It should be no surprise to regular readers of this blog that we keep an eye on happenings at KFC, so this caught our eye: According to news reports, the manager of a KFC in Manchester, New Hampshire, received a hoax phone call from someone who claimed to be from KFC's corporate offices and told her to test the fire-suppression system. When she did so, she and two staffers preparing sandwiches were coated with a chemical powder that is a respiratory irritant. Authorities were summoned, who took the unfortunate trio to the hospital for decontamination.

Just a couple of observations:

  1. Even without being doused with firefighting chemicals, KFC's chicken sandwiches are already contaminated.

  2. Pulling a dangerous hoax on unsuspecting people is cruel, but it's much less cruel than what KFC does to chickens.

There is ample criteria to close down all Kentuckey Fried Chicken outlets. They are allied with factory farms and slaughterhouses that perpetrate egregious cruelty to animals.

Apparently this poor lady did not know that the only people who should be testing the fire supression system is the local fire department.

If the employees in that KFC are anything like the employees in the KFC where I live, it is no surprise to me that she would not know that.

To those saying that this is a good reason to shut down KFC: You do realize that the hoax was perpetrated by someone who called KFC, right? This was something done to KFC not something done by KFC. While you can say that it doesn't speak highly of the training of the manager, it is not a reason to shut KFC down. Making that argument just distracts from real arguments and links the two (specious arguments and real arguments) in a way that hurts the real one.
