We've decorated Washington's Pedicabs with this ad
Fur-free ad
Next week's historic presidential inauguration is being touted as the "greenest" of all time, so of course, we at PETA will be there in all our green glory!

Tomorrow, we'll already be on the streets of D.C. handing out fur coats to the homeless. Yep, you read that right. See, fur does nothing to raise a person's social status. On the contrary, only if you have nothing do you actually have any real excuse for wearing someone's cast-off fur. Next—to show our appreciation to all the fur-free folks attending the inaugural festivities in the cold—we'll be serving free hot soy cocoa in PETA cups printed with the message, "Thank you for not wearing fur."

D.C. fur coat giveaway
polar-bear-tongue.jpg
If you'll be in D.C., keep an eye out for PETA staffers and members dressed as foxes, raccoons, and rabbits and wearing pins that read, "Be Fur-Free."(Yes, they'll pose for photos.) If that isn't enough excitement for you, the peta2 "not-a-nugget" chick, "cows," and "pigs" will also be working the crowds with signs reading, "Yes We Can: Go Vegetarian!" They'll also be handing out copies of our free "Vegetarian Starter Kit." Even if you don't spot a PETA mascot, you'll probably catch a pedicab adorned with PETA's anti-fur ads.

As you know, fur is anything but green, folks. It's treated with chemicals (to keep it from decomposing, ewww), and the production of the ugly stuff pollutes rivers and streams with tannery runoff. It also takes 15 times the energy to produce a fur coat than it does to produce a faux-fur one. Then there's the business of ripping animals from their natural environment and killing them painfully. We're thinking that if Styrofoam isn't allowed, then fur certainly has no place at the inauguration.

So, here's to a truly green inaugural celebration.

Also, if you would like to donate your "change of heart" fur to us, click here. We'll make sure it is put to good use: We send donated furs to animal sanctuaries so that rescued animal orphans can be comforted by them. We also cut them up for refugee children in war zones and use them in educational displays.

Does a wool coat count as fur?
I got one this year (AS A GIFT), its an absolutely gorgeous peacoat (sorry) and, being otherwise coat-less, am wearing it for the winter. I don't exactly have money to replace it, and didn't have a gift receipt to return it either. But once I've gotton most of the use out of it, I would definately, gladly donate it (AND never support wool ever, ever again). PLUS I've told the gift giver not to buy me wool in the future.
Now if only I could make my mom get rid of those nasty Uggs...
Go PETA!

I witnessed a surprise mink coat donation last night for the purpose of tomorrow's give-away. It was inspiring!

I WOULD LOVE TO BE AT THE INAUGURATION! HERE IS A STORY I THINK YOU ALL WOULD LIKE. A FRIEND OF MINE WORKS AT THE BEVERLY CENTER IN BEVERLY HILLS. AT CHRISTMAS TIME HE SAID A LADY(FUR HAG) WAS WEARING A LONG FUR COAT. ANOTHER LADY PURCHASED AN EXTRA LARGE RED/BLUE ICEE AND POURED IT ALL OVER HER. THEN THE TWO HAD A KNOCK DOWN FIGHT. I WISH I COULD HAVE SEEN THAT! LOL. HEY, DID YOU GUYS SEE THE NEWS TODAY? VICTORIA BECKHAM IS DOING AD'S FOR ARMANI! SHE MUST NOT KNOW HE USES REAL FUR. MAYBE PETA COULD SEND HER A LETTER.

People should vote for the vegan lunch option. It is in 14th place right now and if it makes it to the top 10 then change.org will present the idea to Obama.

please vote

What do you use in your ads that looks like feathers? It looks so convincing! I pray that Obama will bring some much-needed positive change to Washington.

yay I likes Obama
I am happy he is making changes
i was afraid that sporthunting Palin might become president ewwugggl! (shudders)

I have personal experience against fur. My best friend is a red fox

to TINA: How do you vote for the vegan lunch option, i went to the site and i didnt say were to vote...unless its already over :(

Posted by: chelsy | January 16, 2009 02:28 PM

Chelsey, the vote ended yesterday. The vegan lunch option didn't make it to the top 10 but it was in 14th place and that speak volumes. OF all the issues we face today, vegan lunch option came in 14th place. More people know that veganism will solve a lot of our problems (global crisis, financial crisis, humanity etc). it is all linked. I hope someone inform Obama how many people support veganism.

BRAVO! Old fur coats shouldn't be just thrown away, since that would mean that the animals died for nothing. Let these sad remnants of cruel times do something good for the homeless and the deprived children!
Greetings from Croatia!

I'm shocked to learn that at the Inaugural luncheon President Obama will be served pheasant and duck, and a seafood stew with lobster, scallops, shrimp and cod (although the recipes do look delish). This is not the way he should start the administration. We should write to change.org and ask him not to go.

Posted by: Jon | January 18, 2009 10:06 AM

this is amazing! obama is awsome! we should make a thing where we vote for obama to try to become veggie!

much love.

Judging from footage of the inauguration on the news, a lot of Obama fans wear fur. It's really sad.

Posted by: Tahler | January 19, 2009 05:33 AM

Kudos to The Obamas for going fur free and animal friendly. Thank you and good luck. Maybe the Obama Administration will be followed by The Oprah Administration. =)

Saw lots of women wearing fur coats at the inauguration on the news. Give those fur hags hell PETA!

Posted by: em | January 20, 2009 09:05 AM

This is a very misleading title. Obama, as yet, has done absolutely nothing to help the welfare of animals (though, admittedly, he has bigger issues on his plate right now). I would have no opinion on his stance on animal welfare if it weren't for his completely bone-headed selection of Tom Vilsack as his agricultural secretary. Vilsack has a long history of condoning and proliferating everything that PETA is against. Notably, factory farming.

In that particular regard, Obama has not brought the "change." Let's hope his policies on the other issues do.

Im watching right now and getting sicker by the minute with all the people wearing fur. VOMIT- Im suprized beyonce wasnt wearing furry death on her back while she sang, queen fatty latifah wore fur. Bloddy crule vanity in the name of fashion! Dont they realize how stupid they look? Kinda like driving a hummer these days...dumb and pointless. LEAVE OUR ANIMALS ALONE! gosh

Posted by: kelly shanes | January 20, 2009 09:48 AM

Outrage to read in the Wall St. Journal today that PETA was bilked $5,500 by Madoff's many sub-organizations just so Peta can see OBAMA.
To get the publicity PETA want, there should be PETA folks demonstrating in front of Madoff super luxurious apt in NYC where he is luxuriating on the animals' hard-collected money. There are all kinds of paparazzis in front of that apt. building, PETA can definitely get noticed. Much more so than in the gigantic wasteful inauguration.

Posted by: Toni Kenyon | January 20, 2009 10:36 AM

Im also watching right now and am VERY dissapointed at the amount of disgusting FUR HAGS at the Inauguration. I started counting every fur coat/trim and had to stop when i reached over 100 (in less then 15mins) Im actually shocked. I just dont understand how they can spout off about all these needed changes our country needs and not include animals......Am i just being emotional? I also dont understand why the african american culture seems to think fur has an impact on their social status. Lets pray obama shows some intrest in the welfare of animals.

My friend wrote me and said Jill Biden was wearing a fur coat, and I flipped out. Thankfully at 11:31 a.m., I saw Jill Biden myself, and she was actually wearing a red coat...probably wool. Whew! When I wrote back to my friend and said she was wrong, she said, "Oops, I think it was CINDY McCAIN who was wearing the fur coat." CAN SOMEONE confirm? I've scoured Google looking for today's photos of McCain, and I can't find any.

Posted by: Deedee D. | January 20, 2009 01:02 PM

I hope the new age will be a success for humanity and therefore for animal rights.

CRUELTY WILL STOP

Posted by: JASMINE | January 20, 2009 02:25 PM

I am outraged that the new president, on which we pinned so much hope, allowed innocent canaries freeze to death. This oversite of ethical treatment of animals should cause all of us to rise up and denounce the thoughtlessness of this president.

Posted by: biggvil | January 20, 2009 03:03 PM

Cindy McCain has a load of furs. Anyone that wears fur looks rediculous. They always have. The torture these animals go through is not worth it. It makes you look terribly fat and they stink to mention a few. Everyone stares and frowns at people wearing fur.
Glad to see Aretha wasn't wearing fur today. The people in the audience in fur were nasty. YUCK poor animals

Posted by: Robin | January 20, 2009 06:57 PM

It was Hag McCain, not Jill Biden. But there were plenty of fur hags on both sides of the aisle. We'll have to get the word out about peace to ALL beings. ps. wool is bad too. : )

Posted by: Michelle | January 20, 2009 07:48 PM

Animal friendly? Obama's wife was wearing a dress and coat made out of wool. That definately isnt so animal friendly!

Posted by: Stephanie Fogel | January 21, 2009 08:40 AM

Did you all see the menu at the luncheon of the president?
They had seafood and pheasant and duck!!!!
I am outraged!!!!
I have ducks that live near me and just to think them being eaten makes me sick and want to cry.

Posted by: Greg Ross | January 21, 2009 12:03 PM

yes thank u obama is president and not palin ewww sshe hunts alot i was afraid she would make everyone hunt ... or osmething to hurt animals im so glad i hope obama makes testing illegal

Posted by: devlin | January 21, 2009 12:52 PM

I agree with the anti fur stance, although not giving the fur coats away to homeless people. Why not just give them ordinary clothes people don't want? Use the fur coats to stage protests by smearing them with fake blood and wearing them.
