Change was a hot topic this election, but we all need to remember the millions of animals whose lives will stay the same even though the election is over—unless we all do a lot of hard work. Breeders and pet shops will continue to contribute to the tragedy of dog and cat overpopulation—just to make a profit. We need to work hard to make spaying and neutering affordable and legally mandated in every community across the country. Although the election is over, let's remember to keep fighting the good fight! We must educate others about the importance of spaying and neutering their animal companions and adopting from shelters instead of buying from breeders and pet stores. If we all pitch in, then eventually the tragic but merciful euthanasia of animals for whom no suitable, loving homes exist will no longer be necessary.

If people would just take responsibility for there cats and dogs this wouldn't be a problem.
And people don't realize this goes so much deeper then just overcrowding in pounds. There's a state forest in the town next to mine and people would bring their pets there and abandon them if they didn't want them anymore. The dogs became vicious in the wild and now there's a huge problem of dog attacks around there. A mother was actually walking her baby in a stroller and was chased by a dog until someone came out of their house and helped her. People have to learn there are consequences to their actions.
Every time I see an abandoned animal carrier in the woods I wish I could have been there a little bit earlier. I would have helped those animals : (

OH, don't make me cry!! I just went to an animal shelter and donated $10. That was all I had, all I could do. I wish I could win the Lottery,I would have taken them all home! And then provided free birth control for all dogs and cats in the U.S.A. Until then, I will stay a PETA MENBER FOR LIFE!!

I wish to respond to the assertion that " We need to work hard to make spaying and neutering affordable and legally mandated in every community across the country." Before all of us are forced to spay/neuter, why not instill personal accountability for the prospective pet 'owner' first? For example, a legal contract at point of sale or adoption containing the necessary elements to help maximize ethical care and treatment as well as to include penalty for breaking that contract. This way, more people would consider what they are committing to in taking that animal into their care. I believe PEOPLE must bear the responsibility but animals should not suffer the consequences. Lastly, may I point out that it might be constructive to define expectation of responsibility {like whether to spay or neuter} as well. Will having a pet cat on a rural farm in Kansas the same as one in densely populated NYC? If you say "yes" then are the probable outcomes for those two cats the same?
