Child bullfighter
Recently, an 11-year-old Mexican "bullfighter," goaded on by parents who make Brooke Shields' mom look overprotective, tried to establish a Guinness world record by killing six bull calves in one day in Merida, Mexico—despite attempts by the courts and animal protection groups to cancel the event.

Bullfighting is always cruel—the bulls are often beaten in the kidneys, have Vaseline smeared into their eyes, and are given laxatives to slow them down before they are released into the ring to be stabbed to death—but this was calf-killing. Like the child "bullfighter," Michelito Lagravere Peniche, these animals were still youngsters, but, unlike him, they didn't choose to be there and they didn't want to hurt anyone. They just wanted to prance and play. To make matters worse, hundreds of other kids were brought by their parents to watch the carnage and be encouraged to emulate the little matador (literally, "murderer").

The good news is that Guinness World Records takes animal abuse seriously and has refused to publish this new "record," saying, "We do not accept records based on the killing or harming of animals." Olé to Guinness!

Disgusting.

Un-believable!!! All creatures because of our (their) nature try to stay alive and these bulls are no different. To inflict or purposly cause the death of any living, breathing, feeling creature IS ill-treat!! Because their (the bullfighter=killers') intention IS to kill the bull for the mere purpose of taking away his life for the so called entertainment of it IS dead wrong!!! And it's neither noble or fair!! EU must step up to the plate and stop funding such practises!! Some traditions just don't belong in this day and age bullfighting=murder=jailtime!!

How sad is this, and then we wonder why there's always a war going on somewhere on the planet. Abuse of animals has a direct correlation with abuse of humans.

Speaking of male calves, please limit or discontinue your use of dairy, because we all know the fate of a dairy cow's male offspring (=veal).

Kudos to Guinness though.

Posted by: Mike Quinoa | January 27, 2009 01:31 PM

that is mean becuase it is so cruel

Posted by: rafael ramirez | January 27, 2009 01:43 PM

how bout we put the kid in the ring with a real bull?

Posted by: Amber Falobas | January 27, 2009 02:23 PM

So horrific. When he goes onto humans will people still call him a hero?!

Posted by: Kelly | January 27, 2009 02:31 PM

It is very sad that these children are brought up to think that this is a game. Animals are living, breathing creatures just like humans and they do feel pain. I think bull fighting is a veruy cowardly sport(if that is what they call it)the bull has no chance.

Posted by: maegan | January 27, 2009 02:48 PM

Disgusting.

Guiness makes a good point, and I'm glad they don't want that record in their book.

Posted by: Philip | January 27, 2009 03:23 PM

What a disturbing form of macho entertainment. Unbelievably horrific and cruel. There is no excuse for this type of cruel and sadistic bloodbath.

Posted by: vegancoin | January 27, 2009 03:25 PM

@Philip
Yeah if they let this record in every asshat with a gun would probably go "Hey I killed this many (insert animal here) in one day. Record please!"

Anyway another thing is why are bull fighers held in such high standings if they have the rough up the bull prior to the actual fight? I'm not saying its the right thing to do either way but how flipping unfair is that?

Posted by: Pepsi One is Fun | January 27, 2009 05:13 PM

Absolutely.

Effing.

Disgraceful.

Shame, shame, SHAME on such cowards.

Posted by: Meech! | January 27, 2009 05:51 PM

they seriously need to get a life not take all of the bulls! if that is an entertainment game then my moms name is Henry!

Please check out and support Equanimal.org in their efforts to stop bullfighting.

um i think your entry is great but i need to ask a question. how do you enter a blog

Posted by: dylan | January 27, 2009 11:03 PM

Way to go, Guinness! Ole, indeed, Jeff!

Posted by: lynda downie | January 27, 2009 11:31 PM

i grew up with calves and i know they are playful and shy little creatures and the cutest things... this makes me so angry!! what is the F***king point of this!!! what is wrong with people in this world, even my parents (who are meat eating farmers) think this sport is cruel and absolutely ridiculous

Posted by: nicole | January 28, 2009 01:03 AM

Bravo Guinness !

What kind of man this kid is gonna be later in life? This is awful...killing calves to get into a world record book? why? For most coward act in a ring? , Most babies killed in one day by another baby? ...There is only one record here and it is the one for probably being the worst parents ever. period.

Posted by: SLC | January 28, 2009 02:10 AM

i'm afraid to see what that little brat grows up to be. way to go Guinness!!!

Posted by: katie | January 28, 2009 04:15 AM

Vile, sickening and so so wrong. What kind of parents bring their children along to watched innocent creatures being slaughtered for entertainment, let alone encourage their offspring to take part??
Bull fighting is wrong on so many levels but this story is especially disgusting and I dread to think how this kid will turn out...

Posted by: Lauren | January 28, 2009 07:57 AM

These parents are sick. How about teaching children compassion? I'm sorry but I hope this kid gets a good beating from a very angry bull CALF. Although I am sure they drug the poor animal and give him any disadvantage in the book. Bastards.

Posted by: NT | January 28, 2009 08:00 AM

I know that bull fighting is part of their heritage, but, come on! This is a disgrace to the human race! Move forward, not backwards toward cruelty!Sick!!Think of all the children being born into this kind of upbringing?!

Posted by: phyllis | January 28, 2009 09:53 AM

Every human being should be taught that torture and inhumane killing is wrong. I struggle with feelings of sadness and hate every day for those that participate in these acts thinking that humans are worth more than any other living thing. I hope it all comes back to them some day, but I wish it would happen before so many other animals will have to suffer.

Posted by: christy | January 28, 2009 09:57 AM

what a hideous freak! and kudos to guinness!

Posted by: animalfriend | January 28, 2009 10:31 AM

How could such a revolting public exhibition of torture by children on animals be allowed in a so called civilized country!

Posted by: Maureen | January 28, 2009 10:37 AM

OMG! This is horrible! I can't believe parents are proud of having a murderer as their child. Simply disgusting. Can you imagine how this kid will turn out as an adult???

Posted by: Tatiane Barbosa | January 28, 2009 12:45 PM

Children killing children!

Wow! Way to go, Mexico! You're leading the way in perpetuating cruelty, violence and barbarism.

What kind of a man will this child become?

Posted by: SusanT | January 28, 2009 12:47 PM

Guinness should have acknowledged the record. Now they all died for nothing.

Posted by: Carne Vor | January 28, 2009 02:48 PM

Children see. Children do.

Oftentimes, children imitate what their parents think is appropriate. This vicious cycle goes on and on. How terrible! I've been teaching my 2nd grade students that bulls are not as bad as these horrific sport makes them look!

Posted by: Analyn | January 28, 2009 11:01 PM

I cannot find words to express my rage.Bull fighting is a hideously cruel and cowardly thing. It should be stopped.Excuse me for saying this but f..k their heritage/culture regarding bull fighting.Any culture that allows the suffering of animals should be reviewed and altered. This is one of the most ABSOLUTELY DISPICABLE things I have ever seen.
Thank you GBOR for refusing to publish this.

Posted by: Debbie Barnes | January 29, 2009 08:10 AM

This is one of the most baffling stories I've ever read.

However, unlike your article stated, I'm not 100% sure the kid 'chose' to do that. His parents are probably behind the acts.

This boy needs to be reformed before he starts to become Spain's next seriel killer.

This is an absolute joke.

Posted by: David Brady | January 29, 2009 10:47 AM

Guiness took the right decision in this case... I already dislike that animals are killed for meat... but when they are for FUN it litteraly pisses me out of any reasonable limits... And when people get their kids to do it just for their own amusement it's even worse, the parents of this kid just found the perfect way to make a psychopath out of their son...

Posted by: Jadey | January 29, 2009 12:51 PM

Carne Vor,

The bulls did die for nothing; that's the point. By legitimizing the act with a record, someone would try and break the record. Is the light bulb going on yet?

Posted by: Derek, MD | January 29, 2009 04:37 PM

As a Mexican-American speaking, I do not understand why a child is being "pushed" to do such cruelty, the poor calves did not have a chance to see life. And they call this "tradition" yeah, my a** it is. huh!

This is what pisses me off, the men act very "machistas" and yeah they decide to take it on animals aswell. No Conjones whatsoever.

PETA, Is there anything we can do about this?

P.S. That little kid will start to kill in the future, since he basically enjoys it already because he killed 6 calves. He will get used to it and will kill humans. It's true. He needs help, so do his parents.

Posted by: Mari | January 29, 2009 08:29 PM

"Is the light bulb going on yet?"
LOL
Always love your sharp sassy wit, Derek.

Posted by: lynda downie | January 29, 2009 09:47 PM

This mindless and cowardly macho insanity is exactly what ails society today. It is this kind of linear unobjective greed and irresponsible anthropocentric non-thinking that is destroying the world.

Posted by: vegancoin | January 30, 2009 12:27 PM

There is no excuse for this. All bullfighting should be outlawed.

Posted by: Krystal Miller | January 30, 2009 01:19 PM

Ah, I'm so very happy Guinness refused to publish the "record". Great job! Honestly, how can people get enjoyment out of watching animals get tortured?

Posted by: Anna | January 30, 2009 03:01 PM

I am so horrified at the inhumane nature that soke people posess, and then unfortunately pass on to children. Hopefully most will see this act as disgusting and torturous. All living things deserve to be treated with respect.

BABIES?! You can't be serious. Killing adults is bad enough, but BABIES?!!!? They can't even defend themselves!

Posted by: Ari | April 2, 2009 11:46 AM

what kind of parents bring their children to watch this, and encourage their children to do this?!

Posted by: sarah clark | April 20, 2009 10:24 PM

Seeing this boy follow his parent's animal-killing example makes me really appriciate the fact that I didn't follow MY parent's animal-killing examples. (My mom and dad are huge meat supporters, my dad fishes, and my parents force one of our dogs to live outside her whole life, two of them to go outside an hour a day and for the rest of the time, sit in a small cage together, and the other two to live in the backyard all day and all night with no supervision. One of our dogs just died when he ate a poisonous frog because he was unsupervised. Plus, my mom breeds dogs, !purebreeds!, who are kept in a small cage covered in feces. She doesn't even care about thier health, just the money she will make off of them. A little girl puppy keeps whining to get out, yet only my brother and I (Both of us are preeteens) can hear her pain and misery!

R.I.P. Beau, the best mutt in the world. Lab/husky He was beautiful, playful, fluffy, and he had one brown eye and one blue eye!
