Quiznos
I travel a lot for work, and between going to meetings, catching flights, and trying to get to hotels at a reasonable hour, I'm always on the lookout for a quick bite to eat. Quiznos has saved me many a time with its delicious toasted veggie sandwiches—but I've been troubled by its animal welfare record.

Well, Quiznos has just taken its first major step. We've been working quietly with the company for about a year, talking about the importance of animal welfare reforms to improve the lives and deaths of the animals killed for its products. Now, Quiznos has officially moved forward. It will do the following:

  • Begin phasing in the purchase of eggs from suppliers that don't cage their hens, starting with 5 percent by next year

  • Begin phasing in the purchase of pig meat from suppliers that don't confine pregnant sows to barren, metal "gestation crates" (causing extreme physical and psychological trauma), starting with 15 percent by 2012

  • Begin phasing in the purchase of turkeys killed using a less cruel slaughter method called "controlled atmosphere killing" (CAK), starting with 5 percent by the end of 2009

  • Give purchasing preference to suppliers using these less cruel production methods, including chicken suppliers that switch to CAK

Quiznos has also removed the eggs entirely from three of its four cookies. (Unfortunately, they still aren't vegan, but this will still prevent thousands of hours of suffering for laying hens).

These reforms mark the first steps forward for Quiznos, and we wish those companies resisting change would at least make similar moves (come on Subway, what are you waiting for?). That said, not eating animals (or their eggs or milk) is still the best way to help them. So while it is terrific that pigs, chickens, and turkeys will now suffer less for some of Quiznos' products, I'll stick with those veggie subs.

Great! I just ate Quiznos the other day. I got a small veggie sub that came with guacamole, black olives, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and mushrooms...I just made sure to order it without the cheese and red-wine vinaigrette dressing and I ask them to use the balsamic vinaigrette dressing instead (it's vegan!).

It would be awesome if they started offering veggie patties like Subway, any word on that?

Posted by: Kevin | February 11, 2009 12:27 PM

Fantastic for Quiznos! I shall make a point of eating there more now.

Posted by: Angela Devlin | February 11, 2009 12:34 PM

The Subway veggie patties are not vegan, unfortunately.

Posted by: Michele | February 11, 2009 12:51 PM

Subway offers veggie patties??

Posted by: Kelley | February 11, 2009 01:07 PM

I was a Subway girl until I read this.
I won't need to read it again to remember that I have a new favorite.
Congrats, Quiznos! You have a brand new customer.

That's a start!....

Posted by: Jess | February 11, 2009 04:57 PM

That is fabulous! We adopted out pet rabbit from a girl who worked at Quiznos! Apparently there are even more animal lovers there! Hope other companies take the hint and those percentages keep going up and up until they are vegetarian! (Hey, why not aim high?)

Posted by: TerryAnn | February 11, 2009 05:10 PM

Way to go!!!! Now I can begin enjoying your lovely establishment once again!

Posted by: Amy | February 11, 2009 05:19 PM

LOL, Yay! I work at Quiznos.

Posted by: Jeannie | February 11, 2009 08:02 PM

I'm vegan, but thank you Quiznos for choosing an enlightened path.

Posted by: Ali | February 11, 2009 09:01 PM

Quiznos can do much better. 5%? 15% BY 2012!? This is a joke, and it is a PR stunt. "Cage free" hens live horrible lives with thousands crammed into one big room. The only real way to help chickens is to eliminate eggs entirely. Research the "cage free" scheme, everyone. Don't get me wrong, I am an outspoken animal rights activists and a vegetarian, so I have done my research.

Posted by: travis | February 11, 2009 09:21 PM

That is excellent news! It's good to hear that a major chain like quiznos is taking real steps toward change.

Posted by: Grey | February 11, 2009 09:51 PM

That's super I will eat at Quiznos more often now!!

Posted by: Maria Betancur | February 11, 2009 11:37 PM

That's definitely a move in the right direction and hopefully this will inspire others to follow their foot-steps. I recently went from being 90% vegetarian to being a Vegan, 100% vegetarian and did so after seeing with my own two eyes the horrible brutality animals are put through by humans in order to supply meat products. It is horrific! We must persevere in educating the consumer on the realities of how these meats come about.

Thank you for the enlightnment. Without PETA, the world would be a much worse place for those without a human voice.

Posted by: Linda | February 12, 2009 01:13 AM

Great! Go Quiznos! Now that I know this, I'll pick them anyday over Subway.

Posted by: Joanna | February 12, 2009 09:16 AM

I was not aware that "red-wine vinaigrette" (Posted by: Curtis | February 10, 2009 05:48 PM) was not vegan! Could someone please enlighten me on this matter? Thanks!

Posted by: Mary Kay | February 12, 2009 09:21 AM

Hey Curtis I'm glad you had a veggie sub with no cheese and no red wine dressing but what about the bread doesen't that have eggs. I am sure no vegan but I have been trying to go veg for the past 2 years.

Posted by: Cjp2nd | February 12, 2009 05:36 PM

Travis, You have to remember that while crammed into one big room sucks, at least the hens have the chance to spread their wings and (maybe) walk around unlike ones confined to battery cages! While it's still not the best solution, at least they are taking steps towards more humane methods. Any step in in the right direction is a good step!

Quiznos is my favorite place for Vegan subs quick! I'm happy to know they are taking more compassionate steps in the right direction!

Posted by: Jalene | February 12, 2009 05:46 PM

Sounds good but all the Quzno's by me are closed. I think that they have gone under here!! I am sad because it is so hard to find a good vegetarian/vegan sandwich. I am sick of Subway and there veggie max is so freaking fattening it is so nasty!!!

Posted by: carrie bathgate | February 12, 2009 08:14 PM

I'am very impressed by the atitude from Quiznos"Excellent"
I usualy eat at Quiznos now it's is going to be my favorite. I'll tell all of my friends.

thankyou quiznos for helping animals!!! now that i know this quiznos is my favorite restaurant! i love animals so much and i hate seeing them suffer for no stupid reason!!! i also love the actor josh hutcherson!!! from movie bridge to terabithia and journey to the center of the earth!!!!

Posted by: jennifer TOBON | February 14, 2009 06:08 PM

hey, i work on an organic egg farm. our hens are prairie raised meaning they spend their entire days in the field unless they choose not to. we love our hens. i felt i needed to comment on your statment:(Unfortunately, they still aren't vegan, but this will still prevent thousands of hours of suffering for laying hens). Hens lay eggs regardless of whether or not you eat at Quiznos or anywhere else that serves eggs. just thought i would put that out there.

Posted by: ryan | February 15, 2009 06:55 PM

Cjp2nd-

I got the wheat bread. I believe both the white and wheat bread at Quiznos is dairy-free.

Posted by: Curtis | February 15, 2009 10:07 PM

Mary Kay-

The red-wine vinaigrette has little pieces of cheese in it. :( I was disappointed but like I said, just order your sub with the balsamic vinaigrette.

Posted by: Curtis | February 15, 2009 10:10 PM

My brother knows the owner of Quiznos. They have the best food, melts in your mouth. If you are single and want to meet a cute doctor, go to the shop near the University of Utah (It's close). Stay there all day. He/she will come eventually.

Posted by: Kathy | February 16, 2009 12:00 AM

That's a step in the right direction. The egg-free cookies are pretty exciting...now, if only they'd make vegan cookies, I'd be a happy girl.

Posted by: Jazz | February 16, 2009 10:52 AM

It's a start.
Hope they move forward quickly.

Posted by: Jennifer | February 17, 2009 12:46 AM

That is awesome! Definitely going in the right direction! It's great!

Posted by: angela | February 17, 2009 01:37 AM

ok...so i thought peta = vegans. yet you're ok with quizno's and the people that eat meat there bc the animals aren't "tortured" (if quiznos is gonna do it)? i'm hearing more about peta and this post kinda confused me....someone help me out. are you guys vegan/vegetarian? or will you eat meat but only from selected sources?

Posted by: jules | February 17, 2009 01:09 PM

Not all of us are completely vegetarian yet but like Quiznos, most of us are trying...I have never been to Quiznos, but now I will go.

Posted by: Rev. Meg | February 18, 2009 02:43 PM

OK so eating meat is ok as long as the source is not torturing them. gotcha. thanks for the clarification Meg! :)

Posted by: jules | February 18, 2009 05:15 PM

I'mm glad to hear that Quiznos is doing better, especially since I just tried their vegetarian sub for the first time.

Posted by: Wendy Gantos | February 19, 2009 09:55 PM

That is most excellent to hear.
I am just begining myself to become more educated on such matters.I am also attempting to become a better consumer and love to know the options are increasing of places to spend my consumer dollars.

Posted by: Deirdre | February 19, 2009 10:10 PM

i love animals. i just lost one of my soulmates this november. i like quiznos. glad to here that they are trying to do right.

Posted by: jennifer | February 19, 2009 10:13 PM

sometimes i have a hard time eating at any resturant that serves meat, but than I have to keep remembering that if we dont buy the veg/vegan products from these companies they will stop selling them. It is important to show these companies that people want more veg/vegan foods. the more we eat the veg/vegan foods the less of the animal products will be sold. Eventally maybe they will begin to stop using the animal products in favor of the veg/vegan ones. It is all in what people want and eat to what they sell.

Posted by: JulieAnn Zserdin | February 19, 2009 10:21 PM

That's really something. It's a shame we don't have companies willing to do the same here in Brazil.

Posted by: Thais | February 19, 2009 11:57 PM

I'm not a vegan but I work at an animal hospital and I see all the animals suffering all of the time and can't believe people allow such horrible methods of killing and devouring animals. Good going PETA. This is just one step closer to stopping animal cruelty!

Posted by: Hannah | February 20, 2009 02:43 AM

This is a step towards Humanity. . !!
You guyz wont regret this. . !!
Cheers!!

Posted by: Aditya Bhatt | February 20, 2009 05:03 AM

I'll eat at Quiznos every day if they keep on like this, but if they backslide, like DKNY or any of the other companies we've tried to moralize, say bye-bye to me as a customer!

Posted by: Joey | February 20, 2009 09:25 AM

I have never eaten at Quiznos but now I will go and try their Roasted veggie sandwich and also encourage friends and family to do the same.

Posted by: Ildiko Laszlo | February 20, 2009 10:11 AM

good news PETA is getting more and more succes stories lately, I'll have to give a try to quiznos vegetarian sub to encourage them!

Posted by: Jadey | February 20, 2009 10:12 AM

awesome!!! hope they're cookies can be vegan soon.

Posted by: Virginia | February 20, 2009 10:18 AM

angela-
Yes,PETA does support Vegan/Vegetarians. But, you need to look at the big picture. If the whole world could be Vegan, that would be awesome, but not reality at this point. So, to encourage a company to use more humane methods is a big deal and needs to be supported!

Posted by: Jenny | February 20, 2009 10:29 AM

WOW! This is great! A steps in the right direction! :D

Posted by: xtofuxfreakx | February 20, 2009 03:23 PM

Great Job QUizNOS. Now that u have made the promise, please live upto it.

Posted by: Man | February 20, 2009 06:48 PM

For all the other companies that still resist to make an effort: It's not hard to do, when you WANT TO...
