this is discusting people should not be aloud to kill animals they are lving breathing things they are the same as humans except with diffrent looks that us if we let this happen its murder so if its ok to kill animals and get nothing then if another person kills some one nothing should happen to them this is MURDER and last time i checked murder was against the law's !!!!!!!

Very powerful blog and picture. People who think that the slaughter of seals is just fine and dandy and should still keep going on need to see this picture.

Posted by: Aneliese | March 16, 2009 01:28 PM

That poor baby...anyone who would do this to any animal is considered a monster by me. All that damage so some nasty women can hang up this sweet lil' seal's rotting flesh in her closet. I'm disgusted!

Posted by: Marlar in KS | March 16, 2009 03:11 PM

can you imagine if they did this to a human?..
no.. didn't think so..
why do people feel it's okay to treat animals this way.. and not so for humans?? ie. okay to treat some species extremely barbarically and cruelly but draw the line when it comes to their own species..
quite despicable really.. what does it say in the bible..oh yes.. i) thou shall not kill (but okay to kill animals.. and ii) treat others as you would treat yourself.. (yes.. hmm.. yeah great).. was there some small print in the bible somewhere that says.. our teachings excludes animals???
now you see why I have a very half hearted very luke warm verging onto cold/tepid belief in the so called 'holy bible'..

Posted by: beth | March 16, 2009 03:57 PM

This photo should replace the famous cute baby seal picture to show just how sickening and immoral this whole business is. People who use these skins are as guilty as those that perpetrate the slaughter.

Posted by: Maureen | March 16, 2009 06:10 PM

I think everyone takes it a little far. Seal hunting happens because of lack of enviroment and lack of food. Has anyone seen what happens when there is a lack of food? Look at the kids in Africa. They don't get food and they look all messed up. Plus, Animals will eat that seal, giving FOOD back to the rest of the animals. Really, its no differnt from a sea lion attacking, killing, and eating it.

Posted by: Floyd | March 16, 2009 06:26 PM

The end result of evil.

Posted by: SparkyGump | March 16, 2009 07:03 PM

who could do something like this? whoever does this should be ashamed of themselves. i hope whoever buys this baby's fur, gets their skin ripped off!!

Posted by: Emily | March 16, 2009 07:33 PM

this is absolutely discusting and cruel and unecessary, you guys are doing a great job advertising these rights because animals deserve a happy life just like us

Posted by: sally | March 16, 2009 07:47 PM

I puked when I saw this its so sad the person who did should die the same way poor baby people make me sick who do this.

Posted by: Erin | March 16, 2009 10:53 PM

Anyone that hasnt seen the slaughter of any animal needs to. It might just change your whole outlook on life. It did mine.

Posted by: Heather Johnson | March 16, 2009 11:08 PM

Boycott ALL Canadian seafood in protest to these murders! Hit these bastards in the wallet where they feel it the most!

Posted by: Chris | March 16, 2009 11:51 PM

Evil, disgusting morons. How can anyone do that to another living creature? How do they sleep after doing something like that? They deserve at the very least to be locked up. Absolutely disgusting. We're humans, we should know better. Since when do we need fur, anyways?

Posted by: Lisa | March 17, 2009 05:11 AM

That is terrible!! How could someone do this to an innocent animal??

Posted by: Ammi | March 17, 2009 08:08 AM

Doug and Floyd, I barely even know what to say to you - you are both clearly uncompassionate and ignorant people.

The commercial seal hunt has NOTHING to do with lack of food! And comparing this to what a sea lion would do? Seriously? The sea lion does not profit financially from this, and does not do this for FASHION - the sealers leave most of the carcass behind because the harp seals are killed primarily for their pelts.

Humans ARE animals, and if you knew anything about true conservation you would realize that humans are actually interfering with the balance of nature - get some basic science knowledge.

Oh look, I did know what to tell you after all...

Posted by: Michele | March 17, 2009 10:22 AM

In the dictionary under the words "greed" and "evil" should be this picture. I cannot fathom how a being with a soul could be responsible for this monstrosity. This is COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY AND UNACCEPTABLE. We're humans; we're supposed to act CIVILIZED and set an example for the world. I hope the perpetrators remember that karma is a b**ch!

Posted by: Katie | March 17, 2009 10:55 AM

Humans are repulsive creatures!

Posted by: Shauna Saling | March 17, 2009 11:20 AM

Humans can be repulsive creatures, but humans can be great creatures too, it all depends on what you chose to be, and when we chose not to hate or hurt then we are doing the right thing, lets do in our life and with others the best we can do and be. Life is so precious wherever it is, if we do not respect life, we don't respect ourselves and then we put a curse in ourselves, and we will not progress.
It is sad to see how cave man we can be in the 20 century.

Posted by: Gisela | March 17, 2009 02:37 PM

R.E. FLOYD'S COMMENT: I think everyone takes it a little far. Seal hunting happens because of lack of environment and lack of food.
...Dear Floyd, it IS the human race that is taking over these seals natural habitat and killing all of the seals food sources for society's outrageously unnecessary meat needs. SO you are saying its OK to take everything away from them and then murder them because... well we can? ummm...I don't think so!

Posted by: marlar in KS | March 17, 2009 03:04 PM

After seeing that picture I'm convinced that humans are the devils of the earth and animals are the tortured souls.

Posted by: Brien Comerford | March 17, 2009 04:51 PM

Just goes to show ya that we "Humans" have no idea of who we are, what we are, where we are and why we are here. It's only going to get worse before it gets better so you had all brace yourselves.

Posted by: Peace | March 17, 2009 06:53 PM

Humans can control their actions, therefore, this is completely unnecessary unless for survival or something like that.If another animal DOES kill and eat the seal[shark, sea lion, etc],it's because of INSTINCT and because it's part of nature.Humans don't have to do this.

Posted by: Emily | March 17, 2009 07:01 PM

As a vegetarian of nearly 20 years, i find any form of cruelty to animals sickening. The picture above really hits home and fills my heart with sadness and ANGER!!! How can people be so cruel and heartless? To all animal lovers out there, keep writing, keep fighting and most of all... keep careing. God bless you all!

Posted by: RICHARD BENTLEY | March 17, 2009 07:05 PM

I cannot fathom why the government thinks this behavior is acceptable and who is doing this!! They need some serious psychiatric care!! As the saying goes, the more people I get to know, the more I love animals.

Posted by: Rhonda Lavallee | March 17, 2009 07:05 PM

i think that people that do this stuff r prity stupid! i am only 12 and i know better. there should be a law for this nasty, dispicable, horrible, thing on earth! (EVER!)

Posted by: nathan | March 17, 2009 07:54 PM

This is sad. Absolutely horrible. My friend told me about this a year ago and I never saw any pictures so I never knew the intensity of these beatings. It makes me wanna cry when I see the poor animals being beat for some stupid reason.

Posted by: Kelsey | March 17, 2009 07:57 PM

MICHELE-THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING WHAT I WANTED TO SAY TO FLOYD,I couldn't think of the words for my disgust for his lack of caring. By the way, animals don't come by ship to kill and then get money for their killing of another animal. May God Bless those poor little BABY SEALS!

Posted by: SHARI | March 18, 2009 01:34 AM

You poor, poor little victim of the merciless, cold-blooded heart of selfish homo sapiens.
How can anyone justify this unspeakable brutality?
How can anyone look upon this tortured little seal and defend the sealers right to do this to her?
It's shame not honor to feed your family by the blood of the innocent.

Posted by: lynda downie | March 18, 2009 02:49 AM

tBeth: People have been doing this to each other since the beginning of time, and they continue to do so today. Google the Holocaust, Darfur, Rwanda, genocide, and any war in history, especially the 20th century, if you have trouble believing me. Doug, Floyd, and Gisela: I'm with you. Three voices of reason in a blog where most fire off comments without hitting the mental "pause" button to allow themselves to think. And Katie: seal hunters hunt because it pays well. It allows them to buy food to feed themselves and their families, so yes it has something to do with food, as well as clothing, shelter, and education; you know, all those things you are probably taking for granted as your right rather than the privledges they are. If there were another job in exsistance that paid as much as sealing does and allowed them as much time with their families, they might leave the industry. And once again, Beth...we don't draw the line when it comes to our own species...somewhere in this world right now horrors that you cannot imagine in your worst nightmares are being committed by humans on other humans.

Posted by: Re. Meg Schramm | March 18, 2009 09:59 AM

Rev. Meg are you the same person that put down circuses and now you're spewing S*** from your mouth?? Come on listen to what you are saying here!! NO money in the world could justify THE MURDER of these innocent VICTIMS!!! If that was to be done on a human for profit, you'ld be hung!! And you call yourself a Reverend?? Wake up people!!! We need to change they way we are thinking untill it's too late!!!

Posted by: Carla | March 18, 2009 12:02 PM

Rev. Meg,

Sealing does not pay well—at least in Canada. Sealers are fishermen, and sealing revenues account for only about 5 percent of their total incomes.

In Newfoundland, where more than 90 percent of the sealers live, sealing income accounts for less than 1 percent of that province's gross domestic product and only 2 percent of the landed value of Newfoundland's fishery.

Last year with the low pelt prices and high cost of gas, sealers were probably lucky to break even.

The seal fur market is evaporating. Canadian officials would be wise to start planning alternate sustainable employment opportunities for affected East Coasters.

Posted by: Mike Quinoa | March 18, 2009 01:13 PM

Meg -- I would rather be poor and give up my "privileges" of education and snack food and live a virtuous life than make "good money" and have blood on my hands. (Oh by the way, education IS a right here in the good ole USA... it is mandatory up into high school). Remember -- the majority of serial killers had first killed animals before they moved on to people. We should not be encouraging psychotic behavior against animals. Would it be okay to be a hitman then because it pays well?

Posted by: Katie | March 18, 2009 07:44 PM

Oh and by the way Meg -- don't make assumptions about me when you don't even know who I am! I know that I am fortunate and I thank God for my blessings every day, so please don't write that I take these things for "granted." Thank you.

Posted by: Katie | March 18, 2009 07:47 PM

Rev.Meg
Newfoundlanders were offered alternate jobs as well as a substantial gift donation from an anonymous donor if they would stop sealing. They refused, saying it was their cultural tradition.
And please stop passing judgment on animal advocates. I've always lived frugally and don't take what I have for granted.
Most importantly, I find your defense of this horrific torture of seals for any reason to be extremely callous. Chilling, in fact.

Posted by: lynda downie | March 18, 2009 11:48 PM

Meg, shame on you, you cave woman. You are the reason that evil exists. In your mind, anything is justifiable as long as its for money. Well here's some news for you, money does not make the world go 'round. Maybe it will for some family of rich baby seal smashing slobs for not even a fraction of time that this world has existed. But if we keep killing off nature and effing up every ecosystem that has brought us into existence, how long do you think this world will last? Better question yet, rev, do you really think we are doing God proud by doing this, as if he threw animals down for us so we can play whack-a-mole?

Posted by: ashleigh | March 19, 2009 12:42 AM

And also Meg, if there is a God up there, I'd rather him see me as an illiterate, naked, emaciated hobo with a respect for his creation - rather than a baby skull smashing aristocrat.

Posted by: ashleigh | March 19, 2009 01:04 AM

Carla, do you own any diamonds? Even a small one? If you do, you are helping to finance the many civil wars in Africa, where thousands of people, including children, are dying every hour of every day. Neither animals nor people fare well in war zones. If humans are not doing well, then animals are not doing well either. I fignt for both human and animal rights, Carla, and the humans come first; we need to learn compassion and understanding for ourselves first, then hopefully it will extend to other beings. And Mike, I have been saying this over and over again: we need to provide alternative employment for those currently make a living harming or killing animals. Again to Carla: I am going to pray for you. You show no compassion in your blogs, which to me shows that you have no compassion for your fellow humans, which shows me your compassion for anyone or anything is limited to those who share your views.

Posted by: REv. Meg Schramm | March 19, 2009 08:29 AM

This is absolutely horrible. This is so sad, it has to be stopped, these are cowards that can do this to animals.

Posted by: Dorothy | March 19, 2009 12:09 PM

omg, this is sick. those bastards should be skinned alive too!

Posted by: Kayla | March 19, 2009 12:18 PM

I am Canadian who is completely sickened by the seal hunt (along with millions of others). The sealing industry is subsidized with MY tax dollars, which makes it even worse.

For those of you who have sympathy for the seal hunters - DON'T. They have been presented with a number of other options to earn money (such as eco-tourism) and they refuse to listen to any alternative. They also blatantly refuse to do anything to at least make this hunt more humane. Random post-mortem studies have shown that over 40% of these baby seals have been SKINNED ALIVE. Seal hunters have been repeatedly filmed torturing these creatures and laughing about it.

Carla's assesment of the financial gain is correct. The average seal hunter only makes $1000 - $3000 from the seal hunt. It is the seal processing facilities who make the profit - not the seal "hunters" (I use this term loosely as no hunting is required to bludgeon a defenceless baby).

It is now a federal crime in Canada to witness, film or photograph the seal hunt without a permit. It is also illegal to come within 10m of a seal (unless you're a seal hunter). Our country is doing everything in it's power to sweep this dirty little secret under the rug.

Posted by: Kim | March 19, 2009 02:12 PM

Kim, you are amazing! Thank you for showing us the truth from someone who would know it from their own backyard. It makes me sick to my stomach to think of ANYONE actually finding humor and enjoyment in harming a defenseless creature. What a bunch of cowards.

Posted by: Katie | March 19, 2009 03:54 PM

Today in the newspaper on the text page, a texter referred to someone as a t... for opposing the seal hunt, as on this message board he or she refers to wars and starving people dying, as if this somehow justifies cruelty to animals, enmasse slaughter for vanity-commercial gain.
The seals are not responsible for wars starvation disease violence leading to humans dying, we are, people-society.
The canadians, newfoundlanders
japanese, china, will become 3rd world countries because they give up slaughtering animals for commerce.
Its cruel, barbaric, totally unnecessary, people who are prepared to gain from it, and those who support them, are of a moronic character, be they have titles, respectable,
literally blood money.
l might add that the people who oppose it and care about the suffering, are more likely to care about people suffering also.

Posted by: lynne | March 19, 2009 05:47 PM

Beth - I don't see how its fair that you blame this on God. He has given every human a thing called 'free will' and that is why some of us choose not to eat and abuse animals, and that is also why others choose to take part in such things as Seal clubbing.

Don't get me wrong, I am totally outraged and angry about what is happening to these animals. But all I ask is that you have a little respect and don't diss God because he's obviously not the one doing this.

Posted by: Ally | March 20, 2009 02:32 AM

I saw that and I cried!!
Thats horrible!!!
What kind of monster would do that to an inoscent animal!!!

Posted by: Michael-Ann | March 20, 2009 06:55 PM

All I can say is wow. You need to put this image on a poster, saying something to the effect of "Is it any surprise that people who abuse animals, are more likely to abuse humans?"

Anyone who could do that to any creature, and not want to puke rivers, is just as sick as any serial killer you can think of. Only when they eventually will kill people, that's when they'll be imprisoned.

Past behavior is a clear predictor of future behavior. Oh, better, put that on a poster and say, "So this picture would illustrate, the person who did this, might come to your house next and do this to your child". Okay that might be far too disturbing, but I don't know is it?

I've seen a lot of horror films, and that seal does look similar to if someone used horror film effects to show a child with their skull crushed in all bloody. Not that they would do that in horror films mind you, too busy showing images of animals innocent as babies being harmed for that.

BTW, I try my best to avoid horror films without animal harm. I know that Rob Zombie's remake of Holloween alluded to animal abuse, but I think he's with PETA and did a great job of showing the clear association, between Michael abusing animals and then murdering people.

Posted by: Jackie | March 21, 2009 10:54 AM

This picture overwelmed me so much I counldn't stop crying. Why and how can this continue? I will be a PETA member until the day I die and urge anyone who sees this to also help support PETA so this will STOP!

Posted by: Karen | March 21, 2009 03:15 PM

this kind of thing is wrong, who would be able to do anything like this to a helpless seal, are they deaf? could they not hear it cry out in pain when they hit it? heartless, just heartless.

Posted by: natasha | March 21, 2009 09:22 PM

Canadian people, please do something to STOP SEAL SLAUGHTER! What a modern, developed and democratic country. Shame on you Canada!

Posted by: Jaajay | March 23, 2009 09:37 AM

The comment by Maureen written below is quite disturbing. What makes humans the ones to decide how animals live or die. I don't think you can compare an animal getting skinned alive to someone in africa looking "all messed up" because of lack of food. I have to wonder what the heck people are thinking sometimes.
