- A total of 3,500 1-gallon buckets of pig manure and urine to represent the 3,500 tons of animal waste that pollute our air and water every year, courtesy of each and every average U.S. factory farm (along with giant fans to ensure that everyone gets a whiff)
- Undercover video footage taken at a pig factory farm
- Three "pigs" in narrow metal crates to represent the 3 million mother pigs who spend their short, miserable lives churning out babies, unable even to turn around or take a single step in any direction
We've submitted the permit requests and asked to set up shop next week. Now, like the neighbors of the smelly hog farm in LaGloria, Mexico, that's in the news or the folks living next to that smelly hog farm in Tewksbury, Delaware, we're just holding our breath—and hoping to get our permit so that we can bring a dose of reality to Washington's visitors, residents, and lawmakers!
Keep your fingers crossed, and hopefully we'll see you at the Capitol!

That's the way to drop the bomb!! People need to know and know it quick!! It's like a memorial, take it however you want to take it just remember to leave pigs out of your diet and put consuming animal flesh where it should be... NON-existent!!

I would like to see someone from peta comment on the people who try to make this point: as long as we treat the animal with respect and its cage free and can graze in a pasture... THEN , we can kill it and eat it. how can you treat an animal with respect it's whole life and then eat it? thats not respect, thats evil!
Posted by: chad tallman | April 29, 2009 05:58 PM
remember the million man march? why couldn't we do something like that?
Posted by: andrea | April 29, 2009 06:08 PM
And where in the capitol are these buckets of feces and urine exactly going to be put?
Posted by: Denise | April 29, 2009 06:10 PM
Truth is they probably won't let you with the pig waste because of the fear that it will contain the flu. You guys should know how dumb people can be about this stuff.

Great idea, Peta. I so hope your permit is granted.
Posted by: lynda downie | April 29, 2009 11:19 PM
Awesome! I'm guessing Wilsack, Obama's Ag Sec, is going to pull out the stops to prevent it. Beware.
Posted by: bruce | April 30, 2009 12:23 AM
Bravo!
People must learn about the way pigs are treated on factory farms...it is so sad...who can still eat pork after knowing that?
These are small steps that'll one day lead to a greener and more ethical world.
Thank U PETA!

I thought all the feces and pig manure resided within the whitehouse?
Posted by: Sean | April 30, 2009 05:22 AM
Brilliant, This swine flue has come around at the right time with Obmaa in office, i am not saying i am glad about it, but things happen for a reason, maybe more people will see and realise what really goes on in factory farms.

There was a big, organized Animal Rights march in Dc--back in the late 80s, early 90s. I was there. I still have the videotape sold by organizers somewhere on my shelves...It is time for another big march!
Posted by: Kelley | April 30, 2009 10:29 AM
PETA, don't forget to show the video of that poor sow that was hit in the head with a concrete block and then skinned while still conscious. It is especially heart-wrenching and gut-wrenching and as many people need to see it as possible.

Peta please help the pigs in Egypt!! They're slaughtering them there by the thousands by any means possible and it's a matter of time they start doing it here!! I'm so sorry this is happening!! We have to tell everyone it's NOT their fault... Please we have to stick up for them right now!! We are all they have!!
Posted by: Carla | April 30, 2009 11:29 AM
With you all the way PETA!!!
Posted by: Ricky | April 30, 2009 01:15 PM
I was at the March for Animals in '96 and it was wonderful!!! It is time for another!
Carla---I, too, am horrified with what Egypt is doing to the poor pigs!!!! Halal killing is horrible enough and in a third world country where there are no protections for any creature , now the killing will be even more violent.
I love pigs and piglets!!

I am Mexican and lets make it very clear that there are only 7 confirmed cases of swine flu deaths in mexico, the rest are either regular flu or yet to be determined. everyone is putting out different and false numbers specially in the US ballooning up the problem

i went meatless months ago and now looking back it is the best thing i ever did. this is the big one and it is all thanks to the government again for not regulating those filthy hog farms.

With you all the way PETA
Posted by: VIVIANA | April 30, 2009 03:50 PM
Great job PETA, as always! A march would be great...hoping you'll get a permit!
The very first march for the Animals in DC was on June 10, 1990 and yes, the 2nd one was in 1996.
It's really time for the public and politicians to listen to reason and do something against factory farming and the horrible killing of Animals for food.
Swine flu is indeed Babe's revenge!

Great idea but won't it be difficult to distinguish the stench of the capitol building from the pig manure odor?
I didn't expect to live long enough to witness an African-American President.. hopefully I'll witness our culture shift to a mindset that is respectful of life and no longer considers life as a commercial commodity.

To Me This Isn't Going To Make It All Better. I Don't Eat Meat, But I Don't Think Killing All Of those Pigs Are Really The Answer here. I Just Think That's Cruel To Kill All Of Those Pigs. This Shouldn't Be The Answer That Solves This Problem!

The world needs to see the truth behind the exploitation of animals and the poor. They should rename the virus "factory farm flu" since the virus probably mutated out of the factory farm waste pools that have polluted the ground water. I hope you get that permit. But I would not be surprised if the permit is not granted because I believe the government with their corporate pals will try to cover up the truth.
Posted by: Jennifer DeMuth | April 30, 2009 04:30 PM
Anything like this planned for Canada. More new people identified again today with the flu. Looks like the CFIA will not use the term "swine flu" any more as a result of industry pressure. This industrial livestock industry must be stopped.

this is the best idea i have ever heard!
GOOD LUCK!!!!

The way the world and factory farmers treat animals is CRIMINAL. The pain and suffering people cause animals thru factory farming and also thru inhumane slaughter is disgusting and it HURTS THEM AND OUR ENVIRONMENT TOO.
Posted by: Nancy | April 30, 2009 09:08 PM
that sounds like a health hazard.. PETA methods only annoy people. In fact, I know many people that DON'T want to become vegitarian because of PETA's tactics. You are only preaching to your own choir, not making progress.

Bring a pig along on a lead like a dog and show people how playful, intelligent they are, play football, let people pet the lovely pig, then let him rest in his mock hay shed to show the way pigs should be living.
Posted by: Jaquie | May 1, 2009 05:54 AM
How is the swine flu related to pig rights? I mean, I'm all for pigs being treated with respect, but the flu really doesn't have anything to do with them specifically.
Posted by: Rachel | May 1, 2009 08:10 AM
Well, good luck Peta, and good for you. Make you sure you check the pigs first for swine flu
Posted by: Roma | May 1, 2009 08:37 AM
This is insane-it was one pig farm. We have bigger fish to fry!! The world is now in a pandemic, and PETA is troubled by a pig farm. Yes, it sounds as if that one was the icing on the cake. However,I think we need to spend more time, staying away from those pigs, and the public for that matter. The White House has enough stress right now, let it be. I don't believe in cruelty to animals, but was on here over a different topic. I think PETA would be happy that people are consuming less meat, right now, anyway. I don't know about you, but I am worried about PEOPLE, ill families, our corporations falling. Why don't we think about that right now? Spend your time protesting about abuse with abortions, child abuse, and those that affect our brothers and sisters in our world.
Posted by: Katie | May 1, 2009 10:29 AM
This sounds maddddd cool. :D You guys should organize a protest during the summer in advance. I'd so travel to go if I had enough time to save! ^^
Posted by: Valerie | May 1, 2009 01:09 PM
Thank you, Ryan and Katie for your thoughtful, intellegent posts. I wish all PETA members were like you, posts like these give PETA a positive, intellegent image.

Go PETA!
Jennifer's suggestion "Factory Farm Flu" is right on. CDC confirmed years ago that MRSA, the flesh eating bacteria, is present in factory farmed pigs and employees who work in those factories (just search 'MRSA factory farm pigs' on CDC's website). MRSA kills 20,000 people each year in the US, more than AIDS. Therefore, the development of Swine Flu is no surprise.
Just...one FACTORY farm times hundreds of thousands of pigs, unnaturally crammed into several filthy buildings, fed an over use of antibiotics, several other drugs, municipal garbage (confirmed in USDA reports), and pigs who demonstrate social animal behaviors are abused beyond comprehension = an Abu Agrabe for animals, and public health hazard for humans. Now do the math: multiply those conditions times the thousands of factory farms that claim to process(?)millions of pigs annually.
What's for dinner? VEGAN!
Posted by: D. Magerck | May 1, 2009 02:13 PM
OH Thank you Magerck !!! Ryan and Katie need to do a little research such as you have done and they will realize that this DOES affect them in a really big way !!! Go visit a factory farm (if your heart and stomach can handle it) and see for yourself. Jennifer is right on too about the government and their corporate pals.
Posted by: Nancy | May 1, 2009 04:02 PM
PETA, this was very well written, it gives a good message that we should stop eating meat, but swine flu, despite the name, you CAN NOT catch it from eating pork. It was proven scientifically. But we DO need to stop eating meat!
Posted by: Maddi | May 1, 2009 10:49 PM
I think this is a most awesome idea!!! PETA makes me proud!
Posted by: john649 | May 2, 2009 12:20 AM
whos ready to start a protest in Seattle/Olympia!?>>>??? If i had the money I would buy a ticket down to dc and be there! go peta!!

Did the capitol police approve the demonstration, or turn it down as I feared? Any updates? Pics?
Posted by: Bruce | May 4, 2009 09:30 AM
Any news????
I want to be there!
I want CHANGE!
Posted by: Giorgia | May 4, 2009 11:06 PM
That is SUCH a good idea! Please do keep us all posted.
Posted by: ceci | May 5, 2009 01:01 AM
Yes, PETA. Do it! The time is now -- before the American public sets its sights once again on the NBA and NASCAR.
It's not about cruelty to animals -- it's about these mega corporations allowed to create inhumane virus farms that could one day wipe out poeple's children. That's the angle you need to reach America.
Posted by: John | May 5, 2009 03:02 AM
I am especially glad that you are recreating the pig crates, as I suggested you do at every convention, expo and festival you display a booth at. Battery cages with "chickens" in them wouldn't be a bad idea either, and veal crates if possible. People need to SEE the truth (and now smell it too!) Go PETA!
Posted by: Dave Bernazani | May 5, 2009 10:01 AM
Good comments everyone, but swine flu does not come from pigs. Don't make yourselves sound like idiots. John, like I said, you don't get viruses like swine flu from pig farms. Great idea with the manure. Sounds like a good way to get arrested. There's bound to be a better way.
Posted by: john | May 5, 2009 03:15 PM
So let me get this straight.. You're demonstrating why people shouldn't hurt pigs by.. hurting pigs? Genius.
Posted by: Reid | May 5, 2009 05:07 PM
LET ME KNOW WHEN THIS WILL HAPPEN BY EMAIL, I'LL DEFINATELY BE THERE. WHAT HAPPENS TO THESE INTELLIGENT, BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS IS NOTHING SHORT OF "TORTURE". THE MOTHERS EVEN HAVE TO WITNESS THEIR BABIES HAVING THEIR TESTICLES AND TAILS CUT OFF WITH NO PAINKILLERS GIVEN. ONE "WORKER" CLAIMS HE GOT THE STEEL ROD USED TO BEAT THEM, ABOUT THREE FEET INTO THE VAGINA OF PIG, WHILE ANOTHER CLAIMS THE SAME THING EXCEPT THIS PERVERT RAPED THE ANIMAL ANALLY!!
I'LL DO WHATEVER IS NECESSARY! LET ME KNOW WHEN, PLEASE.
BY THE WAY, KATIE, WHO THE HELL ARE YOU TO TELL ANYONE WHERE THEIR COMPASSION SHOULD LAY? IF YOU WANT TO HELP HUMANS, MAYBE EVEN SOME OF THESE PERVERTS, GO RIGHT AHEAD!
Posted by: June Marie | May 5, 2009 10:12 PM
Right on PETA I am with you ALL the WAY and will be there
in spirit. PLEASE proceed with
displaying the crates that
poor female pigs are soo cruelly trapped in their
WHOLE short lives.. It makes
me soo sad and cry everytime
I think of it.Especially when I hear how they are beaten to go back in the cages and resist with all the strength they can muster. Sooo tragic.Pigs are intelligent as
small children and are forced to just sit in their cart all day and not even be able to turn around. I am all for
OUTLAWING the Factory Farms.!!

I am an avid animal right supporter, animal ADOPTER, not a buyer, and have been Vegan for almost 5 years, Vegetarian for 20. I try to be POSITIVE with people I meet who ask me about my diet. I wish PETA was working harder to show the good, and postive side of animal rights. One comment above mentioned bringing a piglet with you to show how playful and sweet they are. Why can't you do more of that? The shock value gets old. It couldn't hurt to try a new tactic.
