This means that those awful pet stores won't be allowed to sell cats or dogs anymore, and breeders who try to make a profit off kittens and puppies won't have it so easy either. It's just too bad that Joe Biden didn't get the memo …
The new bill cuts the license fee in half for a spayed or neutered animal companion and bans the chaining of backyard dogs! But wait, there's more! Not only do the good people of Bernalillo County care about companion animals, but the legislation states that animals on farms must be given food, water, veterinary care, and shelter. Seems pretty basic, but now it's the law.
Possibly the coolest thing about this legislation is the fact that the changes were made because of regular people. Commission Chairman Alan Armijo said, "We've had tons and tons of input. The commissioners have tried to accommodate the different points of view," and an audience of about two dozen people cheered the amendment's passage. Know what that means? Anyone can do it! Seriously. You can contact your legislator right now and make a real difference in the lives of animals all over your district!
Well, what're you waiting for? Visit HelpingAnimals.com for more info. The animals (and PETA) thank you!

Good for them! I'm going to write a letter right now to get this done in my county.

ME TOO! I think that riding an elephant should be against the law, too! Those poor elephants are beaten and tortured and then they have little kids ride on them at the circus! That is pretty scarely for those kids and for the elephants who should be SET FREE!PETA could you write a law to stop elephants from being used in the circus? Until then,I'll write my e-mails to my county. And a BIG THANK YOU to the state of New Mexico!

I'm from albuquerque and that's terrific news for me...one state at a time and hopefully soon the whole world can agree to save and respect animals more...=)

nice! too bad these normal rquirements for our fellow beings have taken so long to be made law, for people ignorant enough to have failed to observe such obvious needs.
now maybe other states will follow new mexico's good example.

Dear Bernalillo County,
We love you!!! I now live in Syracuse, NY, but I got my BA and MA at UNM. I can't tell you how thrilled I am to hear that Bernalillo County is such a great place for animals and that its good citizens are doing so much to end animal suffering and abuse.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Feliz Navidad,
Sandy Porter, UNM alum

Wow! That makes me want to move to New Mexico. I like kindness. I like people who are kind to animals. It must be a very beautiful place. Something very beautiful is taking place there.
What a wonderful world this could be if we would all operate in kindness and understood that our dominion over animals is to be kind.

Ok this is a great step, and we need it in the other counties and states, too.
But I'm wondering what about bunnies from bunny mills, and others, though? just no cats or dogs? Like in a few months when Easter comes around and they start churning out the rabbits at the pet stores there?

Bravo New Mexico. Will PETA be writing a "mock" letter that discusses this issue? I'd love to bring this to my state representatives but don't feel that I know enough about the issue to write a compelling argument. If I knew where to begin, I'm sure I could put something down. Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated.
