Monkey with coconut
No, you're not experiencing déjà vu. This is the second blog in two days in which we've reported that primates have taken aim at humans—literally. In the latest instance, a monkey in Thailand—fed up with performing the thankless task of climbing coconut trees to retrieve fruit for his owner to sell—apparently launched a coconut at the man's head, killing him instantly. Did we mention that payback is hell?

Like so many animals who are exploited for profit, the monkey, whose name is Brother Kwan, was frequently denied rest and beaten if he refused to climb.

This story comes on the heels of a report last week about a chimpanzee in a Swedish Zoo who collects stockpiles of rocks and then chucks them at zoo visitors.

How much more proof do we need that primates are intelligent animals with the ability to reason, get mad, and fight back? Better watch your back, Castrol.

Oh my. That's too bad that the man was killed, what is going to happen to this monkey? I hope he won't be euthanized, like so many other animals who are "dangerous to the public and blah blah blah".

Posted by: Aneliese | March 11, 2009 02:32 PM

What a sad story. Honestly, I am sorry for the man and as equally the poor monkey who has suffered beatings and poor treatment for someone's monetary gain. How courageous these animals in an "when animals attack" type sense when they realize they are stronger than the hands that beat them. And even more tragic, most animals in these cases are punished even more for simply being a victim. No one won in this story, but I do hope that it carries an enormous message of the animals we share this world with and the importance of our humane, loving treatment towards them. I hope the monkey is better off now. Live on Brother Kwan!

Posted by: Chelsea Patterson | March 11, 2009 03:15 PM

I'm sure the monkey will be killed. At least there is one less man that owns monkeys for this purpose and his death will save quite a few that he would have owned if he had not died.

Posted by: Kristin | March 11, 2009 03:20 PM

Good one less Animal abuser.

Posted by: Dani | March 11, 2009 03:40 PM

This poor man! He has feelings too! Doesn't the monkey feel for all animals?

Posted by: TC Good | March 11, 2009 09:22 PM

I am sure the monkey will be punished for... being a monkey!

Posted by: NT | March 11, 2009 09:41 PM

The monkey shoulden't be killed. Big deal, he killed someone. The one he killed was clearly abusing the monkey....

Posted by: Emmie | March 11, 2009 10:39 PM

Go monkeys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Posted by: Jessica Graystone | March 11, 2009 11:38 PM

Yes, I am sure they will kill the monkey when he was only defending himself. self defense is a right.

Posted by: roxanne` | March 12, 2009 01:37 AM

I know quite a few people I wouldn't mind killing with a coconut...

I hope that if they do decide to kill Brother Kwan, they at least do it without torturing or beating him to death.

Posted by: Lisa | March 12, 2009 05:52 AM

I feel bad for both the monkey and the owner but the owner shouldn't of beaten the monkey.

Posted by: Pepsi One is Fun | March 12, 2009 06:43 AM

Go monkey!

Posted by: Tessa | March 12, 2009 07:31 AM

Monkey see, Monkey do, Monkey hurl the coconut at you.

Posted by: Saucy | March 12, 2009 07:42 AM

hell yea! go monkey! i love monkey.
my grandma had a monkey for a pet in Nigeria when she was a little girl. Her parents went there as missionaries, and they had my grandma and her brother there. His name was Biri, the monkey I mean.

Posted by: Amber Falobas | March 12, 2009 09:56 AM

I don't get it. Where are all of you seeing that the man beat the monkey? And how do we know the monkey didn't simply drop the coconut at the wrong time when the man wasn't looking and accidentally kill him?
Regardless, none of you know the facts about the case and yet some on here find it aceptable to aplaud this mans death. For all you know, the man may have treated this monkey really well.
You people are compasionate indeed.

Posted by: Kurt K | March 12, 2009 10:19 AM

Read the article, Kurt, It clearly states the monkey was beaten if he didn't climb trees and pick coconuts for his owner. And no, animal rights advocates generally do not have much sympathy or compassion for people who treat animals badly.
You are very tiresome, Kurt, and despite your previous comments that you are here for discussion it is clear you only wish to pick fights and argue without contributing anything worth talking about. I wish you would go away, but if you won't I will take my own advice and ignore you.

Posted by: Elphaba | March 12, 2009 10:38 AM

It's about time.

Posted by: Carole Perez | March 12, 2009 10:58 AM

are you really that naive to think that monkeys will just continuously retrieve coconuts from trees for humans? over and over again just for the sheer pleasure of making humans happy?! i'm sure the monkey has better things he would rather be doing.......

wild animals are forced to perform tricks, acts, work, etc (getting coconuts) at the hands of humans all the time. yes, you are right, maybe it was a accident. and if it was, i call it karma.

don't you get it? the man shouldn't be treating the animal well, poorly, or otherwise. wild animals should be just that, IN THE WILD, not getting coconuts for humans.

Posted by: tamra | March 12, 2009 11:50 AM

Kurt, do you really think anyone who's using an animal as a slave is treating it well? Not even human slaves were treated well. Why are you on this site in the first place if you disagree with everything we stand for? We're not applauding the death of that man, (I myself jokingly said there are some I'd like to kill with a coconut, but it's an exaggeration- they annoy me endlessly, but I don't really want them dead!) we're applauding the fact that it's finally coming to light that these 'animals' are intelligent and sensitive enough to finally get fed up enough to fight back. Those of us that spend our time using our voices for these creatures that don't have them and stand up and fight for them can only but be proud when they get up and prove to people like that man (and I'm guessing you) that they also have feelings. It's awful that he died, but how many animals die every day without anyone saying anything about it? I agree with Elphaba. You're here to pick fights, and it'd be better if you weren't here. Brother Kwan had as many rights as his 'owner' did.

Posted by: Lisa | March 12, 2009 12:44 PM

Elphaba,
I will only pick fights when I think they need to picked. In this case when people are celebrating the death of an innocent man, I take offense to that.
I really don't know how my comments could construed as 'fighting words'. I was asking questions to which you answered none.
I do appologize, I didn't click on the link and read the article. I was going off the what was posted on this site. Regardless of what to the man alegedly did the monkey, he surely didn't deserve to die.

Posted by: Kurt K | March 12, 2009 12:56 PM

It's a sad story all around but there's something in me that make me think what goes around comes around and it did. I hope they don't do a thing to this monkey.

Posted by: Wendy | March 12, 2009 01:30 PM

Personally, I'm glad that the monkey fought back. Now it will not be tortured anymore by it's cruel owner. Thank God!

Posted by: Sarah | March 12, 2009 03:18 PM

Good. Serves him right. Yes, monkeys have feelings and are intelligent. Abuse is abuse is abuse.

Posted by: Karen | March 12, 2009 07:17 PM

It's terrible that the man died and can never make up for his mistakes. That was one "lucky" shot... for the monkey anyway.

I think everyone is welcome here at this blog, especially those who see things differently. It may be worth your time to at least try to see things from opposite, sometimes extreme, perspectives, even if our gut reaction is to argue for what you already feel naturally.

If you don't agree with someone, try to learn.. share... explain... and move on. Sometimes the most difficult part of being respectful is dealing with the emotional reactions of others, like when some people say "I hope that terrible abuser DIES HORRIBLY for what he's doing!!" Usually people don't really mean it, but just want to see some justice for a tormented animal (or person) and lose their tempers. I know I have lost my cool in the past and I likely will again and again. I can't promise I am speaking for everyone of course.

Sorry, I sound like a hippie. I just want people to stop hurting each other and animals, because WE KNOW BETTER! :D

Posted by: Meech! | March 12, 2009 07:28 PM

Man trains monkey, abuses monkey. business as usual. monkey climbs tree. monkey fetches coconut. monkey hurls coconut at man, killing him. It's just part of a process. i guess you just have to spoonfeed it to some of the unenlightened here.

Posted by: vegancoin | March 12, 2009 07:36 PM

Meech you sound like a wet blanket. RESPECT??? For who? For a man who has no respect for animals, nature, life, God.
There is no excuse for animal abuse. No excuse, and the man got what was coming to him.

Mankind has a very exagerated opinion of themselves and their place in the Universe. We go around imposing our will on the planet, it's inhabitants, each other, because one is stronger, one is smarter, one has more wealth. Then SUPRISE! Just when you least expect Mother nature fights back. The whale sinks the ship, the ice breaks and swallows the butchers, the dog scratches the eyeballs out of it's killer, the pigs poison the population. Get ready folks for a come uppence. Get ready for a recompence. Get ready for a Karmic Reaction. Get ready for some Answered Prayers.

If you want respect you got to give it. There is nothing to learn from animal abusers, only a place to teach, to preach, to advise, to council, to admonish, to correct.

The line is drawn in the sand. If you cross it be prepared to reap the WRATH OF CONG, I mean GOD!

Thank you Lord for this Lesson.

Thank you Brother Kwan for the LAUGHS heeheeheehahahahah.

LOL

The Bible says "God sits in the Heavens and laughs at the foolish and the wicked".
Also the "Righteous will Rejoice at the Harvest of the Wicked".

So Kirt K., why don't you go back to Bible School and stop coming on these pages and "judging" people for their honest remarks. And stop trying to beat people up with guilt and condemnation. Another favored trick of the religiously confused.

Posted by: Saucy | March 13, 2009 11:41 AM

That poor monkey! It should go to a monkey shelter.

Posted by: ashlyn | March 13, 2009 12:46 PM

Religiously confused? What they hell do you mean by that. You are the one who quotes the Bible and then turns around and says other passages are wrong and were written by ignorant people. You speak as if you figured out the meaning of life and you are all knowing. Have some humility. You have no clue what God wants for all of us. You spew hate towards anybody if they don't agree with you. You choose passages from the Bible that meet your needs while you condemn other passages that you disagree with. You either follow the whole Bible or none of it.
If you think God cares for animals as much as he cares for humans, his true children, then that is your belief. I won't say anything bad about that.
But don't sit there and call into question my beliefs because I find it sad a man died. Should he have been punished, yes. Should he have died, no.
And remember:
"He who hath not sinned may cast the first stone." Or is this one you don't agree with as well?

Posted by: Kurt K | March 13, 2009 12:59 PM

Kurt, you threw a stone. Unfortunately, unlike a certain coconut which was thrown, it didn't kill any of us.

Posted by: Lisa | March 14, 2009 04:11 AM

Unfortunately for you, that is...

Posted by: Lisa | March 14, 2009 04:16 AM

Kurt K. you are a very foolish man, on a fools errand here.

I'd like to book you on a trip to the chimp expo at the Furuvik Zoo in Stockholm.

Posted by: Saucy | March 14, 2009 06:51 PM

Look, I believe in the creator and all but.....

Kurt is right. you either believe the Bible or you don't. Why don't you actually DISPROVE what Kurt said? It would certainly help us disabled fools understand how Kurt was wrong instead of calling people fools, huh? Instead of your childish insults, how about actually proving him wrong?

And only a third of the world is Christian. The Bible, a religous text, is NOT a valid argument.

And nature does NOT fight back. Nature simply is.

Posted by: Saucy, are you THAT ignorant? | March 16, 2009 09:49 PM

Leave animals alone....
no chains, how about freedom...

Posted by: Sandra Deneault | March 18, 2009 01:34 PM

I hope the monkey isn't killed in retaliation. I feel sorry for the man's family, but the monkey should never have been used in that manner. Poor baby.

Posted by: Jen Choate | March 19, 2009 10:48 AM

I beleive that trainer got what he deserved more people should RESPECT LOVE & CARE FOR ANIMALS AS WELL AS PEOPLE !!! That man beat that animal & treated the monkey poorly that animal is the victum not the man what happened to him is sad but lets face it he had it coming. Have a great day all !!

Posted by: Joann | March 19, 2009 11:45 AM

Monkeys and other animals feel the same sort of emotions as humans. They simply communicate differently. When I was a child my father owned a squirrel monkey. The monkey was VERY attached to my father and when my father was in the hospital, the monkey refused to eat and died before my father could come home. People need to learn this and many never will.

Posted by: GLS | March 19, 2009 12:19 PM

Well, if people would stop being abusive and cruel to animals and treat them with love and respect, the animals would not become agressive.. All I can say is, sad for his loved ones that he was killed but he did it to himself.. The animal is NOT!!! to blame. Hopefully people will wake up and realize, that they have no right to treat animals like their lives ment nothing... If not we will see a lot more of this. Animals get fed up too.. "What goes around comes around", isn't that the way it goes..?

Posted by: Sonja | March 19, 2009 12:27 PM

In all honesty I do not feel sorry for this man one bit. This monkey was clearly pushed to its breaking point. None of you can tell me that if you were a prisoner for your whole life, constantly abused and used for slave labour that you would not do anything in your power to escape. Unfortunatly in this case the only means of escape was to kill the owner, if the monkey's actions were infact intentional. Situations like this shouldn't even have to happen, I say that no animals should be used for labour of any sort. Also, bible quotes should not be used for a form of agrument because for people that do not follow the same religion as you, or do not even have one at all (like myself) it really has no impact. It is possible to love animals through your own free will and not because god says so.

I am surprised at all the comments feeling sorrv for the abuser/user human. It's the monkev who deserves the pitv, screw the mean man.Liberate the primates world wide!!!

BIG DEAL THE ABUSER DIED, GOOD FOR HIM..THAT MONKEY STOOD UP FOR HIMSELF ..NO MORE ABUSE FOR HIM. HE DESERVES A LIFE OF PEACE NOW...

Posted by: marie | March 22, 2009 10:06 PM

The death may have been an accident, who really knows. But the truth is: there are fundamental laws at work in this world that control all deeds that are evil in nature. Abusing, torturing, murdering are all acts that have consequences. The monkey was obviously a victim of exploitation and the man who died was the exploiter. The rest is up to an even-ing out called Karma. Pretty simple description, very serious conclusion.

I had a dog Lizzy when i was a kid.She was like a second mother to me.When she had to be put down becouse of six tumors in her stomach it killed me inside. It took me ten years to get over it.Finally I have a very happy pit bull terrior who sleeps in the bed with me and kicks daddy out every night.Hes so good with three stepdaughters and really protective of everybody. He walks me out to my truck when I go to work everyday. He was a throw away that nobody wanted and now he is happy, healthy and spoiled rottten.More people should do research and adopt his breed. He makes coming home a thrill in life. If anybody ever hurt him on purpose i would be very upset and cry for weeks like after i lost my sweet dalmation who was everything to a young scared little girl.We must protect our family members even ones with four legs and a tail.

All I have to say to that is BRAVO Brother Kwan. Long live the primate.

It's cool that the monkey killed that guy that was probably teasing him.

The thing that's not cool is what will happen to that poor little thing...

I hope nothing though...

It's so great there are a lot of concerned posts about the monkey. Our Recovery Act is well in motion, regardless of the monkey's fate we all have must meet some day.

I dont care what anyone eles says on here... I am GLAD the man is dead and i am glad it was the very animal he abused that did it, im vey strong on my feelings about primates and anyone who harms a single hair on their heads deserves to die, i would choose a primate over a human that abuses them anyday, to brother kwan if your now dead..r.i.p sweetie, to the man... ha ha. and for those who want to tell me how uncaring and harsh i am.... i dont give a toss.

Posted by: emma | October 13, 2009 06:13 PM

you know that the monkey is going to be killed or is already dead also good for the man he desvered it one of this days animals are going to kill all animal abusers and befriend us all peta members and all other animal rights groups! Go peta!:)

I'm sure everyone is aware of people who have been beaten, killed, raped, dehumanized, and forced into slave labor for their entire lives, including many in my own family. It wasn't legally or socially acceptable for any of these millions of people to kill their abusers in retaliation, but it's fine for animals I guess. I wonder if the same people who are so adamant about the animal's right of homicidal retaliation would be vocal about it if the victim of abuse was a human being - of course not. Human beings abuse other human beings every day, for profit, for fun, just because...it's a normal part of human life. It's only an issue when it happens to animals. Thanks for helping me understand everyone!
