PETA Liberates Mice and Rats at Taiwan Universities!

Part of the first experiment called for students to pump the chemical strychnine into the stomachs of approximately 150 mice through surgically-attached stomach tubes. That's right, strychnine—and then the students were required to observe and record the animals' convulsions. The second experiment required the students to inject pentylenetetrazol, a convulsion-causing chemical, into approximately 135 mice. The students then had to inject acetic acid into the animals, which caused their bodies to contort painfully.
Now, both experiments have been canceled—and nearly 300 mice will be spared these terrible procedures every semester. The university will still conduct experiments on animals—including one cruel blood-pressure manipulation experiment in which students slice open animals' windpipes and blood vessels—but the university has also agreed to dramatically reduce the number of rats who are used in that experiment—to just one.
These victories come after PETA successfully convinced National Taiwan University College of Medicine to end similar experiments on animals earlier this year.
This is a great start for National Yang-Ming University and National Taiwan University College of Medicine, where school officials are beginning to realize that animal experimentation is not just unnecessary—it's inaccurate and completely inhumane.

3 words... "Just Plain Torture"!!! Pumping strychnine into ones tiny body is dead wrong but into 150, come on thats just plain nuts!!! Talk about abuse of ones power, it's no wonder they conceled it altogether that quickly cause they knew it was crazy!!! Strychnine WILL kill you!! How many more "tests" are going on like this one that are falling under the radar?? Why don't they pick-up the phone and call each other "No you don't have to do that one, we already did and they shake" DUH!!! Down with ALL animal testing... Shame on you people!!!

It's tragic that this was even happening. The effects of those chemicals, on humans and animals, are very well documented. It should never have been considered, although no doubt similar experiments are approved every day.

As a "rat mom" to two rescued lab rats, reading about these experiments horrifies me. More people need to realize rats & mice have feelings and deserve to live in peace. Great work, Peta, for saving these innocent animals! Until every cage is empty...

This is great news for mice and Rats. I actually have had Rats as pets for 15 years now. They truly are spectacular,loving, affectionate and intelligent beings that do not deserve to be treated in any cruel way like these experiments. Thanks to you Peta many of these innocent little angels lives will be spared. This is wonderful news, and I'm very relieved to here it.

Fantastic job, PETA! The only question I have:
Given the fact that lab tests involving animals are costly and ineffective, and that more accurate and cost effective alternatives exist, why aren't laboratories the world over doing away with animal tests?

Thank you Peta for doing this!
As long as animals are being used for tests and research,humans will continue to suffer needlessly.These tests do not help one single human being.
To all of those who stubbornly continue to do animal related research and tests-you continue because of financial interests and nothing else-not to help another human being-these tests/research should be banned!
Both animals and humans continue to suffer needlessly.

Actually the National Taiwan University (NTU) is performing many other cruel mice lab experiment in their Vet department. A student there told me that they have to stick a syringe into a mouse eye socket live without anaesthesia while the mouse is still alive. This is a very painful and cruel procedure. Their reason being it is too expensive to sedate them.
Taiwan treat dogs/cats like garbage, the whole country is infested with sick and abused strays, do you think they will treat mice nicely. They are no different from those barbaric mainland Chinese who eat cats and dogs.

Saving rats and mice.
This is one of the greatest causes I can imagine and also one of the most difficult. A lot of attention is paid to animal rights but it is easy to overlook these incredible animals. I would do anything to rescue them and I am overjoyed that PETA is taking a stand.
