Zappos.com
We at PETA have long loved Zappos.com for its amazing selection of leather-free shoes. In fact, we recently ranked Zappos.com the number one best vegan shoe retailer. So needless to say, when we found out that Zappos.com was selling lots of fur products, we were none too pleased.

Back in August, we wrote to the company about this, urging it to adopt a fur-free policy. At the time, the company said that it would look into the issue to gauge people's thoughts on it. So, to help speed that process up, we launched an online marketing campaign, getting members of the public to write to Zappos.com's CEO and urge him to send the pelts packing—and more than 11,000 of you did! The campaign became totally viral and social networking played a huge part—many people posted tweets on Twitter, passed around our petition on Facebook, and much more.

I mean, seriously, is this the first campaign in history ever to be won by tweeting and the slick use of other online tools? It's pretty exciting if you ask me—and also pretty novel! We are paving the way of the future, my friends.

Well, it seems that Zappos.com got the message that people hate fur, because yesterday, the company officially adopted a permanent policy never to sell any products containing the fur of an animal!

Thank you SO much, all you fantastic online activists, for helping—and thank you, Zappos.com, for making the kind decision to forgo fur now and in the future. This will help spare countless minks, rabbits, foxes, and other animals all the horrors of fur farming and trapping, such as being electrocuted, bludgeoned, and skinned alive.

Now that we're all rightfully pumped up about this exciting victory, we've decided to take on a new campaign—because, well, we can't be stopped! Please join us in asking Amazon.com to follow Zappos.com's lead and go fur-free. For those who want to learn more about the issue and find other ways to help, please visit FurIsDead.com and be sure to check out our compassionate clothing guide here.

Yay! PETA certainly is innovative to win that campaign over Twitter and other social networking sites. I'm gonna go buy some vegan Zappos shoes right now!

Congratulations to Zappos also the initiative not to mistreat most defenseless animals.

Posted by: Wolfbiter | October 21, 2008 01:24 PM

hey, great work guys, i agree don't dump kids or kitties. a family member is a family member no matter what the species . go peta go.

Posted by: bonnie | October 21, 2008 01:28 PM

wolfbiter.. look up Peta's affiliate website.. www.furisdead.com or you can goolge.. China fur trade or fur trade.. once you have learned how truly HORRENDOUSLY animals suffer for their fur.. you will understand.. and repulsed at the same time how and why other people still sell, trade or buy/wear fur..

Posted by: mico | October 21, 2008 01:31 PM

Thanks so much Zappos! And thanks PETA for bringing us information and the opportunity for change in our world. This is not only good for the animals, but it is good for our environment and, ultimately, for humankind. Long live decency, compassion and good common sense!

wolfbiter ~ It is wrong on all levels to wear fur!! It should be self-explanatory to you! Killing living, breathing things for humans to wear because it is "fashionable" is disgusting! Humans don't need fur to live. I understand cave people wearing it because it was for survival but in today's times? Come on! We have so many alternatives for keeping warm. Humans look ridiculous in fur might I add.

PeTA - remember to get Amazon.com to stop selling pro-dogfighting magazines while you're at it!

Posted by: Phill | October 21, 2008 03:26 PM

Zappos sells UGGS-so still will buy from Zappos. This is a direct quote from a PETA factsheet-
"Shearling, contrary to many consumers’ misconceptions, is not sheared wool; the term refers to a yearling sheep who has been shorn once. A shearling garment is made from the skin of a sheep or lamb shorn shortly before slaughter; the skin is tanned with the wool still on it"

Thanks to PETA's hard working effort which inspired
me a lot so I forwarded the cruelty undercover investigation video about the pig and piglets sufferings to all my friends. That Vedio almost made my heart bleeding when I was watching the innocent pig and their babies suffering without any reasons and I do not understand how any humane being can have such evil mind and heart to do the things like that. I am asking from the Buddha to find the evil man and women to get them all executed. Ever since then I've been praying on behalf of all the innocent animals to be saved by Buddhas,we are a very religious vegetarian family, most of our relatives are vegetarian ever since from their childhood and most of them now are seniors.

Thanks for Zappos agreed to go fur free. God bless you
for being a kind humane being
again.

PETA,you are doing a great job and I wish I can be lucky person to be a lottery winner so I can fully support you more.

Thank you so much on behalf of all the innocent animals.

I am soo happy to hear this news. It gives me hope that there are decent human beings out there. It is so sad to see all the leather/fur products being sold in major shopping centres for fall/winter. There's more work to be done and I am standing by Peta's and animals side 100%!

Posted by: Natalie | October 21, 2008 07:00 PM

Dear Jo, I do understand about shearling, although the Australian sheep industry has no compassion when slaughtering it's sheep population. Directly slitting an aminals throat and dumped to bleed out on other living sheep is disgusting. There is no anesthetic just a knife.
Also muesling is practiced by Aussie's again no anesthetic.

Posted by: Jacquelyn | October 21, 2008 07:18 PM

Well done PETA! again.

Posted by: Thomas | October 21, 2008 07:21 PM

Way to go Zappos!
Now i can buy your products and also recomend them to other people!
Did you know that a recent investigation revealed that people are willing to buy more products from enterprises that sell harm-ful products than from harmful ones?
the percentage is 78% of population.
In a marketing way you look better fur free to people's eyes.
:D!

I think protesting on animals is messed and the people who do it are even worse. they should go to hell and die. like who would do something like that to an animal. it is just like doing that to a human. some people should think before doing something.
just because one place stoped.
their is still over 1000 diffrent places that still do it. i feel so bad seeing dogs and cats and so many other animals that have to go through this and it is not fair. i hope the best and i also hope they rest in peace.
me and all of my friends will do what ever it takes to stop this non sence.
thanks for the good news though!!!

Zappo's does sell Uggs. And The Ugg Brand leads you to believe they are made in Australia well they are made in China. Read the label. So I will keep checking their website to see if they remove them.

Posted by: Kristi | October 23, 2008 06:25 PM

...but they still sell UGGs!
Last I heard, UGGs are made from leather and fur!!

Yesterday I posted lots of visual materials (video footage and pictures) about fur business and ahand-written personal letter, to the the editors of the magazine Instyle (Turkey) because of their promotion of real fur garments in their latest edition, fyi.

Posted by: David Tremain | October 25, 2008 09:48 PM

Great job again PETA! I am so thankful there is such a great organization as PETA that motivates people to get active in helping save the lives of animals. Also, applause to Zappos.com for doing what is right. A comment to Wolfbiter who doesn't know what the problem with wearing fur is? Are you blind or just ignorant? Have you ever witnessed an animal being beaten and skinned alive. Raised in intolerable cruelty their entire lives just so ignorant people like you can wear their skins as a status symbol. People like you sicken me and that is why millions of animals are killed and suffering on a daily basis. How would you like to be skinned alive so some evil, selfish and cruel human being could wear you around. Yeah, I didn't think so. Wake up wolfbiter, look at videos on PETA.org and other animal groups that show the daily suffering of animals and if you still don't see what is wrong with wearing fur then I guess, you are heartless. ANIMALS DESERVE TO LIVE!!

Online shoe retailer Zappos.com prides itself on good customer service, but no compassionate shopper wants to buy from a company that promotes the awful cruelty of the fur industry

I will not shop at zappos until you go permenantly fur-free!

Posted by: hannah dempsey | October 30, 2008 08:14 AM

Seroiusly? They are still selling UGGS? Isn't wool on skin considered "fur?" Great step in the right direction but I still won't buy from them...

A step towards a more rewarding future awaits Zappos.

And how ? As the saying goes - "WHAT YOU SOW IS, WHAT YOU REAP!"

Also for the fact that "GOOD DEEDS ALWAYS GET NOTICED "

You have made the right decision in terms that your act will set an example for others and will earn you respectability for the fact that you dared to do what others have not!

Posted by: Jai Singh | November 10, 2008 10:01 AM

I don't see why you all are singing peta's praises. Great, Zappo's stopped selling fur. But they still sell LOADS of LEATHER products. Why stop at fur? After all leather is just the hide of a different animal, sans the hair. Fur is murder and so is leather. Oh, and take a look at their wool selection. A half hearted victory in my opinion.

Posted by: Sarah | November 13, 2008 12:49 PM
