Happy birthday to you!
Happy birthday to you!
Quit slaughtering the seals!
Happy birthday to you!
Or at least that's what I like to think these caring people were singing when they stopped by Prime Minister Stephen Harper's home to deliver a few birthday balloons for his big 5-0.

I live in Guatemala and wanted to tell you how proud and thankful I am that you are able to do this, specially the children. Hope the next generation will be really aware of animal abuse.

PETA, you have drawn attention away from the seal hunt by focusing on our Prime Minister. Other animal advocacy groups have persuaded the European Union to ban products culled from the seal slaughter which, tragically, comes from specific provinces, territories, and peoples indigenous to Canada whose "traditions" compel them to butcher seals. I suggest that you abstain from making PM Harper your target, and instead, focus on the economical value the seal slaughter has, in prior years, brought to Canada. As a Canadian, I am horribly ashamed of the number, the manner, and the continuation of "cultivating" our young seals. My government contends (to this day) that the manner of slaughter is humane (but we all know it is not--they seek to preserve the integrity of their lucrative fur so no blood or stain must attach--bludgeon them so no bullet holes mar the fur) but observers have proven that the manner of slaughter is, in some ways, more horrendous than that meted out to alleged "food" animals. Don't "harp on Harper"--get after our Senators, MP's and lobbyists at whose feet "the buck stops."

Good for the people willing to tell Harper to stop the seal atrocities. Hopefully, before his next birthday seals will be left alone to live out their lives.
STOP KILLING SEALS FOR FUR!!

What I am finding is people could give a rats a**. I am sickened by our animal species to no end. Especially the "Christians" Of this world.

Unfortunately, that's the problem with being decent folk who don't go commit atrocities.
Millions of beings are having monstrous attacks upon them, even skinned alive, and some balloons are given to someone. Yeah, I get it, but come on, perspective?
As in, unless people start fighting with weapons and not balloons, then these victims are not being stood up for and protected. Look at them dying in agony with no shots fired to save them.
Did balloons stop Hitler and every other monster? Would you hand out balloons to someone murdering you neighor's family?
I mean, that's the problem. People who are not of a nature to kill and inflict horrible wounds are only harming the victims and allowing the holocaust by not attacking and forcibly stopping the terrorists. A case can surely be made that that such inner weakness is an outrageous and shameful evil.
If it were not for war, you would have Hitler and every monster running the planet and inflicting atrocities on billions. Oh, well, we do have that! Just look at the seals and all the other victims!
But it can't just be one or a few people (who would get branded nutjobs and terrorists for standing up for the victims). It needs to be a large, sustainable amount of people willing to die for a right cause and strong enough in their hearts to not put the life of the attacker over the life of the victim.

Hey Jill: I can appreciate the first part of your comment, I feel the same way. But please don't blame the Christians for what happens to the other animals. Take a look at www.catholic-animals.org, Catholic Concern for Animals and see how a group of Catholics are trying to end the oppression of all creatures. Get educated!

I am an embarrassed Canadian citizen. Such a travesty.

Matthew 5:9: Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Thank you, Jill, for the blessing on all the Christians!!

Awh, that veg'un (cute phrase, by the way) makes me smile =)
PM Harper, we voted for you to be in power yet again. Please respect the wishes of the people and outlaw the seal hunt.

I'm with you, Jill.

Animal welfare is an emotional and stressful topic for those who have a heart for any critter.
Who can stand to watch footage from one of those horrific scenes on the ice?
But, to conduct this 'appeal' in front of the family home of the Prime Minister, and then issue this series of photos, PETA may well have turned off the financial support of many, many more folks, who might have considered contributing to their causes.
The Prime Minister's birthday has nothing to do with why some in Canada still want to have any part of a seal hunt.
There will be any number of local rescue groups who would happily accept our donations, with no ties to it around politics.
The seals will continue to pay the price for how this was handled. That is the greater sadness.

That right there, is brainwashing. You should wait until a child is old enough to understand what a slaughter is before telling them to go protest one.

Hey Canada, while you at it how bout a mention for all the cat and dogs skinned alive in the Chinese Fur farms, look at your PETA website . These furs are lining your clothes and toys and in Canada you dont even have to label this vile product. Is the fur from an animal thats entire life was a living nightmare on your jacket hood. Id rather be a Canadian seal anyday. At least I would have some enjoyment in my life before losing my coat

That's exactly my question Salogma, why was Harper re-elected if you are claiming majority Canadians are against the seal slaughter????? The issue never came up or maybe Canadians don't give a crap. Nobody has been able to answer my question on this.
Tasha, seal for seals has every right to express his/her opinion. That does not make him/her a "nutjob". Maybe he/she is just frustrated and fed up with all the cruelty he/she has seen in this lifetime. Sometimes it is necessary to be extreme because certainly reason has not worked!

Salogma,
It doesn't matter what political party is elected in Canada, they will still peddle that old classic "it is humane and well regulated" like a bunch of parrots. What will work is a referendum on the matter, and I think that instead of wasting our time with petitions and billboards and what have you, that this is what we should be working for. Now.

After seeing Stephen Harper on the news today, I can say that I am now embarrassed and mad to be Canadian. He DOES NOT speak for me and a vast majority of Canadians when he says that Canada supports sealers. He will have to come out of the stone ages eventually, hopefully sooner than later for the seals sake.
