05:25 AM
For those of you comparing this to th Nazi's you need to realize that historians now agree that the human lambpshades and soap were actually propoganda the Soviets made up against the Germans. And the other exhibit on Human Bodies, the people DONATED their bodies to that artist. In fact he has so many bodies being donated to him, he can't keep up.
Calm down. nobody was hurt and it is thought provoking. When you donate your body, you give up all rights to it, if scientists couldn't find use for the skin, why not an artist?
Posted by: Art Wald | May 30, 2009 09:42 AM
Wow, for those of you who think that "the animal is already dead" so why not use it for leather... don't you realize that the animals are being KILLED for their skin? The continued demand for leather and other animal by-products will result in continued animal abuse.
The difference between the human skin used by Mr. Krasnow and the animal skin worn for fashion is that the animals were killed for human use. Mr. Krasnow is not suggesting/implying that we should start killing humans for clothing and wallets.
Some of you have really missed the point.
Posted by: Michele | May 30, 2009 10:37 AM
A tad to creepy for me. Just thinking about the person or persons that do the actual skinning of these people. YUK!
Reminds me of serial killer Eddie Gein.

That's...kinda gross. I mean it's a good alternative to using animal skin, but I would rather not wear leather or use pleather than wear actual leather or human skin.
Posted by: Laura | May 30, 2009 12:22 PM
Why not use human skin? Animals die horrible deaths for their skin and humans wear them without any feeling about it. I think this will make a strong statement about the use of skin. Inmates on deathrow should also be used for medical experimentation instead of animals!
Posted by: mel | May 30, 2009 01:23 PM
WOW! Can we say OVERREACTING!! I think this is great, it proves what I have believed all along...no one really goes over the top when an animal is used for fur, but use a human, and the crap hits the fan!!
In high school, I started a poster campaign to help fur animals keep their skin, by encouraging people to wear the skins of beautiful people! It was great, even though many people got upset about it, even they saw that skin should remain on the thing it was created to be on!!
And alot of cadavers are never even utilized...some cannot be used for different resons, such as the person having a disease, or unhealthy skin. And then you have the med school cadavers who are just cut up to be looked at, and then disposed of. So really this guy is not wasting anything, and think about this...violent criminals who die, most of the time are donated to science.
I always tell people if I ever eat meat again, it will be human! who are we to think we are so important? right now there are people wearing the flesh of the mother of a calf, who is now an orphan, or veal. All the animals who are killed for fur or leather have families, are theirs any less important than ours? Think about these things before you fly off the handle!
Posted by: Zyklonia Dark | May 30, 2009 07:37 PM
MUDRA, I totally agree with you....humans are indeed heartless and cruel and lack empathy. What has this world come to??? Such a shame.
Posted by: Denise C | May 30, 2009 09:55 PM
Is he serious? This harkens back to the days of Nazi genocide! PETA makes a good point...this skin was donated to medical science. These people gave their bodies in order for medical students to learn about human anatomy. Not for this "artist" to make boots and maps.
I don't think any of the previous posters are partial to one species over another. The taking of donated human skin to make art is unethical. How can you question a society's ethics by doing it in a way that is fundamentally unethical.
I guess he has answered his own question about the callousness of man. Wow, maybe he should be on display with a plaque around his neck that reads "hypocrite."

I dont see the problem here. Better to use skin that has been donated by a human than the skin from a murdered animal.

What will be the colour change for example>
A White person skin
A Coloured person skin
A Black person skin,
What do they do with this colour viriation or do they also coloured accordenly your requirement or request? Think about this line we as humans is the closest to Our Father, it does not matter of colour or religion > the bible teach as that all human mostly was salfed and but like a mummy. This is out of the ordinary cant they think of something else to do new inventions? The body is like the bread on the table and wine-grape refreshments is God, Son body and bloo. I am a organ donor and when I no longer need my body, my wish is to have every bit of it used to improve lives here (whether plant, animal or human).
I wouldn't mind if I became a piece of art that opened minds and changed hearts. Isn't that what we spend our lives doing anyway? To know that I may continue to do so even after death makes me very happy.
After all, shouldn't we leave the world a better place for having had us in it?
Posted by: Glinda | June 1, 2009 05:23 AM
Okay, yes, I do find it gross... and it does make me queasy, honestly a little more than leather and fur etc (probably because it's less of a norm). BUT from an ethical standpoint I'd be more willing to support willingly donated human skin, than 'stolen' animal skin or fur.
I think I'll stick to my hemp trainers though ^.^
Posted by: Becky | June 1, 2009 06:25 AM
I personally think this is FANTASTIC, I mean what better way to show people that skin is skin, it doesn't matter the host. It's equally as disgusting.
People only think that humane skin is inappropiate because they have this human superiority complex. Humans tend to think that they can play god and decide which animals can live and which ones we can exploit, its pathetic not only because I am an Atheist but because we are just naked monkeys. That's it, we are just as primitive in nature as a lion. People need to remember that we are NOT surpreme beings, we are just beings. Smart yes, but I believe that our intelligence will eventually be our demise.

I think a lot of people are misconstruding my comments to fit their beliefs.
As I've said in many places here, I do NOT support the killing of an animal for just one thing - be it fur, horns, musk glands or what not.
However, If an animal is killed for food, such as beef, pork, chicken, etc., I would want them to use all of it. That is the most humane way to use an animal if it's slaughtered - less animals die. It's also environmentally sound, less energy to burn what's left.
It's almost as bad as the argument about how much grain and water is used to raise one pound of beef. You have to multiply that many times over the course of an animal's life that is allowed to live to old age.
However, people saying "Oh, human skin wasn't used by Nazis for items during the Holocaust" to ME reads as similar to ones who deny that it even existed. I can prove how Victorians used the hair from their loved ones - and yes, they were already dead - to make funeral wreaths. People can prove this with the Holocaust.
Even if history is twisted (which I doubt), condoning this as ETHICAL stoops you to a similar level IMHO. There have been stories of people who did NOT give permission for the artist to use their loved ones bodies in that traveling museum - that is very similar to what's happening now.
When you donate a body to science, it should be used for it's purpose - to further the advancement of health. When finished, the person's remains should be cremated. I'd like to see a similar thing happen to animals as well.
Posted by: Mac | June 1, 2009 02:10 PM
People who CHOOSE to have their bodies donated to science did so for when AFTER they passed on.
On the other hand, animals who are forced to have their skin ripped away from their bodies to make bags, belts and shoes is done in the most heinous ways while still alive.
With snakes for example, their heads are nailed to trees, skin is ripped apart from their bodies, then they live for several days in excruciating unimaginable pain withering around with the raw tissue from beneath their skin rubbing on the ground until they die a slow agonizing death.

Love this!!! I really hope people now see the connection between human and animal skin. The only difference is that those humans gave thier skin willingly, and animals are cruelly killed and have thier skin ripped off!! Next, I want humans kept in tiny cages for the rest of thier lives, killed for food, and endure heartless and stupid makeup tests! Let's give them some of thier own medicine! I'm so appaled by humans today that I think we animal-rights supporters should declare ourselves another species!! What do you guys think of calling ourselves the "PETA-ites"?
