Those boots may be made for walkin', but were they made from an animal's sensitive skin? That may be the big question in the minds of travelers shuffling through the Memphis International Airport in the coming months.

In lieu of the nation's financial crunch, the Transportation Security Administration has decided to allow advertising on the shoe/belt/bag bins at security checkpoints in order to bring in extra revenue. Well, you can bet we're already all over this one!

In PETA's letter to the CEO of Memphis International Airport, we are requesting the right to advertise an anti-leather ad (shown below) on the shoe bins. The ad features the photograph of a "missing" calf named Charlie, who was pulled away from his mother, most likely branded without any pain relief, and eventually slaughtered for his meat. And his skin was made into someone's shoes, belt, or jacket—the very same items that get tossed into the bins at security checkpoints.

Charlie

Airport advertising has the potential to reach gazillions of people, and by placing our ad in such a highly visible location we can help high-flyers get the message that leather kills—and make them think twice about their next purchases. Gorgeous, durable, cruelty-free shoes await their feet. Besides, the production of leather is catastrophic to the environment; planting a carbon offset tree for flight miles won't cover that!

Great ad! People should not be shielded from the harsh reality of leather production, or allowed to pretend it's a victimless product.

I really like that ad, I hope they will use it.

Well, I know they won't post it...but it's a good idea anyway.

wow.. this will really make people think twice.. as in calf leather.. the softer leather version.. the same also goes for all new born calves torn away from their mothers after a few days in order to be shipped off to be turned into 'veal' or promptly shot as an 'unwanted product'.. I don't want to be hypocritical.. but the most regrettable thing of all here.. is that practically all people (excluding vegans) drink cows' milk practically on a day to day basis.. (how do you get people to stop drinking milk)?.. (including myself).. but for people to be made more aware of where their leather handbags or shoes comes from is certainly a good idea and point to make .. even if it is just to get them to think or be more aware of animal 'products'.. or the proliferation of so many products derived from the use of animals..

This is a very good ad- definitely thought provoking. Let's hope that the Memphis International Airport has the courage to let you post it and not give in to other cruelty based commercial interests instead.

This is a brilliant advert, i would like to see more of these everywhere. We need human animals to see these adverts of cruelty to other animals to get the message accross. It is mainly down to ignorance and we can change many people if we put it out there.

What a great idea. You will reach so many people through this medium and the ad is evocative and eyecatching.

Stunning ad! Who can look at those beautiful, terrified eyes and not be moved?
