A.K.
So Rony Salman, this oh-so-classy Canadian burglar, is in jail right now for, well, robbery and has recently learned the true meaning of "an eye for an eye," or in this case I guess it'd be an ear for an ear

Along with his spotty burglary past, he's also previously pleaded guilty to three counts of cruelty to animals (willfully causing pain to an animal, causing unnecessary pain to a dog by not seeking veterinary attention, and failure to provide care for—and willful neglect of—a domestic animal.). One of the animals who unfortunately ended up in this man's care was a smiley, sweet-looking pup named A.K. Well, in spring of 2007, Rony cut off A.K.'s ears. (Luckily, the dog has since been adopted by a new, and hopefully much kinder, family.)

Now, that's just hideous, and it really gets under my skin when I hear about stories like this, but there's a bit of a twist to this story. While Rony was in jail, another inmate chewed off part of Rony's ear.

I know, right?! Coincidence? Hmm …

University of Toronto criminology teacher Scott Wortley said, "There's a code of honour among criminals, and they rank people who prey on children, who prey on women, who prey on the defenseless—and maybe a dog, I don't know—as worse."

Well, I certainly agree with that! But unfortunately, the AKC doesn't. Sadly, ear-cropping and tail-docking are extremely common among certain breeds of animals. When you see dogs that have stubs for tails and short, pointy ears … they ain't born that way. Breeders, the AKC, and all those crazy dog-show folks purposely cut off the tails and ears of animals all the time—purely for vanity—and nobody says a dang thing about it.

Maybe they should spend some time up in this Canadian jail with a certain inmate … I would imagine they'd change their minds pretty quickly.

Call it an eye for an eye, Divine providence or whatever, but I call this justice at its best. And that ear-biting prisoner has my respect.

hmm. 'what goes around comes around' huh? I really shouldnt' be so horrid.. but actually having his own ear bit off. .(pity it wasn't both of them).. well it was most deserved.. after the brainless senseless cruel act he did to the poor dog/puppy..
I hope the puppy has a new better life with much more caring and loving owners.. he deserves it.. the other one.. well .. maybe he's cottoned on by now. it's not very nice to have part of your ear missing.. he should have known that before he did the senseless act and the other cruel acts he did to the dog or other animals ..

This happened in Windsor Ontario and there was a HUGE upset over this case (AK being harmed, not his stupid owner getting hurt)and that eventually there is a law now that is an animal welfare law called "AK's Law" that is to stiffen the penalties on these bastards. While I don't condone violence of any kind, I do not feel bad for anyone that could do that to a dog...as for me we just adopted another dog today from the Humane Society..we get him on Monday!!!

Posted by: Courtney | November 21, 2008 06:19 PM

This is great to hear! I hope this monster remembers what he did to that innocent dog every time he looks at his evil face in the mirror. I really hope that dog gets a loving, forever family.

"Breeders, the AKC, and all those crazy dog-show folks purposely cut off the tails and ears of animals all the time—purely for vanity—and nobody says a dang thing about it." Actually alot is said alout it. It's banned in part of Europe.

All is everybody...your statement applies to the breeds/people that continue to be docked and cropped, not all. There are many dog show people who have dogs with natural tails and ears.

It is now acceptable to show any breed in the US and Europe with natural ears and tails.

Vanity is not the only reason the tails have been docked. If you have ever had a dog with a badly torn ear you would know it is almost impossible to heal. the vets are forced to trim the ear back to unijuried place and cuaterize the edge. It is not a very nice thing for the dog.

Any cropping or docking should be done by vet. If somebody does it themselves, like Rony, then the animal is going to be in great pain.

My big dog came in from running in a field with a paralyzed tail. The vet said this was common in hunting dogs and cuased by a contusion to the tail while he was running. It was not permanent, but sometimes it is. Then the tail is docked on the adult dog, which is very painful and takes alot of time to heal. If they don't dock the injuried tail then when the dog poops he makes a mess on his rear which cuases more problems.

I know the whole pure bred dog issue is pointless to argue here, but still there is more to things than people being vain.

Many of the champion show dogs you see at shows go home and have working lives too. They herd, guard, point, retrieve, track, etc. Thier looks in the ring should be consitant with the work they perform.

I will always fail to understand excessive cruelty...
Especially to animals.
I'm a vegan and I own two wonderful dogs and I will never understand why people do this though.
BUT I don't believe he should have had his ear chewed off since two wrongs do not make a right, no matter how you look at it.

Posted by: Brendon | November 21, 2008 08:40 PM

yes the ear-biting prisoner has my respect as well. I

Posted by: roxanne | November 21, 2008 09:34 PM

ok just quickly.. tail cropping isnt that bad. it is done while the dog is a puppy, usually dont even have their eyes open most of the time, and is it just a quick clip that causes pain for only a few quick moments, like getting your ears pierced. it heals quickly and doesnt effect the dog later in life. (i had a cocker spaniel that was the best dog ever)

we circumcise babies.. why cant we tail crop our puppies??

What a piece of work Rony Salman is! I'm sure he'd love to tell his side of the story if he can find someone who would lend him an ear....

I can remember when my moms friend bred Great Dane pups and I had to drive 8 hrs in the car to Elgin, Illinois to have 8 Great Dane puppies ears cropped. That was fun. But when I saw their ears they were red, swollen and had stitches in them. I felt so bad for the pups and they actually look a lot better with floppy ears. I had a harlequin that had floppy ears and one blue eye. I miss her.

Posted by: Denise | November 22, 2008 12:43 AM

I mangled my ear in a Bike accident a couple of years ago that took several hundred stitches to repair. It really didn't hurt at all though. But the pointy ears look kinda stupid as do the bob tails.

That piece of crap got what he deserved!

Posted by: Tom | November 22, 2008 06:51 AM

Yay!!

i am not a vegetarian but i have to say that cropping a poor puppy's ears and docking their tails must be akin to the footbinding that used to be practiced in asia. how could someone do that to those poor animals?

Posted by: rhiannon | November 22, 2008 02:31 PM

Thor... Long tail Doberman cross!! I love YOU to pieces!!! Whom I must say... is on a Veg diet (Fifteen) with Soooo much love to give me and my small family!!! Recues ARE the BEST!!!! Long LIVE RecueS!!!!!

Posted by: Rain Mashlan | November 22, 2008 03:59 PM

Hmm, that's interesting. I am happy that the poor dog is ok and with a hopefully good family. Maybe you should send animal abusers up here to Canada, what would happen to guys like Micheal Vick?

Posted by: Aneliese | November 22, 2008 04:49 PM

So what can we do to get people to stop cropping their dogs ears and tails? Where do we start?

Posted by: Janis Bates | November 22, 2008 05:52 PM

haha thats funny..karma

I really hate people who take their anger out on helpless animals! Someone can be killed for killing a human, why shouldn't they be killed? I know I sound crazy (and I probably am) but think about it!

Posted by: Christopher Gillett | November 22, 2008 06:33 PM

Serves him right. I hope his ear was very delicious.

Posted by: Charles | November 22, 2008 06:42 PM

I hope the person who shot a deer, and left it to die in our neighbors yard by the road gets his payback.

Yesterday my husband and I were admiring two beautiful deer eating the brush in our backyard. Just before dark we heard a gunshot very near the house. This morning we saw the deer. Someone had shot it passing by in car, and left it to die on our neighbor's lawn. The neighbor is gone for the winter.

We are vegetarians and we hate hunters, but this was worse than a hunter--this was just a mean person who thought it would be cool to kill this animal because it was there and because they had a gun.

If we had laws that worked we would not have so much animal cruelty. look at Mike Vick. He should be put away for life, and they are already talking about him playing football when he gets out.

Posted by: Maggy | November 22, 2008 08:34 PM

This is awesome! about what happened to that monster that hurt that dog, I mean! I never thought I'd live to see the day when I said this! "GO prisoner!

Posted by: Hayley | November 23, 2008 12:29 AM

Dear PETA-
I understand that animals need to be well traited. Why you do not stop lining winter coats made with ducks and goose from chinese farms?
I saw a girl yesterday that was mocking for the fur that a poor student had recycled, but she did not notice that her nice SPRIT plastic coat had acuatic bird material inside. This material is from farms.

Actually, people ask me if my dog's tail and ears have been cropped all the time because he has pointy ears and a stub tail, but he's a French Bulldog and was just born that way. So, really not ALL dogs who look like that are a result of cropping. (I don't agree with cropping either!)

Posted by: Saeran | November 23, 2008 08:21 AM

Animals have sensations.. you have it too..
Would you like to suffer like this animals??
Is is fair?
Just let them live.

Posted by: Cláudia Gonçalves | November 23, 2008 08:30 AM

I think it is horrible that animals have to go through this stuff and no one helps them! They can't run or scream for help they just lay there in misery hoping for a call that will probably never happen! If you really care tell people to fight for what is right. I will never give up trying to save them they are human just like us they are just a lil different!

I have a correction to make- Pembroke Welsh Corgis are usually born tailless.

I'm 53 years old and for the first time ever I just forced myself to watch Earthling, on youtube. There are no more animal products in my home. By the end of this week there wil be no leather products either. I never knew, I never knew, I never knew! Im going to have a salad now, and for the rest of my life. No animal will EVER give its life for me. When will people learn?

Posted by: Joseph L Mullinax | November 23, 2008 09:43 PM

I was absolutely horrified to hear teh CNN LIVe 11 oclock
reporters refer to the exploitation of monkeysas "CUTE" as they are being forced to serve food to humans
in a restuarant so that the owner can save money by not hiring humans. Thjey are further humilitaed by having to wear human clothing and beg for tibits of food from customers. Thier discomfort
from having to stand in an upright position is anly secon to the hunger they endure to be trained to work.

PLEASE WRITE COMMENTS TO CNN an ask that they not encougage
further continued mistreayment of animals especially since many countries have no laws in place for the expliotation of animals. One of these monkeys was 12 years old.

i agree with the first comment!! go ear-biter!

Posted by: PW | November 24, 2008 08:24 AM

I thought some dogs were born with stubby tails. Hmmf, you learn something new every day. I didn't know that owners did this to their dogs. It seems kinda dumb. How does having a stumpy tail look better than a normal, long one? I don't get it.

Well, yeah, this story is a good example of "an eye for an eye". Maybe he has learned his lesson. We could only hope.

Hopefully the pup is living a better life elsewhere with people who love and care about him.

Posted by: bbr | November 24, 2008 11:02 AM

you know I actually think Grt Danes and Schnauzers look far better with their full floppy ears.. they look far more endearing and another thing.. ears cropped so.. exposes the inner/outer part of ear therefore they are far more susceptible to dirt and infection.. so it's not a v. practical thing to do is it?.. and like I said aesthetically.. doesnt' look better either.. in addition I believe in UK or Europe EU it was outlawed not too long along not to crop dogs ears or dock their tails.. I have a schnauzer with 'full ears' but a docked tail.. as long as it wasn't too painful for him as a pup to have his tail docked I'm not to fussed if his tail was docked or not.. but I don't think ears should be cropped..for any breed..

Posted by: yvonne | November 24, 2008 02:03 PM

If breeder's think it's ok to crop tails and remove ears, then why don't they have thier own ears cropped and their tails removed? Anyone who is cruel to any animal, in any way should be punished as if the crime were being done to a human. I hope Michael Vick rots in jail. Take a look at what goes on with chickens, turkeys, cattle, pigs and other forms of livestock in the slaughterhouses. Karma.

Posted by: Killroy | November 24, 2008 09:59 PM

Oh my God. I thought some breeds just had naturally short tails/ears! Does this mean that ALL of them had them cut off?

Posted by: Pete | November 25, 2008 06:07 AM

I just wanted to say that some dogs like German shepards and Boston terriers have ears that do stand up on their own!The ears have cartiledge that will eventually harden and stand up on their own. I have a Boston and people comment on his ears being cropped and i would never do such a thing!! His Tail is also a little stump and he was born like that! it is completely pointless to crop a dogs ears and tail it serves no purpose its just plain old pointless and old fashioned. Leave the poor puppies tails where they are to do their jobs and wag!!!!

Posted by: Bambi | November 25, 2008 11:39 AM

The photo of AK is so pathetic & sad. I'm ashamed of the human race when I see this sick abuse. Someone should just kill in prison next time & we'd be rid of another piece of infectious human waste.

Posted by: Mia | November 25, 2008 02:20 PM

Hey erica, how do YOU know it "only hurts a few moments"? It's happening to the puppy, not to you. What if somebody cut off one of your fingers, saying, oh, this'll only hurt a few moments? Well?

Posted by: Amber Horne | November 25, 2008 04:51 PM

Just what I was about to post Amber!

I mean...Who the hell do we think we are to hurt an innocent puppy "just for a few moments"

It´s not necessary, It´s just that people are so obsessed with how certain breeds are supposed to look like!

Posted by: cynthia | November 25, 2008 07:50 PM

Can the U.S. Justice system adopt this type of payback/sentence...."In God We Trust" our government proclaims, well then, carry out "Eye for an Eye"!!!!

Posted by: Ana | November 26, 2008 10:29 AM

erica,

I find it oddly fitting that you compare two forms of forced mutilation - cropping dogs' tails and circumcision - neither of which have any medical benefit (please don't try and spout off about STD's and cancer...I know more about this than you) but are done solely for the sake of "appearance."

I am glad the coastal US is catching up with the rest of the world on the issue of circumcision and can only hope that this type of enlightenment spreads to the central US as well.

I also hope that the barbaric practices of animal mutilation for the sake of an ideal look one day becomes obsolete as well.

Posted by: Derek, MD | November 26, 2008 10:52 AM

It doesn't stop with dogs. Remember that it was once stylish to bob horses' tails? The poor things need their tails to swat horse flies and other pests. For those of you who have never been bitten by a horse fly, it hurts like hell. Imagine you are a horse, in the hot summertime, being hot and sweaty and covered with biting insects...and there's nothing you can do about it. I'm not sure when this practice was popular...maybe someone else out there knows? but it was in horse-and-buggy days, for sure. You would think we would have risen above that mentality by now. Anybody that would mutilate their critters just because they don't like the looks they were born with is a low-down dirt bag who should not get a furry friend if they can't love and appreciate them for exactly who they are.

As a Canadian and a Canadian who is an active participant in the fight for animal rights I encourage everyone to do a little research on Canadian animal right animal welfare laws mainly in the province of Ontario and see the lack of legislation and public education. For anyone who wishes to help me in my fight please email me at jodi@jodicohengroup.com
