Take That, Georgia Department of Agriculture

Yesterday, attorneys working on behalf of PETA and two plaintiffs won a lawsuit to stop the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) from granting licenses to animal shelters that use cruel gas chambers to kill cats and dogs.
Is that a victory cheer I hear?
You might remember our post a couple of years ago about the GDA's refusal to uphold Georgia's 1990 Humane Euthanasia Act, which banned the use of gas chambers by most animal shelters. Well, thanks to the hard work of attorneys with the law firm Schiff Hardin LLP, a permanent injunction was entered against the GDA's practice of approving and encouraging the illegal use of gas chambers. That's right—the very institution that was supposed to be upholding the law was breaking it. And it's been busted. Now, counties in Georgia with a population of 25,000 or more must provide animals with the best form of euthanasia available: intravenous injections of sodium pentobarbital.
We are still waiting with fingers crossed to see if Georgia's bill to ban all gas chambers permanently has made its way to the Senate. But for now, we are throwing a little victory celebration for all the shelter animals who will be spared a cruel death thanks to this courtroom victory.

AWESOME!!! Way to go Schiff Hardin and Peta!! Gas chambers should have never been implemented in the first place, this is FAN-tastic news!! Though the down side to this is why couldn't they go a step further and ban them ALL??

This is GREAT news!!!
I remember that one blog where yall were showing the gas chambers and one them, the front door was all glass ... and I could just picture some sicko sitting there watching as the animal died....

It's my understanding that the Georgia House of Rednecks will not allow the bill out of committee, and it is dead. Local activists have been asked by certain "humane" groups NOT to complain because the bill was "badly written". The Commissioner of Agriculture, Tommy Irvin, and a spokes"woman" for Georgia "Humane" Association, Carolyn Danese, have been actively lobbying FOR gas chambers to be made legal throughout Georgia for years. Unfortunately they are able to bring in animal control officers who swear that they couldn't do their jobs humanely without gas chambers. These people find a rapt audience in our House of Rednecks and the animals always lose. Nothing to be proud of in Georgia - but lots of work to do, including correcting the work of misguided "humane" associations.

I have a friend who lives in GA and he's been lobbying to get the gas chamber billed passed and he's written me that it's discouraging because the legislators just don't seem to care. Despite the fact that it's inhumane, more expensive, and more dangerous to humans, they seem to be rebelling just for the sake of rebelling. It's ridiculous. So I'm really glad to see you guys are stickin' it to 'em now!! And thanks to that court/judge for their support!
