My gas is so bad that it’s making the ice caps melt.
CosmosMagazine / CC

The world's foremost authority on global warming, the chair of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has said that if people want to help decelerate climate change, they should "[g]ive up meat for one day [a week] initially, and decrease it from there." Media reports have called this "the most controversial advice yet."

Wait, the U.N. Panel on Climate Change is controversial for recommending Meat Free Mondays?!? Hi, Media, have we met? We're PETA. And we want you to go vegan.

Not only does the meat industry produce more greenhouse-gas emissions than all the SUVs, cars, trucks, planes, and ships in the world combined , it's also relatively easy to change your eating habits compared to changing your means of transport. So, is it that much of a leap to suggest that the way to decelerate global warming is to cut meat out of our diets? Well, to U.N. Chair (and vegetarian) Dr. Rajendra Pachauri and PETA, it ain't controversial—it's common sense. And it's what we've been saying all along.

Want to see how much a change in your diet could change your impact on the environment? Answer a few short questions, and our calculator will determine roughly how much carbon-dioxide equivalent you could prevent from polluting the Earth if you switch to a vegan diet right now. Go ahead, give it a try!

hey that's what I've been saying all along .. it doesn't hurt and it's easy peasy to go for days without having to swallow the 'flesh' stuff, boil, fried or whatever.. I practise what I preach.. and only occassionally eat a small amt of meat .. everyone should cut down.. everyone on planet earth shoudl be doing this.. I for one would like to see McDons stop selling burgers.. and just stick with their sundaes and apple pies.. but that would be too wishful thnking I suppose.. so there you have it.. a UN environmental expert actually endorsing this very important point!! no more excuses if you care about your own health the planet/environment and last but no less least.. the poor billions of intense factory farmed animals.. dont' blame the animals for damaged to the environemtn.. it's the humasn.. they're doing all the greedy meat consuming.. at the expense of everythign!!

That's great news!
To be sure, Peta has led the way on this one, too.

It's a sad day when suggesting that murdering innocent animals is wrong is considered controversial.

My only hope is that grocery stores don't take this as a cue to up the prices on vegan alternatives. Most stuff can pretty pricey as is at the moment.

Despite PETA's long time advice to the same I think the media methods that PETA uses to get attention just turns off alot of people. I did not see a single media outlet mention anything regarding animals in China during the olympics, despite PETA attempts to make it a noticed issue. I know its a hard choice to either say these things politely or scream them. So many people are just plain unconscious about the value of animals and even where their food comes from. But the graphic violence and comparisons to human tradegy really do alienate potential converts to veganism. THey also are not likely picked up on the evening news. Eating more vegetable based foods and less animal based foods is really not that difficult. Making people understand its good for their own health, good for the planet, and good for other living creatures can be done through positive voice. I do not think that is PETA's roll and I am sure groups that use a positive message to say the same thing as PETA will grab more mainstream headlines...just becuase PETA uses extreme messages.

gemc, what are you on about? a little bit of meat? hello why not stop all together... if everyone is still eating a little bit of meat there is still millions of innocent animals dying in terrible conditions. and if your doing it for your health why are you advocating that macdonalds apple pie and sudaes should still be part of a normal diet

WOW, I really liked the calculator. I know that the choices I make everyday make a difference, but never like this and in only two aspects. Just think of what the overall impact is. Just in 14 years I have saved 3920 animals by choosing a vegetarian diet! By sticking with it, I will save over 10920 more animals from dying and 128700 lbs. of CO2e from polluting the Earth during my lifetime. One word, Amazing! If everyone joined in, we truely could save the world. ;) As far as the United Nations statement. I don't know that many people in the world listen to them but every little bit helps.

Hello.
