Caged Pigs Greet Grocery Shoppers in California

Though our "Meet Your Meat" video has always been successful at reaching people, wouldn't it be so much more effective if people had to watch it right before they went shopping for groceries? For shoppers at an Albertsons grocery in San Diego yesterday, that's just what we arranged.
Shoppers entering the store were greeted with two lifelike statues of pigs in gestation crates, allowing them to see firsthand the cruelty that pork, ham, sausage, and bacon purchases support. The statues illustrate the way that sows who are used for breeding are crammed into tiny, isolated metal crates—much like a jail cell fitted around their bodies—for months at a time. This is just one part of the life of hell that is guaranteed to pigs on factory farms, as a recent undercover investigation has shown.
Why Albertsons in San Diego? Assuming you haven't been living under a rock (where did that expression come from?), you've probably heard of California's "Proposition 2," which will appear on the state ballot this November. It includes many items related to space allotment (read: cage size) which would improve the plight of factory-farmed animals—picking up where the sorely lacking federal Animal Welfare Act left off.
Of course, even if you're not registered to vote in California, there's still something you can do to help—don't eat animals, duh!

I think this demo would be very effective.. I wish I could get together with some people and do this demo outside my local supermarket !.. I wish all supermarkets had this kind of demo outisde them.. it will make people think before they go in and buy those battery eggs, dairy products and all those other meat products.. if you can't forgoe completely.. then just cut down.. or opt for 'kinder options' such as free range eggs or chickens, soy milk or 'welfare reared approved meats' it really isn't that painful or difficult AT ALL!!

People need to see the cruelty their dietary choices cause. Someone going into a store to purchase animal products should have to see how the animals have suffered before they end up as cut up pieces of meat in a case.

This is such a great visual. Some people might not want to stop to watch a video, but this can't be missed. How about showing veal calves in their little crates or tiny cages crammed with chickens. People who eat meat should be aware of what their choice means.

Hopefully, it'll make people come to their senses & realize what these poor, innocent pigs are going through everyday, living a life of complete misery on these factory farms!

Beth, it's easy to do a demo outside a supermarket and it does a lot of good! Just pick up some PETA leaflets and hand 'em out. Or on any public sidewalk. You will open people's eyes! Go for it!

unless you are in imminent danger (as in likely to be killed not like being scratched by a canary or something) don't kill animals instead if in danger first try to scare them off or tranquilize them (only if necessary.)

Beauty! I think this is one of your best demos. People need to see the real picture of life for pigs, not the idyllic one agribusiness wants to project to keep their customers.

KELLEY HAS A GREAT POINT. I THINK IF THEY ONLY KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON AND COULD SEE IT, MOST PEOPLE WOULD GO VEGGIE.

My family went vegetarian the moment we saw the factory farming videos on PETA. That was about 8 months ago. It is not that hard and the benefits are enormous! With so many meat substitutes (and I hope PETA will advocate many more)in our Walmart, we are able to eat better than we did before. We are now trying our best to be vegans and substitute rice milk and soy cheese for cheese. We stopped eating eggs. We are really happy with our decision and believe me, where we live, in the heart of the Ozarks, this is just very unusual. We really would love to advocate this to more people. We are here to help, PETA, and thank you for all the work you do to bring these things to the attention of people.

ANIMAL ABUSE IN FACTORY FARMING IS A SHAME FOR THE WHOLE HUMANITY! I JUST HOPE THAT THIS AMAZING DEMO WILL CHANGE THE CRIMINAL AND ABUSIVE ATTITUDES OF AS MANY AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE THIS CONTINUOUS TORTURE IS UNBEARABLE FOR AN UPRIGHT HEART!

I think it is wonderful that more ppl are getting involved and "educating" the public about the hidden horrors of the meat industry. Also a HUGE thank you to Pam Anderson for her work, especially recently in Australia. Also a comment for Connee from Ozarks--that's great you made the switch. Your family will appreciate and love you more for that. And no matter where you are in the world, it is possible to do the right thing, even when everyone around you doesn't agree or thinks you are so called"strange".

This is very, very effective. We need to manufacture those and take them to demos all over the country and beyond. This is the image that turned my life around and put me on the path to veganism. It was either '00 or '01 when I just happened to pick up the NY Times that day and read the article "The Unnatural idea of Animal Rights" You see, I was looking for a reason to keep eating meat, a confirmation for what I believed. Instead, they hooked me with this story. If I thought it was about what it was about I probably wouldn't have read it.
This is a hook that is going to change peoples hearts and minds. You can't look away from this. It's the power of art. The power of Goodness.
A year or two later the Times ran a photo of pigs in is gestation crates that shattered my heart into pieces.
We must stop this suffering!

I think that people should know where there food comes from and know how horrible it is for them to live there life in a small cage with about 6 more chickens with them!! I mean how would u like to be trapped in a elevador ur whole life with 6 other people in with u i mean it is really sad what people do to these animals!!

I am a high school teacher and a a couple of my students who were moved by the factory farming videos that I showed are doing their senior thesis with exhibition of this issue. Is this display availabe on the East Coast,(NJ) to rent or copy. I am an art teacher and would love to know more about the materials that were used.
