Apparently, NBC has something against girls who love their veggies. After we submitted our proposed Super Bowl ad, which features a comely crop of models demonstrating their fondness for fresh produce, NBC nixed the ad, saying it "depicts a level of sexuality exceeding our standards." No joke, this is straight from NBC—so stop fondling your fruit salad right now and read the list of shots NBC requested we cut before they’d reconsider:

  • licking pumpkin

  • touching her breast with her hand while eating broccoli

  • pumpkin from behind between legs

  • rubbing pelvic region with pumpkin

  • screwing herself with broccoli (fuzzy)

  • asparagus on her lap appearing as if it is ready to be inserted into vagina

  • licking eggplant

  • rubbing asparagus on breast

OK, I'll admit, it's not the Jonas Brothers eating apple pie, but it sure does drive home the fact that vegetarians make better lovers. And I'm pretty sure that most Super Bowl fans would find the ad a lot more appealing than the impotence and other not-so-sexy effects that a steady stream of chicken wings and burgers can have on their love lives.

Why so grouchy NBC? Sounds like someone’s not getting enough um…vegetables. I’m thinking network execs could really benefit from a broccoli booty call.

Love the ad, but then again, the Super Bowl IS a family event - so I definitely understand why it was rejected.

That said, I hope NBC and other networks definitely restrict advertisements such as the Friday the 13Th movie trailer. My 6 year-old son certainly didn't need to see that!

Not to sound old fashioned, but I don't think that is something kids need to see. We all know that millions of kids will be watching the Super Bowl and this is something I wouldn't want my kids to see.
If this was a late night add when kids are supposed to be in bed, I don't have a problem with it.

I think the ad is super hot! I can't wait to let my husband watch it :-) With that, I mean only my husband, it's not something I want my toddlers to see. I think NBC should maybe play the ad on later shows that they know there won't be so many kids watching.

Of course, NBC will allow suggestive Victoria's Secret ads, and violent gory ads about slasher movies, or penile dysfunction discussion ads, but not this. It doesn't make sense!

Beth, they control Super Bowl ads precisely because of the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction." The network had no idea that was going to happen, yet they got fined by the FCC because of it. So now this network is careful about the content of commercials, since that is something they can screen in advance. They don't want to be fined. It actually makes perfect sense from their point of view.

I like the ad, but I'm honestly not surprised it was rejected for this particular program. Ads slanted toward human health or protection of the environment would have been more suitable, and most likely accepted.

Use this ad in a more adult-oriented media, but create a more appropriate veg PSA for the Super Bowl.

Oh, please! I am totally pro-vegetarian and support the message here, but it's the Superbowl--in the middle of the day. My 7 and 9 year old children will be watching the game as will many thousands of other children. NBC was right to reject it. Place the ad in the evening, after the kids have gone to bed.

Did PETA ever try to get that singing cow commercial on television?

If anything that would atleast be a WTF moment for alot of people watching and would get your message across to alot of people. Plus there would be no reasoning for why that commercial would be banned because its not inapropriate. Its just singing cows. :) How could NBC say no to that?

I really can not understand why this should be banned. There are so many other bad commercials on television, so why would this one be banned. Sure there are a few things in this video that may be explicit for children, but really who is going to stare and examine the commercial like NBC has done? no one. I honestly think this commercial is a great commercial and PETA should fight for it to be aired.

Yes, I've seen worse on other programs, too, but I was at least informed beforehand. As the mother of four sons, while I find the ad quite imaginative, I believe it is inappropriate for air during the Super Bowl, or any other programming that does not contain a rating that cautions viewers.

I have to agree with NBC for banning the provcactive commerical from the line up. I have younger children who will be watching the superbowl that need not be exposed to the sexual content of this commercial. If you want to get the message across, it should be done tastefully and not showing girls in lingerie licking veggies or stroking themselves with asparagus. I applaude NBC for banning this commercial.

It's a great ad but inappropriate for daytime tv. I think a lot of superbowl ads are inappropriate but that isn't a reason to put yet another one on. As for sex being natural and kids should see nature..um...having a sexual appetite for vegetables is not natural so I have no idea what you people are talking about. Beyond that, having my kids watch people having sex or eluding to having sex with people or vegetables is not necessarily my idea of responsible sex ed.

Ok the video would have been great, if only it didn't look like women were having sex with the veggies. Now I am not a religious fanatic but my twin 6 Y/O boys watch the Super Bowel with us and I feel this was kind of pushing it a little too far, not that other commercials don't. But my kids usually don't watch those shows that air those kinds of commercials. Sorry PETA, I would just take out the parts that look like sex with broccoli and then have it air. Lets not pervert our children to get a point across. Even if I am unpopular now with this site, my kids are worth it. Would you want yours to see it?

Although I understand the idea behind the advertisement, I find it is totally inappropriate to air during the Super Bowl. There are families with children that watch the game and the commercials are a big part of it. Besides, do you really think you're going to convert that many beer chugging, pepparoni pizza chomping, meat loving football grunts into vegetarians?

Brilliant :) I just adore this add. I hate how networks are all prudish about this stuff, it's a really gorgeous ad. There's nothing wrong with sex, and it has a great message to boot... Think of this ad as bait. I'm betting that PETA made it with the goal of having NBC reject it - which would create controversy, news and ultimately a whole bunch of non-veg folks coming to the PETA site to view the ad out of curiousity - only to end up seeing the 'reasons to be veg' video, and maybe thinking seriously about becoming veg. Smart move by PETA - much better than spending $100K per second for a Superbowl ad.

Im from England and who gives a monkeys about the superbowl .... bring it over to the UK were more open minded about these issues ... we would broadcast PETA's great work all over prime time TV ... its a great ad , would get people taking and gets the message across ! I believe thats the intention of adverts .. product awareness .. This ad and the controversy brought me to your site. Bravo for great publicity! The ads are extremely hot and do bring up a great point...no pun intended, sex sells we all know. The more important point of my post is that I watch the "Chew On This" video afterwards. I've been to a slaughter house, have seen animal mistreatment, and love my pets. Currently I'm a meat eater. I think after your video, Chew on this, I will very strongly begin to NOT eat meat. Horribly powerful. Just horrible. Thank you.

I agree with Hunter that the commercial does nothing to further PETA's cause. If that is the only way to draw attention, I think there are more creative ways to do it that get people's attention. BTW - it is not family friendly for the Super Bowl.

Sexy add but why doesn't PETA take the veggie show on the road and open up a chain of restaurants? If Hooters can do it and their food was mostly awful, then PETA can too, because veggies taste oh so good. North Americans are tired of eating the same old fast food garbage. A fabulous veggie restaurant with servers dressed in forest nymph costumes would be a nice change of pace and would certainly convert some male meat eaters.

She is not referring to the PETA spot, however the Carl's Jr. commercial feat. Paris Hilton that caused such an uproar... which was of course aired on NBC as well as a host of other networks.

I was a vegetarian for 10 years, I do agree that it is a healthy lifestyle, I will not be watching the Superbowl because I think it's lame, and my biggest concern is the hypocrisy and censorship!

I think NBC is being a little biased. They will allow violent ads for movies, beer commercial's with scantily clad women, and Victoria's Secret ads are all the rage, but no Veggie Love?

The ad was certainly too risque for family prime time...but it is certainly brilliant advertising on their part. P.E.T.A. states NBC requested that they cut out a few things to make it a little less provocative and they are refusing to do so.

If they truly wanted the ad on during the Super Bowl how difficult would it be comply? They know that NBC has to comply with FCC regulations or be fined, so they knew this was coming. They just wanted the free advertising.

If you continue to watch the video it further discusses the many reasons to become a vegetarian, one of them being better sex. Supposedly being an unhealthy meat eater causes impotence. Hmm...draw all the sexually curious men over to the website and put the possible impotence seed in their head...pretty smart...

P.E.T.A is just jumping on the "sex sells" wagon with everyone else. I notice there are a lot of non-vegetarians commenting on here, so it seems to be doing the job it was intended free of charge. Good work P.E.T.A. !

Only thing I would recommend is that you put a man or two in the commercial next time. Make it seem like the vegetarian is more attractive to women than the non-vegetarian. I can see that a lot of meat eaters are infuriated that these women are having more fun with their veggies than with with them. ;)

Good ad. I doubt, though, that anybody ever expected that it would be approved. This is viral marketing. By creating an ad that was sure to be rejected, PETA is generating a lot more attention and publicity than if the ad had actually aired during the super bowl. During the game it would simply get lost in the shuffel os all the other overpriced ads featuring half-naked women etc etc.

We can't forget that there are also a lot of kids that watch the super bowl with their parents and I don't think I would want my kids catching a glimpse of the add. Awesome ad - I understand not showing it during the Super Bowl - HOWEVER, to all of you that say this ad will never get shown and PETA needs to make one that they know can get on the air - HOW on EARTH is this different from all the other ads that use sex to sell? I've seen worse commercials actually on the air. I think it will and should make it to the air, probably late night, but that's OK. This ad should not be approved to play during the Super Bowl. There's no need to do it, yeah it may be eye catching, but is that what PETA stands for? Promoting the idea that sex sells...I hope not. I think that the video that plays after the OVERLY SEXY GROSS ASPARAGUS AND PUMPKIN VIDEO is A LOT more powerful, right now my stomach actually hurts from watching it and next time I go to eat a piece of meat I will remember those images. What does PETA want- something guys will watch to get off or something that will leave a lasting impression on everyone's mind? I think it is also funny because I just have a huge lurking feeling that PETA made this commercial in efforts, not for people to actually see the ad during the Super Bowl, but the fact that they would be willing to take some time out of their day and actually go and watch the video for themselves, and then end up watching the second part of the video that has no sexual connotation at all. In a superbowl commercial preview I saw getting her clothes ripped off in public, and they are going to air that commercial, yet the PETA commercial is banned? I say air the commercial and if the parents don't want their own little monkeys to watch, put them out side and let them get some much needed excercise on their swing sets while the superbowl is on. I thought the ad was amusing if a little over the top. But as others have said it's no worse than other sexual selling you see on the TV. Far better that than the violence you see all the time and I bet some of the kids that are being 'protected' are allowed to watch that.
Good strategy to get the publicity without having to spend all that money but I am intrigued as to the basis for the claim.

I think this commercial is despicable. Before I get blasted let me say that I know there are bad things on television. Victoria's Secret commercials aren't the cleanest commercials, but they sell underwear. What do you expect them to show in their commercials? Beer commercials aren't as bad as you people make them out to be. I fully support NBC's decision. It's their network, and they decide what to put on during the Super Bowl. You can't cry foul play if they reject it and it hurts your feelings. If they rejected you, it's probably for a legitimate reason, not because you advocate vegetarianism. I'm sorry but if someone doesn't see the vast difference between the suggestiveness in this ad and other advertisements in the past, then our country really does need a morals check. I do agree that there isn't much difference in the visual of the women much like Victoria Secrets ads. But those women are not about to shove broccoli in their vajayjays. Incidentally, I think the ad is funny and entertaining but it's not appropriate for the majority of Americans who will watch the Super Bowl. Do you really want to explain this to your children? As a mother of 8, I agree that this video is way over the top for family viewing. Kids aren't stupid and they do notice things, why do you think kids are having sex as young as 9 years old? Because suggestive things are on TV constantly and they think they are missing out on it. Too bad we can't help keep them stay kids longer. You only have so long to be a kid, why force them into growing up before they are ready. There are lots of places people can go to look at stuff that will stimulate them. To the folks who have commented that a commercial like this will "corrupt" their kids: Get real. I guarantee you that every 10-year-old kid has seen things on TV and the internet that are a zillion times worse than this. And they've probably also seen all the porn that you have "hidden" in the bedroom closet. It's a bit ironic that people are perfectly OK with allowing their kids to watch the game itself--four hours of non-stop, intentional violence--but freak out about a 30-second commercial. Kids don't care about this stuff, they just think it's funny or stupid (and trust me, they know that you're being a hypocrite when you freak out about it). A TV commercial won't turn your kid into a pervert or serial killer--bad parenting will.

The reasoning of NBC is much like the reasoning once used by the United States Justice department when Larry Flint was attempting to prevent his magazine being put behind the counter. He showed an image of a man with his head blown open by a bullet from a mercenary magazine ( the Merc magazine could be viewed by children on the magazine shelf) and then a beautiful nude woman beside it and asked which you would rather have your children see. Take this into perspective now and ask yourself which you would rather have your child see death, murder and mayhem on NBC television shows or a funny suggestive but informative commercial. I chose the Veggies.

It's good that NBC rejected it, as otherwise it would have cost $3million!

Instead, PETA is getting plenty of airtime on youtube, and to an even bigger captive audience than the Superbowl would have provided.

Let's use the $3million price tag to something even better - like kids nutrition education and PCRM-related initiatives.

It's the women who control the men.

If men believe that meat-eating is a sexual turn-off (as this ad implies) then they are more likely to quit the meat (or at least cut back on it).

This is the way to go.

The only reason I am glad this advert got banned was for all that delicious free publicity . But make no mistake , the Super Bowl is not and has never been family programming , in fact very few professional athletic outlets are at all family friendly these days . I am a total jock myself and I would never let a young child watch the Bowl . Not because of the sexy Victoria's Secret stuff but because of all of the ads promoting alcoholism and violence , often against women. In my mind's eye , Peta's and Victoria's Secret ads are harmless. The ads equating alcohol and violence towards animals with sex are dangerous. Drink this beer and you'll hook up with chicks . Well what if the lady doesn't want your drunk arse anywhere near you? (Or your burger-eating limp weenie) And professional Football is undeniably violent by it's nature. These are adult men paid very well to be even more violent than necessary for the integrity of the sport . And no other professional sport uses the exploitation of women to its benefit like the NFL . The difference between the Peta ads and others is essentially the fact that these hotties might be exploiting male vulnerabilities to promote an ethical end as opposed to the NBC status quo , which is to exploit women as entertainment playthings who exist to serve you that burger and beer.

Nothing against the ad but I do have to question the scientific merit of suggesting that vegetarians have better sex. Studies actually show that is not necessarily true. If there's no hard scientific evidence that support PETA's claim, I tend to think this ad is just meant to "shock and awe." It may get attention in the beginning but is it really going to change people's dietary and lifestyle habits?

Oh my Veggies! That was steamier than any broccoli I've ever had. The ad is fine, and certainly not any worse than anything else on NBC. I am a newcomer to this site, and it was the controversial ad that peaked my interest. I have looked through some of the other videos, and one about the mistreatment of cows brought tears to me eyes. I won't become a vegetarian over night, but I will consider the alternatives.

This ad may have been rejected by NBC but it has certainly been viewed by A LOT of people and they did not have to pay the three million dollars for thirty seconds of NBC's precious time. I like the ad! I like Peta's positioning of the add. I like the fact that by creating a spot that was sure to get rejected for an ad spend of around $2 million they have reached an audience of millions for FREE! They can put that $2 million bucks to good use coming up with the next ten impossible to air superbowl ads. Good strategy.

If this had be a fat man doing the same thing with a double cheeseburger, people would have laughed and the commercial would have been aired. Although this ad is a little explicit, but so are other Super Bowl commercials I've sen in the past, I think a big factor in this not getting aired is directly linked to PeTA and it's vegetarian and animal compassion stance. People are so criticizing of a "lifestyle" different from the mainstream. If the meat industry can have their ads, why can't we have veggie ads? Because face it....PeTA was just trying to hop on the "sex sells" band wagon. And if you don't want your kids to see racy or scary ads on TV, then have them read a book or change the channel!!

While I think PETA has made some very creative and effective commercials, and knows how to utilize the "outrageous" to make a point, this commercial will probably bother many parents of school-age kids who might be watching the Super Bowl. It will also be a turnoff for adults who feel there is already too much sexual content on TV. Yes, there is plenty of hypocrisy on the tube, what with Viagra, wardrobe malfunctions and Victoria Secrets, but this ad just adds to the overall culture of "sex-sells."

I also wonder what this ad cost to produce (let alone what it would have cost to air it.) As a PETA member I kind of feel like I contributed to something that I would rather not have vs. having money go towards animal rescues,undercover exposes, or family-friendlier ads for vegetarianism.

I don't agree with NBC's decision at all. I'm not trying saying I completely agree with some of PETA's philisophy's but free speech is part of this country. Some of these people complaining about their kids and such, turn your kids away then. I personally think this ad is awesome. It's getting more attention because it was banned, which I think is great.

To everyone who is complaining they don't want their kids to see it, what about all those video games that have huge guns killing people, swearing and blood flying everywhere? I personally would rather have my kids see this commerical instead of playing violent video games or watching other crap that's on TV.

There are sooooo many things on TV worse than this ad and children watch it all the time. THe only reason it was banned was because it was about being a vegetarian. If the same type of commerical was run about other things it wouldn't have been banned.

I'd also like to see the studies showing vegetarians have better sex. I think it would be a very difficult association to prove, as other factors associated with being a vegetarian also would have an effect on sex.

The ad is very provacative and love it, Kudos. I do see why NBC banned this ad. You do not see in Victoria Secrets ad, women licking anything or doing something suggestive with anything, whether it is fruits, veggies, or meat. They just model underwear.
Also in which research study did it reveal vegatarians have better sex?
We all know smoking is bad for you, but they have research to back that up, nothing on sex and vegatarianism had been proven yet and probably never will.

Also since there is alot of people bringing up about Janet Jackson with her superbowl incident, does anyone remember the outcome of that? I certainly did.

Personally, I like the ad, and I disagree with it's being banned. There have been plenty of sexy ads: Paris Hilton and the Carl's Jr burger, any Axe body wash ad, depicting sexual acts or alluding to them. I think it's a shame that an orginization that's trying to educate people, albeit through sex, but we all know that sex sells, can't be heard. But these mega corporations that only seem to care about the bottom dollar can put out the same types of ads all of the time. It's a fucking double standard, but that's what this country was founded on.

Lol, I love the message, but yeah, it is a bit too racy for the superbowl- or pretty much any other time, actually - and this is coming from a teenager. I agree that there are ads out there which are controversial, of questionable morality - but i think we can all safely agree that even beer, car, and lingerie commercials don't hint at masturbation, least of all with vegetable products... I'd like to see a PETA ad hit mainstream, for although the publicity is certainly good from this controversy, at the same time it makes me a bit sad to see PETA stooping to the level of low-brow sex appeal to sell vegetarianism. :(

I suppose you've gotta have a balance between ads which are moral/"negative" (though that's too strong a word, it's the best I can think of) and those which are more "positive," like this one aims to be. But still, PETA! my 13 yo son thought it was funny. i thought it was funny. i've been veggie since 1985, he was born veggie and stayed that way for many years. he still won't eat red meat or pork products and hates fish, so he's darn close.

If any parent thinks that their child of at least 5 years of age hasn't already been bombarded with images of guns, sex, or drugs on the television they are fooling themselves. Parental protection of the media is a nice myth, however this is simply another example of the modest nature of the american public and the conglomerates above them stands firm yet again. Its about cash dollars not your children. If the wrong sponsors/funding pulls out because they feel a little squeamish about a spot, NBC puts their balls into their hands and calls it good. I think we all need to go abroad and see what their advertising is all about, this prudent population needs a lesson or two.

I feel sorry for that individual who said that he has NO RESPECT FOR DEVOUT CHRISTIANS because they are hipocrites.

First of all, God did not create humans to eat meat. God gave humans a "temporary" permission to eat meat, after the flood, because everything had been destroyed.

Unfortunately, in our sinful nature, we tend to eat meat and from that we are destroying our selves because meat if eaten excessively can cause many health problems.

I think PETA should also be concerned with trying to convince companies like Boca and Morning Star to keep their prices affordable for everyone.

I guess price is another reason why alot of consumers rather buy a bag of real chicken nuggets for a cheaper price instead of buying Morning Star Chik'n nuggets that contain about 9 nuggets per package for over $3.

It's even worse with the economy crisis that this nations is going through. People go for what is more affordable. Keep in mind that products made of vegetable and soy are way cheaper and the production of meat. There is no reason to be high priced. So why sell vegetarian products for a such high prices? That is not fair.

I do eat meat and I do incorporate some vegetarian products in my diet and believe me I do feel the difference. I don't know if I will ever go full vegetarian, but at least I am trying to be.

Eating meat is an addiction like other people who have sex or drug addictions. It is hard to change completely from one day to another. It is a slow process.

I do feel like the ad did go to extremes just like other none peta commercials that have been too explicit when trying to inform the public. We don't need our children to watch that. I do like peta and what they try to do for animals. They are great!

I just don't think they should focuse to much on using vegan celebrities to do their commercials because some have issues they need to resolve before trying to be role models convincing children to stop eating meat.

I also feel like we should just try to be more understanding and respectful for those who do eat meat. We are human and imperfect. Humans are sinful and have free will. We are not puppets being controlled by God. We decide what we want to do with our lives.

(Hopefully, the indivual who posted that comment about Christians recgonizes that not all Christians are what he thinks they are. I hope he is not like that person who posted a video on youtube stereotyping that a large percentage of inmates in prison are Christians. DUH! Christians are a majority. So I guess, if it were the other way around, making the majority of atheist inmates, that would make them bad people and Christians the good guys? WRONG!!! Let me tell you that Christians accept they have a problem and that is the reason they go to church and seek God. We admit that we are not perfect and we make mistakes all the time. I am married to an ateist who eats meat, but he don't agree with vegetarianism eventhough he agrees with the good treatment of animals. Keep in mind that non-Christians also eat meat. You should not judge people, by what they believe or eat, but what comes out of their mouth)

I have to say that after viewing the PETA ad, rejected by NBC for Superbowl, I did not find it to be any more offensive than one might find, say, in ads for underwear marketed by Victoria Secret. In fact, I found the concept to be much less offensive. After all, the ad is not promoting sex, which Victoria Secret ads certainly are. The ad is promoting a vegetarian lifestyle solely for the purpose of promoting the advocacy of the rights of the animals with which we share this planet. And they do have the right to exist free of fear and abuse, as do all living things. I wonder what it is that NBC fears.

I think the TV people where right to ban this commercial. I mean I'm 13 and when I saw this vid I was glad my lil sister wasn't sitting behind me. I mean I think this is completely inappropriate for TV. PETA should try doing some more tv commercials without all the sex and stuff in it

i'm not sure what ads they WILL play during the super bowl, but generally their reason for rejecting ads is because they contradict the messages of other advertisers.

PETA is not alone in getting shut down by NBC. When Adbusters has tried to run spots during the super bowl, they were rejected because the spots were critical of consumer culture.

As a lot of people said, there are other bad commercials to, I'm more disappointed that PETA would stoop to their level. They should have been smart enough to know, this would have no impact on anyone's food choice. All they think is hey! did you see that PETA commercial that got banned because of the hot girls screwing veggies?! No one will even take in the message. PETA should have done a commercial showing videos or pictures of the animals being mistreated, so people could see the horrible things that happen to them. Instead they make a stupid commercial that will only put sex in the viewers mind and not the message. I'm very disappointed with PETA.

I wrote to NBC telling them how ridiculous they are banning the PETA ad considering the ads they did allow this year...one ad shows a man throwing a snow globe at another man's testicles while another ad shows a man being thrown out of a window many stories above the ground...c'mon NBC...you are insulting me with your hypocrisy. They are just scared to death that all of the meat-eating sports fans are going to storm the NBC headquarters with snow globes in hand...

PETA accomplished what they set out to do. How many viewers would otherwise not even know what PETA stands for? Way to go PETA. Cruelty is one thing but how about all those furs the rich and the famous love to drape themselves in? Eating meat is unversal and not going to stop but trapping and snares should be mentioned in the "ad" also.

I understand that sex sells, and maybe its not that sexual the add but it made me laugh nerviously.
Its sad that NBC rejected the add but lets see it fro mtheir point of view.. if you take away the few words it has I would have thought it was a late night commercial form adult swim. Isnt Supper bowl like family bonding time? Its one of the few times my dad and younger brothers have to spend time with each other. IF my mom saw this, I bet Super Bowl would be banned in my family.

By rejecting the PETA ad - NBC and it parent lost out on a great opportunity to leverage their brand "Imagination at Work" for their shareholders.

I would at this point wholeheartedly support anything that can stimulate the economy.

I do not agree with NBC, decision. But, I can understand it because most ad are from companies who use meat a lot in their product. I do not think I need to give names.

But, there is one concern about going vegan. I live in a canadian surburb of Montreal, Laval, and there are not that much veggies options in my area :( Or, they are too expensive! :(

Has anyone ever heard of the term "dumb as a fox"? PeTA knew the ad wouldn't get on the air during the superbowl- but would get plenty of exposure. Smart move! Also-speaking of not-too-racy-for-NBC Victoria's Secret, I once wrote a letter of complaint to their corporate offices regarding their Holiday ad a couple of years back where the models trounce about in lacy undies and "speak" to men buying them gifts saying various things including "bring me to my knees". Wow, Vick's, that was subtle. I received the standard automated response, and heard nothing further- but I will note that I never saw that particular line in the ad ever again. I would rather read about organizations like PeTA wanting to place high-priced ads where millions will see them, but instead using the money in more economical ways. I think that Palin doing an interview in front of a slack-jawed yokel slaughtering chickens was my favorite pro-veg "ad" as of late.

I only read the first couple comments, and I decided, for some odd reason, to state something, even though someone else might have done the same thing.

first off, that is an amazing ad. I never considered being Veg until I saw the "Chew on this" video, but I still not one. This, though, caught my eye on myspace. and kept it. and here I am, on peta. org, considering going veg for lent to at least try it. thus, if this was shown, it would probable get a lot of peoples eyes.

second, i see why NBC didn't show the ad. simple put, the kids. It would be too much for them. sure, the system is whacked, showing violence around the world, and other types of ads, but not this one (among other ads that were banned), but that doesn't justify having grade school students seeing this.

There was only one purpose to this ad people. To get banned so that you all would go to the peta.org website, which you did and now you are watching and reading and hopefully learning. There is more info here that in 1000 one minute ads and and at a fraction of the cost of a single ad on the superbowl.

Great advertisment as always. Next time you could maybe explain to everyone why we vegetarians have better sex but overall you got the message across (and great press). But hey, it's pretty blatant that NBC dropped the add because of their own hipocrasy and not that it was too distasteful. In fact, superbowl ads are usually the epiphany of distaste. Next time you may want to PBS the add though (by that I mean tone it down to PBS standards) if you want to see it air. Then they can't turn you down... or can they? I'm sure they'll find a way. It's tough to beat out the Hillshire Farms and Tyson pull have on marketing most agents. Oh yeah, before I finish, I gotta say I'm loving you more and more lettuce ladies. I'm 36 and have an eight year old daughter. I definitely agree this was not appropriate for a super bowl ad. I want to send my children the message that being vegetarian will make you strong and compassionate. I think a much better ad would have been to showcase some strong veg atheletes or perphaps a slightly sexy muddy co-ed football game where the players are punting pumpkins and throwing broccoli spears.

I can understand where they are coming from it was erotic however anytime you turn on tv or listen to pop music it's all about sex. people who are supposed to be teenage role models are all about sex, sex, sex. MTV performances, song lyrics, movies, commercials, movies and television it seems that its everywhere. So as per usual the hypocrisy is there I believe it had more to do with the fact it was PETA then the commercial. I do agree with one person men should have been included. Either way I support PETA wholly. One last thing the exposure to teenagers well no matter what teenagers are exposed to this everywhere and teenagers today are not like they were 10/20 years ago they are having sex younger and younger so seduction is not new

I loved it! Way to go PETA! I thought it was sexy and very inspiring. Everyone knows that sex sells. NO one has said anything when it comes to advertising for cars, beer, liquor, vigra, male enhancements, etc but let them advertise for the ethical treatment of animals and they are denied the right to show their message. It is okay for children to watch commercials that encourage smoking, drinking, etc. Trust me when I say that children hear and see worse things everyday. I support PETA, ASPCA, FCAP, Humane Society and NO KILL shelters. I am NOT a vegan but would gladly change after seeing this commercial...eat healthy yeah! LOL....Great commercial.

I agree with NBC's decision ... what they showed was bad enough ... do you know how hard it is to keep your finger triggered on the remote buttom during all the commercials throughout the Superbowl ... when you have little kids watching the game? I already sent my issues to NBC and the NFL with the commercials they aired. Little kids don't need to be scared through movie trailers, or see violence from NBC network show advertisements or sex from companies trying to make a buck!

Give me a Break!!!! The commercial was wonderful. There is something else going on here. Someone else wanted the ad space, and were willing to pay more per second for the spot. Sounds like a lawsuit might be necessary, to get to the truth. Everything is about the almighty dollar. Follow the money. It sucks!

I noticed this only because I was looking at Super Bowl ads online.
1. I am not a vegetarian myself, but am not opposed to the lifestyle either.
2. I agree that there are other ads that could very well be deemed inappropriate, but getting a message across by shock and awe (which was EXACTLY the aim here) is not the way to go for a general audience (Super Bowl viewers).
3. By all means, this could go on TV, but preferably on cable, if not after 10pm anywhere else.

I can see why this wasn't shown. It's way more over the top than any Victoria's Secret commercial and even the Paris Hilton (for Burger King) ad. These girls are not only rolling around in lingerie (which is all Victoria's Secret commercials amount to, girls standing around in lingerie with wind machines) but they also appear to be moments away from inserting vegetables into themselves. There are much better ways to get this message across.

I'm a vegetarian (going on 11 years), and I think it's a cheesy ad. Sure, sex sells, but this ad reduces vegetarianism to the levels of other meaningless consumer goods.

BTW, are any of those models vegetarians? My body is awesome (I look like I'm in my 20s), and my sexual stamina is better than my younger partner's, but I don't need to flaunt it. IMHO, poor way to market vegetarianism.

I personally liked the ad but I'm glad it was rejected since I have kids in their early double digits and there's enough for them to deal with at this age. The doritos ad with the woman's coat being blown off and then all of her under wear being shown was bad enough. That part was unnecessary but this would have been way too much. I'm enjoying the taste of different vegetables more often as I get older and I'm going to try asparagus again real soon!

Thank you for your consideration and taking time to respond to my concerns. Because we both know the issue is terribly important, I would like to respond to certain items in your letter. I am a professor of philosophy who routinely teaches courses on animal ethics and I rely on your educational materials often. So please know that I am devoted to animal liberation and respect the fact that PETA has put the animal issue on people’s radar. Nevertheless, despite my shared interest, I have strong reservations about this and so many other similar ads sponsored by PETA.

You admit the ad is “provocative,” but your defense is that it is no different from other ads sponsored by the beer and fast-food industries. I agree. However, two wrongs do not make a right. Certainly we can rise above this standard.

The pornographic elements and filming techniques of the video distract from our message of compassion, justice, and animal rights. You are right to say that people pay more attention to racier actions. However, that is the crux of the problem. The facts about animal agriculture and vegetarianism are drowned out by public chatter regarding women “having sex with broccoli.” People are talking about the racy elements of the ad and not the immorality of factory farming practices and the ill health effects of high meat consumption. Our mission, our message, and our efforts are washed away in the tide of public debate about whether women should be seen on TV having orgasms with vegetables.

Your ads are sexist, not because they portray women in that all too common framework of sexual lust and arousal. I find your ads sexist because only women are portrayed in this way. Where are the barely clad men? Why don’t we ever see young men mimicking sex with a pumpkin? Presenting only women in this way is sexist, common, and tiresome.

Ads like these belittle our image as animal rights activists. We, especially women who already live in a sexist world, are not portrayed as intelligent or strong persons in your ads. Instead, the public gaze sees a woman who has “better sex.” I am not against women choosing to do what they want with their bodies. I am, however, disappointed with PETA’s marketing strategy. When we appeal to the lowest common denominator by showing these racy ads, we lose legitimacy and risk making a mockery of the movement.

It occurred to me while watching the ad that PETA inadvertently gave the meat, egg and dairy industries a way out. That is to say, because the ad was pulled for its racy elements, these industries did not have to come up to the plate and protest the ad for fear that people will be disgusted by the scenes of animal cruelty. We, as animal liberators, want people to talk about the horrors of slaughterhouses, battery cages, and sow crates. Had the ad only shown scenes of animal cruelty, I believe the ensuing debate would have served our greater purpose. However, public discussion focused on those infamous racy scenes. I’m sure these industries were delighted to hear the public rant and rave about women and broccoli and not whether they are guilty of systematic animal abuse.

I was not offended by the content but would prefer to not have to remove my children from the room each time an age selective commercial is played. It had little affect on helping me to choose a vegan life style. I commend the efforts to save animals, but this is not going to get the job done.

I understand the creativity of the ad, and the reason why sexuality was used to demonstrate the appeal of veganism. With other commercials focusing on sex appeal, this was a likely correlation.

But, I think people would have seen this and have gone, huh? In which case, a lot of money is wasted on ad dollars by a good nonprofit.

I think, depending on the target audience, you do have to 'mainstream' your ads a bit. Shock value does not always resonate or achieve its intended goals.

It is more effective in getting your message across, to SOMETIMES go maintstream, and get people to undersatnd the true ideologies of PETA. I find this to be effective when explaining to people why I am a donor or member of PETA, why I am a vegetarian, only buy cruelty-free products and only go rescue . . .

and to you people who think peta should make an ad that doesn't get rejected... how ignorant can you BE? if you paid any attention to the world around you, you might realize that the media immensely controlls what we see on TV, magazines, etc. they broadcast things that are going to sell and make MONEY. all they would be doing by allowing an ad from peta to be shown nationally, would potentially be causing the meat industry to lose millions of dollars due to people converting to vegetarianism. and they wouldn't want that because somewhere along the line, someone is getting a paycheque from that company and if the company stops making money, the paycheque doesn't come.

and to those who argue that this video doesn't focus on the correct issue and that it should be geared more towards compassion for animals, c'mon, you and i both know that the only way to actually GET IT INTO SOMEONE'S HEAD about that would be to show footage of the animals actually having harm enflicted on them, and there really is no way of doing that without there being blood and gore, and the media wouldn't allow such a thing because it might "offend" some people and, yet again, people wouldn't want their children to see that kind of thing.

perhaps you people need to start thiking outside of the box. there are enough ads geared towards having more compassion for animals, YAWN, BORING, they OBVIOUSLY aren't nabbing people's attention because the problem still exists. perhaps if commercials such as these were actually ALLOWED then we would start to see a difference! and it's about reaching a different audience, right? superbowl jock's would rather see a hot woman rather than some little farm animal. use your heads and stop being part of the problem. the only reason why things like this ad aren't allowed is because of people with closed minds, people like all of you who think peta went about this in the wrong way. there are way worse things in the world that your 6 or 8 year old child is being subjected too than ads like this.

and maybe your little boy will want to eat his veggies more after seeing this movie.

face it. sex is everywhere. it's natural and healthy in most cases, and you shoudn't hide your child from it. it's the fact that people portray sex as such a shamefull taboo that makes kids more interested in it and want to do it more, at younger ages. i dare you to ask your 8 year old child to tell you everything he or she knows about sex. you will probably be shocked at their answer.

I love veggies and fruit alot BUT I hate to say I did not like the ad just another uncomfortable commercial to watch in front of your teenages everyone coughs and says well I gotta go to bathroom or how about that last sports game errr uuhhh. Oh and I am a hot 40 yr old to without hangups but really it is embarrassing to watch sorry maybe try something new instead of sexy that might be as refreshing as the veggies.

I am always perplexed that our society is comfortable with showing incredibly violent images on TV, but gets so uptight about sex. In any event, NBC objected to the ad because, among other concerns, a woman licked a pumpkin and rubbed asparagus on herself?! Are you kidding me? Setting aside general concerns about suggestive material on TV -- it is already on TV and having that debate now is pointless -- how is that any more suggestive than, for example, a KY Jelly commercial, or a godaddy.com commercial, or a Victoria's Secret commercial? It isn't, but those corporations will generate a lot more overall ad revenue for the networks than PETA. It is a transparent double standard motivated by economic considerations. Shame on NBC.

I really love what PETA stands for. But, this ad is a little much. Partially naked girls masturbating with veggies does not seem appropriate in any form. PETA should be above these kinds of ads. I thought they were better and should not lower themselves to the level of advertising that beer commercials do.

PETA what's more important to you, selling your ideals, which are admirable, or selling sex? It saddens me that the only "creative" ideas you could come up with to promote your ideals is a sex campaign. Add yourselves to the endless list of organization executives who promote the idea of flawless women-- perfect bodies, perfect faces--with only one thing on their minds, eating vegetables so they can be desired by men who can't think beyond their penis.

If you had invested the time and money into creating an Ad with class, something tasteful with information on the true beauty health benefits of a vegan lifestyle, maybe you could have earned the spot on NBC. This would have put you out there in the public arena selling your ideals and not the sex that completely overshadowed your message in your "rejected" add.

I submit that PETA knew the ad would be rejected and counted on the free publicity to drive traffic to their website (rather than paying $1 million or more for 30 seconds of air). Far more effective than a "tasteful" ad. In fact I'd say its Genius!

Wow. I find this advertisement to actually be quite disturbing. I get that PETA wants to try and grab people's attention, but there are many other ways to do so. I definitely believe that NBC was right in banning this. The only thing this ad seems to be selling is sex--why don't you actually try to intelligently shed light on your cause instead of exploiting women to try and gain support? I agree with PETA's ideas in relation to stopping mistreatment against animals, but I feel like in creating commercials like this you are just abusing one thing in order to stop the abuse of another. It doesn't make sense to me.
