Bill Cosby
OK. So I really love The Cosby Show. The deadpan humor, family melodrama, and Bill Cosby's tacky sweaters—how could you not? So when I found out that Bill Cosby will be performing at KFC's upcoming annual Convention Gala, I was heartbroken.

PETA reached out to Bill and let him know that more than 1 billion chickens are raised and slaughtered every year for KFC restaurants. They are drugged and bred to grow so large that many become crippled, and many have their throats cut while they are still conscious. In our undercover investigation of a KFC "Supplier of the Year" slaughterhouse in West Virginia, we documented that workers were ripping off live birds' heads, spitting tobacco into their eyes, spray-painting their faces, and violently stomping on them.

After learning about the cruelty endured by chickens on KFC's factory farms, Bill's rep contacted us and let us know that Bill understands our concerns, but that "unfortunately, it's too late for him to cancel his appearance at the gala" because of his contract. Perhaps after his performance, he'll pass the information we gave him on to KFC executives. Maybe they'll listen to what he has to say!

And if they don't? Well, KFC, now that Bill knows about what goes on at your factory farms, let's just say that I wouldn't expect him at your next gala—unless you improve your slaughter methods to make them more humane for the billion chickens you kill every single year. And after what I'm sure will be a brilliant performance at this year's event, you're really going to be missing out.

so full of it, too late to cancel? Bill should be ashamed of himself.

Posted by: roxanne | January 8, 2009 01:56 PM

If he were really concerned about the info peta submited to him he would have cancelled the performance...or he,d use the opportunity to do a peformance at the KFC convention about the way chickens are raised and abused in their factory farms ( which I doubt he'll have the courage to do).

Why don't KFC worldwide adopt the more humane method that KFC Canada is now using?

I don't believe Bill. If I were him I'd cancel ASAP! And tell the world what's really going on. I wish everyone could understand what's going on in slaughter houses! Sadly too many humans are ignorant!

Bill Cosby has made his choice. I guess the money is more important than standing firm against animal abuse. I wonder how he sleeps at night.

it's never too late to cancel, i hate kfc . eating pain and suffering is not for anybody.
Shame on them!

Posted by: caroline | January 8, 2009 07:37 PM

there's not alot to say. Cosby the man and myth are one and the same, a little light in the ethics department. A man with a conscience and a soul would cancel immediately, then research veganism and cruelty free options, instead of playing the game.

If I was told what happens to all those innocent chickens and was really upset about it, {contract or not} I would cancel.

Posted by: Tammy | January 9, 2009 07:03 AM

If he cancels it would really be a huge boost for the anti torture campaign at KFC. He obviously doesn´t care one bit about the terrible suffering of these birds!

I loved Bill Cosby, but let me be honest. If I was in his situation, it would have turned out differently. Hopefully next time he will put up more of a fight..

Can't believe him. Proves how Hollywood corrupts ppl. I guess the $$$ from that damn gala is more important than the billions of chickens being tortured year after year.

Listen I know you guys are passionete but just remember that when you sign a contract and break it , thats called (breach of contract). Lets not become racilaized and selfrightous and judgemental in our cause because it turns people away. I'm interested and gathering more allies for PETA. That will not happen if we come accross as radical. Remember why the Civil Rights movement was successful!!

Posted by: mylo | January 10, 2009 07:51 AM

come on bill cosby won't stop going to these things, if he was so "passionate" about it then he would've cancelled anyways. i lke him, he's a funny guy and i loved the cosby show but if he lies then that is just sad.

Whenever I tell people about the horrors of all this crap people do to animals, I always get the same response. "I don't want to know." Well buddy, you do. People want to keep on eating their disgusting chicken corpse buckets, and they lose sight of the animals invoilved.
I don't know how to reach the "I don't want to know crowd," but we need to.

Posted by: Noelle | January 11, 2009 07:37 AM

So disgusting! Shame on him!!! He's no role model that's for sure. Obviously he doesn't give a shit otherwise he would take a stand and refuse KFC. This is a time where he can really make a difference... Money speaks louder then suffering to him!

Honestly, for a comedy legend like Bill Cosby to perform at KFC... I wonder if he's going through some financial trouble to accept performing at that greasy joint.

"Listen I know you guys are (passionate) but just remember that when you sign a contract and break it , thats called (breach of contract)."

BFD. And of course the emo card is incourageously and/or magically played, but to no avail. That's a beyond flimsy excuse and you know it. and like oh so many others cosby is just a crass, soulless and resolute sell-out, all the fame and fortune in the world doesn't make him a better person or a more informed person than anyone else on this planet. Either you have morals and convictions or you don't. Either you are conscious and aware of the unthinkable suffering and brutality that occurs day in day out on factory farms and slaughterhouses or you aren't. Either you are able to rise above the glam and glitz or you aren't. Either you live a compassionate life and make ethical choices or you don't. Either you are secure in your beliefs and convictions or you are not. Either you are able to take a stand against thoughtless cruelty and synthetic greed or you can't. There just is no middle ground.

Posted by: vegancoin | January 12, 2009 01:52 PM

I don't know anything about contract law, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were escape clauses in cases of ethical conflicts. If he really cared, he'd examine his rights and take a stand.

Grow a pair, Cosby.

Posted by: lynda downie | January 12, 2009 11:39 PM

Oh well, good luck to him. If it was me, I wouldn't cancel either - there's the contract thing mentioned above, and also there's a chunk of money to be made. I might throw in a few jokes about it though. Maybe he donated his check to a good cause. There's no way you can know that he didn't! Then again, it could be that chicken torture just isn't that big a deal to him. It isn't to most people. I'm sure Bill Cosby is more concerned about equalizing opportunity for humans, or improving the state of education perhaps.

I complained on KFC website about the way the animals they use for food are treated and they sent me an already prefabricated statement about PETAs fanatic claims being false and how concerned they are about animal welfare. They were even as rude as to send me the link of the premade statement i was give... I don't care if PETAs claims are false or not, 1 thing is clear i have seen videos of the chicken suffer and i dont see any videos posted by KFC of the chickens being happy... Fact is fellas in America serial killers recieve modern eutanasia and better death and treatment than these animals which feed millions of families.

"Fact is fellas in America serial killers receive modern euthanasia and better death and treament than these animals which feed millions of families."

Very well said, Yavor.

That's funny. Bill Cosby cancelled an appearance in Cleveland, Ohio a while back. He didn't seem to have a problem then.

Posted by: Barb | January 20, 2009 08:02 AM

How horrible!! its awful

Posted by: sophie | February 1, 2009 02:43 PM

Wow... I love Bill Cosby, but I think he should have done something better. Though he was on a contract, he could have said he was sick or something!!!
Those poor chickens!!!

Posted by: Sasha | February 22, 2009 06:56 PM

I wanna know, now that KFC is doing commercials showing TYSON trucks in the background. Are they done with their own cruel slaughterhouses or is Tyson Foods responsible for New Cruelty to the Chickens?

Posted by: Jim | February 25, 2009 03:23 PM

I feel if they could gently put the chickens to sleep so they feel no pain that would be the right thing to do. I think Bill should cancel and refuse to do the show! Maybe no will come to see it. Protest against KFC!

Posted by: Lou Burns | March 1, 2009 01:37 PM

Bill Cosby is just lame. It's not the contract. It's the money, folks. It's obvious he doesn't care about animal abuse. What a shame!!!
