With the Canadian seal slaughter about to begin, we're doing everything we can to get it stopped. Hundreds of thousands of baby seals are murdered in this annual massacre. Can you imagine the horror a mother seal experiences when her baby's skull is smashed in right in front of her? We can't either, so this week, we're giving away a limited-edition plush seal pup to help remind the world to hug seals, not club them.

Comment below to win or click here to order a baby seal plush now.
Seal plush

How do you win? Post a comment below letting us know what you're doing to help stop the seal slaughter. The response that shows the most initiative will win a plush seal pup.

The contest ends on March 25, 2009, and we'll contact the winner on March 27, 2009. Be sure to read our privacy policy and terms and conditions, as you're agreeing to both by commenting.

Not feeling lucky? You can go ahead and buy a plush pup now. Or two or three. No need to feel guilty for splurging—all the money goes to a good cause!

I will be attending a demonstration in NYC for the first time! I am very eager and excited for this Sunday to arrive. I hope that I can lend my voice to help these poor innocent seals.

i ordered the save the seals action pack and i've been asking friends to sign the petition, as well as handing out the fliers. i absolutely looove the stickers, it's so hard to part with them, but i've been sticking them in fun places and giving them to my friends <3

Posted by: Erin H | March 11, 2009 10:38 AM

I sent the email petition on PETA a few times. I also sent it to my friends so they could send one themselves. I made a bebo layout with the picture of the seal saying 'club soda not seals' and I'm in the middle of writing a blog about the horror of seal clubbing. I also put the PETA video 'Canada's baby seal slaughter' on my bebo page.

I have a bumper sticker on th back of my car that says Club Sandwiches, Not Seals.

Here is a suggestion for anyone in Canada who can afford to do this: Sponsor billboards to be put up along all major highways with a picture of a baby seal on the left and this text on the right: NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO KILL FOR A LIVING! HIRE A SEALER AWAY FROM THE SLAUGHTER!

Posted by: Rev. Meg Schramm | March 11, 2009 11:01 AM

Thanks to the PETA website I was able to help stop the Seal Slaughter with this email:
(written 2/23/09)
Dear Mr. John Furlong, Mr. Michael Chambers and The Honorable Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Please watch this video of hunters bashing baby seals to pieces here http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/Prefs.asp?video=canada_seal_slaughter_vancouver2010_peta&chgpref=1
Watching it for more than a minute would make any normal human being sick to their stomach. It is COMPLETELY unnecessary and down right cruel. This is a very simple thing to stop and will end so much suffering.
Furthermore, people who can club an innocent animal may very well be violent and unstable; so after you ban the seal slaughter you should have these former "employees" psychologically evaluated.
With the upcoming hosting of the winter Olympics, banning this seal torture would be a wonderful way to promote the greatness of your country. Please consider it.
Sincerely,
Laura Lewis

I've posted links to the PETA web site relating to the seal cull on my Facebook page and my Windows Live Space.

Posted by: DomBurf | March 11, 2009 11:26 AM

1 - I've informed myself regarding this atrocity.

2 - I've informed my friends and family and referred them to the appropriate documentation.

3 - I will not be attending the Olympics unless Canada makes some changes.

4 - I've written to the MPP in my City, asking him to work for the protection of the Seals. I will continue to contact him until I receive a response. If no response is received, or if he is not willing to represent me as a single individual, I will start a group within my community and urge him to reconsider.

*NOTE* I am Canadian and I am against the Seal hunt. I make this known at every opportunity.

Posted by: Andréa | March 11, 2009 11:32 AM

What an adorable seal! I'm doing all I can - writing to everyone; letters to the prime minister, senators, mp's, friends and family. I'm sending emails to everyone I know and forwarding petitions to end the seal hunt. I'm also taking some stickers I got from IFAW and handing them out ot people and talking to them about the realities of the seal hunt.
I'm Canadian, and I really hope that the seal hunt will end once and for all.

Posted by: Aneliese | March 11, 2009 11:41 AM

I constantly talk to everyone I see about "Canada's Shame". I tell everyone about the yearly massacre/slaughter, about how disgusting it is and how bad it hurts me. I let all my friends know about boycotting red lobster and canadian seafood to help end the slaughter. I have a facebook cause to help promote the boycott and it is growing very rapidly. My friends actually get annoyed about how much i talk about the boycott. I show complete strangers seal slaughter videos on my cellphone (and it still makes me cry). I love the seals so much and there is never enough i can do to help them.

Posted by: Daniel McCauley | March 11, 2009 11:44 AM

I'm forwarding the Facebook petition against the seal slaughter to all my friends!
http://apps.facebook.com/causes/petitions/84?m=580de22f&page=1 Those seal-haters need to be stopped.

Posted by: Lily | March 11, 2009 11:52 AM

I've been promoting PETA and their campaigns for years now. I do not wear fur, eat meat, or any other things that these seals and many other animals are killed for. I recently wrote a blog on my tumblr about the Canadian seal slaughter, and encouraged others to become informed and do all they can to help. I also recently signed PETA's petition to the Olympic committee myself and sent it to over 50 people via facebook and emails. I've also signed other petitions on the issue in the past. I hope that by being an activist and spreading the word more people will become informed and take steps to help end this awful massacre!

Posted by: Leigh Ann Gutierrez | March 11, 2009 12:15 PM

PETA please send a plush pup to every senator in Canada and especially a big one to Stephen Harper.

I wrote a letter to Stephen Harper two years ago of course to response. I've forwarded information about the annual seal hunt to all my friends and family. I'm planning to write to the Winter Olympics Committee asking them to help persuade the PM.

Posted by: mlo | March 11, 2009 12:34 PM

I have read and tried to inform and encourage others to petition against the seal slaughter. I also asked for Peta shirts for my birthday if anything and received two and a Vegcooking.com pen from my mom! I am working on saving and setting aside my own money to add towards campaigns, merchandise, etc myself.

I will be a dancing "seal" wearing a trench coat, sunglasses and a faux seal hat, with "Harpers Seals" on Sunday, March 15th in Ottawa, at 1PM. We will be dancing and doing an air band to several songs that have a relevant message - for example, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" by the Culture Club (check out the promotional video on Facebook). After the show, we will be going on a peaceful walk to the European Commission at 45 O'Connor St. in Ottawa, with all of the spectators and volunteers, with signs saying things like "Moms against the commercial seal hunt", "Taxpayers against...", "Social workers against...", etc.

Posted by: Michele | March 11, 2009 02:16 PM

I had tee shirts made for myself and friends. They read " Not Dekey Canada... Stop killing the Baby Seals, Eh?". We get lots of comments about them from people. We need to spread the word.

Posted by: Teresa G | March 11, 2009 02:50 PM

I spread the word to everybody! Honestly - in 1969 at the age of 12 was when I first heard about then slaughter of baby seals and I was SO upset, appalled and frustrated to do anything to stop it. I told my friends about it, but most were simply too young to grasp the atrocity. I almost wish I was, too.
I fully support Peta and am grateful there are so many ethical and caring souls on this earth. Please EVERYBODY keep spreading the word!

Posted by: Mary | March 11, 2009 02:55 PM

Posted by: SANDY | March 11, 2009 06:21 PM

Well, to start, i made countless flyers/brochures about the awarness and cruelty about seal slashing. I chose seal slashing as my essay topic for school, and soon as i get it back, it will be going on a blog site.

I convinced members of school council to hold a short assembly to raise awarness and funds for seal slashing.

- Sending emails to everyone saying to pass it on.

thats it for now, i plan to do way more... i may be very young, i still made some difference...

Posted by: Leah | March 11, 2009 06:39 PM

I'm helping to spread the word.

Posted by: shannon Baas | March 11, 2009 06:57 PM

I love seals! I have several stuffed seals at home, and i tell all my friends at school to tell others about the cruelty these animals go through. I made a petiton to save seals, i have made a pledge to not wear ANY kind of fur, and I am trying my best to convince my parents to help also. I hope to raise awarness at my school, as i am the student concil president there.

Posted by: Lorenzo Bright | March 11, 2009 07:42 PM

I've emailed my friends and my mom's friends to alert them and have them send the email to the Canadian officials, I have called some of my friends to ask that they send an email to request the slaughter be stopped and am hoping and praying for the best. I heard about this a few years ago and it reduced me to tears, and I feel great I can help to do something about it now.

Posted by: Julie | March 11, 2009 08:18 PM

I thought that it was against the law to do this now.Boy did you open mind to this heartless act against nature

Posted by: Tammy | March 11, 2009 09:31 PM

I sent emails to friends & family letting them know about the atrocities happening to the baby seals. I donated to causes set on fighting this cruel act. I even got shirts that spread the message.

Posted by: Mayrette | March 11, 2009 09:56 PM

I only learned about the seal slaughter last year and it shocked me. This year I am trying my hardest to prevent it, I'm making all my friends and family aware of the seal killings too. I am also encouging them to buy fur. I have made a video about this seal slaughter on youtube and I've sighed many petitions agenst this cruel act. Another thing I've done was start a fundraser in school and use the donate the money to stop the inhumane deaths of these poor creatures. It takes a weak man to kill one of these animals, and we all know it.

Posted by: Emmie | March 11, 2009 10:36 PM

I have signed the petition and passed it on to my friends on facebook, I wrote to the link you had on the website and am continuing to spread the word about the protest to friends and family. If I win the seal, I will do a dance on you tube holding the seal to promote the cause! I wouldn't be ashamed to dance for such a good cause! I hope I win!

Winning a baby seal would be important, good thing to talk about when people ask why you have a baby seal on your desk. It always looks so heartbreaking when they are being killed, do we really need fur coats when it has to be taken off of a baby seal? We are wearing the type of coat that God wanted us to wear, short hairs in most spaces, curly hair in others. We do not neat to wear the skin of baby seals!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Sharon Davis | March 25, 2009 04:16 PM

Posted by: Catherine KingChuparkoff | March 25, 2009 07:57 PM

Dear PETA, words cannot express how my heart shattered into a million pieces to hear that yet again, another annual seal slaughter in Canada was to take place.
You would think that in this 21st century we would have evolved and moved forward, but unfortunately barbarianism (and certainly of its lowest kind) is still very much at present.
Thank you PETA for recognising this, for spreading the awareness, and for evoking hope in us that one day we can make a difference and stop this murder for good. Till then, let each and every one of us spread the word...
With all my love and support,
from Down Under, Australia.
