Breeders Try to Save Their Own Skins

Following the BBC's decision to drop Crufts, the UK equivalent of the Westminster Dog Show, The Kennel Club in the UK has announced new breeding standards for 209 different breeds in an attempt to make the dogs healthier. For example, bulldogs will now be taller, leaner, and have smaller faces. But guess what? I think that I have a much more obvious solution:
Stop breeding dogs!
Mutts are usually far healthier than "purebreds," and millions of these angels are being euthanized every year because so many people search for the "perfect" bred dog. Breedism is sicker than the dogs it creates, and it is directly responsible for robbing shelter dogs of their chances to find happy homes!
The kennel clubs need to stop trying to sweep their abysmal code under the rug and drop the whole concept of breeding standards. Just pack 'em up and move 'em out already. The man who said, "[A] lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me," is being sworn in on January 20, and everyone needs to swear by mutts from now on.

Stop screwing up nature. Dogs don't need us to breed them. Leave them alone. It is all about corporate greed.

My friend owns an English bulldog, like the one in the pic, and he says they can't even be born vaginally! They have to c-section the puppies because the heads are so big. This is OUTRAGIOUS! Stop breeding dogs!

What about rescuing purebred dogs? on petfinder.org you can find millions of purebred dogs or even the exact mixes you want. I have my own rescue purebred, a Bullmastiff, that I got from the American Bullmastiff Association.

According to the most recent edition of the AKC Gazettte the AKC registered approximately 44,000 dogs in the month of November 2008. This is the most recent month they have numbers for. If that is a typical month then the AKC would be registering approxiamtely 550,000 dogs per year and all AKC show dogs would fall within that group since they have to registered. Per numbers provided by the ASPCA there are 3-4 million dogs a year euthanized in the USA (say this is 4 Million for now). There is no information regarding why the 3-4 million dogs are euthanized or what type of dogs they are. If every dog registered by the AKC resulted in one shelter dog death then that leaves approximetly 3.5 million dogs euthanized becuase somebody bred dogs (other than AKC registered dogs) that nobody was willing to care for. When we speak about animal over population its important to target the breeders of the dogs that are contributing to the problem. My local shelter is usually housing 75-90% dogs that are bred in our hispanic community. Animal ABC messages in Spanish might begin to educate that community.

My brothers idiot girlfriend decided to breed her AKC purebred with "papers" Maltese and the birth almost killed her! The puppies had to be pulled out with a C-Section and only one survived. That's how mutated and unhealthy these dogs are. How terrible that humans are causing such suffering by screwing with nature. She would have bred her dog again had it not been for the almost lethal birth!

I am never too sure exactly what the next complaint against breeders will be here. I should think ethical treatment of animals would include emergency care when needed. However, even C-sections for dogs is blasted here as 'proof' about how bad pure bred dogs and breeders are. What would you have, a dog die a painful death in labor? I am not a fan of bad dogs or bad breeders, but really, focus on some real issues, like dogs left in cages and repeat bred their entire lives, then replaced with another dog when they cannot breed. That is an issue. That pugs or bull dogs have big heads and cannot give birth, is a problem, but not an issue to trash the entire dog community over. For christs sakes if the public would educate themselves just a wee bit before getting any dog they could avoid buying from a mill by meeting the breeder, avoid buying an in-bred dogs by looking at the pedigree, avoid buying a dog with a high risk for genetic disorders by looking at the parents health certificates, and asking the breeder if the dog was welped naturally or by c-section. As long as the public buys crappy dogs from crappy breeders the breeders will keep doing it. If the public bought dogs with decent breeding or adopted one of the millions of unhomed dogs at the shelter the breeders would go broke. It's about the same as buying fast food versus buying real food.

my chihuahuas have patella luxation, a thyroid condition and a defromed trachea. Spoke to the brdeder Kirk Newton of Tiny Town Texas and he admits puppies from that dam do have the trick knee. Sorry, he says, but i can give you 2 more puppies. This man runs a puppy mill in Edgewater, Texas. Just want him reported that's all.
