Lipstick on a Pig

If you've been on planet Earth in the last 24 hours, you've probably heard the phrase "If you put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig" more times than you can count. Well, we at PETA would like to put our own spin on this phrase and let everyone know that there should never be any real reason for lipstick on a pig unless it's because you've just given a pig a big kiss for being so darn cute.
Next time you do your makeup in the morning, ask yourself, "Who was my lipstick tested on?" Rats, mice, and bunnies are still exploited in the world of product testing, and pigs are used for cruel experiments as well. And yes, pigs still suffer from abuse in the factory-farming industry.
We've thrown our own spin on this whole "lipstick on a pig" media frenzy and created the following two ads to make people think about where their cosmetics and their food come from. Check out our new ads, and please vote for your favorite by leaving a comment below!

#2 gets my vote!
Posted by: Stephanie | September 11, 2008 04:47 PM
little piglets always look so darned cute.. I could give them a big wet sloppy schmooch! myself.. guess that means I like/vote for the first one..
LOVE animals.. don't eat them.. or if you can't manage that.. at the very least eat little/less meat..
Posted by: bet | September 11, 2008 04:48 PM
I hate to be oversensitive here, but I don't appreciate derogatory remarks that involve animals. It shows a lack of respect for one that is used to express a point. Think about all the things people used to say that involved derogatory remarks that involved humans, particularly African-Americans and Jews. Now, most of us avoid those expressions, and rightfully so. Animals deserve the same respect.
Again, I apologize for my oversensitivity.
I do love the ads BTW. Good job!

I love the first one !!
Posted by: Joan | September 11, 2008 05:13 PM
2nd is better, but they're both adorable ^v^
Posted by: BLT | September 11, 2008 05:16 PM
I adore both of them !
I'm going to vote for the first one though, becuase i will never eat a pig. They are my favourite animals, and I am now working on cutting beef and every other type of meat out of my diet too :D
So yeah..I vote for # 1 !
Posted by: Megan | September 11, 2008 06:31 PM
I love both of them, but I would pick #1. That ad says it all, and the pig in the photo is so cute!
Posted by: Kathleen W. | September 11, 2008 06:43 PM
SECOND ONE!
Posted by: Joel | September 11, 2008 06:49 PM
I like the first one more. :3
Posted by: Rayna | September 11, 2008 07:03 PM
I like the second one.
Posted by: Alicia | September 11, 2008 07:36 PM
Good use of turning that idiotic comment around . . and giving someone a title or job doesn't make them any less ignorant either.
Using animals to describe mean people or actions are offensive and uncalled for. Leave the poor, innocent animals out of it . . . it's not funny!! . . . I like the second poster. It's amazing how many people actually think that's what testing means, they don't understand the "testing" concept, that's why I've learned to say "experiment on", it's a more dramatic term.
Posted by: NANCY | September 11, 2008 09:40 PM
I like the first one better. Yet the statement on the second has more impact, one can hardly notice the lipstick.
Posted by: Aurea Abrantes | September 11, 2008 10:02 PM
THE FIRST ONE - BECAUSE IT'S SO CUTE !!!!! THE KISS ON THE PIGS FACE IS SO CLEAR. THE 2ND ONE , YOU HAVE TO REALLY LOOK AT THE PIGS LIPS AND THAT TOOK TIME BECAUSE ALL I SAW WAS HIS CUTE BIG EARS !!!!NOW IF YOU WOULD HAVE PUT SOME EYE LASHES ON THE 2ND PIG ALONG WITH THE LIPSTICK....THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY CUTE- HA-HA-HA ANYWAY , GREAT JOB - CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHICH ONE WINS !!!MY VOTE IS FOR #1 !!!!
Posted by: SASHA | September 11, 2008 10:24 PM
I love them both but I choose the first one.

Posted by: Curtis | September 11, 2008 10:59 PM
i like the 1st one! too cute!
Posted by: Niranjan | September 11, 2008 11:09 PM
I think the 1st one is cutest, but the 2nd one makes it clear that animal testing isn't just an animal wearing lipstick.
Like Joel, #2#2#2

Marisa, check out http://www.caringconsumer.com to find out what companies test on animals and what companies don't

Number one is the best of the two; this slogan (with the piggie icon) would make a great t-shirt!
Posted by: Nathan | September 12, 2008 12:49 AM
love them both.. those piggies are so precious man..
Posted by: Tanisha | September 12, 2008 02:17 AM
I love them both. Anything that will help put the word out that animals are our friends, not our food - is good.
Posted by: Linda Davidson | September 12, 2008 05:57 AM
I like the first one better; to paraphrase a T-shirt: "I support animal testing only to prove that they're kissably soft!".
Posted by: Ashleigh | September 12, 2008 09:05 AM
I like the first one better, It's the only way a pig should ever wear lipstick through kissess for being so cute.
I don't personally like making animals look funny or ridiculed like the second one. But if the message gets across this way, I'm all for it too.
Posted by: PatriciaSnel | September 12, 2008 10:16 AM
i love the one love me don't eat me. it sooo freakin cute

The first one. The second one is kind of creepy for some reason... It reminds me of my mom's second cousin Gail...
Posted by: Lola | September 12, 2008 12:18 PM
I love the first one!
It should get the most response I would think. Great job!
Posted by: Penny | September 12, 2008 01:10 PM

Posted by: Bill Barker | September 12, 2008 04:01 PM
I like them both, because now I have gone vegetarian and I always look for products that don´t test in animals. My vote for num. 2!!! PETA go ahead!!!
Posted by: Avril R. | September 12, 2008 05:46 PM
Oh my they are to cute for words! Not an easy choice but I say the first due to the fact many more pigs are on factory farms suffering. Great ads! Keep up the wonderful work! What about the saying "like putting perfume on a sunk?"
Posted by: Crystal | September 12, 2008 07:32 PM
I take forever shopping, it's so difficult trying to find products that haven't been tested on animals! Some cosmetics even contain animal ingredients, yuck!!
If it doesn't say on the label, 'against animal testing,' for example; then the company probably does experiment on animals.
I like the Body Shop, they don't test on animals and they also use recycled packaging, v. Environmentally friendly. However, i can't afford to buy this stuff all the time unfortunately, it kinda drains on your cashflow.
I would thoroughly recommend ELF cosmetics: 'EyesLipsFace.' You can order online, every single item is £1.50. Superb value.

I definitely love the seoond one. It makes a powerful statement.
Posted by: Cathy Munroe | September 13, 2008 03:48 PM
I like the first picture the best. It's so nurturing and caring and warm.
Whenever I hear the words "animal testing" it makes my stomach turn. I feel a sick feeling and a real deep pain in my heart.
Posted by: Sharon Girouard | September 14, 2008 02:48 AM
#1 It's true! Only vegetarians/vegans can really look into the eyes of these lovely animals !
Posted by: Maureen | September 14, 2008 12:32 PM
the first is great but i like the second more. it tells what animal cruelty is not. when people ask how can you test lipstick on an animal.
Posted by: Paige | September 14, 2008 02:03 PM
i loveeeeee the second one!
Posted by: Hali | September 14, 2008 04:06 PM

Posted by: Sam Gago | September 15, 2008 08:24 AM
I like both of them, However, they both take at a differnt angle so it all depends on which angle you support. I happen to support both, they are each very good for what they support.

I want to kiss a pig...
Posted by: Isabel Porras-Best | September 15, 2008 11:58 AM

Posted by: JAMIE | September 16, 2008 12:52 PM
love the first! second one kind of creeps me out... although, I wish i had a second cousin named gail to compare...
Posted by: Niki | September 16, 2008 02:18 PM
Both ads are very good, but my vote goes to the second ad. It must surely show people that testing on animals has a lot more too it than they think!
Posted by: LESLEY EATOCK | September 16, 2008 03:03 PM
I understand the second ad, and Im sure it will get the point across to people who are not aware, however I do think it's kind of creepy. My vote goes to the first ad. Yes some people need to be hit right in the face to get a point, but reaching out on a subconscious level is the better way to go.
Posted by: Michelle R | September 16, 2008 03:33 PM
Accutally the radio show I listen to in the morning sent their intern to find out how quick it would take to put lipstick on an actual pig with permission from the farm of course and it takes alittle bit longer than a minute to do so.
And yeah can someone explain to me why they can't simply test on humans?
Posted by: King of Fiji | September 16, 2008 04:30 PM
i love them BOTH!! but since we should choose one like PETA asked.. i think the last one is very funny, love the face!
Posted by: katie | September 16, 2008 06:48 PM
Love the first one!
Posted by: Rosalyn | September 17, 2008 01:23 AM
#2 - very clever!
Posted by: Laurie C | September 17, 2008 01:41 AM
The 1st picture for the 2nd message!! (and CAN ALSO USE 1st message) because it touches the heart more; rather than make an integrity compromising joke directly on the pig, with the red lips (more invasive than the innocent kiss in #1) and the AMBIGUOUS expression! People in general aren't smart enough to realize you probably enhanced a photo by adding lipstick to the picture. I don't think a pig would enjoy having lipstick put on; but might enjoy a loving kiss. (I guess that's the point).
Thank you for all you do to educate us on cruelty free shopping and choices.

Can you send me the list of companies that test with animals? ALso a list of companies that don't? Please send to my email. xxbasket_casexx@hotmail.com
Thank you!
Posted by: Courtney | September 17, 2008 02:33 PM
Do you know that there is an ingredient in lipstick that comes from a pig? So even if your lipstick or other cosmetics aren't tested on an animal, most products do contain an ingredient (known as co-product or by-product) that comes from hogs and cattle.
Posted by: Aggie | September 17, 2008 03:18 PM
I liked both of them, but, if I could suggest something, is that the information could be bigger, so the people take conscience of it...
Posted by: Laura Andrea | September 17, 2008 04:35 PM
The first one gets my vote.
That little piggy is so cute!!
Posted by: Colleen | September 17, 2008 07:48 PM
I vote for the "This is not what animal testing looks like"- because I think this ad focuses attention from a wider demographic instead of appealing to vegetarians only.
;)
keep up the great work

Although i find the first one the cutest thing in the world and would just love to adopt that pig, i find that the second add has more punch to it. So if i vote for cuteness, i go for the first one, if i go for hard core thinking, i will go for the second one.

Posted by: liz | September 23, 2008 10:28 PM
If No.2 was also wearing mascara, eye liner, hair coloring, contact lenses it would be even more effective. Companies test on animals because that's what our government requires (FDA) Animal studies first, then human clinical trials. Incidentally, only animals with pure DNA are used for drug studies--so contrary to popular belief--stray dogs and cats are safe from lab testing. Rodents are usually used because of their fast metabolism and short life span, a reaction will show up in them very quickly. In "reputable" labs, the animals are kept very clean and well fed and watered and temp controlled in order to eliminate these variables from the experiment. I'm not "taking any side" merely stating true facts.

Posted by: Emma | September 26, 2008 04:33 PM
The first one is the best, by far. It's the cutest picture ever, and gets the point across right away. While the words say it in the second, the first picture does a lot of the talking. I think the lipstick on the pig is too subtle, and there should be more makeup in the pic to me more eye catching.
Posted by: Ciara | September 26, 2008 07:44 PM
mmm this is a hard one
but I'd have to say number 1
:]
Posted by: Kenady | September 27, 2008 09:07 AM
Second one
Posted by: Sofia Fallas Paniagua | September 27, 2008 04:06 PM
In regards to what prplkao wrote, I just HAVE to say something.
I know you weren't "taking sides" when you wrote your comment but I must say your statement that stray dogs/cats are safe from animal testing is FALSE! It is so common for strays to be victims of animal testing/labs that I am sure you've heard the name for it.'Pound Seizure.'
Just because the greedy FDA requires animals to be tested for cosmetics DOES NOT make the tests correct or reliable. We have a very corrupt FDA that is motivated by special interests groups that pay out millions and millions of dollars to get certain things'approved'.
With public pressure and public outcry AND making our dollars speak out against those stuborn companies who will not change their outdated ways by consumers simply buying from companies who don't do animal testing, the FDA COULD stop this severely outmoded way of testing for product safety.
Our safety is actually threatened because animal tests ARE unreliable and useless. Whether the tests are for medical, cosmetics, or whatever - they are useless for human safety.
This next statement came from Melvin E. Anderson from The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences. He said: "The reason we use animal tests is because we have a comfort level with the process... not because it is the correct process, not because it gives us any real new information we need to make decisions. Animal tests are no longer the gold standard. It is a marvelously new world."

I have an idea, instead of buying animal friendly make-up. why dont you just stop wearing it? Make-up shows a lack of self confidence.
Posted by: chris | October 1, 2008 02:57 PM
I prefer the first one. It shows kindness. I like that because pigs strike me as being kind. And whoever gave that pig a big fat kiss must also be very kind! It models the way animals should be treated for the people who don't already understand that.
Posted by: Aretha | October 1, 2008 04:59 PM
Poster number 1 is the cutest!
So so very cute! It shows pigs need hugs and kisses too.

Where are the real animal testing pictures? I have come to realize that people are more affected by real pictures of what is really going on. The cute posters are effective too, but you must mix in some real pictures of the problem as well. And i love both of these!
Posted by: Nikole | October 3, 2008 02:37 PM
they both are sooooo cute but the second one gets my vote!

i dont thnk it is right to do anything to animals at all. Right now I am doing a research paper in my school about animal testing. It is not right ,neither is it to eat them but we need meat to live its part of the good meal you should be getting
Posted by: stephanie | April 25, 2009 10:08 PM
I TOTALLY LOVE THE FIRST ONE!
Posted by: jess | April 27, 2009 07:20 PM
Both are good - it depends what message you want to convey. #1 says don't eat me. #2 says don't test on animals. Both are effective for the statement being said. Both should be used at the cause you wish to address. Since both are crucial issues - use the one that applies.
Posted by: Cheryl | April 29, 2009 11:52 AM
Isnt' eating an animal also a sign of Love? After all if you didn't love it you wouldn't want to eat it ! That points to a deeper truth about humans which is that we are fundamentally "cannibalistic" on some biological level : we want to eat or incorporate (make part of our bodies) that whcih we love. We have learned over the millenia not to always follow that to its logical end, and maybe vegetarianism is part of some evolutionary process which has yet to fully unfold. In the mean time how we each choose to express "Love" towards our fellow creatures is really a personal choice ! That said, I am totally agaisnt cruelty in any form...

I am a pig LOVA and i agree pigs are as smart as three year olds but they're treated as dinner and meat. uhh... and i just hate that whenever i bring up that i love pigs cause people are always like; "yummy i like pork!" and stuff
