Emily Deschanel's All About Animals and the Environment

As a huge fan of Bones, I was giddy to learn that Emily Deschanel is an environmentalist who puts her money where her mouth is—literally—by eating a vegan diet.
We couldn't think of a better person to feature smack-dab in the middle of "Meat's Not Green" Week than Emily and, luckily, she was able to take time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions.
Here Emily is in her own words:
Do you have any animal companions? I don't have any animal companions right now. My amazing dog Snookie passed away a year ago. She was 17 years old. I miss her. She was super sweet and smart. I'm not ready for another animal in my life right now, especially because I wouldn't have the time to take proper care of them (we work 16- to 17-hour days). I look forward to the day I can bring another animal into my home. They enrich our lives so much! Of course, I would adopt!
What made you decide to go vegan? In high school, a teacher screened the documentary "Diet for a New America" based on the book of the same name. It exposes the dirty business of factory farms: the cruelty that the animals experience, the dangers of a meat-based diet to your health, and the devastating environmental impact. I decided to go vegetarian on the spot with the intention to go completely vegan when I was ready. It took me two years. I've never looked back.
What are some of your favorite vegetarian foods? I love anything Dave Anderson makes at Madeleine Bistro in Los Angeles, and I love the food at Candle 79 in New York City. I'm obsessed with cookies from Sun Flour Bakery.
I don't really cook for myself right now since my schedule is insane. I look forward to the day I can pick up my Veganomicon cookbook and go to town!! I also indulge in raw chocolate on a daily basis.
If you could make people wake up to one issue involving animals or one particular form of cruelty to animals, what would it be and what would you wish for? In my experience, the issue that is avoided the most is [raising] animals for food, specifically factory farms. Nothing makes me more upset than when someone says they don't want to know about the horrors going on. Ten billion animals every year in North America have to live and die in horrible ways; the least we can do is hear about it. I have hope, though. More and more people are going veg and vegan. Look at the popularity of Skinny Bitch and PETA as an organization and how they have changed people's minds about animals and food. It is so much better than it was almost 16 years ago when I made the switch to being vegan.

I love Emily Deschanel! And I love Bones!
I have to admit that she was a big part on me going vegan because I saw she did an event with PETA on thanksgiving and I was like "wow, I should check out what peta is", and here I am now, vegan and very happy about it! Thanks Emily!!!

I have been a vegetarian for three years now and have tried to become vegan twice but always go back to eating little bits of dairy mainly because of the social ridicule. :-/ Every day I seem to get drilled and laughed at for what I am eating. Anyone else experience this? --living among ALL meat-eaters?

I'm so glad there is finally an article/video on here with Emily Deschanel. Not only has she herself had some impact on my choosing to go veg, but Bones did as well.
Kristine, in response to your remark about ridicule, yes I too experience it all the time. Most people understand my vegetarian diet since its pretty popular, but no one seems to be able to accept the fact that I would like to become a vegan when I can. It doesn't help that I'm not in a very veg-friendly city. Hang in there, people will suck less some day.

Personally, I'm only vegetarian, but my husband is vegan, and we live in cow country, lol. In Texas, even being vegetarian is still "weird" to a lot of people, and we definitely get odd looks and comments when people find out he's vegan.

I am not a vegan, however, I am fast getting there. I love Emily Deschanel and her character, and Bones is my favourite TV series.
I may not be able to become a total vegan as I had Pancreatic Cancer, underwent chemo and radiation, and am also a diabetic and epileptic. I have tried eating less and less meat, however, there are times that it is impossible.
However, this is NOT about me, but the fact that I would like very much to become a vegan; I love BONES and Emily
Deschanel, and I do agree with her beliefs.
Thank you,
Anhri is my username and the one I would like to use on here.

Eating vegan among meat eaters is, often, a matter of respect for each other. When I went vegan four years ago (at age 56), my in-laws said nothing, but they have all abided by my decision. At family meals, there is always something for me - they have creamed broccoli, mine is steamed (and much tastier). I've gotten to the point where I cringe when I see them eat meat because I know how bad it is for their health. I don't preach, but every so often, I throw in a little comment.

Really? No Meat or Dairy of any kind? Is this really the answer? I'm just not convinced that there is anything wrong with eating a healthful, balanced diet that includes organically grown and raised meat such as bison. I never eat fast food, and I give it my all to not buy overly processed foods that take a lot of packaging or production. I try to buy locally as much as I can, and I try to give back by helping others. The weirdest phrase in this odd culture we're in is that we should "save the world." The world needs no saving. Just us.

She can still adopt a dog, my dogs sleep all day and rarely need to be taken out. My little dog was rescued and the family who had her before us had her litter box trained, so you can litter box train a puppy. Now of course-cause we're lazy- she LOVES being outdoors. I mean she doesn't live in an apartment so you CAN have a pet, logistically, but i think she was more or less talking about having time to give the animal love and affection. :D

I've always loved Emily! I actually didn't find out about her until after I found out about Zooey. I think it's so cool that they are both vegan, that way they always have eachother for support. I've been a vegetarian for seven years now and I will never go back.
Hey if anyone wants good vegan treats or ideas you should read this months issue of self magazine with zooey deschanel on the cover, she has some really good ones in there.

Animals were created by God for our enjoyment and use. I will NOT stop eating meat. Emily: You are beautiful and I love bones but don't believe in what you're promoting! PETA LOVERS: you're a strange bunch!

I have been a vegetarian for two years and it is possibly the best choice of my life. She was not the reason, but later on when i was considering going back to eating meat i read on her biography that she was vegan-and her being one of my heros-i decided to keep trying. She has made a major impact on my life. Thanks Emily!

I also am a big fan of "Bones". We first watched the Show because of Booth, "Angel", but fell in love and cried with the actors in the show. We miss Zack. I am also a big fan of Emily's jewerlry. I am not sure who picks the pieces out, but I think they have good taste. I am a strong lover of animals (cats) and volunteer my time with Farel Cats and Feline Ass. But like my cats, I do love meat, but I do have a alot of friends that are vegetarians and have no problem about it. Please keep up with show, I hope for manny yeatrs of seeing more of it.

Im all for being vegetarian and vegan, but I'd love to see the study she cites which says that farm animals are the biggest contributors to the greenhouse effect. In fact Im almost 100% certain that's completely false. Coal fired power plants are the biggest contributors. It's pretty low to stoop to such tactics.

i watched a video on factory farming because i saw this video from emily...i have been vegetarian for almost a year and i sometimes go vegan but im having a hard time with that since im the only vegetarian in my family. Iv'e never rele liked meat anyways so it wasn't hard for me to make the choice but once i saw the facotry farm documentory, i actually cried and i became a vegetarian permanetly.
Thank you Emily for being a great supporter!!
