Yesterday, PETA held a press conference in Vancouver to announce our ramped-up campaign against the Canadian seal slaughter. We'll be running the campaign up to and through the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, which will be held in the city. Our goal is to switch some of the focus from Canada's Games to Canada's shame—the annual massacre of hundreds of thousands of baby seals. To illustrate the worldwide outrage over Canada's despicable seal slaughter, our international affiliates also held protests in Australia and France yesterday.

Just seen on news where dolphins are trapped by ice in newfounland. This is sooo sad dolphins have been known to save people from shark attacks. I hope someone goes and helps rescue these beautiful dolphins so they are not left to die.

Talk about heart breaking... I saw that video listed, well what I could stand to watch. They do need to put an end to the killing of those poor seals. To those that do it and support it, shame on everyone of you, how do you sleep at night?

Please be aware: 99.9% of Canadians are against seal hunts. It takes place on Canadian soil but that doesn't mean we all condone or support it. We hate it. Check out Bear Hunter magazine and see how many Americans come to Canada to kill our bears.

Rod, if so many Canadians are against the seal massacre then why don't they stop the gov't please? Also, there is cruelty in America which we fight against.

If 99.9% of the population is against it, then maybe you guys could work to stop it? American hunters are awful mean people too!

Canadian animal loving rock stars like Bryan Adams, K.D. Lang and Mae Moore should hold an annual anti- Seal Hunt concert until this monstrosity is finally halted.

While if asked most Canadians are against the seal hunt (I wouldn't say 99.9%, but at least more than half) MOST Canadians are not affected in any way by the seal hunt, only those in the Maritimes are. So while most Canadians may be against it in principle they don't see it as an important issue.

Newfoundland has the highest unemployment rate in Canada and instead of solving the problem by creating new jobs and new possibilities for Newfoundlanders, the Canadian government knows it is much easier to just support fishing and hunting practices.

And the worse thing is that the Newfoundlanders are the biggest defenders of this plan. BUT THEY ARE VICTIMS OF IT!

Newfoundlanders who are being shafted by this, have been brainwashed into believing that the seal hunt, and fishing industry is something for them to be proud of.

But the seal hunt is just PROOF that the Canadian government doesn't care about them.

New-Brunswick is a great example of this: The government decided to invest in a top of the line telecommunication infrastructure, and now the province has lots of nice well-paying jobs for its workers, and a striving economy.

Canadians who are not affected by the seal hunt directly need to realize that this affects the reputation of Canada in the world, and that for the survival of our economy and international standing we must put an end to the seal hunt.

Canadians who are participating and supporting the seal hunt need to be shown how they are being LIED to by the government. How the seal hunt and fishing industries are actually not good for them and their children. That if the government really cared about them, it would invest in jobs and economic development in Newfoundland.

And that for those reasons alone they need to be against the seal hunt and refuse to work it and instead demand TRAINING and economic development from the Canadian and Newfoundland governments.

And all Canadians no matter where they live need to be educated about compassion and kindness, and the link between a compassionate vegan lifestyle and peace on earth.

I didn't hear a thing about this on the news or anywhere; Canada must be trying hard to hush this all up.

Excellent comments, Antoine. Hopefully the EU is going to ban seal fur outright, and shut down this vile industry for good. The Canadian government should be developing meaningful employment initiatives for affected East Coasters right now (if, as you pointed out, they really give a damn).

I am Canadian. Did I say proud? Not at this moment. It is terrible we declare ourselves as a peaceful country yet look at the atrocities Canadians are doing!! It's an embarassment. I have written to my local MPP who is also the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services. He is trying to pass bills in our province to bring animal cruelty laws up to date. I have urged him not to forget about the seals. There is no difference between bludgeoning a seal or a dog to death. No difference whatsoever!! And my question is, who are these people that would do this?? Are they so desperate for a buck that they are willing to lose all concern for life and its value?? They should all be ashamed of themselves!! Because we all know, all other Canadians are ashamed of them.

After reading this I have to admit that I am ashamed to be a Canadian.

I had no idea that the seal hunt was being done here. I always thought that it was a different country, that Canada was working to stop other countries from hunting seals. Imagine my horror after reading that MY COUNTRY IS CONDONING THIS BARBARIC MASSACRE!!!!!

To everyone that has read this I offer my most heart felt appologies. I know it's not up to me to appologise but due to this monstrous deed by Canada SOME ONE HAS TO.

wiat i have seen the videos and some are 30 years old because it shows white coats getting killed

Posted by: john | February 20, 2009 09:35 PM

Rod I should point out here, that as the citizens of a democracy Canadians have the responsibility to speak up, to protest, to the government when it is allowing something so heinous. It is time to end this disgraceful misrepresentation of 85% of Canada's population and find something practical to do.

Well said Antoine, well said.

Americans, too, need to stop killing animals, such as cows, hogs, & chicken, to produce food.

Posted by: tonneezz | February 21, 2009 12:33 PM

Dear Antoine i have a question for you what would you call an inportant issue? what could be more inportant than thousands of innocent animals killed for there fur every year? i dont live in China or France but i hate the fur farms with every fiber of my being i wont rest untill they are stopped for good Barbara Peta Member

Please stop this slaughter and bring humanity into the 21st century at a time when looking after each other and the planet is the only way we'll get through. Alex from New Zealand.

The aforementioned dolphins trapped by ice in newfoundland have been rescued by a group of locals in a fishing boat. Three were accounted for while a fourth went missing. In addition, I'm a maritimer, I wouldn't call New Brunswicks economy thriving by any means though...

Posted by: Travis | February 22, 2009 01:41 PM

It's gotta go, no doubt about it. As Antoine pointed out it is an economic dead end and the hunters could easily find real jobs elsewhere in the country with six figure salaries, and this is despite the current economic situation.
