Here's the deal: A Buffalo man is all upset that two Brooklyn entrepreneurs plan to put a slaughterhouse in the back of the building in which his Subway franchise sits. He says that the odors creeping in from the slaughterhouse would scare away his customers. We see it a bit differently.

We're the last ones who want to hide slaughterhouses where nobody will have to think about—or actually see and hear—the animals they're blithely eating, so we've written to Buffalo to say that PETA supports the creation of this slaughterhouse, with just a couple of modifications: Erect a glass wall to allow the public to see the terrified animals who are being slaughtered, install a sound system to broadcast the animals' screams, and open the facility to school and other tours with an elevated walkway running right through it.

I suspect that this could hurt business at a lot of restaurants in the Greater Buffalo area. But buck up, Subway man. What you lose in meatball and cheesesteak sub sales, you gain on the Veggie Delite sandwiches and perhaps by adding a Gardein "chicken" sub or other super-delish vegetarian alternatives!

PETA, you rock!!!!

If only they'd build it just as you request. People could then experience a sensory overload and understand what we're doing to other living beings... for a "mouthful of flesh".

No one does it better than you!

Thanks!

PETA, I Love you for taking a stand for what is humane and for what is the right thing to do. Keep up the work, we are behind you here in CA!

Rock on Peta, you are my heros.....I can't stand people who refuse to look at the ugly side of life...for fear they may half to get off their ass and do something to make it less ugly....I am a semi veggie...who belives that the animals that are used for meat, should be humanely treated, raised and euthanized humanely..no matter what the cost..if it is done that way, nothing suffers in any way shape or form, at least that is a victory in some way...

I remember when I was in eigth grade and taking a few high school classes that one of the yearly requirements for a science class in the high school was a trip to the slaughterhouse. I refused to go, and was given an alternate assignment, and boy was I glad.

When the people came back from the slaughterhouse, some actually had blood splatter on their shirts. Not a lot, but there were a few visible spots. Apparently one of the cows didn't die right away so they used the bolt gun three or four times to "stun" her. It turned out she was pregnant with a nearly full term calf.

After that episode the yearly trips were cancelled. A lot of us from that class are vegetarians now. I was nearly one before that, but after hearing the horror story that I knew was bound to happen, I cut out all meat.

We also found out later that the plant refused to allow tours to anyone else after that. Big shock, right?

While I would never go into a slaughterhouse, I believe that this may actually be a good idea. I hope they build it the way you have askeed them to, because I know from experience that this in your face form of exposure changes minds. Keep up the good work!!!

i just happen to come across this Peta Site. I'd like to know how i can help spread the awareness of the cruelty that is happening to all of these animals and become involved wiyh helping to STOP it!!!

I honestly don't think that backing this would help. I think that even more animals will just die. Why support a slaughterhouse anyway? :/

i never thought id see peta back a slaughter house but it would raise awareness

Posted by: mitchell | April 23, 2009 06:54 PM

i see your point here but why are you supportting a slaghterhouse if were agienst them then encourage they do this but don't support them their gonna kill helpless animals this isn't to be supported

I agree with kitty. It sounds like something from a horror film anyways.

There are people you can hire from the horror film industry, who might be able to help you make a faux version of this concept, where no animals would be hurt.

Like that ad you did with a girl holding a faux dead dog. Very disturbing.
