It's On, Canada

PETA's_Olympic_Spoof_Logo
Another year has come and gone, and still our snow-covered neighbor to the north continues to back the annual massacre of baby seals—the largest and bloodiest marine-mammal hunt on Earth. With the start of Canada's seal slaughter only weeks away, we held a press conference in front of Vancouver City Hall to kick off our campaign to stop sealers from bashing the heads of hundreds of thousands of baby seals.

Vancouver will be home to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, which will put Canada on center stage for much of the coming year, and we plan to put its shameful hunt there, too, for all the world to scrutinize. We have written to the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee asking for their help with persuading government officials to outlaw the hunt.

There's no word yet on Prime Minister Stephen Harper's reaction to our press conference, but he can be sure that we will continue to be a thorn in his side until he puts an end to the bloody seal slaughter once and for all.

Peta should make "Boycott Vancouver 2010" bumpers stickers & shirts!!!

Posted by: Janet Fitzgerald | February 18, 2009 05:12 PM

You bet it's on.
I'm Canadian, and I'm telling everyone I know about the seal hunt and what they can do to help stop it. Go PETA!

Posted by: Aneliese | February 18, 2009 06:34 PM

Barbaric. Shameful. Unfathomable cruelty.

Posted by: Meech! | February 18, 2009 06:35 PM

I really wanted to visit Vancouver for the 2010 winter Olympics but I will not support anything Canadian until they stop this horrendous ritual. Why on earth was Stephen Harper re-elected anyways???

Posted by: michelle | February 18, 2009 06:37 PM

lmao
IT IS SO ON CANADA!

Posted by: Alyssa | February 18, 2009 07:46 PM

Let's kick those seal killer's sorry little butts and save the seals! Wooo!

Posted by: Gina | February 18, 2009 08:12 PM

I love Canada and all but if they are doing something like this that's inhumane, then yes I agree that they should put an end to it.

Posted by: Tabitha | February 18, 2009 08:47 PM

PETA should make it clear to potential Olympic sponsors that boycotts will result if the seal massacre isn't banned.

I am committed to boycotting the companies of every commercial aired during the Olympics if the madness hasn't stopped.

Posted by: Brad | February 18, 2009 09:32 PM

people who kill seals for the purpose of sport are screwed in the head. Do you not realize that seals have feelings too. How would you like it if someone one was out to kill you for sport.Animals have a heart just like humans. you guys are all screwed in the head.........

Posted by: darlene hermary | February 18, 2009 10:47 PM

Every Canadian i know is against this murder, but the government does it anyway. It is time for Canadians to step up and demand that their politicians obey their demands and end this evil, until then i will be boycotting the winter olympics and i i suggest you all do the same.

Posted by: CHRIS | February 18, 2009 10:54 PM

Canada sucks. I know why everyone here says they hate Canadians. They are cold hearted people. Its a shame

Posted by: angela | February 18, 2009 11:07 PM

I really, really never thought I would ever say this...but; right now, I'm ashamed to be Canadian. I am so infuriated, I just can't take it. Like you just DON'T bash a baby seal on the head for your personal enjoyment.

Posted by: Cleaa | February 18, 2009 11:20 PM

Love it. It's on! I'm up for this! (:
Those poor things. ):

Posted by: Bry | February 19, 2009 12:27 AM

It's on!!Everyone needs to boycott Canada and all Canadian products and PETA, we are counting on you to make this Boycott of Canada know to the world that we will not put up with this holocaust anymore. This is the most brutal, sick, slaughter of innocence and a stain on Canada. The fire needs to be turned up to the highest it can go this year...EU is faltering on ban, but other members of the EU went forward without them to issue their own bans on seal products. We cannot let this happen one more year. There are only a handful of sealers and millions of us!

Posted by: Connee | February 19, 2009 06:11 AM

i totally agree with Tabitha
i love Canada and the winter olympics but they have to stop killing poor little animals ;(

Posted by: Sara | February 19, 2009 06:19 AM

This is so barbaric - I'm boycotting anything to do with the Vancouver Olympics and am never going to Canada until it stops this bloody slaughter.

Posted by: Anna | February 19, 2009 06:58 AM

I am a Canadian and want the seal hunt stopped now. The government will never stop it unless boycotts start affecting the bottom line. Thank you!

Posted by: NT | February 19, 2009 08:54 AM

Good bring on the boycott. None of us here (in Canada) like it either..its been an ongoing battle and we are confident that one day we'll win the war. Angela please refrain from saying that you hate all Canadians and that we're all cold blooded...you sound narrow minded and childish grouping a WHOLE country out to be bad..trust me, there are only a few twisted bad apples that believe that bashing a baby's head in is somewhat justified.

Posted by: Courtney | February 19, 2009 09:17 AM

Never could understand how anyone could kill any animal. So yes Canada STOP killing the seals!!!

Posted by: John Maynus | February 19, 2009 09:35 AM

Canadians are not cold-hearted people.

Come to Ottawa on March 15th for a very special event to protest the commercial seal hunt. It is the government that continues to support the commercial seal hunt, and NOT the majority of Canadians.

Posted by: Michele | February 19, 2009 10:20 AM

It is one of the most barbaric acts aganist animals on earth and an immense shame on Canada and on mankind. I am glad to see so many Canadians posting here showing they oppose this. It is unbelievable that acts like this are allowed to occur.

Posted by: Lauren | February 19, 2009 10:41 AM

I'd REALLY like to bash these sealers heads is so they can feel the pain these poor innocent seals feel!!! WHY can't we all just go up there and do it?????

Posted by: Missy L | February 19, 2009 02:11 PM

The seal hunt is not as bad as it's made out to be. Many of you have your facts mixed up and don't know he truth.

I'm Canadian and I support the seal hunt and the hunters 100%.

Do a little reading and you'll soon learn it's not that bad.

Posted by: Connor | February 19, 2009 04:41 PM

"Not that bad", Connor? How about if young dogs or cats were being bludgeoned to death and skinned in the streets for no other reason than to sell their fur? Would that be "not that bad"?

Seals are close relatives of the dog. They feel pain, fear and love in much the same way. How can they not deserve the same protection we offer our beloved companions?

I'll admit that I don't support any hunt, but the seal massacre in particular has always struck me as barbaric and pointless.

Posted by: Rachel | February 19, 2009 05:40 PM

As a Canadian I just want to make sure that people understand that many of us have been fighting this pratice for a while now. Canada is also not the only country that has these sort of practices, if you are going to boycott the Olympics in Vancouver, you would have to have boycotted the Olympics in China. Where they eat dogs, cats, really any type of animal and skin them alive for there fur. They also have the worst animal laws almost anywhere. If you boycott the Olympics in Canada also forget watching them if they are in Europe, where they eat horses and have trained bears and other animals. In short, if you boycott these Olympic games then you will have to boycott every Olympic games or and events anywhere in the world. We can find animal abuse, neglect and killing for nothing really anywhere. We are all witnesses of this and the best way to do this is to combat in our own towns, countries, etc. We must not fight each other, but we must stick together and fight as one if we want to change laws and people's ways of thinking.

Posted by: Sarah | February 19, 2009 06:24 PM

Hey Connor,

How would you feel if someone crushed your baby's head with a club?

Whether you want to accept it or not, seals feel pain and have emotions. They know when they are getting bludgeoned and they know when their babies are getting bludgeoned.

Posted by: Brad | February 19, 2009 07:12 PM

I truely hope people will learn from the olympics in China. Poeple did not boycott china enough and the oymplics were a great success. Poeple have to stand up for animals, unfortunately too many people dont care about compassion towards animals if means sacrifacing for them. I am boycoting EVERY THING that comes from Canada.

Posted by: JulieAnn Zserdin | February 19, 2009 10:24 PM

i'm not vegetarian, i admit that, but i think the seal slaughter in canada is horrible! if they have a problem with seal population there, then why dont thy just ship them someplace else! take them to north pole or something! im sure there are other altenatives. FOR MONeY? sure killing these helpless creatures can make loads of money. meat, fur coats and all, but its not worth it. they can make money FOR NOW, but once the population of these creatures starts to crumble they will realize how horrible theyve been. they can never bring back the lives theyve ruin.

Posted by: casan | February 20, 2009 12:40 AM

I thought Canadians were civilized and humane. I am so disappointed.

Posted by: C J MILLS | February 20, 2009 01:54 AM

The seal hunt is Canada's shame.

Posted by: Curtis | February 20, 2009 08:42 AM

I am from Canada and I am a proud Canadian. I am also a proud vegetarian and a proud animal rights activist. What I find irritating is people like BRAD that say hes boycotting everything Canadian, and Sara, Bry and whoever else says to Boycott Canada....I think you should use your head. Boycott SEAL products. What if we boycotted every Country that had a black strike against it. Im sorry USA, but you guys would be Boycotted a lot. But its not about the country, its about what is wrong (IE: The seal hunt, Burrberry...etc...) You arent going to help the cause by boycotting a country and turning in to haters, unrealistic and selfish people. Its when we should be banning together as neighbours and as a whole...a whole TEAM of people out there to solve a problem. I am not a proud Canadian when speaking about the Seal Hunt but I am a proud Canadian when I can say that our KFC *DID* sign a pledge with PETA. |So grow up, use your heads and realize we are all here for one cause and that's to help the ANIMALS.
So lets get out there and SAVE THESE ANIMALS FROM THESE HORRIBLE PEOPLE THAT COME FROM AROUND THE WORLD !!!

Posted by: Amanda | February 20, 2009 02:45 PM

Although I condemn the seal hunt for its barbarism, I do feel it is slightly irresponsible of PETA to infer that it is a nationally endorsed activity. The truth is, many of the most vehement protestors of this event ARE Canadian. This is the equivalent of boycotting all things American because McDonalds abuses animals.

Posted by: Val | February 20, 2009 03:47 PM

they're pretty bad these Canadians or their government is.. you may be aware of the horrendous China cat and dog fur trade.. well the EU has banned it from start of this year.. as many other countries have due to the harrowing and brutal cruelty suffered by it is estimated up to 2 million of cats and dogs in China each year.. however, as I am aware.. Canada still imports cat and dog fur from China therefore supporting this horrendous and barbaric trade.. and considering how Canadians treat their seals.. it's pretty much revealing of what Canadians are or what their government is when it comes to treatment of animals both at home and abroad.. and evidently they puts their trade and profits above and before anything else... ie. before appalling cruelty and suffering of so many animals..
they or that government are utterly bereft of conscience and are totally heartless..

Posted by: cath89 | February 20, 2009 04:58 PM

I have friends that are Canadian, so I do not say to boycott every Canadian thing you see, but I am also a proud vegan and, I DO NOT support the sealers. I am in middle school, and I understand that the sealing does not make every Canadian thing bad, so you need to find your head and realize this too.

Posted by: CJ | February 20, 2009 11:54 PM

I an Canadian, and I have to wonder...is this really that different than what they do to dogs, cats, anything with fur in China?????

Posted by: Elizabeth | February 21, 2009 01:29 AM

Can Harper hopefully cancel this hunt and then I wouldn't have to worry about people like Angela whose comments really do not help matters. PETA do you think we could stop implying that is a nationally endorsed and condoned activity? That would help a lot.

Posted by: Neil Warne | February 21, 2009 01:55 AM

Listen, I'm Canadian and every Canadian I know is against what is happening to the seals as am I. Not all Canadians are cold hearted, but what is happening is. Please don't judge every single Canadian. I personally think that what is happening is UGLY AND STUPID!

Posted by: Enzo | February 21, 2009 02:00 AM

Pleasant picture. It evokes emotion and makes you think how barbaric it is. Why are they killing the seals?

Posted by: Simran | February 21, 2009 10:00 PM

Out it goes, chop chop Stephen Harper. After all only a minority of Canadians support it's continuation, and in a democracy, what the majority says goes right? So time to move.

Posted by: Patrick Ward | February 21, 2009 11:55 PM

umm... angela, and to all other people against canada? I am a proud canadian and i just want to let u no that it's stupid and really ignorant of you to insult this country. seal hunting is a barbaric thing to do but people like you need to realize that not EVERY Canadian practices it. I am openly against animal cruelty and so are many other CANADIANS. PS HOW DO YOU KNOW AMERICANS AREN'T DOING IT TOO? JUST BECUZ IT HAPPENS IN CANADA, DOESN'T MEAN THAT CANADIANS PRACTICE IT

Posted by: sABBY | February 22, 2009 01:46 AM

I'm Canadian and totally agree with Curtis. Most of the sealers aren't even Canadian, they come from around the world, the seal fur is mainly sold overseas but can be ordered in easily.
Boycott the product; not the country.

The seal hunt is disgusting and our government is selfish - like many.

Posted by: Lor | February 22, 2009 06:04 AM

The seal hunt was stopped. I am sorry I can't remember the years that it was not conducted. However somehow our east coast still survived.
And of course the seal hunt resumed as we are all too aware.
Glass walls in slaughter houses and PETA exposing the seal hunt. Only when enough people are aware and moved to action will enough noise be made to our government to address this barbaric practice.
I will not mention the collective IQ of the men who actually conduct this hunt but understand that we are talking single digits.
An ashamed and heart sick Canadian

Posted by: Nadine Griffith | February 23, 2009 12:35 PM

i am completely against the seal hunt and am proud Canadian but i am slightly upset bye some extremely negative comments against not only the whole country but its citizens most of us also have feelings and all my friends are against the seal hunt and have beliefs on animal rights so i agree the government can screw up awfully like this but please don't make negative comments about all the citizens

Posted by: pepper | February 23, 2009 08:14 PM

Good point sABBY. Angela, and Brad and all you others, want to consider growing up a little? I know plenty of people in Australia who completely detest seal "hunting."

HOWEVER they are AWARE that most Canadians find it abhorrent as well.
Consider also, that many anti-sealing movements ORIGINATED in Canada.

One seriously does hope this is the last "hunt" we have to bear.

Posted by: Patrick Ward | February 23, 2009 11:28 PM

I agree with the boycott of Canada. Vancouver, like all host cities in their time, wants to create a good impression on people of many nations attracted to the 2010 games. Let them know that Canada needs to clean up it's brutal seal hunt before you're impressed. I'm Canadian and I love Vancouver but I love seals more.

Posted by: lynda downie | February 25, 2009 01:07 AM

A simple description of the seal "hunt" FARCE..and an important one for those who believe, Myth #10:

Canadians are cold-hearted people who support seal hunting. It is our duty to hate their guts and believe Canada (the whole country) is completely despicable.

Sorry NO! Now for the description, I spoke of.

Seal hunting is a GROSS misrepresentation of more than 91% of the Canadian population. Let us remember that. (Has a sigh here).

Sent a lovely letter to Stephen Harper, might have to send another. And another. And another.

Posted by: Neil Warne | February 25, 2009 01:41 AM

I'm from Vancouver, Canada, and I don't support seal hunting. The heartless Canadian Government doesn't care about the poor seals. I say come protest at the 2010 games.

Posted by: Cat | February 28, 2009 03:31 AM

Just an update: Senator Mac Harb, has attempted to introduce a bill to outlaw seal "hunting" but it was killed naturally, even by his own party, who said they "support a sustainable and humane seal hunt." Not. So where do we go from here? The EU has announced a trade ban on seal products from Canada, and the politicians are upset about that. So wait and see, although, I think the end is nigh. And when it comes I will be having several beers to celebrate, and even fly a Canadian flag outside my house for a week.

Posted by: Neil Warne | March 4, 2009 03:32 PM

If I couold afford to come to Ottawa for the march I would. Just to let you know i have written to NZ's government to see where we stand on this matter.

The more countries that ban seal products the better.

Posted by: anita downey | March 9, 2009 04:20 PM

I too am Canadian and have been protesting this seal hunt for several years including sending money to support protest groups, sent letter after letter to our Prime Minister and local policians.

The sealers are subsidized with OUR tax dollars! Our current and past governments turn a blind eye to this slaughter and try to justify this slaughter.

I'm glad to know Peta and all other groups are turning up the heat! Put on the pressure, the more the better.

It will be a happy and proud day in Canada when this seal hunt is stopped. These little babies deserve to live as nature intended.

It's always about the money.

Posted by: Nancy | March 9, 2009 04:35 PM

This relentless Canadian bashing is completely absurd, and any of you who HAVE been bashing the whole population of Canada should probably consider the number of Canadian PETA members before posting rediculous comments like some of those above (Angela). People also need to consider some important facts; a) most Canadians DO NOT support the seal hunt; b) NO country can say their hands are completely free of animal blood (yes Angela, that means even you and whatever country YOU'RE from); and c) it is the unfortunate demand for seal furs that keeps the hunt going, not the "cold heartedness of Canadians". If you want this seal hunt to stop, you can't blame the hunters; they're trying to feed their families. Sure, it's a horrible profession to get into, but some people might be limited in their career paths. I am completely and whole-heartedly against the seal hunt in every way,(YES, I am a Canadian), but I feel that people are being far too close-minded about this situation. The appropriate place for anger to be aimed is towards those who WEAR garments made of seal skin and therefore keep the market open for the seal hunt. And wow, THINK ABOUT YOUR INSULTING COMMENTS BEFORE YOU POST.

Posted by: Steve | March 9, 2009 05:41 PM

After so many letters and global public outrage the day of ending the seal-slaughter atrocity in Canada is on it's way,be sure...PETA won a lot of significant victories with continuous pressure to certain targets of animal abuse and that's the best,non-violent way to achieve our goal...If Gandhi could succeed and great, imperial Brittain felt on her ass than big Canada is no exception...No political force can stand such pressure and ignore so many voices endlessly...So,to be continued...

Posted by: Adriano | March 9, 2009 06:27 PM

This is so barbaric, shameful. unfathomable cruelty. - I’m boycotting anything to do with the Vancouver Olympics and am never going to Canada until it stops this bloody slaughter!

Posted by: Angela | March 9, 2009 07:16 PM

Don't hate all Canadians for the seal hunt. Everyone I know has been quite vocally opposed to it ever since it was so publicly exposed in the 70s. Rather than dissing an entire nation for the actions of a few, how about helping us pressure our government to ban this hellish slaughter? Oh and, FYI: the seal hunt has never been based in sport. Aside from the Inuit hunting seals for food, the annual slaughter of these harmless animals has always been based in the greed of the fashion industry. Please pressure the Canadian government, the Olympic Committee and the fashion houses which are using seal fur. If we all stand together, we will be heard. We can't be hating each other, as a house divided can only fall. We all bleed the same color as each other and our furry little friends.

Posted by: T.K. O'Shannahan-Hyland | March 9, 2009 08:33 PM

Everyone should boycott anything that is Canadian until this barbaric and senseless massacre is stopped totally. We, in India, who are against this lunacy, will not be watching the Canadian Olympics and will not be buying the products or even watching the ads of the companies that endorse the Canadian Olympics. I hope good sense and compassion prevails upon the people of Canada and this slaughter is stopped immediately. Our hearts are with the poor seals and our wholehearted support is with PETA.

I is very shameful thing to slaughter Seals for their fur.
Being a intelligent Human should find other alternative to FUR.Our Science and technology is touching new highs.
One should try to reduce the consumption of meat.
God given us these Analytical brain to help and co exist with nature.

Converying heartful thanks to PETA for supporting Animal which can not express their feelings in words.

In Mahatma Gandhi's words "You can judge a nation by the way it treats its animals (and mammals) come the Canadian Government - show us that you are humane and stop these horrific and barbaric acts - even your own people do not like what you are doing.

Posted by: harriet | March 10, 2009 06:24 AM

I think the only possible good that can come of the millions of lives lost in this annual slaughter is the lifting of the veil for omnivores on the senseless loss of life for our food and clothing. The seal hunt is an opportunity for vegans to take omnivores to those "glass walls" Linda McCartney spoke of and as they begin to feel outrage about the hunt, they may also begin to understand the countless other senseless sacrifices made each day to feed the human desire for stuff for the closet and stuffing for their bellies. It's on, Canada, for the seals--and for all the other unfilmed, less cuddly animals who await their pitiful deaths today.

Posted by: Ginger | March 10, 2009 07:29 AM

Please wash the blood from your hands, Canada, and put an end to the needless killing in the name of greed and vanity. Humans are too evolved now to continue take actions like this and not suffer the pain of regret and self inflicted sadness on our souls. Humans, have an internal barometer of what is just. To go ignore it and defy justice not only hurts the animals and the perpetraitors, but humanity, and life itself.

Posted by: sissel kardel | March 10, 2009 09:21 AM

CANADA is to blame for this because they allow this practice against the seals, SECOND it is the people who BUY FUR who should be ridiculed for even wearing it on their backs!!! Yes we need to focus on the source and that is the CONSUMER, if they didn't buy it there would be no market for it!!!!!!

Posted by: Susan korths | March 10, 2009 12:09 PM

I say an eye for an eye. Anyone who kills an animal in this way should have the same done to them. I bet the Canadian Government would think this is wrong so why do seals have less rights??? GO PETA!

Posted by: Kaila | March 10, 2009 03:16 PM

I was recently asked to write an article on Vancouver Canada as a travel destination ahead of the 2010 Olympics for a popular magazine of an English language publication here in Southeast Asia. Restaurant reviews, a summary of interesting retail shops, along with the city's history and tourist attractions were to be highlighted with photographs in a prominent four-page feature. Due to ethical reasons surrounding the barbaric killing methods used in the annual seal hunt, I am proud to say I will NOT write about this Canadian city nor will I have anything to do with promoting this city's endeavors -- until Canada cleans up its act and starts treating all its animals humanely.

Posted by: Samantha | March 11, 2009 12:46 AM

Dear PETA
Cruelty to animals is the thing that I feel most strongly about and take action on instances of it. We don't need fur to wear when there are cruelty-free alternatives. What else can I boycott to help the seal pups?

Posted by: Jill Balfour-Smith | March 11, 2009 06:59 PM

Posted by: Darlene Von Rhienien | March 12, 2009 11:58 AM

I am Canadian and the slaughter of seals is completely unacceptable. This has been the only time in my life I can say that I am ashamed to be a Canadian.

Posted by: Jennifer | March 12, 2009 08:49 PM

The slaughter might be inhumane but it only happens once a year - what about the US bringing horses over the border to get slaughtered in Canada under inhuman conditions?

Posted by: westcoaster | March 13, 2009 04:54 PM

Samantha what a gracious, wonderful act, to refuse to cover Vancouver! Your act has restored some faith in humane humans. There has never been nor will there ever be anything remotely humane about seal hunting. Watching the videos from the HSUS website on seal slaughter is horrifying!

Posted by: Veronica Dickey | March 13, 2009 06:05 PM

I live in Ontario and going around gathering signature for a petition to ask the government to put a ban on the seal slaughter. It would be much help if Canadians would get as much signatures as they can and mail them to PETA

Posted by: Akool | March 13, 2009 06:19 PM

I am appalled and sickened that this barbaric practice still takes place especially in a First World country like Canada. It is totally in humane and calls for a TOTAL BAN. I used to visit Vancouver often, but until the Government rules to ban the slaughter of seals, I will not spend any money in promoting Canada's tourism or trade.

Posted by: Pauline Carter-Hedger | March 14, 2009 04:31 PM

Attention all Canadians Support the Harb Seal Bill! and

Help Senator Harb to stop the massacre of seals!!

Posted by: Caro | March 23, 2009 08:13 PM

Please people, stop bashing the entire Canadian population. Only if we stand together can we stop this seal hunt. In history many wars have been lost due to the fact that there was far too much inner fighting. This is a war we must together, united. It is the only way to save those innocent seals.

Posted by: Amanda A. | March 25, 2009 10:07 AM

I am a Canadian and I am sickened by the barbaric cruelty of the commercial seal hunt in Canada. My heart aches for the seals and for all animals who endure agonizing lives and deaths for the sake of humans, whether it be in the name of fashion, food or science or just plain outright cruelty. Humans have a responsibility to care for the planet and all living creatures.

Please, PETA, please help put a stop to the seal hunt. Still, let's not assume that the average Canadian supports this shameful practice. Stephen Harper and his idiotic party must be stopped. If it means banning all Canadian products and boycotting the Vancouver Olympics until it stops, then so be it.

Posted by: Elizabeth Warkentin | April 13, 2009 07:16 PM

I must say I'm truly horrified to learn this barbaric practice has been kick-started again. I was of the belief it had been banned...
