Raccoon Dog Pups
I don't know about you, but before last year, all I knew about melamine was that it was used to make a hard resin for shatter-resistant kitchenware and floor laminates. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous companies in China found another use for it—adding it to foods to make them appear to have higher protein content. This resulted in the illness and deaths of dogs and cats in the U.S. and Europe, and, more recently, of humans (mostly children) in China.

Now comes word that melamine contamination appears to be responsible for killing 1,500 Chinese raccoon dogs. As horrible as it is to die from melamine poisoning, the alternative isn't much better for these animals, because raccoon dogs in China are commonly raised and skinned alive for their fur.

Either way, the responsibility for these horrible deaths falls squarely on the shoulders of those who support this cruelty by buying fur. If the raccoon dogs had been left alone in their native habitats, they wouldn't be eating an artificial, contaminated diet—and they certainly wouldn't face having their skin ripped off their bodies while they are conscious and in agony.

So, as the weather turns colder, if you see any fur-wearers, be sure to ask them if they prefer that the money they spent for that coat, collar, or cuff caused animals to die in agony from toxic kidney failure, or like this:

What a beautiful little face.. I can not image what kind of person would what to hurt such a curious little fellow! I live in Florida so not many people I see wear fur but if I do I will give them a tongue lashing for sure!

I don't like seeing buying or wearing fur as much as the next person. Rachel Zoe is the worst. But, how appropriate is it to walk up to a total stranger and start questions them about their clothing choice? I am just sayin'.

Anyway, that's really sad about the racoons. China. Not such a shock to me.

Posted by: bbr | October 22, 2008 04:13 PM

you really need to quit abusing animals like this... the people who does this should be shot ... well more less put in jail and then electricuted..

Posted by: latara | October 22, 2008 04:27 PM

Could you imagine the pain these guys went through?!! I never had to try and pass a kidney stone but I've heard from others who have and it's decribed as un-believable pain!! "Death trap villages" in China, literally "trapped" until they are bludgeoned to death.

Posted by: Carla | October 22, 2008 04:59 PM

BBR--People who wear fur need to accept responsiblity for their actions, which includes taking a little bit of crap from total strangers on occasion. I never hesitate to discuss their clothing choices with them. I do it politely and I have cards from the Humane Society I pass out to them. They are always baffled and shocked when they are called to task by my friends and I. I don't think they actively consider themselves to guilty of animal cruelty.

It's one of the most barbaric acts! It brings me to tears. After seeing this footage I could not sleep for weeks. I wish I could go to China and save every one of those beautiful creatures!I wish I could save every animal, everywhere, from this sick abuse!

Posted by: Tammy | October 22, 2008 06:32 PM

I feel that China's barbaric and unbelievably cruel treatment of these poor dogs is the most offensive animal abuse I have ever seen, particularly at a time when in our own country we are taking measures to make life easier for our own farm animals. Is there anything else we Americans can do to actually help these dogs aside from boycotting the fur industry?

Posted by: Mark Darcourt | October 22, 2008 07:10 PM

That's soo horrible...I had to fast forward through the skinning parts. I just couldn't stand it :(

Posted by: poolpo | October 22, 2008 07:31 PM

This broke my heart, about a year ago my sister sent me a leather coat with fur lining. I cannot imagine what those animals went through. Its also kind of interesting because I read that Baby Phat didn't use animal skins but when I took my coat to the dry cleaner they had to send it to a leather cleaner because the arms were made out of real leather. Kind of makes you think who's telling the truth.

Posted by: Denise | October 22, 2008 08:18 PM

this is the most disturbing footage I have ever seen. something needs to be done to stop this.

Posted by: Amy | October 22, 2008 08:49 PM

Posted by: dani pankamo | October 22, 2008 08:58 PM

Why don't you send these people to my house? I would be happy to dole out the same treatment to them and see how they like it God, what an ugly world we live in. Makes me wish I could leave the frekin planet!

Posted by: christinalundry | October 22, 2008 11:34 PM

well to the person who asked how appropriate is it to walk up to somebody and ask about their clothing, how appropriate is it to BUY an ANIMALS' fur, yes that's right an ANIMALS' fur, not a person's, who was skinned alive. Imagine your skin being pulled off of you while you're alive and helpless. They are supporting this torturous murder, and if you don't want to go up to them and ask them what is mentioned above, then inform them, maybe give them a pamphlet. That way you don't have to say anything. Most people will probably just disregard and throw it away, but... If nobody spoke up for the speechless animals, then people who torture and murder the animals will think that they have won and nobody can stop them. That's why every single voice counts :)

Posted by: Kelly | October 23, 2008 12:54 AM

Bbr, by starting conversation and letting someone wearing fur know about the cruelty involved so they can wear a coat, it helps to stop the fur industry. Especially if you direct them to this video - who the hell wants to wear fur after seeing an animal skinned alive for it?

Posted by: Valerie Tierney | October 23, 2008 08:28 AM

Doesn't look like a dog to me. More like a wildlife raccoon. And don't our own DNR people trap & poison them all the time in order to keep them from overpopulating and attacking children? You lost me on this one.

Posted by: Greggy | October 23, 2008 08:30 AM

bbr, if someone is walking down the street in a fur coat, clearly they are doing it so that people will look at it and admire them. And they clearly don't care that an innocent creature had to be tortured in order for them to do it. When they flaunt their lack of compassion, they deserve to be confronted about it.

Posted by: Maria | October 23, 2008 10:13 AM

Skinning anything while it is alive is the most cruelest thing imaginable.

I have been writing to Oprah for her to do a show on the fur trade....we will see what happens

I deal with China a lot and the hideous abuse of animals to me represents a culture with no respect or grace. Unbelievable when you think their religion is Budhism which is based on the belief of caring for all living things and giving praise and respect to its beauty and life. I watched this video the first time a year ago and I physically vomited and my heart rate went crazy. I hope nothing will ever have that effect on me again. That image will always be with me, the image that mankind can be so utterly miserable and cruel beyond all things.

Posted by: ASHER NARDONE | October 23, 2008 11:14 AM

when i watched this video i was shocked so badly that i couldnt sleep properly without seeing and hearing the dogs in my dreams i cannot watch anything like it again but i am sickened to the core that people can do this and then go home as though nothings wrong, i cant understand why they are allowed to carry this on we know where they are get in there and help ive always thought that china was a place to be scared of but now i am terrified of that place their lack of heart makes me broken hearted and just deeply saddened

Posted by: emma | October 23, 2008 11:48 AM

I too watch about 15 seconds of that video before I knew I would be haunted for the rest of my life. I now make it a point to tell all my friends, associates and strangers to not buy any fur or leather products (especially shoes and boots and purses) from China or any other foriegn country, and I tell them why. Most are very surprised to here the animals are skinned alive and very saddened. I'd like to skin those workers alive, unfortunately I can't do that. Hopefully enlightening others will help end some suffering.

Posted by: Merrie durbano | October 23, 2008 02:28 PM

This is horrible, why do people have to tamper with the environment? I am personally excited because i am starting an animal rights and preservation club at my school and i will share this news with everyone
also it made me very angry to see that there is a FUR SALON in the new york bloomingdales. so dissapointing...I started crying when i saw all that fur.

It is hard to believe that there is anything more atrociously evil in this world than this.

Posted by: Amanda S. | October 23, 2008 03:40 PM

this is another barbaric act that humans perform on animals. there is no reason to wear fur or to support another living breathing things torture. makes you wonder who is the real animal here answer the human is the real animal.

Posted by: meredith | October 23, 2008 06:26 PM

I wish i could help all the animals in the world from such unbelievable inhumane cruelty by man. I was sickened to the very core by this footage and couldn't watch it all, it will haunt me forever. I wish more people were made aware what is actualy happening in the fur trade and help do something about it and not shut there eyes and ears and not care.

Posted by: Karen | October 23, 2008 08:52 PM

I don't need to watch the video. I've seen videos of Chinese meat farms skinning and butchering dogs alive. It's revolting. The pain and anguish for these poor animals who are still, unbelievably, alive as their bodies are thrown on the heap of previously skinned dogs is indescribably heart-wrenching. This country NEVER should have been allowed to hold the Olympics. Furthermore, we should restrict trade with them until they clean up their act. I'm SICK of hearing that China is the new up-and-coming world industrial power. Their food is contaminated, their air and water is FILTHY, and the country is RIFE with both human rights violations and animal cruelty.

Posted by: Karen Saucedo | October 23, 2008 08:58 PM

NO WAY, I would NEVER buy any fur item from China. I live just fine without it.

A while ago I somehow forced myself to watch the indescribable suffering of the poor coon dogs- because I felt I should know what these animals went through, because there is no more convenient excuse than ignorance- but I have never quite recovered. There will always be a part of me that is haunted by those sounds and images, the awful truth, and scarred by utter hatred for the people who could do this. How I don't know, but I do know it's my life's mission to help put a stop to animal cruelty. I couldn't watch the next part of the video though, after the first coon dog. By then I was almost physically throwing up- and definitely thoroughly sick of the human race. Thankyou PETA for your undying devotion to the cause, and your unflinching approach to the truth of what goes on. Here's hoping for a better world, and only for the sake of the animals. God knows they deserve it.

Posted by: Trisha | October 24, 2008 04:28 AM

I have never wore fur and I never will! But after seeing the video, I just HAVE to go out and do my best to help all these poor critters! My heart is just broken over people being so cruel!

Posted by: Vickie | October 24, 2008 09:10 AM

These industries that profit on animal suffering are disgusting. I don't wear any animal products (fur, leather, wool, cashmere, etc) but I don't freak on people because they choose to. I find it funny that people are willing to give an old lady a tongue lashing for wearing fur but not a Hell's Angel biker for wearing leather. What's the difference, they're both wearing animals?

Posted by: S Brown | October 24, 2008 10:42 AM

I think the China's pratice of skinning rabbits, cats, dogs, and raccon dogs alive is horrific. I have sent letters and e-mails to China expressing my views on their horrible pratice and lack of laws protecting animals. If I were an animal I would think humans were the devil. So many cultures have NO regrad for animals.

Posted by: Charlene | October 24, 2008 11:54 AM

Charlene, how ironic that you would comment on animals viewing us as the "devil".

William Inge, a famous playright, once stated..."We have enslaved the rest of the animal creation, and have treated our distant cousines in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were to formulate a religion, they would depict the devil in human form." ~Outspoken Essays

In any culture where people continue to regard other living beings as mere "things" with no feelings or ability to suffer, you will have an overall primitiveness in their society as a whole.

It makes me ill whenever I pick up a product that is labeled with these words--Made in China.

The human species is a despicable one--so full of arrogance and self-importance.

Posted by: Susan T | October 24, 2008 01:32 PM

I recently watched the video showing these poor creatures being skinned alive and, like most people who have commented on this site, I too was sickened and disgusted. I could not sleep for several nights and found myself continually haunted by those images. I felt so powerless to do anything to help, realizing that I just couldn't hop a plane to China like some kind of animal rights "Rambo" and put an end to this suffering. What I could do, however, was donate to Peta and other animal organizations fighting this abysmal practice and make my voice heard by writing letters and handing out literature. I never had a clue that skinning animals alive was taking place until I saw that video and I suspect most people in this country are uninformed as well. Knowledge is power so I'm going to keep spreading the message and do what I can in my corner of the planet to make some difference for animals. It was also heartening to see so many folks express in writing what I had been feeling after seeing this torture. I thought I was the only one who felt so strongly about this and it was an encouragement to see so many decent human beings respond with appropriate outrage.

I agree with Trisha and Lisa completely about the freekout for days after the film and the not knowing what was happening and the Rambo feeling to save the raccoon dogs and the dogs and cats. If they died quickly or had better houses and food and water decently then I might think about it but why the cruelity and butchery. I also read we butcher alive cows, pigs, sheep and horses too.

Charlene: Although I agree with you that there are cultures with no regard for animals, you really don't need to look as far away as China. The US has virtually no regard for animals, either, since we are a culture that liberally eats, wears, and experiments on them. Although I think that contacting Chinese authorities is admirable, please don't think the Chinese are lower on the scale of animal respect than the US because they absolutely are not. To the extent that we MAY have more animal protection laws, just remember that unenforced laws are no better than no laws at all. GO VEGAN-

There is no excuse for wearing fur and famous fur hags like madonna, jlo, blige, sharon stoneheart, celine dion or the trollsens have something in common: they are all together looking old since their tender age - hence it is obvious that some elderly looking women want to hide themselves behind skins of dead animals! and the result: they are looking even more old and ugly and men's hearts are freezing!

Posted by: SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION | October 25, 2008 04:25 PM

yes, China is too cruel to animals for any words--but I think people are waking up to their sadistic nature--I stay away from all products labeled, "made in China"--and urge others to do the same--china is so very strange, makes one wonder if they are really aware of the effect they have on the rest of the world-absolutely shameful--

Posted by: mary | October 25, 2008 10:59 PM

Pigs, dogs, cats, horses, primates, etc--is there any animal on earth that humans do NOT torture, kill, exploit?--would like to know the answer to that--pretty horrible, isn't it?

Posted by: nikki | October 25, 2008 11:06 PM

Susan,
I feel that way about China too. They want to get ahead so bad they are like barbarians toward man and animals.

WHO is buying all these furs??? There are fake furs, which are cheaper. Why would anyone patronize killing animals this way.

Where are the people with money who have millions, who could do something about this?

If I was a millionaire, I would buy out the politicians and stop the imports of these products and put these savages out of business, because that is how it is done...you have to get them in the wallet.

Those poor dogs. I felt like a piece of me died watching that.

Posted by: Debbie | October 26, 2008 12:02 AM

Shame on you, China!

Posted by: Janine | October 26, 2008 05:53 PM

First off, I just wanted to check this site out to see what its all about. I am an active hunter. I have shot many, many animals. I have gutted and skined too many to count. But this is fucking sick. How could anyone do that to any living thing while it is alive. I think everyone responsible should die a very agonizing, slow death.
After everything I have seen, nothing has ever bothered me. But this, well, I dont really know what else to say.

I still dont plan on not going hunting anymore.

Posted by: g | October 26, 2008 09:21 PM

This is disgusting, not that i would expect anything less from the Chinese! They have no respect for this world! And anyone who buys fur is just as bad as they are with no respect for themselves or this world!

Posted by: Vivienne Scholtz | October 27, 2008 05:37 AM

Um, for the record China's religion is NOT Buddhism - it is Atheism and they persecute Buddhists in the same way they do animals.

Buddhists believe that all life must be respected and many are vegetarian.

China is a brutal country and the fur industry is the least of it's problems.

Rather than get angry at the person skinning the animal, use that energy to protest any US manufacturer buying the fur.

The best way to end animal abuse abroad is to become a peaceful example in the world... for the US to stop killing innocent people through illegal wars, to stop factory farming and to stop our own fur factories and puppy mills.

Posted by: Natalie | October 27, 2008 12:47 PM

I spare fur wearers no curteousy on the street. My aim: to make them feel about as low as the dead pile. I would not help them in any way or circumstance no matter what was happening to them on the street. In other words I would not pee on them if they were on fire. I will not speak to them if they ask me a question no matter who they are or what they do. There are some people who think handing out flyers is the best approach on this subject but I prefer to hand them their heads. God Damn them all to Hell! There is no excuse whatsoever for that, to spend tens of thousands of dollars to support such industry is the height of greed and vulgarity.

I am utterly horrified at the cruelty and barbaric tortures inflicted on countless animals by Asian cultures claiming to "strive for enlightenment".

It is the duty of anyone who cares to do everything possible to eliminate these practices. On the subject at hand, if more people knew this was happening, there'd be more pressure on the Governments and Countries involved to end this horror. It's a very frightening thought that people can be so completely unaffected by the agony they inflict on these hapless creatures. Let's do something today! I'm not sure how PETA feels about synthetic furs but surely that is a better alternative for fashion and winter clothing. I'll never wear fur and nobody I know of condones it these days either.

Posted by: Marco | March 14, 2009 11:30 PM

The world should enact trade embargoes against CHINA until it stops torturing these beautiful animals. It is horrific and beyond evil - it is insane and if I had the power I would put those responsible for it to death in similar fashion.

China, your barbarian reputation is a disgrace to the modern world!

Posted by: Joseph B | April 29, 2009 11:48 PM

I cant even watch the video i dont want to. China is a disgrace to the world, other countries need to stand up for the beautiful creatures that are being murdered and tortured there. I cant even express it how much i loathe china and anyone who wears fur or anything from china. Just to sum it up and make it short we have to BOYCOTT CHINA!

The first time I watched this video from the PETA site, I just went numb, now I find myself in tears at the slightest thought of all this. I hope one day these people who do this to animals get skinned alive, to feel the very pain they have been inflicting upon innocent and defenseless creatures.

Even if they need the fur, why can't those people just let the animals go in peace rather than hitting them & let the poor fellows died in pain & bleed to death. I wonder what's in their minds when they were torturing the poor fellows. Praying hard that these people will stop!!!

Why isn't this video boardcast in news or talkshows to gain its widespread awareness.... i wonder....

its really hard to comprehend the pain and sufferings from these poor animals.. imagine if it was you being tied up and skinned alive.. I hope these farmers and their associates suffer the same at their final moments.

May peace be with these animials....

Lets all boycott and do our bit for them.
