Pigs Tattooed for ... Luggage?

Short of dogfighting, there isn't any lower activity than abusing animals for the sake of art. Anyone who has a tattoo knows that you voluntarily tough it out and do it in stages, but Belgian artist Wim Delvoye has apparently put countless pigs—who have extremely sensitive skin—through hours of tattooing, covering their whole backs and down their sides in designs that range from religious emblems and Disney princesses to Louis Vuitton's logo.
Pig skin closely resembles human skin in sensitivity, so just imagine what the pigs endured by being jabbed with a needle over and over and over and over and over again—by a giant person who has restrained them and seems to have no end point in mind. The sheer intensity of the anxiety, fear, and confusion that these animals go through as they fail to understand what is happening to them is an atrocity in and of itself.
If life imitates art, what's this artist's life like, do you think? One presumes that these pigs will eventually be slaughtered for their skin—in the name of meat, art, or fashion. So please give a thought to the pigs and other animals: Check your closet for leather bags and other items, then ask yourself: Should you really hang that piece of "art" on your arm or over your shoulder?

The world has gone totally bonkers. This is almost as bad as the headcase who starved a dog to death in the name of art (but shame on those spectators that never did anything about it - dispicable).
What in gods name is the point of putting an animal through this mindless and totally pointless cruelty? I despair somedays I really do.

Wow, what a loser. For shame. The art market sinks to a brand new low; it's as big a scam, at this point, as any of the nonsense going down in flames on Wall Street. As far as this abusive and inane "live animal art" goes, I have a funny feeling Damien Hirst is to blame for starting it all, albeit with animals that are already dead. Somewhere the Masters are rolling in their graves.

An artist? I don't think so—more like a psychopath.

Just when you think the monsters of this world can't do anything more to shock/disgust you -- they do !

I cannot stand "artists" like this. They are self promoting narcissists...not great souls expressing themselves.
This "artist" sounds like a real selfish jerk. Hey, buddy, let me clue you in. Real artists, the ones with souls, are thoughtful and have hearts and would never do this. Ever.

I'm glad you guys picked up on this story, I read on Bloomberg Mr. Delvoye was banned from an art show in China. Of course he slays the animals after torturing them with tattooing. He makes his money by selling tattooed pig skin. He works from a farm outside Beijing. He reminds me of the psycho from Silence of the Lambs, or Pigs in his case. What a repulsive person.

Ew, ew, ew, ew, EWW!
I want to vomit.
He calls THAT art!?
Cruelty = ART!?
That is a disgusting man and I hope he suffers greatly.

THIS IS SAD AND SICK. WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THIS? CAN WE SEND E-MAILS TO LOCAL POLICE IN THAT COUNTRY? WHAT CAN WE DO TO PROTECT AND STOP THIS FROM GOING ON THERE? PETA, LET USE KNOW, O.K. WE HAVE TO GET INVOLVED IN STOPPING THIS. I WILL BE THE FIRST TO SEND THE E-MAIL!

What a disgusting excuse for a human being.
I miss the days when art truly meant something.

I understand the man with the starving dog better. He has succeded in making people aware of the thousands of stray dogs and possibly helped many. But this one... What the @£#%$ is he trying to say? This is clearly animal abuse.

That's not art, that's cruel and unnecessary animal abuse plain and simple. What an immoral and insensitive psychopath. and anybody foolish enough to call that art needs their head examined.

"ARTIST"? HE IS A 2008 JOSEF MENGELE. HE CANNOT BE HELPED IF HE IS ABLE TO WATCH AN ANIMAL SUFFER FOR THAT LONG AT HIS OWN HANDS AND CALL IT "ART"! IT IS NEEDLESS TORTURE!

I have been a member of PETA for about 2 months. I check their site out every day. Everytime I think I have seen the worst in cruelty PETA exposes something more disturbing. But this one is by far the most obnoxious story so far.
The artist is obiously insane. What concerns me are the people who purchase these disgusting products!
I see from the forum that this is also may be a problem with Chinas's poor animal rights history too!
Surprise,suprise!

human sickness continues more than ever...animal cruelty is such an enjoyable past-time for these bastards

I listened to an interview with this guy on...I think NPR a couple of weeks ago. Is this the same guy who tattoo'd a mans back and people bid on his back piece to have when he dies? Can you imagine? What's next? Stuffing dead babies and hanging them on the wall? Maybe place them in cute poses? What a sick human being. I don't understand how anyone would want to be involved with this. It's absolutely disgusting. Some weeks I wish I could move to a vegan country.

First off, I think this so called artist is a sadist and gets his rocks off by seeing the animal suffering and the animal can't fight back, 2nd
Corporations and entities like the so called DISNEY and Louis Vuitton and the religious right should not buy these products and this so called artist would be out of business or he would have to get his rocks off another way.Tell so called artist thats what they made canvas for unless he doesn't know how to paint!

Is there anything we can do to help? Any petition or place to e-mail? This cruelty must stop!
Posted by: Kathleen W. | September 25, 2008 01:10 PM
These monsters just continually thrive on cruelty, and most if not all are sadists! If you have an ounce of innocence in you and you can get away from these monsters, run like hell, because they want to take it from you and feed on it! Animals have no choice! This picture shows what happens to them! I would love nothing more than to meet the human monster that did this! I would like to shake his or her hand! :)
Abolish Animal Slavery!

poor pigs.. they.. (unlike humans) did not ask to be tattoed.. and it's not only partially but practically all down it's back.. and we all know how painful being tattoed is!!
hope these pigs having being pointlessly been tattoed will now be a living piece of 'work of art' and be saved from the abbatoir..
(still a silly banal meaningless tattoeing idea in the first place anyway..)

This reminds me of an artist back in the day who tied a dog up in a small area with food and water just out of his reach, and people just watched and waited, and they called it art. Art is beauty, beauty is not the torture of animals.
God, please put an end to this cruelty.

I'm not exactly a full time artist, but as someone who paints and plays violin I find this extremely offensive!! The art world needs to organize themselves and put this uncreative sod out of business!!

Just when I believe I can't be further shocked or disgusted by animal cruelty, some monster proves me wrong and out-jerks himself. Truly disgusting. Hopefully karma will catch-up to him someday soon.

This story makes me sick!! How is this in anyway called Art? What Sick Bas****s would dream of such a thing, let alone the people who condone this. This freak ( he is no man ) deserves to have something done to him that he would not appreciate. Against his will while he is held down. What a PUKE!! I say we hold him down and brand him everywhere possible. I also agree there should be a phone number or email to get ahold of this jerk ASAP. Thanks for the info PETA....

That's really sick.
Posted by: Josh | September 26, 2008 12:15 PM
Ugh, this is totally inhumane. It's one thing to do it voluntarily, it's another thing to restrain someone else and do it painfully and carelessly.
I have one thing to say and that is:
Ouchikabibbles. >_<

It would be good if there was a way of letting this idiot know how we feel about his so called art.
